The Trials of Apollo, Book Three: The Burning Maze by Rick Riordan Book Summary

The formerly glorious god Apollo, cast down to earth in punishment by Zeus, is now an awkward mortal teenager named Lester Papadopoulos. In order to regain his place on Mount Olympus, Lester must restore five Oracles that have gone dark. But he has to achieve this impossible task without having any godly powers and while being duty-bound to a confounding young daughter of Demeter named Meg. Thanks a lot, Dad. With the help of some demigod friends, Lester managed to survive his first two trials, one at Camp Half-Blood, and one in Indianapolis, where Meg received the Dark Prophecy. The words she uttered while seated on the Throne of Memory revealed that an evil triumvirate of Roman emperors plans to attack Camp Jupiter. While Leo flies ahead on Festus to warn the Roman camp, Lester and Meg must go through the Labyrinth to find the third emperor--and an Oracle who speaks in word puzzles--somewhere in the American Southwest. There is one glimmer of hope in the gloom-filled prophecy: The cloven guide alone the way does know. They will have a satyr companion, and Meg knows just who to call upon. . . .

Honorable. I still donā€™t think Jasonā€™s death was avenged when I could literally feel piperā€™s sadness plus she had to see his body did you put it into so much detail I was literally OK maybe not completely literally but I was screaming. Quick tips for the next book please write it fasterCanā€™t wait. Also could you do something with Jason and piper like you did nico and bionica where she get can see and talk to him for a bit Just want to see piper happy again.

Jason and Crest. (Spoilers) I cried in my bathroom when reading of Jasonā€™s death. I understand that authors have a reason to kill off characters in books, but that doesnā€™t make it any less painful. Crest was so small and new. I really hoped he wouldnā€™t be killed off so soon, but he was. I just hope that if/when Apollo returns to Olympus (whether or not that be in his godly form) that he somehow finds a way to bring back Jason or Crest. Maybe heā€™ll somehow convince Asclepius to give him the physicians cure or Apollo will go to the underworld and bring them back himself. Either way, great book!

Oh my gods. What is your problem Rick? I mean, do you want to give me a heart attack?! After I finished the book, I went downstairs, baked myself some snickerdoodles, went back up to my room, cuddled under the blanket, and started reading the same scene over and over while eating all my snickerdoodles which are one of my least favorite cookies so I donā€™t even know why I made them sobbing the whole time. I cried n so hard my body couldnā€™t produce anymore tears and I had to go and get myself some new tear ducts. This is what you have done to the innocent children of the world Iā€™m going insane. But this doesnā€™t mean i want to kill you. No. For the sake of me and everyone elseā€™s survival, you have to stay alive. Even if you deserve to die in the deepest and darkest of holes. I am non existent without your writing. WARNING!!!!!!! donā€™t read the Percy Jackson series. It leads you into this deep and dark hole of sadness and laughter and awe. You canā€™t just stop reading rickā€™s books. You have to keep going till you die or else you will die. Itā€™s a horrible curse. To those like me who have already fallen into this deep dark hole of madness, Godspeed, and remember, there are others around you to get you through these terrible times.

An amazing book! Stirs up the best in you. This book was a roller coaster in terms or comedy, combat and most importantly STORY. The story is more in depth than ever before and you will not believe what happens! Also, the main character Apollo evolves and becomes more sympathetic and such, it stirs up a feeling on happiness as for his time as a mortal he will remember.

Spoilers ahead. Ok to be fair I knew Jasonā€™s death was gonna happen because I am not patient but I was so upset about it that I straight up refused to read this book but the I finished all the other series I knew that I couldnā€™t live without reading this one especially since if you make any new book series after this one you would talk about Jasonā€˜s death so I finally read trials of Apollo I down right loved the other books except I was sorta sad about Calypso and Leo staying in Indianapolis but when I got to this book it was still a very good story line except it was a sad story line so not my favourite although I love the ash tree nymphs and how funny they were. So uncle rick if you are reading this please donā€™t mention Jasonā€™s death in any other book except for The tyrants tomb where his funeral is in.

Saddest Book Rick Has Written. I donā€™t want to spoil anything, but I cried so hard!!!!! I love it but itā€™s depressing. Read it and you will understand. šŸ˜¢šŸ˜¢šŸ˜¢

Why uncle Rick?!?!?!!!!. What the actual Hades uncle Rick!!!! I loved Jason He was a hero that is true Now heā€™s dead. Iā€™m currently on the floor listening to the musical soundtrack eating some dam delicious blue cookies and crying

Bad. I ate a chicken after this to get the horrible taste of this book out of my mouth

why rick, why.... spoilersšŸ˜ Ok so uh letā€™s review the good stuff before i start sobbing. So Iā€™ll admit I didnā€™t really care at the end of the second book that we would be united with Grover again, but once I started the third book I realized how much I missed that goat. Like seriously, heā€™s amazing and so under-appreciated in my opinion. Next off I really liked the emperor in this one. He was a lot more intimidating and had a much better story and motive. Next, Apollo was a lot more likeable in this book. In the other two, he basically just complains the whole time. He still hasnā€™t gotten rid of all his selfishness, but there were two scenes that i really admired. In the closet with Piper, when they had that meaningful conversation of Piper and Jasonā€™s relationship, Apollo was really actually trying to be a good friend. And then in Caligulaā€™s throne room...I have to say I was NOT expecting Apollo to sacrifice himself like that. Then when Jason broke free of the wind cages I was like, ā€œYes! Now they can all get out of the boat ALIVE and celebrate!ā€ But a part of me knew something bad was going to happen sooner or later...mostly because I saw a comment on a video about Jason but I also could just tell. Thirty seconds later, ā€œOh look itā€™s Jason and he...OH MY GODS THERES A FREAKING SPEAR PENETRATING FROM HIS BACK...AHH! HE STABBED HIM AGAIN NO STOP PLEASE NOOOOOOO!!!!!! Those were just my thoughts. I was reading in the car and didnā€™t want my family to think i was even crazier than they thought. But I did cry quietly, even though I already knew he going to die, I cried. Even though I didnā€™t really ship Jasper, (Sorry, Brason is one of my OTPS,) I felt sympathy for Piper like the whole book and ugh iā€™m so mad and sad and happy at the same time cause the book was still sooo gooood. Seriously, how much did we miss in the short six month time period after the war with Gaea? Anyways iā€™m hyped for the next book and super restless about it. Iā€™m not used to waiting for books to come out and i only started reading the Percy Jackson series like ten years after the first one was published. Even though I already knew the major spoiler of Jasonā€™s death, I still enjoyed the book a lot. So i guess if you read this review and saw the spoiler you can still read the book if you havenā€™t. bye

Not Okay. This book is amazing. I enjoyed every minute of it, but Iā€™m not happy with events. I donā€™t like cliffhangers. :(

ITS ALMOST HERE. I honestly LOVE his book series and i canā€™t canā€™t wait till next month. But if youā€™re looking for something to read until itā€™s here then I recommend ā€œThe Eighth Dayā€. The main character reminds me of Percy and this girl that he is with reminds me of AnnaBeth! IM SOO EXCITED FOR THIS BOOK!!!!

Great. This book was wonderfully detailed and written, Rick never runs out of ideas. I highly recommend this book

Now that Jason is deadā€¦. I never really liked Jason much unless it was a ship moment with Piper. But I still LIKED him. But now that heā€™s dead I ship Piper and Thalia. - Emerald the SeaWing Jolie Foster the Vanisher WarmWind of ShadowClan Rowan daughter of Aphrodite

Amazing book. Loved the book if you are looking at this book then you should go to the first book. If you love to read the trials of Apollo series are the best books for you!

Awesome. When is the next one?

Love it!!!. This book is amazing! My favourite part is when the book mentions Hamilton!!!

Killed me like it killed Jason. The writing was good, the jokes mediocre, it was a little slow, but cool to see Jason and Piper and Grover back in the story... Until Uncle Rick SLAYED JASON! There were some really heartbreaking parts in the burning maze, and it was all so sudden! Would recommend for people with more patience than me.

SuperšŸ„³. The book is amazing, really, but Jasonā€™s death was a real party popper. Otherwise book great.

Why such a loooong wait?. I pre ordered this book last summer, and it still isnā€™t out. Come on Rick hurry up please.

ā—ļøSPOILER ALERTā—ļø. Horrible use of character death. I love a good tragic death and I love Rick Riordanā€™s books, but Jasonā€™s unnecessary death was just garbage. He died a minor character. He survives an entire battle with Gaea, the entire freaking earth, in the last series and he comes back as an unimportant side character in this series to show up just once to die stupidly. He died for no reason at all. His death didnā€™t accomplish anything! I would be able to forgive Jasonā€™s death if he died to permanently defeat an evil empower or resolve a major conflict, but no. He gets stabbed for nothing and itā€™s all over. The death prophecy was completely unnecessary. The plot would have been just fine if the death prophecy was omitted and Jason just went back to boarding school when the fight was over. He basically died for shock value, and didnā€™t even do that right. It wasnā€™t a sad, dramatic sacrifice. He gets stabbed in the back and everyone dips. Thatā€™s it. Heā€™s gone. So basically, an important character died just for a quick plot gimmick. He survived tons crazy battles in previous books just to die in a minor duel to some dude named Booties. We never got to see him reunite with Leo or make peace with himself after breaking up with Piper or see Nico out and proud with Will. All of those good plot opportunities gone for a cheap character death.

I have never loved and hated a book so much. Wonderful writing great plot read the book and you will be sad.

I loved it but.... I just about cried. Once. Thatā€™s all Iā€™m willing to give out.

These will be my first words when I get this book.. No. Mine. Hands off. CANT WAIT!!!!!!

My review has a SPOILER alertā—ļøā—ļøā—ļøā—ļø. Great book until Jason Graceā€™s unfortunate death!! Cā€™mon Rick!!! Jason was awesome in the Heroes of Olympus series! And now he just..... dies?! I mean I get it... thatā€™s the life of an author. You gotta make people die. But JASON?! ... I gave this 4 stars because other than the unfortunate death, the books are great! I read all the Percy Jackson/Heroes of Olympus/Trials of Apollo books!!

Rick I understand. Spoilers.Spoilers.Spoilers ahead. Honestly Iā€™m so shocked that we lost Jason so soon. Our relationship just started with him and I thought we could at least depend on another series to send him through. Percyā€™s been alive for how long? Iā€™m not saying I would rather have had Percy die. That probably would have been too devastating and I think you would lose a lot of fans there. Percy is too crucial to the plot/your base too die at this point (at least I hope so). In these stories unfortunately heroā€™s tend to die young. I get that you did this because you have to be realistic about this, as sad as it is, too often heroā€™s die young. So I get it but it doesnā€™t make it hurt any less. Thanks for punching me in the feels. Is death forever for Jason? Can we ever expect to see him in the future? He did do a lot for the gods. Would he be offered immortality as Percy was? Honestly Iā€™ve read/had read to me while traveling all of these books from the beginning. You are a genius and Disney butchered your books šŸ™. The magic that is in your pages is beyond Disneyā€™s grasp and I just wish everyone could experience what we experienced when weā€™ve read these books. Thank you so much for doing this. Please donā€™t ever stop writing.

The Burning Maze. I love Rick Riordanā€™s books, and this was no different. What I donā€™t understand though, is that basically most of the five star reviews are just comments of how they canā€™t wait for the book to be released . . .

Canā€™t wAit for the next one!!. I love ricks books soo freaking much!!! And btw, for those of you just scrolling down the reviews cuz your bored, ima give you a few dumb jokes. 1. If you see an apple store getting robbed, does that make you an iWitness? 2.whats the difference between a piano, a tuna, and a pot of glue? You can tuna piano, but you canā€™t piano a tuna!! But what about the pot of glue? I knew youā€™d get stuck there! 3.whats Forrest gumpā€™s password? 1forrest1 Hahahahaha sorry guys Iā€™m such a dork!! So excited for the next book!!!

Jasonā€¦... Honestly I knew he was going to die from the start. Oh well, Itā€™s better to just rip the band-Aid off but it still doesnā€™t hurt any less :( Also, poor Piper! I know that people hate on her, and that sometimes she just has some moments, but itā€™s still so hard to grieve for someone that was as close to you as Jason was to her. Also, to all the people complaining about Jasonā€™s death: in Heroes of Olympus, everyone was complaining about how ā€œnobody diedā€ and ā€œRick is to attached to his characters, heā€™s never going to kill any of them off.ā€ Please people, itā€™s extremely hard to write on book, much less multiple series.

Why did you KILL JASON!?. Why did Jason have to diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee?! He had a fandom! We shipped him with a brick! Bring him back to liiiiiiiifffeeeee! PLEASE Rick, have mercy! Do you even care about the brickā€™s feelings? And WHY did he and Piper break up? You didnā€™t elaborate.Bring Jason back!

Haiku about Jason. Jason was perfect. Now that Rick has slaughtered him, I am really sad.

I love it!. I really like this book because it combines Roman mythology and Greek mythology. šŸ˜ø

NUUUU JASON. I CRIED FOR TWO DAYS. WHY JASON? WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYšŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

Bruh. Hows he gonna do that to us?

jsissi. sksiiss

Think I might be getting a little to old for these books. Waiting waiting waiting waiting I need a new book.

Really. Of all things you absolutely had to kill Jason. Why? Never do that AGAIN!! Otherwise the book was awesome.

It was good and bad. Spoilers It was so good but then Jason died. Look I know that heroes die and all but seriously why did it have to be so soon!! Also why did Piper break up with Jason to begin with? Then to make matters worse, Crest had to die!! Why do the good people die!!!! Though I am glad that Annabeth and Percy are still together and alive otherwise I would have started balling. I am having a lot of mixed emotions about this book.

Great, but heart-wrenching. I love rick Riordan, i love these books, i love the world of Percy Jackson. I love the humor and the emotion. Uncle rick has a way of causing the reader to connect to the characters in such a way that backfires when one of them dies. Although itā€™s sad, its great story-telling

So happy!. Iā€™ve been waiting for this book to come out for 2 years now! And now Iā€™ve read it... Wait approximately 2 more years for the next one to come out... yay. But it was an AMAZING book. Probably my favorite book in the series so far. And Iā€™m only 12. These book are fun for all ages. When my parents got me the first book of this series, I was like, ā€œI donā€™t think Iā€™m gonna like it, ā€œbut I started reading it, and I loved it! I want to thank Rick Riordan for writing these books. They are awesome. I hope the next one is extra long, so it will take a while to read. But Iā€™ll love it nonetheless. Thanks Rick Riordan!

speechless. For anyone missing the high stakes intensity of the original Percy Jackson seriesā€”this ones for you. After a relatively light hearted and separated first two books, Burning Maze sends Trials of Apollo into a very deep tone shift. Much darker and outright heart wrenching Riordan exchanges light hearted silly jokes for intense displays of emotion that not only left my stomach in knots but pulled me fully back into his world. I tore through this book in under a day and am frankly appalled at the prospect of waiting over a year for the next one. Extremely well done.

JASONā€™S DEAD????????. WHY, RICK, WHY? I CAN LITERALLY FEEL THE TEARS!!!!!!! HE LIVED A SHORT LIFE! WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY MUST YOU DO THIS?!!!!!!!

Spoiler. The book was great but jason (character from past books) dies however the book was an amazing installment to the series

Best story in the Apollo series. Apollo never felt more like-able or human until this book. If you love this series of books or any of the Percy books this is a must read.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh. Ok I would rate but be cause rick is the best athouorIā€™m soooooooooooo exited rick pleas your the best at author ever please right more!!!

Great read. I think this is book is the best one so far in the series. Apollo stopped being winey and started taking action. Read it in one day.

Yaaaaaassssss!. It's finally here! OMG have been waiting since forever for this book to come out! Love the Percy Jackson universe!

Why. SPOILER ALERT why why why. I read the part about Jasonā€™s end during a math test. I started crying. My friends thought I was crazy. But seriously why. When will the next book come out I need to know now

Iā€™m still not over it. Thanks for breaking my heart. WHY

I have a question. Why did the date it was coming out change Iā€™m I love all his books and recommend reading them all but why did the date change of when it was gonna come out

Iā€™m happy Jason died. I loved all of the seven but Jason for some reason I never liked him Iā€™m glad he diedšŸ˜€

Why. WHY DID YOU KILL JASON IM ONLY HALF WAY THROUGH AND I AM BEYOND UPSET

Iā€™m sad. Since everyone else has already spoiled it I guess I can too. Why would you kill Jason, Rick? Why! He wasnā€™t my favourite but itā€™s still sad šŸ˜¢šŸ˜¢

It was good but sad.. I mean, everyone already spoiled the book so might as well go for it. One of my fav characters died, and now I can't even read any Rick Riordan books without being sad.

Why rick, why. I never was a big fan of Jasonā€™s character until the trials of Apollo. Right as my perspective changed and I fell in love with his character he died. It was heartbreaking, poor piper. WHY RICK, WHY?
