Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky Book Summary

Adrian Tchaikovsky's Arthur C. Clarke Award-winning novel Children of Time is the epic story of humanity's battle for survival on a terraformed planet.

Who will inherit this new Earth?

The last remnants of the human race left a dying Earth, desperate to find a new home among the stars. Following in the footsteps of their ancestors, they discover the greatest treasure of the past age—a world terraformed and prepared for human life.

But all is not right in this new Eden. In the long years since the planet was abandoned, the work of its architects has borne disastrous fruit. The planet is not waiting for them, pristine and unoccupied. New masters have turned it from a refuge into mankind's worst nightmare.

Now two civilizations are on a collision course, both testing the boundaries of what they will do to survive. As the fate of humanity hangs in the balance, who are the true heirs of this new Earth?

Incredible. Hands down one of the best books I’ve ever read. Few stories are so unique, original, and intriguing. Could not put it down.

This is a modern day masterpiece. This book is an incredible story through time and the relativity of age. There are few other modern sci-fi books that has lingered with me as long as this one has. I wish I could read this book for the first time again.

Absolutely fascinating and original!. This is a unique science fiction perspective that is masterfully written and challenges the reader to try to put it down. I found myself saying “just one more chapter”. This is the stuff of an instant classic.

Perfection. Loved it from start to finish.

A Great Tale. Imagine the roles were reversed and humans are the invading force over sentient beings that evolved BECAUSE of humans. How imagine the fear, the base level programming of humans, the attempt to save humanity and not knowing a thing about the other side. Imagine how evened a species must be to not only understand their creators, but use the very thing they created against them…to ultimately save them. This is a world-class story and clearly an award winner for a reason. Highly recommend this to anyone who loves sci fi, but has a keen interest in understanding what humans are all about.

Incredible. It’s a sci-fi dream written in a fantastic culminating form. If you are a scientist, do not miss this fictional masterpiece.

Masterpiece. Amazing read! Thought provoking and huge in scope and time, this book is on par with science fiction greats like Dune and The Foundation Trilogy.

A Grand Achievement. Quite simply the best sci-fi book I’ve read in 30 years. I’ve not added a book to my list of favorites in a decade but do so here. Outstanding in every single way.

Couldn’t put it down. The most imaginative story I have read in years.

Original. Excellent… Original thinking. As interesting as Asimov’s Foundation.

Unique and interesting read. I had no idea what to expect from this book but I found the concept fascinating. An excellent sci-fi novel that I would recommend to anybody interested in the genre

Outstanding Tale of the Clash of Two Cultures. This is one of the best science fiction novels I have ever read. No plot spoilers in this review, but the interwoven tale of the development of life on a terraformed world and its inevitable clash with humanity is simply breathtaking.

The smartest sci-fi book I’ve ever read (too smart for me) 😵🤯. Children of Time is a great book in the same way that Schindler’s List or 2001: A Space Odyssey are great movies. They’re no doubt classics, extremely well thought out, depicted in an almost visionary way, and unappreciated until they’re over and you think back on them; but throughout the experience they become often boring and hard to follow. Children of Time suffers from this same problem: great book, if you can get through it. And you really have to be paying attention in order to fully understand it (which I wasn’t). But I still respect, appreciate and recognize it for everything it does. As I said, it does get a little boring and hard to follow, I got kind of tired of learning about all the anatomy and culture of the ants and spiders, but I understood why it was necessary. Children of Time excels pretty much everywhere, but has an especially unique approach to contrast. It puts a heavy focus on evolution, specifically accelerated evolution as one of the storylines follows the indigenous species that have evolved through human uplifting hundreds of years ago (there’s a little more to it, but I’m keeping it basic here, I’m not joking when I say the story is complex), which is why all the anatomy and culture are so important. During which, its portrayal of non-human main characters is so good, you almost forget that they’re not human. At the opposite end of the spectrum, another storyline has you following the few humans remaining in the galaxy as they begin to descend into barbarism out of desperation to survive while searching for a new home planet (again, there’s a little more to it). I love the multiple storylines and how they ultimately converge, the concept of human meddling and mortality, and the sense of what it means to be left behind in the grand scheme. With the sheer complexity of its story, the themes it tackles, and the uniqueness in which it does it, Children of Time is highly ambitious and epic in its scope and time-scale. Definitely check it out if your up for some heavy reading.

Brilliant and Engaging. Masterfully built allegory that engages and challenges the reader. Not since lord of the flies have I read as poignant of a story related to current times.

Humans bad, spiders good.. That about sums it up. The ending was pretty much signaled some chapters before the end. Much more ‘character development’ of insects and spiders than the humans who seemed like caricatures.

Wow.. Incredible book, unlike anything I’ve read before.

Phenomenal story. I will avoid all manner of spoilers and simply say that this book is the optimistic counter-response to the dark forest explanation of the Fermi paradox. A fantastic journey that manages to not only tread new science fiction ground, but also engage in deeply interesting world building. I highly recommend all read this.

Webs. Give it time and you’ll soon realize it’s a book about what you think it’s about. You might put it down and think about reading something else. I promise you though this is a book about a lot more than creepy crawlers and has some really really fun things to think about and a few interestingly constructed comments on humanity. I absolutely loved this book.

Amazingly Different. Not what I expected - in a good way. The same tropes you see in most science fiction novels were not here. original. fantastic.

Absolutely Amazing!!!. Such an imaginative, incredibly descriptive, wonderful piece of science fiction artwork! Can’t wait to read the next book in the series!! Loved it.

An interesting read.. A good read. A bit far fetched but hey that’s science fiction!

Good Read. I loved how different this book is. It really opened my mind on evolution and other cultures/societies.

Too slow, too far-fetched. The spider chapters stop the action in its tracks. The spider technology is ridiculous and too far fetched. The deus ex machina resolution at the end makes it all more infuriating.

Unique perspective. Though I thought the story slow to start, it was very rewarding in the end. The solution to conflict between two extremely different life forms was interesting.

Fast read!. Although the premise of intelligent space-traveling spiders is bizarre, he makes it work with tight narrative that kept me turning pages in order to finish this in one day. Good fast read!

Easily worth $50. I was left crying at the end of this book, it’s so good. I won’t bore you with details, I want you to experience it yourself. Suffice to say I cried when I finished it, the ending was so impactful.
