AN INTERVIEW WITH DEBORAH COONTS
Why did you decide to write humor?
I’m not sure I decided to add snark to the Lucky books, specifically to Lucky’s own voice, it just happened that way. When I was a kid, my mouth always got me into trouble. Finally, I’ve found a way to harness the sarcasm for the Forces of Good—or at least in a way not to anger my grandmother. And when Lucky started talking to me, she had a strong dose of sass in her.
The Lucky O'Toole Vegas Adventure series is hard to categorize. Is that by design?
When I set out to write Wanna Get Lucky?, I knew I wanted to write a romp through Las Vegas. I had the characters and the setting but no real understanding of narrative drive. So, I threw a young woman out of a tour helicopter into the middle of the Pirate Show and let the story unfold. A bit of murder to keep the plot moving, some wisecracking and Vegas mischief to make you laugh, and some romance to keep it interesting. A bit of a mash up, but it works.

Lucky Score. This is the latest edition byDeborah Coonts of her ‘Lucky’ series. It was excellent, as had been all her others. Writing about Las Vegas, a functioning dysfunctional person in a dysfunctional family, the sarcasm & wit, friendships, lovers, etc. make the stories enjoyable & real. I look forward to each new installment!
Lucky Score. Love All Deborah Coonts Books in the Lucky series so far & I am going to purchase the next one now 👍‼️
Another great few days in Vegas.... The Lucky O’Toole series is not to be missed. Fans of Stephanie Plum will love her as will anyone who loves a good mystery book told with a dash of humor. Add the cast of characters who become just a little more real with each book and you can’t miss. Do yourself a favor and do not miss the Lucky O’Toole books.
Lucky Score for me!. I was looking for a book when the title Wanna Get Lucky (by Deborah Coonts) caught my eye at Dollar General years ago, and Couldn't resist. Since then, I've read each of the Lucky books, waiting impatiently for each new book. I grew up reading mysteries, and still love them, but I've discovered a love for laughter, too. And reading Deborah Coonts' Lucky O'Toole series gives me both, just like reading Janet Evonovich's Stephanie Plum series, or Joanne Fluke's Hannah Swenson series. I can't wait till the Lucky series is picked up by Hollywood, and made into movies! ;)
Lucky Score. Fast paced with intrigue on every page. Lucky has a Murder to solve and needs all the help she can get, lucky takes you on an adventure with twists and turns that will need her to call in all her friends to solve. Follow Lucky in her latest adventure, you will be glad you did!
Is there anything that Lucky O’Toole can’t do?. Lucky O'Toole is back in action, and feistier than ever in this novel, the latest in the fabulously fun Lucky O'Toole Las Vegas Adventures series. I couldn't put it down! If there was a rating higher than five stars, I would gladly give it to Lucky Score. A murder of a famous politician, the NFL moving to Vegas, and her friends are in deep trouble. So what's a girl to do? Solve the murder, figure out the crime spree, and save her friends, of course, all while up to her proverbial butt in alligators! Who can she trust? How can she solve this mess? No one knows how, but if Lucky can't figure it out, no one can!
Lucky Score. I have enjoyed all of the Lucky O’Tool books. They are fun, well written, exciting and have some humor mixed in!
Lucky in Vegas. Another great Lucky adventure! Keeps you guessing ‘til the end. Nothing better than murder in Vegas!
The NFL Gets Lucky. Deborah Coonts has outdone herself again! This is another gem in the Lucky O’Toole series, and I had to fight the urge to burn through it in a single night. Mystery novels like these need to taken at least a little slowly so you can enjoy the many levels of Ms. Coonts’s story-telling genius. Of course there’s the mystery that only Lucky can solve. This one is connected to some off the field issues surrounding the movement of an NFL team to Las Vegas, and we get to see a side of the NFL that few of us ever experience. Then there are the constant challenges of her family and friends that always seem to get mixed into the current mayhem. Meanwhile, we see everything through Lucky’s own internal dialogue as she battles her personal demons. Finally, the author did not take the easy way out and avoid addressing the tragic murder of so many people in Las Vegas last October. Instead, Coonts handled it with sensitivity, insight and intelligence, making me kind of proud to be a Deborah Coonts fan. I really have no hesitation about giving this five stars. Personally, I wish that Lucky did a little less male-bashing … it seems there are men who bail her out of tough situations and who love her despite her unique challenges … but maybe that bit of growth is still to come for Lucky. Anyway, I loved the book and love Deborah Coonts!
Lucky to find this series !. I came across the first book in the Lucky O’Toole series when looking for some light beach reading and browsed the free iBooks. I didn’t really have any expectations but found myself immediately hooked. Now on the last book of the series, I really just don’t want it to end. The character of Lucky is so relatable as a woman. I love her brutal honesty with herself and those around her and the humor that she brings to even the darkest of scenarios. And then underneath it all is compassion and loyalty, without forgetting to mention her impeccable fashion sense and choice of cars. She’s luxurious but able to get her hands dirty if the situation calls for it. My kind of gal. Big thank you to the author. Wishing you continued success. Thank you for sharing your gift of writing with the world.
Great writer. I am alway sad when a good book ends especially ones that are written as well as this series.
Another Great Lucky O’Toole Adventure. I’ve been a fan of Lucky and her crazy Vegas life since I read the first installment of Deborah Coonts’s series years ago. This new adventure doesn’t disappoint. It’s non-stop action from the beginning, with loads of twists and turns. Lucky is still the smart and savvy character she was at the beginning, but she’s grown a lot. She’s questioning her life and choices, and wondering how to move forward with more balance. Family takes more of a back seat in this new tale, though there are still appearances by all the usual suspects. Much as I enjoyed the characters and mystery of the book, I was equally enamored with the writing style of Ms. Coonts. Her use of words is a joy. She has a way of phrasing things that is quite lyrical. That in itself made the book a delight to read. I would definitely recommend this book, though I would suggest starting from the beginning of the series to truly enjoy the way the characters have grown. (I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher.)
Great book — again.. Loved the latest Lucky installment. Can’t wait for the next.
Love Vegas and Lucky O’Toole!. As a huge fan of Las Vegas and Stephanie Plum, the “Lucky” series has been a perfect fit for me. I love Lucky’s brash and (mostly) confident personality, and the supporting cast is great as well. The numerous descriptions of “real” places in Vegas always bring me fond memories, and a wish for another trip there soon. I’m sad to see the series coming to an end. I hope the twins will have names before it’s over!

Lucky Score. Deborah’s fans are legion, and ‘Lucky Score,’ with its great character build-up, witty dialogue, and its mandatory plot twists and turns, could not help but keep everyone enthralled until the last page, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, place no more bets.’ The morning birds were singing as I neared the final reveal as to which ‘Lucky Score’ characters were deserving to be on Santa’s list to either receive a lump of coal or a seasonal treat. Thank you, Deborah, for continuing to entertain me and your other readers who with ‘Lucky Score’ must feel as if they have received another fabulously freshly baked and finely decorated cake. However, readers should be careful and forewarned that the entertaining crumbs dropped by your books onto their lap can leave an indelibly cozy reading impression on one’s heart and mind. “I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher.” Mardz A.
