Must have for the FM!. The Korg Volca FM is an intimidating little synth. This guide breaks down everything in easy to understand lessons. Awesome book!

Excellent. Just buy this and don't look back!

Like an Enhanced User Manual for Volca FM. There are some "user guides" in the iBooks store that are basically reproductions of free online material masquerading as a paid how-to book. This Volca FM guide, however, goes far beyond anything offered by Korg by breaking down not only the features and "how to" aspects of the Volca FM, but how to integrate the device into a recording setup, use with 3rd party software (including Sysex editors and sending DX7 patches to the device), and even a crash course on FM synthesis. Even better, every control and LCD is laid out visually in the manual, so you can learn how to use the Volca FM even if it's not right in front of you. I consider this money well spent to have a portable version of the manual Korg should have included with this awesome little FM Synth. Will also be checking out his manual for the Volca Beats.

Concise as ever. This series is excellent, if you buy a Korg Volca, you can't go wrong buying the book with it. The FM is a complex piece of equipment, this book lays it all out for you and give a really good grounding to start Sample next please!

Korg Volca FM Expert Guide. Hello , my name is Paul , I play guitar and am a bit of a rocker, this year I am getting a Korg Volca FM for Christmas , I know barely anything about synthesisers except they make awesome sounds and came to define the sound of a generation I grew up with. So this review comes to you from someone with only what they have seen in a YouTube video (Dean Friedman , New York School of Synthesizers . Watch it it’s very informative and he’s very funny. And yes it is that Dean Friedman who had a hit with a song called “Lucky Stars” . So I started watching YouTube videos of these Korg Volca series, I had gleaned enough info from Deans video to understand the very basics. It was then I came across The Volca FM ! Wow , I had always liked fat analogue sounds from the 70s but my heart is in the 80s, all those theme tunes from action films, computer games , pads and instruments on songs , television shows , I found some demos amongst all the stuff on YouTube and I knew I had to have one of these units. I needed more information though , so I joined a korg volca Facebook group. It was there I found mention of Korg Volca expert guides, and there was even one for the FM . I hastily figured out how to find it and was able to download a sample . I eagerly loaded the sample up and set about reading it, WOW, loads of information clearly laid out , I scanned the pages taking information in. I thought to myself , this is gold , I’ve got to buy this. I did a bit more research and browsing at volca stuff on the net, then later , I purchased the book and settled down for a good read. Excellent ..... I was in my element as I looked at the contents page. There is a good selection of quick start guides which painlessly introduce you to the machine and guide you through the basics. Everything some noob like me needs to know, even stuff about loading in DX7 patches from the net and how to do it using all types of computer . The quick start guides really help to understand how you will extract sounds from the beast. It then goes into more depth on the different aspects of using the Volca Fm all the while demonstrating concepts with easy to understand diagrams sometimes accompanied by sound clips and sidebars explaining how you can try the idea out yourself . This was all very engrossing , the limits of the machine seem infinite and Tony goes into explaining how to use the sequencer to save patterns , chain them together etc . Besides all the invaluable information on using the machine itself , Tony then launches into a guide to FM synthesis , telling you how operators work , and about how they are similar and different from a analogue synth’s , showing you pictures of the waveforms and how they are affected by amplitude and frequency . There is so much to get your teeth into and it is all presented in a clear and simple manner . I was unable to put it down , fortunately there is enough detail if you really want to delve into the ins and outs of FM and programming this monster , you can go down to molecular type levels of knowledge of the machine and it’s parameters , so you will return to this book time and time again. I am sure every time you pick it up you will further your knowledge of this amazing machine , it will not just be a read it once and forget it book , it is like an alchemist’s guide to understanding the Volca Fm, and FM synthesis in general . Enough information is presented to give novices like me a good start , but then I am sure as you progress , what appears to be arcane knowledge to the uninitiated will make more and more sense , as you delve deeper into the realms of Fm synthesis and the Volca FM . You do not even have to be interested in electronic or dance music to gain knowledge or fun from the volca , like I said I have a rock background and a passion for the 80s, so with the korg volca and the knowledge from this book , anyone can unlock the immense store of magical sounds from within to express themselves creatively through this marvellous machine. You only have to look at the wide diversity of famous synth sounds to see what is possible if you apply yourself , that Hollywood piano sound you might find on Whitney Houston or eagles records, the flutes on peter Gabriel’s sledgehammer, the harmonica solo on Tina turners , what’s love got to do with it, the bass line and riffs of danger zone from top gun, Sounds from Duran Duran, Visage , Steve winwood , Phil Collins, Europe, Bon Jovi . Imagine trying to emulate the sound of theme tunes like knight rider or air wolf . I am sure with more knowledge and the availability of DX 7 patches this is a reachable goal for the musically inclined . And the first steps are to understand your machine. I fell with this book you are able to take not only the first steps on the ladder but given time and practice with the machine, ascend in your knowledge to realise the sounds you hear in your mind . I am looking forward to sitting down with the book later on , and it’s still 2 months before I will get my Korg Volca FM. That is how compelling the learning from this book will grab you. So if Like me you intend to purchase or receive a Volca of any kind, check the iBooks store and purchase one of these books ..........LIKE NOW ........ it’s a real no brainier decision . Thank you if you have stuck to the end of this review , I have rambled on as I’m so stoked to be getting one of these machines and having this amazing tombe of knowledge to refer to. Best wishes ........Paul

A Must Have For The Volca FM. This Expert Guide is awesome! If you’ve got the Volca FM and don’t have a this guide, you’re probably missing out on a lot of functionality (and fun) with your synth. This guide starts with the super basics of the Volca FM, but quickly gets deeper into this cool little synth. When Korg created the Volca FM, it seems like they “levelled up” on the Bass, Keys and Beats. The FM is a little more complex, and a lot more powerful. This goes both for the sequencing aspects of the FM, and the sound generation. This guide maps how you can really make the most of the machine. This guide helped me get started, but has also helped me later on (when I try to do more complex stuff). I’m actually planning to revisit it soon, to learn about MIDI integration with an external sequencer. I find having this guide is a bit better than some free video from youtube - I trust this guide more! That’s because it’s seems completely comprehensive, and is also pretty professionally written.

Ditto. I agree , this book is a must have, easy to read and well explained. Wonderful

A Must Have for Every Owner. This guide is very concise, yet very easy to understand, and helps you get the most out of your Volca FM. in fact I think KORG should be paying this guy to make the Instruction Manuals for all of their Products. After reading through this I want to buy more of Tony Horgans Guides & the Machines that Match. Definitely recommend
