Not my type of book but I CHERISHED it.. Couldn’t help thinking about the one surviving family member in the Branson, Missouri duck boat tragedy when nine members of her family died. How does one breath? How does one breath without debilitating pain? This book explores that pain… and the guilt of surviving. A magnificent book full of hope and grace. Read this book.

How in the world did this make it to print?. This book is one cliché after another. The denizens of Oceanside aren’t just troubled, they’re completely depraved (until our protagonist arrives and straightens them all out in a matter of months). Every character is two-dimensional and the narrative drags on and on without making you feel anything. The book is so insipid and uninteresting that I walked away, something I NEVER do. The most positive thing I take away from this experience is the conviction that any of us can write a best selling novel.

The Cottage on the Beach. Loved this story so much. We lost our son last month. He was only 54, with so much life left to live. His daughter, 22, has to carry on without him. And my husband and I are broken-hearted. We love him still, and find him everywhere we turn. We have wonderful memories of his life, and your story of love and loss helped me count my blessings.

BEAUTIFUL LOVE STORY!. Debbie Macomber’s Cottage by the Sea is a beautiful love story! After a terrible tragedy strikes, Annie decides to move to the one place that has always made her feel peaceful. At Oceanside, she develops deep friendships with three most most unlikely people. She also manages to discover the the thing she fears most is also the thing the thing her friend Keaton fears most. Can they trust their heart to another person after having it broken so badly in the past? Macomber weaves an beautiful story of putting broken people back together and changing their lives forever. I was provided an ARC of this book by the Publisher and NetGalley. The opinions expressed here are completely my own and without influence.

Cottage by the Sea. Contrary to some of the negative comments, I enjoyed this book.

Great. Great read

A VERY MOVING RESCUE THEME. When tragedy took the lives of Annie’s immediate family, she was left with feelings of despair, aloneness, depression, and low self worth. Annie had survival’s guilt and wanted to die with her family. However, her cousin urged her to go to a place in her life where she felt happy. As Annie traveled to a cottage by the sea, hope for a better, happier future slowly made its way into her life in the form of a quiet gentle giant, a recluse landlord, and other complex and troubled characters. This story was very entertaining, but it was also an emotional read. Many of the characters had to “let go” of past events to move forward, which was not an easy task. I also loved how the author incorporated the rescue theme throughout the story with both people and animals. A very well written story! Highly recommended!

Wonderful Story!. Debbie MacOmber never fails to write a fantastic book.

Beyond trite. Don’t waste your time.. This was one of the most inane and poorly written pieces of fiction I have ever read. The plot line is inane. The author repeated the same themes, barely altering the text, chapter after chapter.

Poorly developed. No depth.. The author might as well have stolen Beauty and the Beast and combined it with Toy Story to come up with this poorly developed novel. Pure bubblegum. So many opportunities to develop the psychological identities of her characters, but instead she turns in a high schoolish story. How the professional reviewers gave this book a thumbs up is beyond me. I’m a first time reader of this author. Others may love her, but there’s no depth in this author’s writing. Pure Lifetime movie junk.

Compelling & Emotional novel. Cottage by the Sea is the latest novel by Debbie Macomber. Thanksgiving is quickly approaching, and Annie Marlow’s mother wants her to come home to Seattle, Washington for the holiday. She is unable to change her schedule and Annie knows she will be home for Christmas. Annie regrets her decision when she receives a call from Aunt Sherry on Thanksgiving that the continual rains have caused her parents home to slide off the hillside. Annie has lost her entire family in one day. Sixteen months later, Annie has spiraled into intense depression and is suffering from survivor’s guilt. A counselor suggests Annie go somewhere that made her happy. She remembers family vacations in Oceanside and decides to visit. Annie feels at peace in the small town and decides to make a change. With the help of local painter, Seth Keaton, Annie is able to rent her family’s old vacation cottage and obtains a job. Annie wants to make a difference in people’s lives and starts with her curmudgeon of a landlord. In Oceanside, Annie finds a way to heal along with new friends and an unexpected romance. What happens, though, when Annie is presented with a wonderful opportunity? Cottage by the Sea is an engaging and emotional novel. My attention was captured right away, and it was held until I finished the story. Annie is devastated when she loses her parents, brother, sister-in-law and niece all in one day. She feels guilty for not joining them for Thanksgiving and sinks into a deep depression. Grief is a terrible thing and it is something a person can understand unless they experience it themselves (unfortunately). Cottage by the Sea is not your typical romance novel. It is a story of healing. Be prepared for your emotions to go on a roller coaster ride while reading Cottage by the Sea (you will need a hanky nearby). There is love, heartbreak, joy, hope, grief, guilt, humor and despair. Debbie Macomber created realistic characters who have real world problems. I enjoyed the small-town setting in the Pacific Northwest and the various animals in the story. Mellie Johnson is Annie’s landlord whose past continues to haunt her. Annie decides to befriend Mellie and her collection of romance novels help get her foot in the door. The secondary characters along with their story are as captivating as the main characters. Cottage by the Sea is different from this author’s other works (in a good way) and it does not end as you would expect. I was left with an unanswered question at the end of Cottage by the Sea (which I find frustrating) and the pacing could have used work in the second half. My rating for Cottage by the Sea is 4 out of 5 stars. If you are looking for a compelling new novel to read, pick up Cottage by the Sea.

A FEEL GOOD novel ..... Cottage By the Sea was a quick read. I enjoyed the characters and how their lives were connected.

One dimensional and predictable. The characters are irritating. The protagonist is too perfect. The storyline is completely predictable. As soon as a new character or plot line is introduced you know exactly what is going to happen.
