In Pieces by Sally Field Book Summary

In this haunting memoir, an American icon tells her story of a challenging childhood, the craft that helped her find her voice, and a powerful legacy that shaped her journey as a daughter and a mother.

One of the most celebrated and beloved actors of our time, Sally Field has an infectious charm that has captivated the nation for more than five decades. From the dazzling complexity of Sybil, to the Academy Award-winning performances in Norma Rae and Lincoln, Field has stunned audiences time and time again with her artistic range and emotional acuity. Yet there is one character who always remained hidden: the shy and anxious little girl within.

With raw honesty, humility, and authenticity her fans have come to expect, Field brings readers behind-the-scenes for not only the highs and lows of her star-studded early career in Hollywood, but deep into the truth of her lifelong relationships–including her complicated love for her own mother.

Powerful and unforgettable, In Pieces is an inspiring account of life as a woman in the second half of the twentieth century.

Couldn’t put it down. Four stars because even though I skimmed over the Hollywood jargon, as that bored me, the writing kept me interested. I always admired Sally for staying more private as she gave us everything on the screen. I just didn’t understand the sadness or lack of excitement for career acknowledgements and support plus family members support she did have especially for her children. The book came across a little selfish , and negative, but if that is what Sally wanted to say...it is her feelings and book! I don’t know if I would have been that honest to my Mom telling her everything about her former husband when she was so ill, but Sally’s love came through at the end!

Gut wrenching. This is one of those books you can't do anything else but read in one day. Her voice, her drive, her confusion and her resolve are all quite palpable

Not your typical memoir. So much more than a typical fluff Hollywood memoir. Honest, probing, thoughtful and truly introspective. Insight into what really is a very complicated life full of trials, tribulations, successes and failures — just like most lives — even the famous ones. Highly recommend.

Beautifully written and brutally open. Sally Field holds nothing back. It is a journey into her life, her lives, her joy and her pain. It is well-written and many will be able to relate. She definitely is a strong woman.

Engaging!. It was a very good read! I’ve always admired Field. I am about13 years younger , but I was a fan from the start! I’ve seen many of her projects, yet some I have not. It was interesting to see inside a Hollywood family- I always thought she was a child actress! I definitely applauded the cast of Sybil! They insured that Sally could do the outstanding work before her! Some directors don’t have the vision needed for complex projects like Sybil was- I still think it’s her greatest work! Burt Reynolds... O M Goodness.... It’s funny how she waited until he died to publish the book.... and her Mom ... and Step Dad.... I would LOVE to meet her... it would be the greatest! Oh ! And I cried- for at the end- her mother dying- we experienced very similar situations. However I talked to my mother years before she died about the sexual abuse of my life. But I’m sure it’s so much more detrimental when it’s at the hands of a parent figure... I’m glad she shared her story- especially how her ART saved her and propelled her forward.... This work was Courageous!

Always loved Sally. My daughter Tammy has been told many times over the years she looks like Sally. We have been her greatest fan and this book is wonderfully written. Some areas... especially the child birth section had me laughing out loud! Always wondered about Burt’s role in her life and this was nice to finally know. Thank you Sally! Couldn’t put it down & now I can get some sleep😂

Touched. I never write reviews, but this book has moved me. “In Pieces” is composed of the ragged edges that is real life but in it wholeness is as pure as gold. Sally, thanks, you touched my heart.

In pieces by Sally Fields. Thank you Sally for sharing your wonderful/and not so wonderful experiences with life...I admire you on and off the screen. May life bring nothing but pure happiness and joy...Best wishes to you and your family. TK NoBear Eagle Bear Ranch. Sisters, Oregon

In Pieces by Sally Field. What a compelling read. I found myself comparing things in my life. Sally’s last few pages were heart wrenching and I cried about the poignant way she loved her mother. Thank you Sally Field for sharing yourself with us.

in Pieces. Sally Field‘s Book is absolutely wonderful. Thanks for sharing your Story. There are many more of us than would be Imagined.

In pieces. Amazing. She should write a second. I could not put this book down.

Can’t find the words…. I just finished this amazing book. I have always loved Sally Field, the actress, and now I love Sally Field, the person. She has written a masterpiece here, and it is worthy of one of her incredible performances, but truly only Sally herself could play the part. I hope she comes to know the very God who made her, and can accept that she is loved by Him and so many others, and then can love herself.

Sally Field In Pieces. I loved it...she’s complicated like all of us.

In pieces. The book was mainly her movie life , I guess I was looking for more

Thank you for sharing all our pieces. Thank you Sally for your commitment to sharing your vulnerable truths....your words are transfixed in my heart....you really are good enough in every way as I know I am....I want to hug you for a long time but I may never get that chance...my appreciation for your courage to share your life story will go on for forever....I pray every person in the world reads your book and they look with open eyes at their family anew with love and acceptance....

Overall Depressing. Pretty depressing......

Beautiful. Very emotional. Very well written.

Good page turner. A Sally Field we didn’t know. I loved this book.

Authentic, moving. Sally Field does in her writing what she has always done in her acting. She has proven to be truthful, vulnerable and inspiring.

In Pieces. I almost hate to say this after reading Sally Fields book since she was very honest in her writings about how she felt doing "Gidget and " The Flying Nun", but I fell in love with her after watching every show in both series. I have not missed one movie Sally Fields has been in and I was never disappointed! So I was anxious to read her book and was consumed with her own words and feelings. I would have never thought she had to fight so hard to simply show the world how talented she is. I am so thankful she choose to share. Many of her experiences have been endured by others. That she kept on refusing to give up on herself is a message every woman needs to hear. I laughed and sobbed and thanked God that she was able to gift her triumphs and tragedies with those of us who have been entertained by her and loved every minute of it. This book is the icing on the cake! Thank you Sally!

Who knew?. An amazing book, a story bravely told. I was absolutely engaged through every chapter. Sally Field is an inspiration. Wow!

Total Honesty. Sally Field has written of her life with a total honesty that will be hard to duplicate. Her writing and her acting are both amazing. I’m sure her struggle to be herself and a loyal, loving daughter will help me be a better mother to my daughter. It’s never too late to love. Thank you, Ms Field.

Thank you, Sal. I’m at a loss for words to describe my reaction to those words which, thankfully Ms Fields was able to find for this precious book. If I may address you: you have always made yourself seem so accessible to me, to us your viewing audience. We felt we knew you and that you were near perfect. But it turns out we didn’t know you at all. You could have left us with that illusion of a perfect life. Instead, you bravely bared your soul and for that I would like to thank you. Reading your book helped me; I hope it helped you as much to write it. Now that I have read your book, I no longer think you had a perfect life but you have wrestled it to the ground perfectly.

It was ok. Some parts of the book were very detailed; others completely glossed over.

In pieces by Sally Field. Didn’t like it...I always liked her as an actress but after this book I think she is a self centered egomaniac. The book is full of poor me. Who cares.

In pieces. This is a master piece , leaving prejudice aside and writing from the heart.

In Pieces. Wow. Awesome story of Sally Field’s life. She has overcome so much and she tells her truth not for us to feel sorry for her but as a way to share her truth. I remember her as Gidget and have watched her grow into one of the worlds best actress.

In Pieces. A lovely and soul searching read. The humanness that connects us all is all too real and lifts off the pages to look you in square in the eye.

Sally you always give us your entirety.. Thank you for sharing the private you.

Thought provoking story about mother and daughter. Sally Field is one of of my favorite actresses because of what I interpret to be honesty underneath the celebrity persona. She validated this in her recent autobiography. The running theme of the book is about her relationship with her mother. A loving but complicated relationship due mostly to outside influences and their inability to communicate about what was going on at the time. Tidbits of her celebrity past including high profile relationship with Burt Reynolds scatter throughout the book but it’s mostly about Sally, her family, kids and drive for a career as an actress. I wasn’t sure what to expect but am glad I read it.

In Pieces. Words fail me in describing how gripping this biography was. But I will recommend it to all my friends. I’ve always loved Sally Field, but now I want to go out and see all the films she was in with new eyes.

Wonderful Recipes. This book is chuck full of wonderful recipes. The tuna melt sandwiches with avocado, walnut and banana was fantastic. I also especially liked the roast beef compote with apricot jelly. Then there was cashew mustard and pecan spaghetti sauce served with garlic sautéed capers - absolutely to die for. Who would have thought Ms. Field had talents on the kitchen equal to her on screen abilities.

Sally Fields In Pieces. With every page there is a reflection of every woman with or without the shame associated with physical or sexual abuse. Ms. Fields is a survivor of womanhood. It is a story that says for better or worse, if you love me or hate me, I am here so get used to it cause I’m not leaving...

Unexpected and hard to put down. Sally puts her heart and soul into this memoir, as she has done with her acting career. She lays it all out there for everyone to see. Wonderful insights into the struggle of making it in Hollywood. Fascinating and raw. What you may think you know about a celebrity is no where close to reality. Good job, Sally!

In Pieces. A fabulous book written by a courageous women . I have had a crush on Sally for decades and have only met her once on the set of E.R . We spoke of her accepttince speech at the Academy Awards and she gushed at my mention “ oh God “ as embarrassed . Her quote “You liked me ? “ I told her was lovely . It was and so is she . This book is a must read for anyone who has struggled with a secret for far too many years . Thank you Sally

Excellent writing. I’m 74 and remember each movie. Sally Field is one of my favorite actors. I am a counselor at Gateway City Church in San Jose and see women who have had a similar journey. They need to hear this story. Beautifully written with vulnerability, courage, honesty and even humor. God bless Sally Field as her strength lives on in the legacy of her children and grandchildren.

Before I read. I went to grade school at Eagermont (spelling?) with your sister Princess.. I remember those times as yesterday. My friend Lisa Wedd’s older sister was trying out for the same part in the “Flying Nun”. This was from the sister so not confirmed. I have always enjoyed your performance in all that you have done, my favorite will always be in Forest Gump.. Growing up with all of the stars that were stars of the time was very interesting at that time. My own mother was trying hard then too. You can catch her in an old Walt Disney film called the “The Tattooed Police Horse”. Needless to say she was a better stay at home mother than an actress. Very nice to share old times though not really memorable to you. Very fond memories for me though I moved on from the city life long ago, I will never forget my childhood memories. They are the best! Sunnie

Crap. Really, sally get a current untouched photo. Your glamor days are over.... go Burt.

Candor and Bravery. Amazing! “In Pieces” could have been twice as long and still been captivating. The memoir stands in stark contrast to the persona the public has been fed and illuminates the realities of a full life. Bravo, Ms. Fields, for you candor and bravery in sharing your truth.

Profound honesty. Just as you said in the book, when approaching this book I worked on becoming you in my mind. I did my best to read this from your eyes. In doing that, I found you hurting, insecure and always searching but able to somehow rise above and be the wonderful actress you are. I hope that this book was as cathartic to you as I felt it should be and that now you are able to look back with a clearer eye. I truly enjoyed reading this memoir. Thank you.

Very Interesting. Not the carefree Sally I thought I knew! She really bares it all here and that is at times difficult to read but it is her truth and if you grew up watching the flying nun and Gidget like I did then you’ll enjoy this book. We like you Sally, we really do.

Outstanding read, I couldn’t put t down!. Dear Sally Field, I don’t know if you read these comments or not. Judging from the book, you probably won’t but I thought this book was outstanding. It’s the first book since OUTLANDER and VOYAGER that I couldn’t put down. You are a very skilled author. Thank you!

Eye opening. From Gidget to Mary and beyond one of my favorite actresses gives us a close up look behind the curtain. Great Read.

Powerful Message In Pieces. Absolutely, positively, seriously one of the best autobiographies I have ever read. Written with candid, direct, no holds barred honesty, this should be required reading for anyone searching for the shared truth of our human experience. Don't think because the author originally worked as an actress in obsequious 1960's television programs that this is a voice without value. Read it and weep for this women's struggle to connect with the core of her own authentic self.

A Truly Worthy Read!. There were times I felt unsettled , discomforted, slightly judgmental, yet engaged and empathetic throughout! Thank you for your honesty and candor spun with sensitivity & clarity! Your life story reminded me that truth is harder than lies and of such greater value as we grow into the measure of our creation!

In Pieces. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this autobiography. Sally Field has always been a favorite of mine. You never know what a person is living behind closed doors. She endured a lot and was still an inspiration to so many, myself included.

In Pieces. Good read, sometime too wordy, but still enjoyed.

In Pieces. Absolutely stunning.
