All We Ever Wanted by Emily Giffin Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this riveting novel from the #1 bestselling author of Something Borrowed and First Comes Love, three very different people must choose between their families and their most deeply held values. . . .

“An unpredictable page-turner that unfolds in the voices of three superbly distinct characters.”—The Atlanta Journal-Constitution • “A gripping, thought-provoking journey.”—Jodi Picoult

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THESKIMM

Nina Browning is living the good life after marrying into Nashville’s elite. More recently, her husband made a fortune selling his tech business, and their adored son has been accepted to Princeton.

Yet sometimes the middle-class small-town girl in Nina wonders if she’s strayed from the person she once was.

Tom Volpe is a single dad working multiple jobs while struggling to raise his headstrong daughter, Lyla. His road has been lonely, long, and hard, but he finally starts to relax after Lyla earns a scholarship to Windsor Academy, Nashville’s most prestigious private school.

Amid so much wealth and privilege, Lyla doesn’t always fit in—and her overprotective father doesn’t help—but in most ways, she’s a typical teenaged girl, happy and thriving.

Then, one photograph, snapped in a drunken moment at a party, changes everything. As the image spreads like wildfire, the Windsor community is instantly polarized, buzzing with controversy and assigning blame.

At the heart of the lies and scandal, Tom, Nina, and Lyla are forced together—all questioning their closest relationships, asking themselves who they really are, and searching for the courage to live a life of true meaning.

Good read. Not what I was expecting. Very realistic for today's times.

All We Ever Wanted. Sweet and not so sweet book. Couldn’t stop reading. Two hours late getting up right now. So “up to date” with life as it is in today’s world with women coming out of the dark and speaking out. But, with Finch getting off.

Boring. It was a boring read. I found it hard to stay interested in the book.

Amazing!!. This is my first read from her and I absolutely love this book! You really get to know the characters and feel for them. I absolutely loved Nina. I enjoy the POV chapters in books and this one was great!! Fast paced read.

All I Ever Wanted. Very well written and timely story about values, family, and the pull of materialism. It is nice to read a book that does not disappoint with its twists and turns and gives hope for the good in humanity.

What we were. Good Read

All We Ever Wanted. Loved the characters and drama of this story. Well built and gritty, I could tell you I know people just like them. I only gave four stars because I thought the author portrayed the older characters extremely well, but the teens were a bit less concrete .

All We Ever Wanted. This book is boring and cliche:(

All we ever wanted. All I ever wanted in a book! Love Emily Giffin books so much!

Don’t miss this. What a great read... love how the story is told from the perspectives of different main characters and the growth they experience. A book that is very hard to put down as you cheer on each of the characters and are simply reminded that “people matter”- inspiring! An added bonus is the “Nashville” scene- fun to recognize some Nashville hotspots and local lingo if you’re an insider.

So predictable and cliche.... Author took all the buzzwords of the last year and jammed them in a moralizing plot. Concocting a story based on regurgitated headlines is not literature

Great read. Nicely written, moves along quickly. Good story to read if you have or will soon have high school kids. Makes you think.

Loyal to others. I found the story line terribly sad mainly because it radiates so much truth in our times. The ending pulls it all together for a healing of the soul.

Horribly Cliche. The drama in this book is completely over-the-top. The characters are generic and stereotypical. The dialogue is laughable. Can’t believe I wasted my time and money...

It tries but doesn’t succeed.. The books tries to take on the “issues” of the obscenely wealthy vs. the “working man” but really only scratches the surface. I just kept waiting for an epiphany but it never happens. Middle class white girl marries very rich and privileged white boy. Together they raise an incredibly privileged and entitled kid. Blah, blah, blah. Author does write well therefore 3 stars.

Meh. Predictable and boring.

Wonderful. Beautifully written and touches on a topic that we all should be made aware of and fight for!

All I ever wanted. I wanted more...adult romance and justice for the younger characters and a more satisfying ending.

She does it again.... I have been reading her books for years... amazing!! I love all her books.. can’t put them down!!

Amazing. Read this in three days! It literally was amazing I couldn’t stop reading it!

Ehh. Least favorite novel by her thus far. I’d prefer a different concept, it read very immature to me.

Great read!. She said she felt that this was her best book to date, and she was 100% right!

Loved. Loved this book! The ending was a tad unsatisfying in a way, but besides that it was excellent

All We Ever Wanted. Love, love, love this book.

So good. Couldn’t put it down, finished it in a day and half. Wish we would of got more at the end rather then where it left off, but all in all an Awesome read.

Don’t waste your time. Bore Zzzz Don’t waste your time!

Politics made me quit reading. I was looking forward to reading this new book, but once politics were mentioned, I immediately stopped reading it. This country is divided enough without authors bringing it into a place I go to escape from the real world. This really disappoints me, and I won't be reading any more of her books.

A quick read. The book was a simple quick summer read. Nothing too riveting or exciting but it was good enough.

Could not put it down great story. I liked that it was believable and had a good ending

Not worth the time. Not worth the money or time. Written directly from today’s headlines and perfectly matches every stereotype from its depiction of rich white male to teenage boys and girls. Doesn’t seem genuine And feels more like an episode from Law an Order SVU which is a shame since these issues are real. There were moments while reading where I thought she was going to put in a twist only to be disappointed because it was so predictable. You know the next word, sentence or chapter without reading. Do not waste your time or money on this one.

Good Read. Emily Giffin always delivers. I’ve read all her books and I’m never disappointed. They are a easy read. This book had a good storyline and relevant to the “me to” movement.

No Wonder I Found This at Goodwill..spoilers. Wow. I am so disappointed in what this book could’ve been. It was a great read up until the end. There are some fun twists in the story but it seems that the author has been brainwashed by sexual assault perpetrators. The antagonist in this book gets away with sexual assault without even a slap on the wrist. And everyone is just fine and happy with it in this obscure universe! Or MAYBE it’s satire on how much we excuse the actions of white men? I’m not sure. I will continue to be disturbed.

Good but dropped off. I really liked the book. It covers a lot of common day issues relative to today’s world. I was disappointed how the story just ended abruptly and fast forwarded 25 years.

Don’t waist you tome. Not worth reading

All We Ever Wantedbyrfie. According to the author, rich people are not nice and those who are not wealthy can make fun of them. Let’s think about who does more philanthropically. There is also a 16 year old who has intercourse and is referred to in the book as a wonderful girl. I am thinking the author is leaning too much toward socialism. I did not enjoy this book.

All We Ever Wanted. Well written. Ending was disappointing.

All We Ever Wanted. This is an outstanding plot with real characters. It holds the readers interest, and does not follow the cliches of happily ever after stories. It draws in all walks of life, and has a wonderful way to remind the reader that people are people.

All We Ever Wanted. I thought it was very sophomoric! Written for a middle school audience. The ending wrapped rather abruptly in my opinion. A disappointment to me!

White privilege (yawn). I rarely write reviews but read all the time...this book was so full of white privilege and socioeconomic cliche that I could barely stand to finish it. I'm surprised it's a best seller, the characters are shallow and the plot is predictable. The only thing somewhat interesting us the topic of teens and the consequences social media can have.

Good Quick Read... Ending is Lacking. I enjoyed the read but thought the ending could have been better. It just seemed to end in an odd place.

All We Ever Wanted. I absolutely loved this book! I love all of Emily’s books. I will be on the lookout for her next novel!!

All We Ever Wanted. First book read by this author and I must say...she’s good!

All We Ever Wanted. Read this in one day, moves along fast. A family who discover they have grown apart when their son gets into a serious problem and how each feels they need to deal with it. A single father who will go to any length supporting his daughter with the respect she deserves. The story is a good read, with twist, two families facing a painful experience.
