Fire and Blood by George R.R. Martin & Doug Wheatley Book Summary

The thrilling history of the Targaryens comes to life in this masterly work by the author of A Song of Ice and Fire, the inspiration for HBO’s Game of Thrones.

With all the fire and fury fans have come to expect from internationally bestselling author George R. R. Martin, this is the first volume of the definitive two-part history of the Targaryens in Westeros.

Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen—the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria—took up residence on Dragonstone. Fire and Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.

What really happened during the Dance of the Dragons? Why did it become so deadly to visit Valyria after the Doom? What is the origin of Daenerys’s three dragon eggs? These are but a few of the questions answered in this essential chronicle, as related by a learned maester of the Citadel and featuring more than eighty all-new black-and-white illustrations by artist Doug Wheatley. Readers have glimpsed small parts of this narrative in such volumes as The World of Ice & Fire, but now, for the first time, the full tapestry of Targaryen history is revealed.

With all the scope and grandeur of Gibbon’s The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Fire and Blood is the ultimate game of thrones, giving readers a whole new appreciation for the dynamic, often bloody, and always fascinating history of Westeros.

Fire and Blood. From the beginning til the end this book kept me entertained as only a prequel to the Game of Thornes could do. Reading it again to see what I missed the first reading.

GOT is the GOAT. Love GRRM books

Boring. Don’t waste your money or time. Book is boring. I stopped half way through to read the reviews and see if I was missing something. I wasn’t it’s just lame.

Dazed and Confused.. Too long and confusing. It was repetitive.

Loved!. Finished this in days, there are some differences from the hbo series but I really enjoyed reading and understanding the history of the targaryen dynasty!

Amazing. Way better than I expected it to be. Can’t wait for the second book!!!!!

The books better than the hbo series 🔥. Loved every minute of this book .1 of the best books of all time . I could not wait 2 years for HBO to release season 2 of house of dragons.I had to find out what was next .So worth it ,the book is better than the hbo series 🔥

A great addition to the series we’ve come to love so much!. A fantastic read. I loved every page.

Disappointing. There is no story or character development. It could have been interesting, but if I’m going to read an extended appendix it might as well be from LOTR.

AMAZING!!!!!!. I love game of thrones I have watched all of the movies and read all the books except this one.

Spicyyyyyy. Interesting on how the line started and respectively ended. I still want to know about the mysteries of old velyria and how it will play out in the future of GOT. Also the book reads like a history book that is not boring. Important to note for incoming readers.

700 pages of nonsense. I love Game of Thrones. This book took me nearly a year to finish. The first 100-150 pages are decent, about Aegon the Conquerer, and gives decent back story regarding things in the series. The rest is written like a giant run-on sentence with characters who don’t matter and have names so similar, that even if they did matter, you can’t keep them straight. I gave this two stars and I’m not mad that I read it, but this could have been much better.

I couldn’t put it down!. I read this book in 1 week and now I’m hooked.

Don’t bother reading. Mainly a re-packaging of what was already written in his “The World of Ice & Fire”. Very little original material.

Wishful thinking but…. I was hoping we’d get an official ending to GOT, and not the HBO version before any of the origin stories. 1.) Simply because reading origin stories just makes you want to go back and re-read, then watch the original again with the new information. IF the series is GOOD. Which needless to say, GOT is. That being said… I loved learning about the Dragon family and their original conquer. It’s odd how it doesn’t bother me when THEY marry brother to sister but when the Lannisters did it, it was weird. Here’s hoping Martin decides to write an origin story for the Starks, their north and the original story for The Wall. Someone told me once it was done by Ice Dragon, but I guess we’ll never know how true that is. The Wolves are just as magical, and interesting as The Dragons IMO. Wrapping it up, this is a MUST for any GOT fans!

If you read world of ice and fire, you can skip this. The book is a little too similar at times to world of ice and fire, but did flesh out the history.

Fire and Blood. Intriguing, but character development falls short of what I’ve come to expect from Martin. I would have rather read Winds of Winter.

Meh. Tries to create a Silmarillion-like mythos. Fails. Doesn’t even broach the days leading to Robert’s Rebellion. Only successfully points out that Targaryen’s are fickle, freakish, incestous weirdos-whose only real power comes from the fact that for a time, they have a bigger gun.

The endless history of…. No real dialogue. No color. Is this just the screenplay for the series? Like reading a (fake) history book. Sorry.

Fire and Blood.. Huge disappointment! This book reads like the book of Numbers in the Bible. Endless trail of names and mayhaps, unrelated rabbit holes. It is a maddening mess with only brief interludes of coherent consistent story line.

Great Read.. More of a history book than a novel but, was hard to put down once I got started.

The keys to the bloody Targaryen past in Westeros. A must read to understand the Targaryen traditions and give you the history of how Kings Landing originated

Waste of time. Doubt if George Martin contributed much. Just a chronology of what happened before game of thrones. Doesn’t even get up to start of thrones saga. No reason to care about any character in the book. Don’t bother

Long.... Very long and dry. A book presented more like a long list of characters than a story. Reminiscent of the part of the Bible with all the begats lol

Amazing. I don’t even read books and I can not put this one down.

Disappointed. Terrible book. I was expecting an action-packed thriller, instead I got a boring, fictional history of Westeros. Admittedly I only read 100 or so pages, but it was like reading the Old Testament.

Reads like an awful history book.. This book is terrible. How many names can you list per page. Tried reading this twice, just couldn’t stomach it

Targaryen History up until Aegon III. This book is great! A lot of information to take in. My only complaint is the ending kind of fell short for me.

Fire and Blood-but no MEAT. I LOVE the original series of books, but this seems a non-fleshed out history book. It just retells what happened. While you may get why people do what they do, it’s in a basic sense- not the fully realized and emoted way the original series paints landscapes of lives. It’s just kind of FLAT. You know who is flying which dragon where, and a very basic why - but not the feelings involved. Feels like he gave this to the fans because he had to give them SOMETHING.

True Telling. As a fan of the GoT series I absolutely love this book, I realize a lot of people don’t like this because it’s written more as a history book instead of going in detail with each character. But while it doesn’t go j to as much detail with each character it still tells the beginning of Targaryen rule wonderfully. It has lore, story, twists and turns everywhere. It gets you to feel love and hatred and sympathy for characters in such a small amount of time. If you want to learn more of the history of the history behind our favorite series this is definitely a must. If you’re not into history books so much maybe just sample it and buy it if you you like it, otherwise just wait for the next book/season to come out.

Great Book!. Great book about the early history of House Targaryen to the start of the reign of Aegon III.

Decent at best, unnecessarily detailed and boring at worst. The first half of this history is enjoyable and tells enjoyable storylines. Aegon the conquerors tale through the old king Jaeharys is quite enthralling. The remaining half gets lost in an endless cycle of succession wars and conflict, which is only made worse by the unfathomable amount of lesser lords and ladies that come and go throughout this era.

Horrible time waster. GRRM can’t finish the real saga he started, unlike true hall of fame fantasy writers like E Howard and Tolkien. He should step aside and let a professional like Sanderson finish it, GRRM just doesn’t want to admit he is a hack who can’t finish. His inability to write is threatening to destroy his legacy.

Hard to put down!. This is the first book I have read by George R.R. Martin & it was informative & descriptive. Very cool learning all of this through the eyes of a maester. Highly recommend!

Oof...this hurts.. If you’re already into the books AND you are ASoIaF completist, you’ll most likely find some joy in reading this book. If you’re just a book reader who is into the main series and not all the tertiary short stories and novellas, I suggest checking it out in a library or B&N before buying. It is dry. Very dry. “The World of Ice and Fire” is more interesting. Wish this was Winds, and I understand the mob of readers with pitchforks in their hands about yet another book that isn’t advancing the core story. The hate George gets about not publishing Winds on time is counterproductive; does he owe us the story? How would you like to see fans of your work turn on you? If you didn’t need to write another sentence again and could retire comfortably, you might consider giving the people who think you’re their puppet the finger. Best to keep the moaning to a low grumble.

Fire and Blood. Interesting but not the storytelling we’re used to. This not a novel - it’s a history book

Funnnny. This book without a doubt is fuuunnyyyy. I love MUSHROOM

Ghost writer?. I have my doubts that G,Martin wrote this, the style and character development is so different than GOT that it seems like an HBO ghost writer did this one. This book is like a bad DJ, who keeps nearing a climax but never hits it…

A Wonderful Chunk of World-Building for the GoT Universe. This made me realize that fictional histories may just be a new genre of books for me to fall in love with. Told from the point of view of a maester writing a history book, this tells the story of much of the Targaryen dynasty on Westeros, and flushes out more of GRRM’s world to a fascinating degree.

8/10. i love this book, the only thing i dislike is that you are not certain of the information given, wish the author could do a re make where we have facts

Amazing. I love his writing :’) so beautiful

Disappointing. This book is just a history lesson written from a narrative point of view and is the worst book in the franchise

Not a shining literary moment. Could not Finnish this book... So dry and uninspired, just the facts. Flat disappointing.

I could not put it down!. I loved this book from start to end! You do have to really pay attention and sometimes even mark some names or note them to keep everyone in order but you start to get the order of things after a couple of chapters. I love the interconnected layers of story and characters that the author builds and creates and I love the unpredictability of his books! It’s a great read and hope we get a Vol II as George RR Martín has said he would likely do. Hopefully!! Bc i loved this book and would love a part 2!

Decent. I’ve read all of sweet George’s books. He is so talented. But have to say, why let HBO tell your story before u can?!! FIRE AND BLOOD was decent but why not finish the SONG OF ICE AND FIRE first?!!

A fantasy that’s welcome ,hbo are you paying attention?. What’s there to say that hasn’t been said already. I just hope hbo does this “prequel” justice unlike the massacre that was the final season of g.o.t. , the Targaryen bloodline is fascinating and the clever politics that are displayed in martins writings hold a parallel to any modern societal family in power, wether that be politics, entertainment, economically powerful groups. I like millions of others ,I will cherish the fantasy world that Martin has created...a little of us can relate and even see characteristics of ourselves in every character. This is an excellent tale that breaks the monotony of our robotic society. I just wish I had a fantasy time machine to see it all unfold. Thank you George for giving me over a decade of enjoyment.

Just and endless list of names with gruwsome deaths. Nothing in this list sparks interest. Grrm is well known for finding intricate ways of getting rid of one’s competitors. In this book he forgot to build affection between the reader and the character to be killed before the stroke lands. Seems like an endless list of meaningless deaths.

Only for hardcore fans. This is a history book about the first Targaryen’s up until the end of the civil war that was their doom, the show “house of the dragon” is based on this book. If you want to know the truth of the show then read it, otherwise a waste of time. It’s written from the perspective of a maester writing a history book about the Targaryens. Which means it’s quite boring. They throw in enough sex and debauchery to keep people engaged but their is a serious lack or mystery or personality. It’s a history book remember. Dialogue is lacking and the endless names of lords and ladies is very boring. For hardcore fans like myself who prefer to read before watching shows it’s a great read. The civil war and tv show makes much more sense to me now. The redeeming quality: learning about the dragons of old and Aegon the conqueror. PS. After the civil war is over the book becomes useless but continues on for 100+ Pages

Lazy and useless. So if you’ve read the actual series then this book will make sense, character, landscape, and general tone wise. That is where the good ends. This book is lazy and unnecessary. It reads like a Wikipedia, simple, non commitment to character development, plot intrigue, nor particular social analysis. The plot is emotionally void and forgettable. Most the elements seem to be stolen straight from Russian and English royalty history and simply re worded and renamed. The challenge with a product like this is it is a clear cash grab and makes one wonder if the author ever really wrote the actual series or did he stumble across novels of someone else’s work and simply stole that too. As a popular line says: shame. Shame. Shame.

What happened?. I read all of the GOT books in rapid succession and was glued to them, fantastic books. This was a chaotic mess to read, just staggered to an open end, without any cliffhanger or end of thought, it just stops. Very disappointing.

Fun for GoT diehards but feels incomplete. Reads like a history text not a novel, as intended by author. The biblical “begats” are even more abundant than in the novels. Ends rather suddenly, not even in a “to be continued” sort of manner, it just stopped. A bit dissatisfied at that, but overall I enjoyed the read. Lots of Easter eggs for those paying attention, but the book is only for diehard GoT nerds (me), casual readers can safely skip.
