Year One by Nora Roberts Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER (December 2017)

A stunning new novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts—Year One is an epic of hope and horror, chaos and magick, and a journey that will unite a desperate group of people to fight the battle of their lives…

It began on New Year’s Eve.

The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed—and more than half of the world’s population was decimated.

Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magick rose up in its place. Some of it is good, like the witchcraft worked by Lana Bingham, practicing in the loft apartment she shares with her lover, Max. Some of it is unimaginably evil, and it can lurk anywhere, around a corner, in fetid tunnels beneath the river—or in the ones you know and love the most.

As word spreads that neither the immune nor the gifted are safe from the authorities who patrol the ravaged streets, and with nothing left to count on but each other, Lana and Max make their way out of a wrecked New York City. At the same time, other travelers are heading west too, into a new frontier. Chuck, a tech genius trying to hack his way through a world gone offline. Arlys, a journalist who has lost her audience but uses pen and paper to record the truth. Fred, her young colleague, possessed of burgeoning abilities and an optimism that seems out of place in this bleak landscape. And Rachel and Jonah, a resourceful doctor and a paramedic who fend off despair with their determination to keep a young mother and three infants in their care alive.

In a world of survivors where every stranger encountered could be either a savage or a savior, none of them knows exactly where they are heading, or why. But a purpose awaits them that will shape their lives and the lives of all those who remain.

The end has come. The beginning comes next.

Great read. The writing is classic NR, but the tale is entirely new. Complicated storytelling will leave you anxious for the rest of the story.

Year One. Another wonderfully written book! The minute I began to read the book I was hooked, couldn’t put it down! I the second one is not to far behind! Thank you so much Nora for giving us your imagination.

Wonderful and thrilling!. I literally couldn’t stop reading this book. So much sorrow, beauty, pain, fear, strength and hope. I’m really sad that I’m already done. Perhaps I should pace myself next time... I can’t wait for the next book to come out!

Simply one of the best new series. I’m a huge sci-fi/fantasy reader, I was caught up on all my series and needed a new beginning. I had know idea what I had in store for myself starting this series. I’m blown away, just speechless when it comes to how amazing this first book is, treat yourself to this book.

Bad read. Disappointed. Ick. Too something. maybe just scary. Can’t finish it. Read “The Handmaidens Tale.“ Another example of “please don’t ever let this happen “.

Year one. Fun read couldn’t put it down.

Year One. Never read a Nora Roberts book before. Now I know why. If you enjoy your books at a 6th grade reading level then consider this a 5 star review.

Wow, unbelievable. I’m loving this new version of Nora Roberts. More substance and just different from her usual style. It’s a great shift. I’m proud of her for trying this genre, I’m sure it was a little scary.

An easy, engrossing read..... I read this book over holiday and finished it and bought the next before the end of my time off. One of the things I loved about the book is the joining of the fantasy and post-apocalyptic concepts that felt organic and original, yet familiar to fans of the genres. Also, the book builds suspense in a way that I did not expect, but was exciting and rewarding. I've never read any Nora's work but from her style I can see how she is such a prolific author in the romance genre. She can seamlessly tie together complex feelings, motives, and actions for the reader that makes a great read. One criticism I may have is some of the action can be a little short, but I don't think it is inadequate, nor do I think her style detracts from the readers experience. I felt saved from the thousands of droning words wasted on house history a la GRRM, while not shorted on developing and painting a picture for the characters. I plan on recommend this to my other friends who dig the fantasy/sci fi genre.

Absolutely amazing. I only ever read when I’m on vacation because I feel it’s the only time I can dive into a book without my internal alarm telling me I have better things to do. However, I started and finished this book in two days, using whatever free time I had, without guilt. It gave me hope there are books out there that still do that! Loved this adventure and have already bought the second to this series. Can’t wait for the third in November!

So close to a really great book, but....... There are places where the story grabs you and pulls you in. Then with no warning or reason apparent that grip falters, weakens and let’s go. This could have been a great book. A truly worthy sister to The Stand or The Passage yet when it reaches for that platform it simply falls short. Character dev is spotty and lethargic. Scene and feel as well. I loved the story, the premise. The execution however is halfhearted, lazy. A good read but no classic between these covers.

Eerily surreal. An amazing read. Be careful getting attached to characters because you have no idea what may happen next. Great page turner and can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

Entertaining. Great story and characters. Multiple viewpoints going on but well done.

Year One. Not my normal forte but once I started to read this book I could not put it down.

Year One. I've read every book she's written, and felt compelled to finally leave a review. Her writing has evolved. She's deviated slightly from her formulaic, and enjoyable, style into MORE. I LOVED this book. I'll be reading this again, for sure.

Waste of money and time. I could not even finish this book. To bad, Nora Roberts has written such wonderful fantasies, this is not one of them.

Nora Rising. From a young age, I have read many a Nora Roberts book. Despite the multitude that she has out there, the books never seize to capture my attention and plunge me so whole-heartedly into her fantastical web. However, this book, exceeds the mere expectation of a good read. Well-written as usual, it’s different from her other works because it doesn’t follow her usual pattern of happy endings...I believe it will prove to have one with the conclusion of the third book, but with many sacrifices of the characters we’ve grown to love. They feel just as real to me as my next door neighbor. Thank you Nora Roberts, for surpassing your well-known witchcraft and giving us “Year One.” Also, I’m pretty sure Nora Roberts is immortal...she never ages :D

Year One. Loved it! Highly recommend.

Pablum. First three chapters were hopeful, but then I could predict everything thereafter. The dialogue was middle-schoolish and lacked realism... seriously bored me to tears.

Year one. I found this to be an excellent story. The unusual storyline kept me interested and I am looking forward to the next book in the series. Thank you!!!

Best book I’ve read in years. What a pleasant surprise First read from this author and I am now HOOKED! Great character development and story telling. Just wish the next book was written already as I already miss Fallon and her mom and dads

Year one. Stopped when she made the policeman( a man) gay . Chapter one .. really????

A GREAT READ.. I have read every book that Nora Roberts has written, even all of her JD Robb. Loved this book. It is different than anything she has written before, but she is such a great writer. Waiting patiently for the next book. Keep them coming.

The worst book ever. This is hands down the worst book I ever read in my life. The first 15% was good and had promise then it fizzled out. I plan on reading the series anyway to see if there is any storyline improvement

Non regular Nora Roberts readers beware.... Wow wow wow. I was looking for a gripping fantasy series and knew NR was a best selling author and people seemed to love her. I didn’t know she was known for romance novels and had never read her before. This book pulls you in with very decent first chapters, interesting premise. But it’s extremely hard to get through after that. My biggest issue is the characters, or lack of. There are about a dozen that you follow, but it’s nearly impossible to distinguish between them without her specific saying whose talking. They all have the same voice and the same opinions. The “good” characters are really nice; the bad characters are really mean. Also there are a bunch of magic babies in this book? It reads like a cross between Twilight and teen fan fiction. I’m sorry I really wanted to get into this trilogy.

Year one. One of the best thank you

Lana, Max and Fallon. I have never read too many books from this author, but this one sounded so good. Ms Roberts took the time to built and develop a story, from the start to where Fallon is born. How a simple virus could spread and the aftermath. The characters meet and later connect again. I am not into sweet mushy books, this has some brief romance, but I felt it was about after a major event where survivors do to survive. There is people who is good and evil in this book, how evil tries to eliminate those who are different, even though they are not evil. But I enjoyed this book, great characters development and world building. Great book. Thank you. Going to start book 2 now.

Year one. What a wonderful story, never a dull minute. I'm already casting the movie in my mind!

Great read!. Not to the level of George RE Martin but still a great book!

Simply fantastic. Not her usual But Absolutely one of the best books I’ve read in years! I devoured it in ONE night! I can not wait to see what’s next!!!

Okay.. I am an avid Nora Roberts/JD Robb fan. Sorry I read this one. Her development of characters is sensationally rich as always. However, I did not find this book the least bit entertaining. It is a theme of good vs. evil. Won’t be reading the trilogy. The final chapters engaged me...that was about it. So disappointed!

So So. Stephen King’s “The Stand” is far superior and essentially the same story. His is more suspenseful and far better written.

Amazing story. I have read many different books by many different authors, from King, Cussler, and Patterson who are amazing in their own right. But none of those listed above have captivated me as much as this book has. This is my first time reading one of her stories and I can not wait for the next installment. One of the best books I’ve ever read.

Disappointing. I usually don’t bother to review but the dialogue is so sappy and contrived I could not finish the first few chapters. I was expecting a sci-fi novel but this is like cheap romance horror.

Year One. Loved this very different thriller from Nora Roberts. It is the first of a trilogy that I just finished. It was great. My sisters and I purchased and shared the 3 audio MP3’s and loved the whole story about a disease that is killing people all over the world. The survivors have either special powers, or are somehow immune. Governments are overthrown by evil groups who are determined to kill all survivors who have special powers, even though most of these individuals want only to help all survivors live in peace. Very good.

Year One. I studied the Book of Revelation , but the end times never appealed to me, but I enjoyed this book p. It wasn’t really about a end, but about the time of getting ready first time a new beginning and beginning anew. The prospect of a baby being born and and romance beginning was good of course if the end time and a new beginning of time seemed to not just to be coincidence bi symbolic.

Absolutely Loved This Book. I found it on the shelf at my local library and didn’t put it down. Now I can’t wait to read the second book. This is very entertaining and well written story. Give it a chance you won’t be disappointed.

Pretty Awesome fantasy for Nora!!. The second to last review is hilarious! Hahaha! Too ick?! Too scary?! Were you expecting another romance novel? Read the description first next time. But this is what is so great about the new direction Nora is exploring lately. Her fantasy/folklore/witchcraft creativity side is quite wonderful and belongs up there with all the other fantasy power players like Sarah Maas & George RR Martin!

Don’t read when you have the flu!!. Nora Roberts has done it again! Totally sucked into this world she build. The characters are believable and easy to invest in! I can hardly wait for the next book!

I love this book. I could scarcely put it down. And I can’t wait for the next one!

Skip this book for the second one, Of Blood and Bone.. My rating system: 5 stars are reserved for books that totally blow me away. I don’t give too many of these out, since it is almost like giving the book a 100%. It is nearly impossible to write a truly perfect book. 4 stars for books that I would recommend to just about anyone, or, at least, to someone who doesn’t dislike the genre. 3 stars for books that I would only recommend to someone with a strong interest in the particular genre. 2 stars for books that I would be hesitant to recommend to anyone at all, but the book was not a total disaster. 1 star for books that were so terrible or ridiculous for me that I wish I had not wasted time on reading it to begin with.

Good read. I wish max hadn’t died but other than that one of the better books I’ve read

Book 1. Feels like a twist on Walking Dead. Magic is the twist, but seems to follow the same idea. Curious what changes as the books go on.

Year One. Good reading.

Year One. Spell bounding and thought provoking. Didn't want to put it down. Can't wait for the next book to come out. Hope it is soon.

Good first book. The first book was great reading. Second book is Ok. I’m sorry I bought the third book.

Best book. This is the best book I’ve read in years! I can’t wait to finish the trilogy!

Year One. Do not waste your time on this offering. Very disappointed in Nora Roberts - not up to her usual excellence

Loved it. So different

Unique characters and story. Loved the plot and the main characters. Sometimes the lesser characters blended together and were not developed but overall an enjoyable book.

Year One. Great read! Couldn’t put it down. Now waiting for Book two OF BLOOD AND BONE❣️

Makes you think. Did you ever watch the TV movie of Steven Kings the “The Stand”? The opening of this story gave me flashes of that but only better. Love the story of the progression of “The Doom”. Love the character stories, love the book.

Loved it. Great read ❤️

Yuck. Couldn’t finish it.

Such a great read. I’m already anticipating the next book in this series.

Year One. Dear Nora I just finished your new book Year One. There was a lot to follow and my favourite was the ending. Thanks again for sharing your stories with us. I have pre ordered the next JD Robb one too. Marian in Ontario

Year one. Great read!

Very interesting!. A book with all the elements I enjoy. Mystical creatures, plot twists, love and overcoming obstacles. As usual a wonderfully written book by Nora Robert’s. I’m very much looking forward to book two.
