The Black Witch by Laurie Forest Book Summary

Critics are raving about Laurie Forests incredible debut, The Black Witch:

"Elloren learns to question authority and Gardnerian history, while developing real empathy for different races and species. Forest uses a richly imagined magical world to offer an uncompromising condemnation of prejudice and injustice." —Booklist, starred review

"Exquisite character work, an elaborate mythology, and a spectacularly rendered universe make this a noteworthy debut, which argues passionately against fascism and xenophobia." —Publishers Weekly, starred review

"This briskly paced, tightly plotted novel enacts the transformative power of education, creating engaging characters set in a rich alternative universe with a complicated history that can help us better understand our own." —Kirkus Reviews, starred review

A new Black Witch will rise…her powers vast beyond imagining.

Elloren Gardner is the granddaughter of the last prophesied Black Witch, Carnissa Gardner, who drove back the enemy forces and saved the Gardnerian people during the Realm War. But while she is the absolute spitting image of her famous grandmother, Elloren is utterly devoid of power in a society that prizes magical ability above all else.

When she is granted the opportunity to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming an apothecary, Elloren joins her brothers at the prestigious Verpax University to embrace a destiny of her own, free from the shadow of her grandmother's legacy. But she soon realizes that the university, which admits all manner of people—including the fire-wielding, winged Icarals, the sworn enemies of all Gardnerians—is a treacherous place for the granddaughter of the Black Witch.

As evil looms on the horizon and the pressure to live up to her heritage builds, everything Elloren thought she knew will be challenged and torn away. Her best hope of survival may be among the most unlikely band of misfits…if only she can find the courage to trust those she's been taught to hate and fear.

Loved it!. Couldn’t put it down. Now I’ve got to wait for the 2nd one.

Katie. One the best books I ever read! The characters are amazing and the plot is fantastic. The main character is a little whiny and prejudice but that changes very quickly turning her into one of the coolest characters ever!!!!

Snooze. Compelling story, however the prologue sets you up expecting the main character to realize she is in fact the powerful black witch, as the title of this story implies. I’m sure in the later books it will turn out she is in fact this person however she does not produce a single ounce of magic throughout this book and is highly misleading if that’s what you’re looking for. Story wise it’s fine, just missing the one thing I was looking for in this book.

Fantastic new fantasy series!. I rarely write book reviews but The Black Witch was so hard to put down and I’m seriously upset that I have to wait until October to read the next book! I’ve been a fan of the fantasy genre for over 20 years and this is the best new series I’ve read since the Dragonlance world by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. Seriously, if you like magic and dragons — read this book!!

Unlikely heroes, truly horrible villains. Interesting concepts and characters, deals with uncomfortable issues. Well written and worth a read. Looking forward to finding out what becomes of the unlikely heroes and truly awful villains in the sequels.

The Black Witch. I enjoyed the characters and story except for the politics that is obviously a way for the writer to vent her bias into the story. I get it it , it’s her story and she is the writer and should be able to write what she wants, for me it took away the enjoyment of just wanting to read a fantasy and not a political story! Compared to similar fantasy books ( Harry Potter, GOT, Lord of the Rings) the politics in the Black Witch seems too similar to US politics that doesn’t belong in a fantasy story.

Amazing Book!. A great book with a varied and interesting cast of characters. Read the whole thing in one sitting, I was so enthralled. I will say I do think its funny that the main character will go on and on about every woman she cones across, painstakingly detailing their beauty, and describes most men as same and boring, while being aghast at the thought of her being attracted to women. I was unsure myself for much of the novel of where she landed, haha!

Personal opinion. Overall this book was good. It had a lot of interesting characters that changed and developed over time and I also liked the love interest in this book. That might just be me, but 🤷🏽‍♀️. One thing however that I found irritating was the fact that it took SOOOO LONNNGGG for the girl to find out who she was. It was so annoying to me that it dragged on and on, but for the whole book itself I have to say it was really good. 👍👍👍👍👍

Outstanding! I couldn’t put it down!. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on an advance copy of The Black Witch and loved it. With genuinely endearing protagonists (and loathesome villans) the book avoids the cliches found in so many YA stories and creates a deeply connected web of complex and compelling relationships between a diverse cast of characters. There are moments of poignant emotional drama and unexpected alliances. There’s an abundance of action and intrigue that left me, after certain scenes, feeling like I had been shot out of a cannon. There aren’t many books that have genuinely made me stay up later than I meant to because I literally could not put them down. The Black Witch is one of those books. Be sure you’ve got a good alarm clock before you start the first chapter or you might be late for work the next morning.

Unbelievable. My number one complaint is the stupidity of the main character Elloren. Yeah I get that she’s from a small town, but’s she almost 18. She’s written like an immature 12 yr old. Life happens even in small towns. It makes absolutely no sense that this chick is 17 and she’s so stupid. She cries for half the book, she speaks and thinks like a child; it’s like reading about an infant going to college. I think that this book would have been great as a book for 12 yr olds. Anybody over the age of 14 is gonna have a hard time relating to the story.

Excellent for All Ages. I purchased this book after reading the good review it received from Kirkus. I had a bit of hesitation due to its obvious target audience (YA), but let me assure any adults out there considering purchasing this that it's money well spent. It's a very good story for all ages. Is it a bit teenage "romancy" for us old timers? Maybe just a tad, but I found myself enjoying even that part of the story (ah, young love...) As a whole it's very well done, and I'm looking forward to the next book.
