The Escape Artist Book Reviews
The Escape Artist by Brad Meltzer Book Summary
Nola Brown, the U.S. Army's artist-in-residence--a painter and trained soldier--sees something nobody was supposed to see and earns a dangerous enemy in this novel as powerful as "a launched torpedo slashing through 400 pages of deep water before reaching impact...one of the best thrill rides ever" (David Baldacci).
Who is Nola Brown?
Nola is a mystery
Nola is trouble.
And Nola is supposed to be dead.
Her body was found on a plane that mysteriously fell from the sky as it left a secret military base in the Alaskan wilderness. Her commanding officer verifies she's dead. The US government confirms it. But Jim "Zig" Zigarowski has just found out the truth: Nola is still alive. And on the run.
Zig works at Dover Air Force Base, helping put to rest the bodies of those who die on top-secret missions. Nola was a childhood friend of Zig's daughter and someone who once saved his daughter's life. So when Zig realizes Nola is still alive, he's determined to find her. Yet as Zig digs into Nola's past, he learns that trouble follows Nola everywhere she goes.
Together, Nola and Zig will either reveal a sleight of hand being played at the highest levels of power or die trying to uncover the US Army's most mysterious secret--a centuries-old conspiracy that traces back through history to the greatest escape artist of all: Harry Houdini.
"Meltzer is a master and this is his best. Not since The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo have you seen a character like this. Get ready to meet Nola. If you've never tried Meltzer, this is the one." -- Harlan Coben

HUH?. I’m with Jaykk5977. This book is purely awful, with implausible characters and undisciplined writing. Any comparisons with Stieg Larsson are a huge reach.
Struggler. I really struggled to keep an excitement to read. Took me forever to get thru.
Military Houdini’s Mystery. Is it magic or is it slight of hand? The mystery starts early and so does the child neglect and punishment, but it all sort of comes together in the end - kinda. Good story with surprises.

The sample hooks you & you stay hooked till the last page!. It’s getting harder & harder to find a really good story. I can usually tell w in the first couple of pages if I’m going to like it. The first couple of pages told me that I would love this book, & I did! Great characters, unique setting, twists & turns, & surprises you don’t see. This is a can’t put down, page turner.
Slow start, roaring finish. It took about 15% to start moving, but then the book got interesting. Following a mortician may not be your first instinct, but Meltzer delivers adventure for Zig, Nola, and the gang. Overall, I’d recommend.

Purely awful.. I have never read this author but you get sucked in with reviews saying it’s like Lisbeth Salander. Nothing like it and I only finished it because I was on a flight with no wi-fi. I wish I could get my money back.
DLP. A good read. I got a bit frustrated with every other chapter going back in time but all in all I enjoyed the book.
Good book. I enjoyed the book but found few things to gripe about. First, during scenes meant to be suspenseful, the protagonists carried on entire conversations instead of eliminating their enemy immediately, allowing them to get out of their dangerous predicament in order to carry on. Second, as a retired soldier, I know that members of the US Army refer to their assignment as a post or fort, not a base like the Marines, Navy or Air Force. And finally, the author emphasized that an Army officer was an officer as opposed to a soldier; an officer might be an officer, but he or she is also a soldier and shouldn’t have been classified as otherwise. Still, a good book that I would have given a higher rating to if not for these oversights by the author and his editor.
5 stars. Loved it! Brad Meltzer is brilliant!
The escape artist. Interesting but brad tends too drag things out. Gets boring with all the verbiage. Forget the filler and stick to the storyline.
An OK Read. Above average plot and likable flawed characters.
Gadgets. Dummy
Not the best. Plot gaps and boring characters. Disappointing.
Different type of Meltzer. Meltzer usually hooks me in a few paragraphs and I can’t put the book down. In this one, there was something about it that kept me feeling like I was distant from the characters and plot line. About 3/4 of the way through, I got more comfortable with “the voice” and at times, I was turning pages rapidly. But, although it’s a good story, tough subjects, interesting characters, I still felt “outside” the events. Wondering if it was the subject matter, the storytelling style, or something else.
Disappointing.. Mediocre, lazy plotting ... boring characters... implausible...
Meltzer’s best. Hands down.. I love this book. So good. One complaint. It takes years to write and I’m done in a couple days. Not fair! Seriously. Great new characters and complicated characters. So good.
The Escape Artist. Great story and characters. Excellent summer or travel read. Fast paced and suspenseful.
Laborious. Laborious
No one does character development better than Meltzer!. Brad Meltzer does character development better than anyone, and Nola Brown is his “pièce de resistance!” Once you meet her, you won't be able to get her out of your head. Be prepared to marathon this book, it will have you waking up in the middle of the night for "just one more chapter." Who is Nola Brown? She is a masterpiece in suspenseful story telling from my favorite author!
Thrilling and Complex. This was a most satisfying read with lots of action and emotional intertwining, and insight into parts of the everyday world that are seldom considered.

The Escape Artist is fantastic. I just bought it a week ago and just finished reading it. Totally loved it. Truly engaging. Interesting characters. Many unsuspecting turns and twists. LOVED IT. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this read!!! I’ve read several Meltzer books and I just love his stories.
The Escape Artist. Not his best by far. Too many unbelievable twists and turns. And for $15, not worth it.
The escape artist. My daughter will tell you I don’t read for fun very much. This book was so good it kept me on my feet but I am very dissatisfied with the ending. He had better be making a sequel for this. Overall awesome.
Listen to Kevin & Bean 106.7. This is why I’m getting the book- sounds awesome
Sad and depressing tale.. I am not a fan. While the character of Zig is a good one, the rest of the story was just depressing. Not one I would read again or recommend.
