I Owe You One by Sophie Kinsella Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A gem of a novel.”—Jodi Picoult, #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Spark of Light and Small Great Things

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Party Crasher and Love Your Life comes an irresistible story of love and empowerment about a young woman with a complicated family, a handsome man who might be “the one,” and an IOU that changes everything.

Fixie Farr has always lived by her father’s motto: “Family first.” And since her dad passed away, leaving his charming housewares store in the hands of his wife and children, Fixie spends all her time picking up the slack from her siblings instead of striking out on her own. The way Fixie sees it, if she doesn’t take care of her father’s legacy, who will?

It’s simply not in Fixie’s nature to say no to people. So when a handsome stranger in a coffee shop asks her to watch his laptop for a moment, she not only agrees—she ends up saving it from certain disaster. To thank Fixie for her quick thinking, the computer’s owner, Sebastian, an investment manager, scribbles an IOU on a coffee sleeve and attaches his business card. Fixie laughs it off—she’d never actually claim an IOU from a stranger. Would she?

But then Fixie’s childhood crush, Ryan, comes back into her life, and his lack of a profession pushes all of Fixie’s buttons. As always, she wants nothing for herself—but she’d love Seb to give Ryan a job. No sooner has Seb agreed than the tables are turned once more and a new series of IOUs between Seb and Fixie—from small favors to life-changing moments—ensues. Soon Fixie, Ms. Fixit for everyone else, is torn between her family and the life she really wants. Does she have the courage to take a stand? Will she finally grab the life, and love, she really wants?

Praise for I Owe You One

“This book is a shot of pure joy!”—Jenny Colgan, author of The Bookshop on the Corner

“A humorous exploration of family life, finding love and the difficulties of coming into one’s own as a young professional woman . . . The entertaining cast of characters . . . will certainly remind readers why nineteen years after her first hit Kinsella remains one of the reigning queens of women’s fiction.”—The Washington Post

“I Owe You One is another impossibly delightful story by Sophie Kinsella, a must-read for her die-hard fans and new readers alike.”—PopSugar

Unnerving “heroine”. Have generally loved Sophie Kinsella so couldn’t wait for this book to be released. That said, this a great story altogether but it got to a point I found Fixie to be unnerving and just wanted to finish reading the book knowing everything would be alright in the end

Fun Read. Loved this book! I couldn’t put it down!!!

Fun to read. Fun, and entertaining. But it wrapped up to quickly. A few more pages wouldn’t have hurt. Did Ryan get the money? How is Nicole in AD, I mean 400+ pages and it ends in a blink. After agonizing pages of Fixie fear and anxiousness.

Loved it. One of the best books I’ve read in a while. I honestly could not stop reading. I laughed and cried through the book.

A little creepy. Ok for me it was a creepy. I have lost my dad. Older brother and sister very much like the two in the book! So for me I found it funny and a little to close to the best at times. I wish I could be ninja nece! Thank you for sharing your story with us.

Loved!!. Absolutely loved this book!

Cute. I have read every book and look forward to her new releases. This book missed the humor her characters usually display. I like it when she puts more humor in her books.

If I could go back in time. I would tell myself not to waste my time reading this book Loved can you keep a secret and I‘be got your number by Sophie Kinsella but this book is not in the same category Although the idea of an iou is good, There’s very little interaction between the protagonists.

Cute Story. I Owe You was a bit hard to get through in the beginning. It was whiny, slow, and a little boring. But it did get better in the second half. Kinsella has a way of making you relate to her protagonist even if you’re not really enjoying the plot. It wasn’t a masterpiece by any stretch of the word but it was a decent read; I enjoyed it.

I Owe You One. Unexpectedly charming. A fun, light read.

Cute quick read of a family’s differences. Three siblings who have been thrust together to run their parents local store after their father passes away and their mother has her own health scare. Mom leaves the country to travel entrusting the store and its success to her children who have many differences with one another and only one of whom is invested in the store and has experience of working there. The youngest of the 3, feels inferior in her older siblings shadows. Her sister is married and self absorbed and her brother is the golden child and is said to run multimillion dollar-companies and is in process of receiving his MBA. When they all come together, the truth of all of their lives comes forward and things aren’t as they have seemed to be. The climax of the story is watching the younger sibling come into her own and discover who she truly is versus who her family thinks she is. Her self discovery leads to a strong woman who no longer allows others to take advantage of her meek demeanor and kindness. Overall was a fun, easy to read book with typical characters and one brilliant and witty main character.

Nice story! Good weekend read!. Very fun and enjoyable book! It will leave you with a smile.

No. I’ve read all of SK’s books and adored them. But this one was hard to get through. The main character acts and thinks like a 14 year old. Her decisions and inner thoughts were absolutely cringeworthy until the very end of the book, and painful even then. None of the characters are likeable. Everyone is selfish and horrible to each other. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

Enjoyable, as always. Started slowly but, as always, it was still very pleasurable. I recommend the book as I do with all of this author’s work.

Awful. Characters, plot, conversations... all terrible. Wish I could get my money back.

Great. As always, 100 percent entertainment

I owe you one. This is an okay book. Definitely not one of my favorite Sophia books. If you need a ‘happily ever after’ this could be good for you. It was way too predictable for me.

Amazing book!!!!!. Fixie lives up to her name, always fixing things. The story begins when Fixie saves a strangers laptop. The stranger, Seb, writes Fixie an I Owe You on a coffee sleeve. Fixie has no intention of calling in the I Owe You but her feelings change as the story progresses. I truly loved this story. Fixie begins the story as a timid, mind in the past, putting everyone before herself girl. I enjoyed watching her grow through the story. The book is a light hearted, funny book and fits in very well with Sophie Kinsella’s book. I highly recommend this book!!!
