The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang Book Summary

From the author of The Bride Test comes a romance novel hailed as one of The Washington Post’s 50 Notable Works of Fiction in 2018 and one of Amazon’s Top 100 Books of 2018!

“This is such a fun read and it's also quite original and sexy and sensitive.”—Roxane Gay, New York Times bestselling author

“Hoang's writing bursts from the page.”—Buzzfeed

A heartwarming and refreshing debut novel that proves one thing: there's not enough data in the world to predict what will make your heart tick.

Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe. She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases—a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with, and way less experience in the dating department than the average thirty-year-old.

It doesn't help that Stella has Asperger's and French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. Her conclusion: she needs lots of practice—with a professional. Which is why she hires escort Michael Phan. The Vietnamese and Swedish stunner can't afford to turn down Stella's offer, and agrees to help her check off all the boxes on her lesson plan—from foreplay to more-than-missionary position...

Before long, Stella not only learns to appreciate his kisses, but crave all of the other things he's making her feel. Their no-nonsense partnership starts making a strange kind of sense. And the pattern that emerges will convince Stella that love is the best kind of logic...

The Kiss Quotient (Helen Hoang) Book Reviews

GreatI don’t often leave reviews but I was so impressed with this take on the hire-a-boyfriend story. You are rooting for these two for the whole book. Great work bring all Stella’s personality traits out, it really rounded out her character..Score: 5/5

I’m Not Mad, But I’m Also Not in LoveA bit cliche, more than one trope I’m not a fan of, but the premise was somewhat new and there were definitely parts I loved. Overall it was better than I expected but I’m not sure I’d recommend it..Score: 3/5

ConflictedWhile there are some aspects of the book that are enjoyable (mostly scenes that include interaction with Michael and his sisters/mother/grandmother) there isn’t really anything too exciting about it. There’s no real climax. No exciting plot twists. Sometimes the dialogue is a bit cringe. I mean, it wasn’t horrible. Just not memorable..Score: 2/5

2018 version Pretty woman great readThis is a 2018 version of Pretty woman, or a modern Cinderella story where both the leading roles were saved. I loved it and almost cried a few times. I feel for both Stella since I studied math. And Michael as an Asian. Just want to pint out some of the statistics detail is a bit off. Devoured itI love this book and characters. Devoured it. Michael will forever be a hero of mine, I love him! My only reason for 4 stars is that the ending felt rushed and I wanted more dialogue… and more romance there at the end. And then it felt weird that all of his dreams snapped into place in a matter of months, the epilogue should have more centered on the to of them. But I truly adored this story! ❤️.Score: 4/5

Worth the Read! This is the best romance novel I’ve read in a while. It’s so sweet and brought me to tears several times. It’s completely worth the read. The only dislike I had was the typical storyline where they break it off right before the ending and get back together. I’m kind of tired of books following this exact same plot pattern..Score: 4/5

5 starsI loved this book! Michael was so perfect and I loved him so much. I loved that he was a fashion designer and could make clothes. Such a unique talent for a male lead and to fit him and the story so well. I loved Stella as well and all her quirks. This was a great look into autism and really smashed some of the stereotypes I had when going into this book. I love that Stella wasn’t magically “cured” once she got with Michael. She still had social anxiety and said the wrong things (which I loved). I honestly wish there was MORE to the story. I wanted more about his parents relationship, more about Quan and Kia, more about his sisters. It was such a great book I didn’t want it to end. I can’t wait to read Kia’s story!.Score: 5/5

So good!!!Initially, my main reasons for reading this book were because I love romance novels and because I’m a math major who felt a connection to Stella. Unrealistic conflict but a great read nonethelessI liked the book until it got to the point of the conflict between the two main characters. Loved the way he made sacrifices for his family. And I especially loved the way Stella & Michael both became better versions of themselves from their time together, while not depending on the other person to make them whole. As I have grown older I tend to avoid books that have heavy sex scenes and the language used to describe them that have become offensive to me. My fav book of the year!I was a bit wary starting this book because I didn't want Stella to be written as a one dimensional stereotype. But I did NOT need to worry....this book was soooo good! Very rarely do I love both hero AND heroine but Michael and Stella surpassed my expectations. The chemistry between the 2 is off the charts but also their day to day connection was very cute too. I rarely laugh out loud reading books but that one scene and Michael's quip with dvds and alphabetizing was hilarious. Michael had just enough Alpha in him but was so sweet with Stella. I also loved the piano duet scene.....so poignant and sweet on so many levels. Stella was a wonderful heroine......so honest and straightforward....no game playing. The only negative could be the misunderstanding at the end that seemed to drag on a bit. But that is a small negative when considering how much I enjoyed the book. It will definitely put a smile on your face!.Score: 5/5

Amazing Debut!!This is an amazing debut novel!!!!! I read an excerpt and was completely hooked and needed to read more. I was curious how this story was going to play out, how a main character on the autism spectrum would be portrayed respectfully, and how the interactions between Stella and Michael were going to be. Prior to reading, I wasn't aware that the author is also on the spectrum so my concern that respect wouldn't be given was all for naught. From the beginning, I was sucked in and couldn't put this book down. I loved absolutely everything about Stella and Michael, both individually and together. This author has made me completely invested in everyone introduced in this story and I am anxiously awaiting the next in this series. *This is my voluntary review of an advanced reader copy*.Score: 5/5

You’re Going to Love it! It’s Economics 💛Perfect. This book was honest to goodness PERFECT. It was genuine, sincere, and had so much heart. I really cannot believe that this is Helen Hoang's debut novel. I was sucked into this book right from the start and couldn't get enough. I absolutely loved Stella and Michael, both individually and together. Their journey was so unique and refreshing. It made me re-examine myself and my own views through a different lens. Though their relationship starts off unconventionally, their chemistry is immediate and only grows as their feelings begin to blur from professional to more. I was so invested in these characters as well as their families. My heart ached for Stella and Michael when they struggled and it rejoiced in their quiet moments and their connection. I loved that they understood each other and truly saw the other for who they really were. Beyond the masks. Beyond the walls. Beyond the labels. The Kiss Quotient was the perfect blend of swoon and sexy, but it also had just the right amount of heartache. There are obstacles to overcome for both of them, but it made the destination so much more gratifying and fulfilling. The self discovery of both Stella and Michael was a beautiful thing to watch unfold. I also especially loved Michael's family and Stella's introduction to the Vietnamese culture. Some of those scenes had me laughing out loud, while others warmed my heart in their familiarity. Hoang's writing is so incredibly heartfelt. You can just feel how much she poured her soul into this novel and into Stella on every page. The Author's Note at the end only confirmed this feeling and gave me deeper insight into the book. This is such a beautiful story!I loved this love story between Stella and Michael. This story was so sweet, which I wasn’t expecting given the description letting you know that Michael is a prostitute. I thought that the author demonstrated many of the insecurities that many women have when trying to navigate relationships, and when autism is added in the mix, it made my heart soar. I have to commend the way Stella decided to go headlong into a life experience that for many people can be fleeting. I think many women try to compensate for many perceived insufficiencies to find love. It’s been a long time since I read a book that moved me so much.
