Alaska, 1974. Ernt Allbright came home from the Vietnam War a changed and volatile man. When he loses yet another job, he makes the impulsive decision to move his wife and daughter north where they will live off the grid in America’s last true frontier.

Cora will do anything for the man she loves, even if means following him into the unknown. Thirteen-year-old Leni, caught in the riptide of her parents’ passionate, stormy relationship, has little choice but to go along, daring to hope this new land promises her family a better future.

In a wild, remote corner of Alaska, the Allbrights find a fiercely independent community of strong men and even stronger women. The long, sunlit days and the generosity of the locals make up for the newcomers’ lack of preparation and dwindling resources.

But as winter approaches and darkness descends, Ernt’s fragile mental state deteriorates. Soon the perils outside pale in comparison to threats from within. In their small cabin, covered in snow, blanketed in eighteen hours of night, Leni and her mother learn the terrible truth: they are on their own.

Riveting. Incredible storytelling. Heavy, emotional, inspiring. A classic everyone should read.

Good read. Exhausting and good

I couldn’t put it down.. I loved this book. It had my full attention from the very beginning to the very end.

Couldn’t put it down. Poetic and thoughtful woven together with beautiful landscapes and heartbreak, survival and intense love.

Best of Hannah yet!. Unbelievably moving, emotional, raw and descriptive. It makes you yearn for Alaska…

Every emotion there is!. This book is fabulous, the ups and downs, the vision she paints of the wilderness, you feel like you are there. Great character development. I was sad, mad, happy, you name it I felt it reading this book!

Wonderful!. Really enjoyed this read!

Difficult.. I bought this book after reading the Authors book, The Nightingale. I was really looking forward to her writing again. I read The nightingale in mere days. With The Great Alone I had to fight my way through. I wasn’t hooked from the start. I was well over half way finished with the book before it truly grabbed my attention. But I had spent the money- I was finishing the book. I am glad I did. I believe the second half of the book is a whole lot better than the first half. Looking forward to choosing another book by this Kristin Hannah.

Great book!!. Just read it! You won’t regret it.

The great alone. I couldn’t put this down. I felt I was in Alaska with her graphic writing. Excellent.

The Great Alone. Very good book! Reminded me of the Glass Castle written by Jeanette Walls. Where a young girl overcomes her hardships of life, dealings with broken adults who can’t overcome their own crazy. I highly recommend this story.

Hard to Put Down. I loved the story telling in this book. The characters came to life through incredible emotional connections. The description of the Alaskan wilderness was exquisite.

MUST READ!. AMAZING! Brought me through every emotion! I couldn’t put the book down! At moments I was smiling, laughing, crying, absolutely shocked, and thrilled! Maybe my favorite book!!!

Great Read!. Great read…highly recommend!

Loved this book!. A novel that is hard to put down. I read for hours!

Amazing. I truly could not put this book down. It is now my favorite book and belongs with the great classics. This book is one that will stay with me forever. I’ve never reread a book but I hope to reread this one in the future just to relive it again. I’ve never been so captivated by a book before. I read this on my iPhone but I will be buying a hard copy just to have. It’s THAT good.

The Great Alone. Terrific story. Author creates believable characters & sets them in believable situations & challenges. Good read.

Could not put it down. I read this book in a day. Such a great adventure story and also sad, but I just had to know how it would end, so I could not put it down. I highly recommend this book, and I’m onto another book by Kristen, Fire fly lane. I have loved and read, the nightingale, true colors and of course the great alone.

Love!. I loved this book so much! I loved the Alaskan setting the most! I hope this becomes a movie!

Loved it. Great characters, a powerful and vivid story.

Fantastic read. A moving and compelling story.

Beautiful story!. An amazing story about strength, courage and love! One of my favorite books of all times!

Being alone is is far more than a state of being. And in this story you see how the main characters relate to Alaska. A land of beauty and filled with contrast. For Ernt it stands for freedom yet it becomes his prison and he tries to t take his family prisoners too. For Cora , Alaska becomes her purpose as she learns skills and starts be accepted by fellow Alaskans. Then for Leni it becomes her home filled with challenges, beauty, love, and a way to escape all the real and imagined monsters that lurk around. The Great Alone is a story of family and how no matter how much you love someone we are basically all alone….

Amazing. Best book I’ve read in a while

Excellent!. Loved the story, characters and beautiful descriptions of Alaska. Highly recommended!

Sad to Finish The Great Alone. Captivating story for any reader, but for me, a special connection to the War in Viet Nam and the damage it wrought in the young men who fought and died and the ones who fought and survived.

Great book. Great book

AMAZING. This book is WONDERFUL!! I hated having to put it down. It brought me to tears so many times I lost count. Beautifully written story with relatable characters. I don’t normally reread books but I can definitely see myself reading and enjoying this one again in the future.

A - F Scale: A. Easy Read. Quirky. Thrilling. Captivating. Unexpected.

Great!. Really good! Loved the details and coming of age storyline

Alaska. The author could have written half as much and still repeat the story. I was disappointed throughout most of the book and knew the end before I got there. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

Love this story!. I absolutely loved this book! Kristin Hannah is one of my new favorites!

Another Great Book by Hannah. While not as good as the Nightingale in my opinion it’s still an incredible book. Takes some time to get into but WOW does she make you fall in love with the characters. Highly recommend

The Great Alone. Impossible to put down. I couldn’t stop thinking about it until I finished it.

This book will repeatedly take you apart & put you back together again .... Literally my life: “For as long as I can remember, books have been my safe place.” It’s hard to not like a book that has that to say, or a fictional young adult with that sort of wisdom. Love and fear. The most destructive forces on earth. Fear had turned her inside out, love had made her stupid.” That quote is definitely befitting of this story. There’s no way I could find the words to do this reading experience justice so I’ll just say it packs real feels … all of them. Those of family love, friendship, loyalty, romantic love, complete and utter heartbreak and repeated satisfaction. This is one of those reads where the characters can be so frustrating … but I found their end results extremely satisfying. Very well played and I love how complete this tale is, it did not leave me wanting more. Would love to see this made into a movie or mini-series. 5 stars. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Note: I listened to the audiobook; 5-star performance.

Great Alone. Loved it. Great setting, plot and characters. It provides insight into domestic abuse . Also hope for life after sorrow.

The Great Alone. I will never forget this book! Everyone should read it at least once. It’s heart tugging and makes you appreciate things differently.

The Great Alone. Have read! As most of Kristin Hannah’s book, it’s hard to put down! Loved it!

Excellent read. I loved every part of this book! The story was wonderful. The characters and descriptions of Alaska were so interesting. I couldn’t put it down. So many unexpected events! This is definitely one of my top 5 favorite books. I loved the ending. BRAVO! Well done!

Can’t get enough!. I hate spoilers, so I will get to the point. This book will hook you. From the moment I started reading, I couldn’t put it down. The main character descriptions and internal struggle they face.. just makes you feel like you are really there with them. Another great book by Kristin Hannah.

Love Never Dies. Absolutely did it again KH!!! The emotional roller coaster you put me on once again was so worth the ending!! I couldn’t put this book down. Another favorite for sure. My husband has always said he wants us to move to Alaska to live off the land!! After reading this book~I will stay in Texas!!

Beautifully written. These characters were so rich in my mind. I’m going to miss them!

One of the best books I’ve read. I loved this book. I had a very clear picture of every character. This book made me love and fear the wildness of Alaska.

Worth the read. Every woman should read this get herself a copy. Really good story here

Heavy but worth it. This was a difficult book to read because of the heavy subject matter but the story is captivating and it’s beautifully written. I would recommend it unless you’re looking for a light read (which it isn’t).

Good book!. I became so invested in the characters of this book. I was never looking for a major twist or climax, I felt this book was more-so focused on building, and ultimately falling in love with, the characters throughout. Really enjoyed this read.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5. I LOVED this book! I liked the storyline, setting, EVERYTHING. The reason they don’t get the other half of the star is I want MORE, and it was a little slow at the beginning.

Heart Wrenching!. This is a most read! The emotions this book gave me tore me apart! I have never felt so angry, sad, happy, and distraught all in one book. On top of that I now want to visit Alaska! Great characters, such an amazing story! I can’t recommend it enough. You will binge read this book.

The Great Alone. Loved loved loved.

Great book. I loved it and learning about Alaska. A great read.

Unlike any other book I have read... This book brought me through feelings of young love in school, awe of wilderness and most importantly the meaning of family and unconditional love. I would be first in line to see this book turned into a film and then read the book again and again for the imperfect perfection of it’s story of harsh realities.

The Great Alone. Wonderfully written , great characters , couldn’t put this book down ! Thanks for the great read 🌸🙂

Amazing story. This book caught me from the start, it’s a book you will end up staying up all night to finish reading. Love love love

Best book. Best book I’ve ever read. My second all time favourite after Gone with the Wind.

Top 3 KH book. A little slow to get going to the good stuff but well well well worth the wait. Very suspenseful, surprising and emotional. Great book

A rare gem!. I rarely write reviews but when a book moves you so fiercely, you want to share it so everyone has the chance to experience it for themselves. It’s what those that love reading search for; a journey told through mesmerizing, picturesque words, a life I will never live, and yet, I did for just a little while. I will revel in this peace, gratitude and awe I feel, after finishing this novel, for as long as possible. Thank you.

Sad but fully engaging!. One of the saddest stories I’ve ever read, but I couldn’t put it down!

Must Read. Tears are still running down my face after finishing this beautiful story of love, community and family. Very moving. Couldn’t put this story down over the two days I read it.

Emotionally Invoking. This beautifully written book takes you on a journey that captivates through a sense of adventure, generational stereotypes, family dynamics and the true meaning of friendship and community. Survival is an instinct that is within us all and the backdrop of Alaska brings forth a multitude of emotion as they navigate the harshness of their environment with unhealed emotional wounds that they were trying to run from. A bold story of love and survival! I Could not put it down the first time I read it as I went from anger, fear, love, understanding and shock. The second time invoked a deeper understanding of each character, their family history, dynamics and how survival has so many different levels and boundaries for us all! A must read.

Well done for the most part. Over all I enjoyed the story. I grew up in the mountains so I can relate to how it feels to have where you grew up be an actual part of who you are and how a piece of it goes with you forever and you leave a piece of yourself there forever as well. It was a good snapshot of the 70’s too. A turbulent time. A couple of super slow spots in the middle were absolutely killing me. But I’m glad I overcame it and saw how it all ended up for these characters. I recommend with a warning that some parts you will have to push through with some determination.

Must read!!. Incredible read!!!! A heart breaking story about a demented tumultuous family strengthened by their mother daughter bond and their survival in Alaska brought on by strangers who come together as neighbours. An incredible coming of age love story between children and the obstacles they endure. A powerful story full of tear jerking moments. Incredible!!!

The Great Alone. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. One of the best I have read recently.

The great alone. Excellent story. Ms Hannah did a wonderful job describing g the cycle of abuse.

Must read. This was probably my favourite KH book I’ve ever read! Love, excitement, adventure, heartbreak and suspense - everything you could ask for. Amazing. Nothing will ever compare.

The Great Alone. I got a little more than half-way through this novel before I gave up. I was bothered by the bad stereotypical description of the ‘north’ and the shallow character development.
