The Rooster Bar by John Grisham Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • John Grisham’s newest legal thriller takes you inside a law firm that’s on shaky ground.

Mark, Todd, and Zola came to law school to change the world, to make it a better place. But now, as third-year students, these close friends realize they have been duped. They all borrowed heavily to attend a third-tier, for-profit law school so mediocre that its graduates rarely pass the bar exam, let alone get good jobs. And when they learn that their school is one of a chain owned by a shady New York hedge-fund operator who also happens to own a bank specializing in student loans, the three know they have been caught up in The Great Law School Scam.

But maybe there's a way out. Maybe there’s a way to escape their crushing debt, expose the bank and the scam, and make a few bucks in the process. But to do so, they would first have to quit school. And leaving law school a few short months before graduation would be completely crazy, right?  Well, yes and no ...

Pull up a stool, grab a cold one, and get ready to spend some time at The Rooster Bar.

Don’t miss John Grisham’s new book, THE EXCHANGE: AFTER THE FIRM!

Awesome book. Very interesting storyline and characters.

Rooster Bar cackles. I just don’t like these characters. None of them really. An interesting point made was and the characters were crude tools to that end. But I’m a fantasy guy at heart so what do I know.

The Rooster Bar. Great Book but left me feeling it was an incomplete story ending.

The rooster bar. A quick and fun read

Rooster was overcooked. Dull and felt like writing to fill pages rather than tell a good story. Not gripping or engaging in a normal Grisham fashion.

Boring. Never thought I would rate a Grisham novel boring, but OMG, this was a real struggle to read. Characters were shallow, predictable and stereotypical. Storyline was also very predictable. Nowhere near his best work.

The Rooster Bar. As usual, with Grisham’s books, it’s a good read about a very interesting side of the “For Profit” Law schools.

The Rooster Bar Excursion. A fun, entertaining book. I didn’t want to put it down. Should be a great movie!

Where did Grisham go?. Can’t believe this is the same author who wrote the books I’ve enjoyed so much over the years. The back and forth conversations were forced and did not flow. Get back to the basics and give us something worth reading please. DISAPPOINTED!

The Rooster Bar. Excellent book from cover to cover.

The Rooster Bar. Not even close to his usual work. Very boring and predictable. Sad to know he would be happy putting out this subpar book.😒

Captivating!. John Grisham at his best! Story was riveting.

The Rooster Bar. We will never know how Mr. Grisham spins his tales. He most definitely is among the great playwrights and authors of a all time. Thank you, Mr. Grisham, for providing me a place to escape for many decades.

Rooster Bar. Great story of some truth that is probably happening or has happened.

A very good and entertaining read.. A Rooster Bar is a very good and entertaining read. I enjoyed all of the characters especially the three main ones, Mark, Todd and Zola. As they say a lot of truth in fiction and excellent relevance to todays issues: Student Debt, Value of an education, Immigration, corruption and such. It is great reinforcement to the idea that once you start lying you can never stop.

Rooster Bar. Very far fetched Not a believable story Too many liberties with reality

quite depressing. this book takes an unilaterally cynical view of the education, judicial and immigration system in the US. DON’T GET ME WRONG: all of these systems are broken. Yes, student debt is a problem, and education is too expensive, but the idea that suicide or crime is the only solution is extreme to say the least. Grisham usually points out the faults in society and provides a creative solution. While entertaining to read at times, this one just leaves the reader sad. No bright star. Pick a different Grisham in my opinion.

Not John Grisham’s Finest Book. This book was very boring except for the last 100 pages where it became somewhat interesting. The story line was hard to follow and the plot evolved too slow to keep the readers interest. Overall the book was boring and pretty much unbelievable. Will be a while before I buy a Grisham book.

Disappointing. After being excited about jumping into a book that hits home for so many students I feel as if the writer got lazy with the end! It was building up wonderfully!! And when I looked down and saw I only had six pages left I knew the book would either set stage for a second book or wrap up quickly....and it just fell off...... awful

The Rooster Bar. I am a great follower of John Grisham’s work but I do not like this book at all. Could not make myself read it all the way to the end.

Good Read. Starts slow, but when it gets going, wow…

Another great book. Read this over a few days, certainly enjoyed and kept me page turning

Chicken bar. What the heck? Dumb students, sign loans to pay for law school and run away from them? There had to be a better idea. Ending makes you think they got away with it. Hiding in Africa is better than facing facts! Seriously, not the Grisham I used to read. And I’m done.

Entertaining, but.... I like John Grisham a lot, but had a little trouble with this one. I am an attorney and remember law school vividly. The premise and action of the book require frequent spans of suspension of disbelief. Implausible, improbable and impossible are all adjectives I would use to describe many of the situations in the book. But aside from that, it was entertaining.

Very depressing. I will say the classic line, “I never write reviews but had to this time.” I read books to try to escape from real life. Oh ... ok ... I don’t mind a bit of truth/education in fiction books, but not to the level this book went. Suicide, horrible corruption, lack of morals ... the list goes on for this book. Again if you want to be TOTALLY depressed, read this book. Sorry John, I have always liked your books and have read MANY of yours but I put this one down half way through. I didn’t see any reason to finish it.

Not great - unrealistic and absurd. Once I start a book I need to finish it. This one took a lot effort to finish. Up until the end, I was still wondering if the plot will change, because the ongoing one was absurd. My expectations for the author were more, as I have read most of his novels...what I downgrade! Seems like somebody else wrote it. Anyway, I don't recommend this book because I found the plot absurd, unrealistic and beyond comprehension.

Don’t Waste Your Time. There isn’t one character you care about in this book. They are one dimensional at best. Instead of reading this, consider taking a shower or going for a walk instead. Boring read.

A great read book that fills you with much emotions. I loved reading this book but often times hated banks and banker and loan sharks. The painted scenes would well done and kept me reading. Thank you mr Grisham

Could not finish. Book was the worst Grisham has written too date. Finally gave up about a third way thru the book.

Rooster Bar. Author is getting by on his name. He actually apologizes after the end of the book.

A unique novel. In a swift change of pace from the typical courtroom thriller, this novel is a ballad to the hundreds of thousands of souls who strive or have striven after higher education. What it lacks in adventure, it gives back in painful truth : Sometimes, higher education come with a high price. If you want a satisfying read, this book delivers.

The Rooster Bar is something to crow about. This is a fascinating story and a glorious fantasy. Totally screw up and wind up on top anyway. I loved every minute and learned a lot about scam law schools.

Disappointing. This latest John Grisham is very disappointing. Not at all suspenseful. Feels amateurish, almost like someone else wrote it and Grisham slapped his name on it. That is probably not the case but if this what Grisham’s writing has evolved into he better put down his pen. Ugh.

The Rooster was AWFUL. If I hadn’t bought it, I would have chucked it on page 2. Horrible plot and worse writing. Save your money and go out to dinner and order Coq au Vin!

The Roster Bar. It was slow to develop, but I was ultimately engaged and enjoyed the ending.

The rooster bar. I love your books john, but this one kinda sucked. Atleast the ending was ok.

The Rooster Bar. It moved each turn of the page! Sometimes it ran or even panted but this book, the Rooster Bar excited and intrigued me each time I picked it up! The characters were relatable and I wanted them to win and succeed!

The rooster bar. Simple - even by John Grisham standards. Not a compelling Grisham book.

The Rooster Bar. I had a hard time finishing this book. It was the worse John Grisham has written. It was boring and silly. I have read all of his books and just wonder what he was smoking when he wrote this one. I am a former Legal Secretary and this one was empty of a plot.

Rooster Bar. This book was far toooooo intense to qualify as “enjoyable reading”. Toooo many scenes, too many characters and too much ado for me to say I enjoyed it. John Grisham has written much more enjoyable material in the past. These “cookie cutter” books aren’t as enjoyable to as his much earlier writings.

Not a good book. I hated this book. Never finished it.

Boring. Okay book definitely not as riveting as others.

The Rooster Bar. Well written, but uninspiring. I expect better from Grisham.

A man that. Defends pedophiles are disgusting

Waste of Time. This was such a stupid book I can’t believe I stuck it out.

Uninspired, unbelievable, and disappointing. Highly disappointed; I feel like one of the clients that end up being scammed by this book’s main characters. It’s hard to find a place to begin, with so many aspects being sub-par. The plot was incredibly simplistic and vague. A lot of “action” takes place in this book, but none of it is described with any detail, or attached to a single clear theme. No time or effort seemed to have been put into making the various settings unique or interesting. Washington D.C., Barbados, Africa, are all very different, wonderful places, and I was unable to “see” any of them based on the author’s (lack of) description. The dialogue among the characters was canned, predictable, and corny. The conclusion was rushed and anti-climactic. In summary, I feel justified in saying that I regret spending a dime on this amateurish book. This book makes everything written by Dean Koontz seem fresh and exhilarating. I expected more from the great Grisham.

The Rooster Bar. This book has nothing to do with reality or fiction. It is about thug kids who impersonate thug lawyers who work amongst thugs. Finally all the thugs live happily ever after. Grisham did not write this, maybe his neighbor did, but Grisham needs to tell the truth who was it that wrote this crap.

The Rooster Bar. As a diehard John Grisham fan, I am thoroughly disappointed in this novel. I recently saw him during a television interview-and he seemed to gloat at the fact that his books are often automatically successful. I think he was alluding to the fact that he does not have to do book tours. Well Mr. Grisham-it’s time to go back to the drawing board because this book was certainly lacking. It lacks substance, the characters had no depth, and I’m not even quite sure if the sequence of events were actually accurate. Many of them certainly weren’t believable. I think I’ll take a break and postpone the reading of the next Grisham novel for right now.

Disappointing. Grisham used to be a great writer and I really enjoyed his earlier works. This particular book, frankly, stunk.

Suspense filled. You’d love it, trust me

Rooster Bar. Don’t waste your money. Sometimes even great writers draw a blank and this one was one long blank for me.

The Rooster Bar. I was bitterly disappointed with Mr Grisham’ book. The premise Was ridiculous and the misuse of law was inane. The characters were shallow. I’m sorry I bought it.

Real life fiction at its best!. I very much enjoyed novels by John Grisham. I start off casually reading then just can’t put them down until I finish. I love the way I can identify with the main characters and actually believe that I am then. Thank you for allowing me to indulge in my dreams. Doug rafters

Rooster Bar. My first Grisham book. Totally disappointed. Painfully slow to evolve. Interesting premise but could have been condensed into about 25%.
