Past Tense by Lee Child Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • THE BLOCKBUSTER JACK REACHER SERIES THAT INSPIRED TWO MAJOR MOTION PICTURES AND THE UPCOMING STREAMING SERIES REACHER

Family secrets come back to haunt Jack Reacher in this electrifying thriller from “a superb craftsman of suspense” (Entertainment Weekly).

Jack Reacher hits the pavement and sticks out his thumb. He plans to follow the sun on an epic trip across America, from Maine to California. He doesn’t get far. On a country road deep in the New England woods, he sees a sign to a place he has never been: the town where his father was born. He thinks, What’s one extra day? He takes the detour.

At the same moment, in the same isolated area, a car breaks down. Two young Canadians had been on their way to New York City to sell a treasure. Now they’re stranded at a lonely motel in the middle of nowhere. The owners seem almost too friendly. It’s a strange place, but it’s all there is.

The next morning, in the city clerk’s office, Reacher asks about the old family home. He’s told no one named Reacher ever lived in town. He’s always known his father left and never returned, but now Reacher wonders, Was he ever there in the first place?

As Reacher explores his father’s life, and as the Canadians face lethal dangers, strands of different stories begin to merge. Then Reacher makes a shocking discovery: The present can be tough, but the past can be tense . . . and deadly.

This edition includes an excerpt of Lee Child’s novel Blue Moon.

One of the better ones. I don’t understand the negative reviews. I thought this was one of the better Reacher books. I’ve read all of them. Great plot threads. Can’t say more without being a spoiler.

Don’t bother. Read any other two Reacher books and you’re better qualified to write this questionable story line than whoever did...

Loves his words. Almost like The Last of the Mohicans , so many words to describe anything and 90% of action in last 15% of the book.Reacher doesn't walk to a place, instead we are intreated to the weather, the size of his foot, the condition of the road bed, smell of the air, the surrounding countryside and how he feels. Then we get to is thoughts etc.. All of this for a 30 minute walk! Almost half a chapter.

Excellent book. Good characters and typical Reacher situations.

Awful. This was the worst in the series. No point to any of the story lines. Anticlimactic. Sad. I really enjoyed this series until this one.

Slow. I do not recommend. Slow moving and odd ending. None of your nicknames work if you give this a poor review!

Good yarn. Good yarn

Loved It!. I never wanted this story to end. Loved it from the first word to the last. Makes me wonder how he thinks up such unique situations. Mr. Child’s writing style is probably the most satisfying I’ve ever read. I think it’s the short sentences. Lot’s of sentences with less than 5 words (Reacher said nothing) and I love it. I also appreciate how I never feel lost or frustrated that I don’t know what’s going on. I never feel confused or like I missed something. As soon as a wee bit of confusion starts creeping into my mind, Mr. Child brings out a name or a sound or a place or a color that centers me and lets me know exactly where I’m at. Well done Mr. Child. Please never stop writing these novels.

Not my favorite of the Reach series.. Too convoluted for me. I love the Jack Reacher stories and normally enjoy them so much I can’t put them down, but this one just seemed to be all over the place. Most of it tied together in the end but there were parts that just didn’t belong really and never came together. Don’t get me wrong, I would still read it, but just not my favorite. Thank you!

Did not finish.. Dint care for book. Just couldnt get into it so quit reading.

The Reacher series. Mr. Child has held me captive since Killing Floor. I haunt the new releases eagerly awaiting each new Jack Reacher thriller! I feel I know his character from a coffee order to his rank of Major in the military. The story lines are always new, yet readers can be assured every adventure will be true to Reacher’s way. I can’t wait to turn the next page to be in on the action, while knowing and dreading it’s drawing Closer to the end of the story. I never want there to be a last novel!!!! May Jack Reacher rule until I can no longer read or hear! Can you tell I’m a fan?? Reacher Roadie

Dr. So e tsar

Past Tense. Another five star book from Mr. Child. Sir; your ability to write a story is amazing. I could not put this book down. The attention to detail, the twists: You find yourself saying " one more chapter ". Looking forward to the next Reacher adventure.

Past Tense. Not up to previous quality

My Dad Loves Jack Reacher. My dad loves this series so much, he has read almost all of the Jack Reacher books. I’ve never tried it, but it looks incredibly interesting. When he doesn’t have a book, he goes out to get it from the bookstore or the library. He also watches the movies. Whenever I ask him, “Dad, what’s your favorite book?” he answers without hesitation “Probably Lee Child’s Jack Reacher books.”

Very Poor Editing. The book through Apple Books is a mess. Way too many truncated paragraphs that stop mid-sentence. Many many typos. The book and story line is not up to Lee Child’s normally good work. Convoluted and disjointed exacerbated by the above issues. A big disappointment.

Worst Reacher. I've read all the Reacher books (some more than once) this is by far the worst one. If you're just getting into Reacher books don't start with this one.

My first Jack Reacher book and I honestly couldn’t put it down.. Not my cup of tea, I used to say when people suggested this series. Now, I’m hooked. It’s smart, quick and entertaining - nothing wrong with that. And he’s a good guy. I always like to read about the kindness of strangers. But I have to find out more about him now....

Not good. I have read all of the jack reacher books over and over and they all are intense and great read. Anticipated another and big dissapointment. This book mostly put me to sleep for 85% of the book and only moderately good the other 15%. Not sure Lee Child even wrote it so far from the quality writing in the rest of the series

Disappointing. Unfortunately, Mr. Child has written the worst of Reacher’s books - I have read all of them. Long and tedious narratives about irrelevant facts, senseless characters with no credibility (the guys running the motel?), few exciting parts, Reacher missjng from about 50% of the book. It seems another writer took over.?A major disappointment for me, didn’t see it coming.

Past Tense. Not a good book. Read many Reacher books. This one stinks. Slogged through 150 pages and gave up. Waist of money.

Sounds good .. This book sounds wonderful. A lot of travel and struggles . Lots of flashback without hi father to lean on his journey .

Not his best..... Not up to par with past books. Lee seems to be just be filling pages with words. Rambling, disjointed plot.

Past tense. I would have liked to have written a review on this book, but I can't even open it. It tells me that it's in a format that iBooks can't open...?

Tracing Reachers roots. About finding roots of Reachers father. And the bad guys had a business selling black web nighttime bow and arrow hunting and killing humans for sport.

Not up to standard. This book did not meet the very high standard of other Lee Child books. It seemed almost like two unrelated stories forced into one story with so many irrelevant parts. And I am all for unusual storylines but this one was just too far fetched and I could hardly wait to finish it. Had to skim parts so you get it that it wasn’t my favorite.

past tense. I never expect less from Mr. Child than a great read with our hero Jack Reacher. Perfect prose, solid story and even though you know Reacher will prevail, it’s still a wild ride. Read every book, this might be my favorite. Keep them coming !

Not good.. This was not my favorite. Really not sure why he wrote this. Two stories really did not intersect. “Bow Hunting People” at the hotel is disturbing. We were never told why or how this got started. It was all a mess.

Great read. Never read a bad Reacher book. A tad confusing at the end- so pay attention. But you won’t be sorry you spent the money. Definitely hard to put down.

Past Tense. Another wonderful story about this man Jack Reacher...I wish more were made into movies. There are so few good movies being made anymore. Too, I wish when they do make a Jack Reacher movie, they’d more properly cast his character. Jack Reacher is written as about 6ft 5inches tall and heavily built....their pick of Tom Cruise is WAY OFF...he’s a little bitty guy. Five feet and a few.....

Jack Reacher Past Tense. As usual Reacher serves as judge jury and executioner ,However ,this book took some unusual twists and turns that were not expected . I read hour book in 5 hours as I was captivated by the action .

Past Tense. I’ve read every one of the “Reacher” books. I enjoyed them. This was the worst, by far, of any. I’d bet dinner that Lee Child didn’t write it. In fact, perhaps the worst book I’ve ever read.

Jack Reacher 0Past Tense. Excellent, compelling read right to the last page.

Past Tense. Dumb. Very disappointed. Hard to follow 2 storylines. Waiting for the next Reacher book with hopes that the formula of Reacher returns.

PAST TENSE. Not his best by far!! Hard to concentrate, the story took you to too many place at once. Disappointing!

Another one. None of the Reacher books disappoint. Great reading.

Surprise. This was very smooth and suspenseful. Wow what a surprising ending. Nice 😊. I really enjoyed it. Thanks for the adventure 🌹

Past Tense. Not a good book. Time to end Reacher series

Good but not great. Typical to lee's work, a real page turner. Very well scripted with a strong storylines! But the ending seemed predictable and less "Reacher". Still enjoyed and recommend.

Can’t believe I read as much as I did. This Reacher book, unlike any other, comes across (at least as far as I read) as bad Stephen King. I don’t know what happens and I don’t care. The actual chapters with Reacher were okay but most of the action happens away from him and it’s simply not absorbing or entertaining.

CNN m m I’m I’m s. Mc I’mdl mngny inh I’mg I’m I’m

Classic Reacher. No disappointment. Child delivers again. I’d like to write the screenplay

Not his best. Plot not very original and characters not very compelling

Past tense. Fast paced but predictable

Master of story telling. Finding his father was a nice surprise. The way he handled Mark was even better. Two for one stories.

Love this character. This series is great, and this title continues his legacy.

Too bad Lee Child is writing movie scripts not books any more. Decent read but obviously trying to get the book and script in one issuance. Would look good and dramatic on a screen but fails in written form. Starting to lose interest....

Past Tense. Awesome! One of the best Reacher adventures I’ve read. Lee Child never disappoints!

Past tense. Not child’s best effort Did not pick you up and keep you enthralled

Past Tense. Awful

Past Tense. Not the usual Reacher book but we learn a little bit more of the history of what makes the man.

Past Tense. Poor effort. Very disconnected storylines that are forced together. Neither terribly believable. Clunky is the word that fits best. Won’t waste twenty bucks on the next one.
