The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang Book Summary

From the author of The Bride Test comes a romance novel hailed as one of The Washington Post’s 50 Notable Works of Fiction in 2018 and one of Amazon’s Top 100 Books of 2018!

“This is such a fun read and it's also quite original and sexy and sensitive.”—Roxane Gay, New York Times bestselling author

“Hoang's writing bursts from the page.”—Buzzfeed

A heartwarming and refreshing debut novel that proves one thing: there's not enough data in the world to predict what will make your heart tick.

Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe. She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases—a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with, and way less experience in the dating department than the average thirty-year-old.

It doesn't help that Stella has Asperger's and French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. Her conclusion: she needs lots of practice—with a professional. Which is why she hires escort Michael Phan. The Vietnamese and Swedish stunner can't afford to turn down Stella's offer, and agrees to help her check off all the boxes on her lesson plan—from foreplay to more-than-missionary position...

Before long, Stella not only learns to appreciate his kisses, but crave all of the other things he's making her feel. Their no-nonsense partnership starts making a strange kind of sense. And the pattern that emerges will convince Stella that love is the best kind of logic...

Take the plunge!. I kept seeing this book pop up everywhere but I was hesitant because I’m very picky with the books I read but I LOVE this novel. It’s has just enough sex, romance, awkward, and sympathy all wrapped up into the perfect read

Amazing. Read this book in one day. Loved it. Will probably read it again!

Just wow. This book made me have my tears yet I made me believe love is real in some type of way. But I really enjoyed this book.

Easy and Stimulating. I hate trashy romance and this is anything but. Stella and Michael’s relationship set me free and I love their character and background. I loved being able to see the autistic side of Stella’s life and that there wasn’t any sugar coating. This book make me feel.

Unexpected and beautiful. Loved seeing a dating relationship from the point of view of a person with autism. It was hopeful and beautiful… and spicy! Loved it.

Fantastic!. Thoroughly loved this book!

My fav book of the year!. I was a bit wary starting this book because I didn't want Stella to be written as a one dimensional stereotype. But I did NOT need to worry....this book was soooo good! Very rarely do I love both hero AND heroine but Michael and Stella surpassed my expectations. The chemistry between the 2 is off the charts but also their day to day connection was very cute too. I rarely laugh out loud reading books but that one scene and Michael's quip with dvds and alphabetizing was hilarious. Michael had just enough Alpha in him but was so sweet with Stella. I also loved the piano duet scene.....so poignant and sweet on so many levels. Stella was a wonderful heroine......so honest and straightforward....no game playing. The only negative could be the misunderstanding at the end that seemed to drag on a bit. But that is a small negative when considering how much I enjoyed the book. It will definitely put a smile on your face!

So good!!!. Initially, my main reasons for reading this book were because I love romance novels and because I’m a math major who felt a connection to Stella. In reading it, I discovered this book had so much more to offer than just another romance book. There was drama and layers and heartache and and true love with all its rough edges. I loved it!

One of the best books I have read!!!. Absolutely loved this book. I loved how genuine the characters were. Loved their story.

Loved it!. Not your typical romance novel. Well worth reading

Breath of fresh air. Very unique spin on such a classic. Such a page turner from beginning to end! Loved it!

Do not recommend. Couldn’t put myself into it, the story is quite boring. You’ll only like this book if you’re under 16 years

Boring. The book was boring to me I know some people like it but I have read better books I’m supposed to understand the male lead’s reasoning but I don’t and so I end up judging his actions but I don’t know their live story was boring to me

Amazing. So good. I finished it in 2 days

This is such a beautiful story!. I loved this love story between Stella and Michael. This story was so sweet, which I wasn’t expecting given the description letting you know that Michael is a prostitute. I thought that the author demonstrated many of the insecurities that many women have when trying to navigate relationships, and when autism is added in the mix, it made my heart soar. I have to commend the way Stella decided to go headlong into a life experience that for many people can be fleeting. I think many women try to compensate for many perceived insufficiencies to find love. It’s been a long time since I read a book that moved me so much. I had to force myself to put this book down just so I could go to bed and sleep. I can’t say enough good things about this book, and will definitely will be reading Khai’s story!

Great book. If you liked the love hypothesis you’ll like this book

Devoured it. I love this book and characters. Devoured it. Michael will forever be a hero of mine, I love him! My only reason for 4 stars is that the ending felt rushed and I wanted more dialogue… and more romance there at the end. And then it felt weird that all of his dreams snapped into place in a matter of months, the epilogue should have more centered on the to of them. But I truly adored this story! ❤️

I’ve read this book a million times. It’s just so perfect.

Great. I don’t often leave reviews but I was so impressed with this take on the hire-a-boyfriend story. You are rooting for these two for the whole book. Great work bring all Stella’s personality traits out, it really rounded out her character.

Unrealistic conflict but a great read nonetheless. I liked the book until it got to the point of the conflict between the two main characters. It seemed like Michael was unrealistically hung up on his father and it didn’t are since. I loved Stella and Michaels relationship though and I won’t soon forget them.

2018 version Pretty woman great read. This is a 2018 version of Pretty woman, or a modern Cinderella story where both the leading roles were saved. I loved it and almost cried a few times. I feel for both Stella since I studied math. And Michael as an Asian. Just want to pint out some of the statistics detail is a bit off. I think Stella is More of a data scientist and build machine learning model in current setting.

Conflicted. While there are some aspects of the book that are enjoyable (mostly scenes that include interaction with Michael and his sisters/mother/grandmother) there isn’t really anything too exciting about it. There’s no real climax. No exciting plot twists. Sometimes the dialogue is a bit cringe. I mean, it wasn’t horrible. Just not memorable.

Love it. It was beautiful story It was so great!

Loved It!. Had no idea what I was getting into but I'm glad I took a chance on this book. I was caught off guard in how steamy the scenes would get. Definitely one of favorite books now and I loved how the author also weaved herself into her character with Asperger's. Sidenote: I now look at dragon tattoos differently.

One of my favorites!!!. This is by far one of the best books I have read! I read the whole thing in one sitting and couldn’t put it down. It was nothing like anything I had ever read before and LOVED how it brought in the perspective of someone who has aspergers.

Such a sweet romance. I loved this booked beginning to end. I read it in one and a half day. I just simply couldn’t stop myself from reading. Stella and Michael are just the sweetest thing and they are perfect together. They are made for each other. This book is filled with love, passion, gentleness and sweetness. Just a really really beautiful and sweet story.

Absolutely Amazing!!. This book is one of my new favorites! I love how the author included a character with a condition, and portrayed her as strong and determined. The relationship between the two characters is absolutely adorable and the way Michael cares for and treats Stella is so incredibly heartwarming. Everything about this novel is perfect. The writing, the character development, emotional appeal, story progression, alllllll of it!! Definitely recommend!

Such a lovely read. 🥰

The kiss quotient- review. I literally loved this book. The representation in this book is just amazing. I am so happy with the ending too. Literally amazing, totally recommend.

wow.. overall, the story was really funny and enjoyable. i think a little heavy on the explicit scenes, but if you’re into that it’s a good read. those who liked love hypothesis would probably find this really enjoyable. a really quick read with super fun characters that are easy to get attached to. i would recommend if you’re into the cheesy/comedy/smut heavy genre.

Really cute. Really cute and sweet to accept people as they are

NEVER FINISHED A BOOK SO QUICKLY!. OMG! I was looking for books similar to The Love Hypotheses and this one was even better! Loved every page, section and scene from this book. I could connect with the characters and root for them the whole time! I was kinda frustrated near the end with the One sided love trope but overall it was for the best! I’m definitely going to buy the whole series!

One of the Best Romance. I swear this book is amazing. All the way to the beginning to the end.

An easy beach read about love. This book has a twist on a love story. Easy to read with beautiful rich characters. I would love to see more from this author.

Fun read. Cute, light, fun read!

Loved this book!. Loved, loved, loved this book! One of my favorites of 2018. I loved & related to Stella’s awkwardness. Loved that Michael was attracted to her because of her differences. Loved the way he made sacrifices for his family. And I especially loved the way Stella & Michael both became better versions of themselves from their time together, while not depending on the other person to make them whole. Highly recommend the audio narrated by Carly Robins who did an marvelous job bringing all the characters to life.

Worth the Read!. This is the best romance novel I’ve read in a while. It’s so sweet and brought me to tears several times. It’s completely worth the read. The only dislike I had was the typical storyline where they break it off right before the ending and get back together. I’m kind of tired of books following this exact same plot pattern.

I’m Not Mad, But I’m Also Not in Love. A bit cliche, more than one trope I’m not a fan of, but the premise was somewhat new and there were definitely parts I loved. Overall it was better than I expected but I’m not sure I’d recommend it.

Not for me. I wish there was a way to return this and get my money back. If you’re into those bedroom scenes then go ahead, but that’s basically all this book was. It was sweet but too much of everything else.

WONDERFUL BOOK❤️. A great read for the summer, or anytime really😂. You really fall in love with the characters and their personalities.

Fun read!. The author has a knack for translating romantic spark and fantasy into the written word. I’m not typically a big fan of rom com books but this felt like an honest portrayal of one woman’s sexual awakening. Thoroughly enjoyed

Ok for the money. Okay book, but lost interest about halfway through.

Super cute. Great book, cute story! Ended a hair on the cheesy side but over all kept me hooked! I read the entire thing in a 24 hour time period!

So good!! Amazing. Would recommend. This book really was so good finished it in a day too Hahah

Cute book. I enjoyed reading the book but the reviews on it were lacking in the sense that it is smutty. In a beautiful heartwarming make your boyfriend read to get a hint kind of way. It was relatively short but in a good way

5 stars. I loved this book! Michael was so perfect and I loved him so much. I loved that he was a fashion designer and could make clothes. Such a unique talent for a male lead and to fit him and the story so well. I loved Stella as well and all her quirks. This was a great look into autism and really smashed some of the stereotypes I had when going into this book. I love that Stella wasn’t magically “cured” once she got with Michael. She still had social anxiety and said the wrong things (which I loved). I honestly wish there was MORE to the story. I wanted more about his parents relationship, more about Quan and Kia, more about his sisters. It was such a great book I didn’t want it to end. I can’t wait to read Kia’s story!

This book was everything. I loved these characters so much and their story was captivating. I couldn’t stop reading. Please read this book. This book made me want to be loved the way Michael loves Stella. The chemistry was on point. I’ve never seen chemistry in a book communicated so well

Amazing. Read this book in two days. Amazing love story, human connection and real life. Such a great story, I didn’t want it to end!

Dear Helen,. I thought this book (the kiss quotient) was just going to be a spicy book and open me up to a new world after reading some random recommendations on tiktok comments. It turns out the main character had the same disorder as me. I’ve never been diagnosed. But I’ve never been more sure. Not only did I get introduced to a new genre I also feel I learned more about myself through this character. It made me realize there are other people out there just like me. Thank you for writing this book. I plan of reading the other ones in the series as well. Kaylee

The Kiss Quotient. First time reading this author, and I chose it for it’s ratings. I was not disappointed. As I have grown older I tend to avoid books that have heavy sex scenes and the language used to describe them that have become offensive to me. However, the story became so compelling, the characters so endearing, that I couldn’t stop reading. I was amazed that this book turned out to be the authors first book. I will continue to look for future books by this author. WELL DONE !

Refreshing story!. Michael and Stella are cute, funny and their story is refreshing and different!

The Kiss Quotient. It was cute but pretty simple. It also has more sex scenes then I was expecting lol. Overall I thought it was okay

Near perfection. Helen Hoang’s debut novel is all kinds of perfect!

All-nighter worthy. A contemporary romance with a mixed ethnicity Asian hero and a non-neurotypical heroine, both a nice change from the cookie cutter types in Romance! Rather spicy, for sure, but doesn’t rely on that alone, it’s also a very sensitive story. Couldn’t put it down and read until the wee hours of the morning!

Sexy, Charming and Addictive!. I first saw the Bride Test book in a Relay store while I was at the airport. Written by a Vietnamese! Being Vietnamese, it seized my attention. Then I saw that her first book was The Kiss Quotient. So i downloaded it on my phone to read while on vacation. Couldn’t put the book down. Every little detail, I love! Especially when it was referring to Vietnamese culture. One down and I started her 2nd book, The Bride Test. As great as the first one. Now that I’m done with both books, I can’t wait for her 3rd book. I miss the characters already.

Nice but spicy. It’s a nice book. The characters are interesting, the obstacles are realistic and it had lots of funny moments. Both Michael and Stella are a fairly refreshing characters in the romcom world. It had a LOT of spicy bits- which is to be expected based on how they meet- but I did find it a little much.
