Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe Book Summary

Things Fall Apart is the first of three novels in Chinua Achebe's critically acclaimed African Trilogy. It is a classic narrative about Africa's cataclysmic encounter with Europe as it establishes a colonial presence on the continent. Told through the fictional experiences of Okonkwo, a wealthy and fearless Igbo warrior of Umuofia in the late 1800s, Things Fall Apart explores one man's futile resistance to the devaluing of his Igbo traditions by British political andreligious forces and his despair as his community capitulates to the powerful new order.

With more than 20 million copies sold and translated into fifty-seven languages, Things Fall Apart provides one of the most illuminating and permanent monuments to African experience. Achebe does not only capture life in a pre-colonial African village, he conveys the tragedy of the loss of that world while broadening our understanding of our contemporary realities.

Great read.. Great book, would read it again.

Due Season. A great read at such a pivotal time in history. I journeyed with the characters, learned, laughed and cried.

Amazing and meaningful story! Great for students to read!. Quite an astonishing book with much meaning and many deep thoughts. I read this for school and had to write many paragraphs about it that led me to digging much much deeper into the story and the powerful ideas behind it. I encourage anyone who reads it to really try to identify the story and the character development (especially Okonkwo) and if you are reading it for school or work, reading aloud really helps.

Class read. Had to read this for a college course. I only give it a 2 cus it took me 2 days to read at work, i thought the main character was just awful.

Good story bad ending. Good story with good plot but a bad ending

Amazing details. Lots of twists and turns, Rushed ending though, Last word is the n word,so poetic.

Refund!!!!!!. I would like to get my money back please. It’s been less than 10 mins

A Profound Story. What an amazing novel. All should read it and get an understanding of how forcing change on an otherwise peaceful community disrupts and eventually destroys a way of life that for century's flourished. All in the name of God.

Hard to get into the story.. Not good, very boring, but I persisted, and I finally finished the book.

Great great. Great reading. Full of suspense and offers a good narrative of how the whiteman had his way with the african

SUPER BRILLIANT. A moving story told simply but powerfully. Achebe at his most brilliant best.

Masterpiece. Well written, the understanding of the African culture will forever be misunderstood

Overrated. Meh!!

Things Fall Apart is Great. A fabulous read from a perspective rarely found in Western literature. The book ends leaving the reader wanting for more. This is a story that many oppressed people will be able to relate to.

A book worth reading. I can say without exaggeration that this book is a must read for those interested the early days of the colonization of Africa. A rich tapestry of words forming an unforgettable picture of how their culture rapidly changed. Well written , and an excellent narrative.

Very eye grabbing. Amazing book. It was very hard to put down the book. The ending was very unexpected. I definitely recommend, 10/10

Things fall apart. Great story told in detail

All Time African Classic!. Read this book in High School and it stuck with me. Witness the raw and unfiltered collision of two worlds with disastrous consequences. Africa lost more than land and its natural resources. Centuries old traditions, religions, balance with nature all lost in an instant. Often times the story of Africa is told by foreigners who think they understand it and for once we get to hear it from an African. Great read and highly recommended!

Things fall apart. Awesome loved the culture.

0 Stars — Not Complete. MISSING TEXT, DOES NOT MENTION BEING ABRIDGED I should have read the other reviews

It Takes a While to Get Your Bearings in this Book. As a white male having grown up in Riverdale, NY, I was as clueless as any Westerner could be when I began reading this book. I had to push myself through the first quarter of the book before I began to ‘get it’. It all made sense then. I began to recall a course I took in college, “History of Western Africa.” Having recently read about the history of Nigeria and Ethiopia, the cultural context made sense. I became ‘de-Westernized’ enough to appreciate this great fictional story about a great Ibo warrior named Okonkyo. This tragic tale filled me with sadness at what these clans lost, as well as relief at what they were stopped from doing to themselves. Their beliefs may be labeled as pagan, but I found it understandable how such religious beliefs could evolve. Their barbaric acts were no worse then the methodical tyranny and oppression of the colonizers. There are no real heroes in this book, only a clash of civilizations and the bloody mess left in its wake. I recommend this book for 18+ year olds. Robert Gavila

Timeless Storytelling. It feels somewhat odd reading and reviewing a book that was once required high school reading for my mother and father when they were kids in Nigeria. A book about Nigeria, an almost forgotten past, and how Colonial Rule snuck its way in. I asked my mom to re-read it at the same time so I could ask her perspective on things. I wish I had read this when my dad was alive. Achebe writes with a mastery of language that is mesmerizing and lyrical. A melodic dance of words and phrases that paint the most illustrative pictures and tell a story like a song. The pace quickening to the finale, that in its last verse that leaves you spent. I see now why Achebe and this book have been so celebrated for decades. I knew this was not a story with happy endings, but I am left all the more heart broken by the tragedy of Okonkwo and his village. And the final sentence is like a dagger stuck into one’s pride; even if it is a reaching pride for a distant homeland. Achebe has spun a story that mourns a loss for a traditional way but also highlights the faults. A reflective tale of warning, blind adherence to customs and how outside influences can lead to things falling apart. I look forward to completing the African Trilogy once and for all.
