The Outsider by Stephen King Book Summary

Now an HBO limited series starring Ben Mendelsohn!

Evil has many faces…maybe even yours in this #1 New York Times bestseller from master storyteller Stephen King.

An eleven-year-old boy’s violated corpse is discovered in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City’s most popular citizens—Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon have DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

As the investigation expands and horrifying details begin to emerge, King’s story kicks into high gear, generating strong tension and almost unbearable suspense. Terry Maitland seems like a nice guy, but is he wearing another face? When the answer comes, it will shock you as only Stephen King can.

The Outsider. I’m sorry to say this book came off pretty corny. I kept hoping I would get to the end long before I did.

One of King’s best.. I overall just absolutely loved reading this. I was sooo invested the entire time. Highly recommend.

Read!. Watched the HBO series first which was well done, as always though the book blows it out of the water. Highly Recommend.

Worth the Read 100%. Title says it all. King did a great job of making it hard to put this one down. No disappointments whatsoever. Kudos for a great novel.

King at his best!. Didn’t want to put this one down! Gripping from the first page to the last word. A must read!

Fantastic book. Easy, quick read.. I loved this book. That’s all. Please read it.

Good but I did not like the ending. When I finished reading it. I felt like the villain himself was not worthy of all that good writing that led up to him finally being revealed at the end. He seemed thin and two dimensional to me. It bums me because if he’d been really good. This book would have been five stars for me.

Must Read!. Amazinggggg!!!!! I couldn’t stop reading it! Saw the show right after. The show was good but the book was way better!

It was ok. First Half of Book: Phenomenal..very riveting Second Half of Book: Dragged on and on and on Basically I found myself enjoying the “natural” portion of book...got bored with the “supernatural” section FYI: I am a dedicated Stephen King reader, I have read almost all his books; therefore I understand his material.

The Outsider. Although I’ve watched and enjoyed many movies based on Stephen King’s books or short stories, this was the first book I’ve read. It was absolutely wonderful! I’ll be reading more now that I know what a fantastic writer this author is! Just as I’ll always remember Andy and Red from Shawshank Redemption, I’ll always remember the protagonists Holly and Ralph in this book, who kept an open mind to solve the mysteries. The antagonists or outsiders with all their worms will be hard to forget as well. Might keep a sock loaded with ball bearings in the first aid kit - just kidding! King is a brilliant writer!

Exciting.... Until the end. Left so many questions and felt incomplete

Page turner!. Genuinely struggled to quit reading the book most of the time. It’s such an entertaining and mysterious thriller that I couldn’t stop turning the pages. Read it every chance I could get...going to the bathroom, walking inside stores, waiting in drive-thru’s, etc. Highly recommend, well worth the read.

Awesome awesome awesome!!!!!!. It was pretty gruesome but I loved finding another Stephen King gem that was truly worth the money 2400 pages and I read it all in less than a week!

Well Done!. As always, Mr. King never ceases to amaze and keep me captivated and this one was a great read!

Thought it was great!. I loved this book from start to finish. If you don’t already know, characters from Mr Mercedes, Finders Keepers and End Of Watch are featured. If you’re interested, you might start with them first.

Cliche at best. I don’t get all the rave reviews. The characters are cliché and the murder is just a gross fantasy. If this were written by anyone else it’d be more clear to people.

Hard to read. Hey y’all, I’m new to this group. So Y’all I’m reading Stephen king “the outsider” Trigger warning.. if you are sensitive to sexual trauma DO NOT PICK UP THIS BOOK… I’m having trouble getting through chapter 21 as I post and debating if I wanna keep going… it’s just really harsh and if you are sensitive again this is not the book for you. I’m asking without any spoilers do y’all think that it’s worth finishing? The interrogation itself makes me cringe and I don’t like how detailed he created…

One of my favorites. I had a paperback copy of this book when I first read it and I have never enjoyed a book more than this one. Stephen King is honestly an amazing author and the pure horror of this masterpiece and the detail and just overall feel of the storyline is bone chillingly amazing. The character development is incredible and the inclusion of old folklore is just honestly incredible. I definitely recommend this book for a read, especially if you’re a horror fan.

Excellent Read. Great story. Read the book in one night!

Great!. My second experience with Stephen. I read both The Institute and The Outsider in a little over two weeks. I haven’t actually read a book in a few years. I listen to audio all the time but never seem to have time to sit down and read. Something caught my eye with The Institute and once I started I had a hard time putting it down. As soon as I finished my sister insisted I read this one and it did not disappoint! Again, I had a hard time putting it down. I do have to say that the end had me expecting more. I didn’t believe that the Outsider was really gone and I kept anticipating something else happening. It’s possible he left it that way thinking there may be a sequel. Either way it was good and I couldn’t put it down! Definitely recommend it. On to number three with The Talisman.

Crazy. This book is weird and crazy, but it’s good.

Captivating. Very captivating story. Loved it

Shocking. Amazing and shocking, gruesome but couldn’t put the book down. I recommend to my friends and family

It’s too easy.. The book was one of the best I have ever read until the supernatural element got involved. Since one could employ super nature almost without limitations, the story becomes cheap and cliché. I guess eventually, you can’t make one man “appear at different places at the same time.” Mission failed.

Spooky and captivating. My mom and I are big Stephen King fans and this book was one of the bests! The story line was fantastic and kept me on my toes!

A great book!. This is an intriguing book. Now I’m going to read Mr. Mercedes next because of that character, Holly Gilney.

Couldn’t put the book down!. Picked it up from Barnes & Noble just because I wanted something to read but didn’t end up starting it till a few days later. Regret. The book kept me on my toes and has a good build of suspense and mystery to it. Each new clue got you thinking about what could happen next or what a character might say or react! The ending was good and left me satisfied. I even think a sequel of some sort would be great.

Fantastic. Kept me on my toes the whole time

Amazing. Yet another amazing novel! Everyone I know will be hearing about it for the next couple of weeks!!!

Here’s the deal. I’m in the middle of the book right now but when I finish it , when the movie comes out this year then imma see it , SOUNDS LIKE A PLAN !

Gripping. Enjoyed reading this book. Keeps you interested throughout. Entertaining.

The Outsider. Not his best work. Too unbelievable and too much Holly.

Great read!. Really gripping story the whole way through!

A True Page Turner. The kind of King novel you can’t put down. Up many late nights flipping madly through the pages. Great build up and character arcs. One of his best.

F’ing Amazing. Let me be honest here, this was the first book I read for enjoyment since high school (which was 5 years ago) and of course I chose Stephen king. This had to be one of the most interesting paranormal vs. reality books I have read in a very long time. The consistency of his details in this unraveling story as the truth is revealed was truly amazing. It took me a little longer to finish because I literally did not want it to end. However, it was worth the read and I’m still a little sad it finished. Great job Stephen King! On to the next one of your amazing writings.

Great Book!. Definitely a book that explores more the characters than the actual threat towards the characters. Would definitely recommend!

Not the greatest. this book was pretty good but definitely not one of my favorites by Steven king. It was hard to get into - held me for a while - then hard to finish.

Top Notch Thriller. It is amazing to me that Mr. King keeps getting better and better. I finished this in two days.

Great Read. Their have been so many bad Stephen king TV shows that I forget what an amazing writer he is! Attention to detail and phrasing is perfect! The pace of the book is even with no apparent sections of “not much going on”. A definite page tier we that makes you want to read more!

Always Guessing. I couldn’t put this book down. The characters and the plot were done perfectly. Whenever I thought everything made sense I was always thrown for a loop. It was the fact that I could never expect what was going to happen next. Awesome writing, I could read it over and over. If you love thrillers I highly recommend this book.

Anticlimactic. I enjoyed the book overall, but was a bit disappointed how the altercation between the detectives and “the outsider” turned out.

Awesome book!. Great read!

Give me more!. Riveting! Couldn’t put it down. Highly recommend

“People are blind to explanations that lie outside their perception of reality.”. This was a fun read. Couldn’t stop reading. Didn’t want to stop. It was fun to discover more of what this monster was with the rest of the characters. The monster was a take on the boogeyman. More so el cuco. At least that’s what it seemed since they were all relating it to el cuco. It was weird at times to think it’s a bunch of Americans taking down a Mexican legend. An old Mexican legend taken down a little too easily. Besides that, I was taken back by Sablo, the Mexican officer. The way he spoke seemed weird and out of date. He called Anderson ese. He said ay caramba. Honestly, I would have believed he was Mexican American without the Spanish. He knew the lore of el cuco and even knew about the luchadoras. That would have been enough. Holly and Anderson however were my favorite. I liked reading how they investigated and found out details. This makes me want to read the Bill Hodges Trilogy. I recommend this book if you’re thinking about reading it. It was fast and fun. One thing I appreciate about King’s writing is how it reads like a movie. The visuals and sounds are there. And every ending has its cliff hanger that leads into the next part.

Entertaining Read. There was an abundance of suspenseful moments and inexplicable mysteries to be solved, all of which panned out quite satisfyingly. The characters in the book were well developed and entertaining, helping to add lightheartedness to the story. I’d say the climax could have been more terrifying but I really can’t complain given the rest of the story. This story definitely scratched my itch for a thriller/mystery.

Absolutely gripping. Once I started this I couldn’t put it down until it was over.

Very satisfied. My eyes glued to each page, heart racing, chewing on my nails, scared at some points to where I couldn’t get up to pee without feeling all heeby geeby. Just about the best book I have read in a while!

Disappointed. This book has a promising beginning but man, does it go downhill fast. The premise allows for something very interesting, but the story turns into something very juvenile. The villain is a strange, silly choice. Unfortunately that is not the worst part of this book. The characters are stereotypical, poorly developed and predictable. Yune and Holley are the worst. Yune is supposed to be Mexican-American and at the beginning of the book frequently uses the word “ese.” By the end of the book he inexplicably uses more and more Spanish in his speech. Does King know any Mexican-Americans? This caricature makes me believe that he does not. Then there’s Holley. We for sure know Holley is 1) meek and mild, but only until she needs not to be 2) very thin. Oh and she loves Walmart and has grey hair. In essence she is the trope of all tropes. A timid woman who is actually very intelligent, strong and can and will save the day, but will still blush when complimented. These characters are flat and can in no way make up for the supremely absurd plot.

Stunning. This book throws you into the scene right away with not much to work with. Absolute classic loved it

not what i expected. a murder mystery is kind of unusual territory for stephen king. i liked it a lot and the characters felt very human. i loved the way you could feel them changing as the plot progressed. in a lot of his books the characters are almost unrealistically quick to accept the supernatural. this feels like a more realistic take. it does drag on too long and a lot of the content is people sitting around in various suburban locations just chatting. unlike a lot of king's books which are too long because they take a very winding path to the finish, jumping around between fringe characters who will probably never appear again, this one just drags on in a straight path, cycling between the same characters and locations until like the third act where there's some action. fortunately it's a stephen king novel so every word is intoxicating, this man could write an academic paper on soil and i would eat it up. i will say it didn't keep me on the edge of the seat like a lot of his books have. still very much worth a read.

The Outsider. Stephen King at his best. Loved it

Great book!. Couldn’t put it down!!

The Outsider… great story!. Well written and keeps you wanting to continue reading… storyline and characters all well put together.

Amazing. It’s freaking awesome book/novel, it’s one of those when you read one paragraph and never stop reading it until done!!!

The Outsider. A Brilliantly thought out plot line, and an overall captivating read.

The Outsider. Such a good book! I haven’t read Steven King in years but this one looked good and so it was! I seriously did not want to put it down. Highly recommend

Fantastic Book. I have spent the past year catching up on some good old Stephen King classics and just happened to pick this up on a routine trip to Wally World where it’s brand new. Classic King here. Nothing really overly new or shocking about the story but his ability to tell stories has certainly becoming better with time and this book is DEFINITELY worth a read. (Spoiler Maybe?) There is also a character from the “Bill Hodges” Trilogy involved in this book in case any fans of that series are interested to know. But I’m not giving out the name. You gotta read it for yourself ladies and gentlemen.

Unexpected and thrilling. Being my first Stephen King book to read, I found the first half trilling and then the introduction of the vicious “character” surprisingly unexpected. It was a hard book to put down and believably scary from start to finish.

Outsiders. Amazing so far
