Cause to Kill (An Avery Black Mystery—Book 1) by Blake Pierce Book Summary

“A dynamic story line that grips from the first chapter and doesn't let go.”
--Midwest Book Review, Diane Donovan (regarding Once Gone)

From #1 bestselling mystery author Blake Pierce comes a new masterpiece of psychological suspense.

Homicide Detective Avery Black has been through hell. Once a top criminal defense attorney, she fell from grace when she managed to get a brilliant Harvard professor off—only to watch him kill again. She lost her husband and her daughter, and her life fell apart around her.

Trying to redeem herself, Avery has turned to the other side of the law. Working her way up the ranks, she has reached Homicide Detective, to the scorn of her fellow officers, who still remember what she did, and who will always hate her.

Yet even they cannot deny Avery’s brilliant mind, and when a disturbing serial killer strikes fear into the heart of Boston, killing girls from elite colleges, it is Avery that they turn to. It is Avery’s chance to prove herself, to finally find the redemption she craves. And yet, as she is soon to find out, Avery has come up against a killer as brilliant and daring as she.

In this game of psychological cat and mouse, women are dying with mysterious clues, and the stakes could not be higher. A frantic race against time leads Avery through a series of shocking and unexpected twists—culminating in climax that even Avery could not imagine.

A dark psychological thriller with heart-pounding suspense, CAUSE TO KILL marks the debut of a riveting new series—and a beloved new character—that will leave you turning pages late into the night.

Book #2 in the Avery Black series is also available!

“A masterpiece of thriller and mystery. Pierce did a magnificent job developing characters with a psychological side, so well described that we feel inside their minds, follow their fears and cheer for their success. The plot is very intelligent and will keep you entertained throughout the book. Full of twists, this book will keep you awake until the turn of the last page.”

Cause to kill. Ok too wordy

Good First One. Enjoyed this first outing and look forward to the next. Believable characters and interesting story line.

A little disappointed. I became hooked on the Riley Paige series. This 1st book was free and thought I might enjoy it too. It didn’t catch me like the Riley series. I became distracted from the story because of all the type errors. The story ling was good but it didn’t grip me. I have a had time putting other books down. I want to keep reading. This book didn’t do that for me. I am going to buy the 2nd book in the series and hope it will be better, if it isn’t then I won’t waste my money.

Cause to Kill. I enjoyed the book and liked that the main character.

The spelling. You had a lot of spelling errors and it seem to bother me multiple times and made a lot of occurs. Can you please fix it but the book was good without the errors. I would’ve given you five stars if you have fix the errors. That is my honest answer.

Was this silence of the lambs?. Overall it was okay, just a complete ripoff of the silence of the lambs. I won't give away any of the spoilers, but really was not original.

Disherm. Okay story but too many typos and grammatical mistakes! Many of the relationships- i.e. Finley and Connelly -are not really developed well at all. And her gut feelings are not defined or believeable.

Decent story. Not a bad puff thriller, but definitely lots of typos and the errors in Boston details seem like the author took half a glance at a map and then said, “close enough.”

I'm torn.... The book itself was good. The story line, the characters and their backgrounds, everything was good to read. But the errors? The spelling, the sentence structures? Sometimes it was hard to follow. I won't be reading the rest of the series, based on the reviews of the following books. Also, I felt this book sometimes took a while to get into, I kind of dreaded reading it. Up until maybe the thirtieth chapter I was rethinking why I chose this book... Overall, it was okay, but it takes a while to get into. I would recommend reading the reviews before you decide to start, so you can prepare yourself.

Too bad. Fast read, but characters and plot seemed contrived. Book was riddled with editing errors that should have been caught prior to publishing. The details related to the Boston area surroundings were poignantly real. Those parts were spot on. I was just expecting more than a mix between a Harlequin romance and Silence of the Lambs. Those aspects might be very satisfying for some readers though. I hope this author finds a following. Every author deserves one.

Blake Pierce😋. Love all her books so far. Very talented storyteller

Cause to Kill. Wow a page turner

A good book that kept my interest. I thought this book well written with good character development. I will be looking for more books by this author.

Typical of author. I enjoy the author’s stories and characters, however the amount of errors, typos and grammar in all of her books keep me from buying more in any of the series. It’s a shame, really, but I can’t see spending money of shoddy work. With as many books and she has and as much as she charges, she’d be a lot more successful if she hired an editor.

Loved it. I really loved this book, despite its MANY spelling and grammar errors. Chapter “Tenty” was a favorite. Lol

Plot and characters. Great plot, very interesting and well developed. Characters well developed as well, even though you would like to kick a couple of their butts.

Worth the read. It’s a good story. I couldn’t wait to find out if the murderer would be caught. My only critique is Avery. She’s not likable for a reason. She does dumb things and knows it but still does them then wants to wonder why her life is miserable. It’s self inflicted. I hope her character is written better in the series.

Cause to kill. I feel as if I’m repeating myself I loved this book Every page pulls me in. I love the writing of Blake Pierce. His characters are very interesting and keeps one wanting more Thank you so much Blake and Aple for allowing me the chance to read. Love it, now to find somethinelse.

Cause to kill. Absolutely one of the best books I’ve ever read. Enjoyed reading this book. The author has a gift for words. Not a spooky mystery that gives you a bad night to sleep. 📼💤ole grandma

Cause to Kill. This is a great book ! I have a wonderful list of books and this is one of my best.I will continue to read these books .

Nice read!. Nice character development and an interesting story line. A little predictable and formulaic, but it was still definitely an enjoyable book to read.

Awesome book. I was hooked from the first chapter I couldn’t put this down. I just had to know what was going to happen next. I read it in 2 days and just got the second book.

Good read.. I enjoyed the book. It was interesting.

Who is the proof reader. I caught errors of spelling, 3tense or syntax on nearly every page.. Who is their proof reader .I caught errors of spelling, tense or syntax on every page.

Perfect. Cause to Kill was amazing. It has everything you could want in a mystery! I also loved how the killer did his work. The way the author wrote and described the killer’s work was incredible! I very much like how he involved the police officer’s family life and work life and put them together to create a wonderful story.

Was ok. Another book with a cop doesn’t obey rules yet get away with it. Nothing was unique, it was just another book.

A great twenty four hours!. I was so enthused by this book that I read it over two days, accomplishing little else on my weekend. I contacted a friend, and twisted her arm to read this book. Really, this is an excellent book!

Enjoyable read. Thoroughly enjoyed the story!

Gail. Great story! I couldn’t put my iPad down. I read it in less than 48 hours. It was a believable story.

Cause to Kill. A good read, well developed. I recommend!

Great book. Very good book. Keeps your entertained

Read it. Nonstop excitement! Make time to keep reading!

Cause to kill. Easy to follow tough to put down

Cause to Kill. This book is a thrilling page-turner. I highly recommend it to readers. I rated it four stars instead of five because of (1) several typos, and (2) unnecessary, frequent use of passive voice.

Cause to Kill. Loved It !. I liked that I was pulled into the story at the start ! I didn’t want to stop reading it. The way t is written made me feel like Avery . Very Well Written ! I will be reading more of these book by Blake Pierce !

Cause to kill. Always like a good book. Had me guessing till the end. But I did figure it out except for the relative.

Not so realistic. Besides the lack of book editing and all the errors that were distracting, Avery Black is a fantasy cop. Too many risks, too many second chances given by her superiors.

Couldn’t put it down!. Was an amazing read had me on the edge of my seat the entire book! Definitely want to read the second book!!!

Thrillers Beware. A real look in to the messed up life of Avery Black, although she is growing on me I sure hope she becomes a good mom! Oh and the people around her, well I hope they soften a little too. Creepy mystery that left me hanging till the end. Just downloaded the 2nd one.

Good book. Good book, a few grammar/spelling errors. I may buy book two it sounds pretty good too.

Cause to Kill. Really held my attention!

Cause to kill. Very good plot. Easy reading. Enjoyable

Cause to Kill. Gripping storyline

Wonderful book a must read!. Wow finally a book where heroine is not perfect, but does what needs to be done no matter who makes hard on her.👍

Gets your attention. Not a big reader, but this book had my attention.

Intense suspense. This was a suspenseful murder mystery. It was an enjoyable and worthwhile book to read. What is does need, however, is some serious proofreading. Can’t wait to get started on book 2.

Not bad. I liked the plot..there were an awful lot of typos and misspellings though. I don't know who their editor was but they should be replaced haha

Silence of the lambs. This book and Silence Of The Lambs are pretty much the same story.

Cause to Kill. A very good read. Avery Black is the only female detective in an all male department. She struggles for acceptance and to overcome past demons. Perusing a serial killer, she find herself having to visit a killer from her past to help put the present back together.

Thrilling couldn't stop reading. Wow - this is a brilliant story, couldn't stop reading, a masterpiece :-)

Great book. Well executed.

Great book, sack the proof reader!!!. Apart from a great deal of typos, a good read!!!! I have thoroughly enjoyed every series from Paige to Avery and all the way back to my first read, Mackenzie. I do find it slightly annoying paying for a book that is not flawless. I have read every series now and this is not the only book with mistakes in it, you need to sack the proof readers!!!

*******. Cause to kill §§§§§§§§§§ Another great story. Absolutely fantastic.

O.K. Read!. very interesting story.

Cause to kill. Loved this book, was totally gripped from the beginning, you feel like you know al the characters.

Sack the editor. Great read, but about 9 typos, exceedingly annoying for a big reader. Did read another pierce that only had the usual couple so might try book 2. Excellent crime storylines.

Good1. Avery black a strong personality like one of my friend, loved reading.

Very enjoyable. Great lead character, good storyline, well written

Cause to kill. Good read

Amazing book. Gripping. Hard to put down.

Enjoyed it. Great read, enjoyed every page

Grammatical errors overwhelm. This is a perfect start to a series, and entertaining in so many ways, however the grammatical errors constantly distracted me from the story line.

Entertaining read. Interesting book, enjoyed
