The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware Book Summary

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“A superb suspense writer…Brava, Ruth Ware. I daresay even Henry James would be impressed.” —Maureen Corrigan, author of So We Read On

“This appropriately twisty Turn of the Screw update finds the Woman in Cabin 10 author in her most menacing mode, unfurling a shocking saga of murder and deception.” —Entertainment Weekly

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Lying Game and The Death of Mrs. Westaway comes this thrilling novel that explores the dark side of technology.

When she stumbles across the ad, she’s looking for something else completely. But it seems like too good an opportunity to miss—a live-in nannying post, with a staggeringly generous salary. And when Rowan Caine arrives at Heatherbrae House, she is smitten—by the luxurious “smart” home fitted out with all modern conveniences, by the beautiful Scottish Highlands, and by this picture-perfect family.

What she doesn’t know is that she’s stepping into a nightmare—one that will end with a child dead and herself in prison awaiting trial for murder.

Writing to her lawyer from prison, she struggles to explain the events that led to her incarceration. It wasn’t just the constant surveillance from the home’s cameras, or the malfunctioning technology that woke the household with booming music, or turned the lights off at the worst possible time. It wasn’t just the girls, who turned out to be a far cry from the immaculately behaved model children she met at her interview. It wasn’t even the way she was left alone for weeks at a time, with no adults around apart from the enigmatic handyman.

It was everything.

She knows she’s made mistakes. She admits that she lied to obtain the post, and that her behavior toward the children wasn’t always ideal. She’s not innocent, by any means. But, she maintains, she’s not guilty—at least not of murder—but somebody is.

Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Ware’s signature suspenseful style, The Turn of the Key is an unputdownable thriller from the Agatha Christie of our time.

Turn of the key. Ending was very anticlimactic. Would not recommend this book.

The Turn of the Key. SPOILER ALERT! Bummer ending. unbelievable conclusion. 8 year old and 5 year old? Not realistic.

So Many Twists. I really enjoyed this novel. However, there were so many twists that by the time the most significant twists were revealed, I had already suspended my sense of reality. Nevertheless, I truly enjoyed this book.

Fantastic. Couldn’t put this one down. A wonderful conflation of old fashioned ghost story, dysfunctional family, laced with a “wired” old Scottish estate. Marvelous plotting through all the twists and turns.

The turn of the key. Good read

Great!. Awesome read

Almost a 5 star, but.... Let me start by saying that I did end up liking this book more than I initially thought I might. I generally love most of Ruth Ware’s books. This one definitely had a couple of twists, but some of it was not surprising. I will say though, that I agree with the reviewer that mentioned the kids’ ages. Kids can obviously be incredibly intelligent, but some of the things that occurred are not believable for a 5 & 8 year old...at all. My only other complaint (like many others’) was that the ending—wow factor though it was—was WAY too abrupt, and almost all of the characters had zero resolution. If the author’s goal was to keep you guessing what happened to everyone afterwards, she definitely accomplished that much. Pretty good though.

The Turn Of The Key. I was waiting for this book. I have read other books by a Ruth Ware, and never disappointed. Read it in one day, moves fast loved the twist.

Keeps your attention - great narrator. Really catching read I couldn’t stop listening to. It does keep you guessing until the end.. the narrator was exceptional. Highly recommend.

Disappointing. I have read all of her books and, in general, love her work. This one starts out well and the build of suspense was nice but it really went no where and wrapped up quickly ( too quickly ) and I felt very let down after quite a nice beginning. Bummer. It made me feel like I wasted my time on this one. What it reminded me of is when a band performs really well and sells a lot of records but their follow up or “sophomore” recording can’t possibly live up to the hype of the first few hits on the original album. All of the books before were outstanding, particularly “ In a Dark Dark Wood” and “The Woman In Cabin 10” ( these books are ridiculously good from start to finish ) but this time, my girl really let me down ☠️

Soooo clever!. What a good book! I snuck it in at work to finish it, couldn't put it down. Ruth Ware has gotten better with each novel she writes. I anticipate the next read from her.

Super Creepy Good!. Nothing like being “trapped” with a new nanny in a remote house with too many remote features... difficult children and tales of past horrors. Good creepy fun!

The end is too obscure. I liked the intrigue and it’s unfolding. Definitely a page turner, but after all these sensational and unexpected turns of the plot, passing in a rather fast pace, you just bump into a dead end...just a few words - and that’s a finale ? As if the writer lost any interest in the book or didn’t know what to write, got short of words...anyway, notwithstanding of my disappointment of the Book’s ending, I recommend it for reading.

The Ending. The last few paragraphs of this book were EVERYTHING. Jaw-dropper, absolutely puzzling! Read this book!

No real resolution. This was my first book by this author. I’m disappointed because she did not provide a real resolution.

Great writing, flawed plot device. I love Ruth Ware. Her writing is hypnotic, and this book captured my interest immediately. However, the ending utilizes surprises that are too convenient, and attribute unbelievable cunning on the part of one character. Still, it’s a good read although frustrating to discover that even this fine author isn’t above using shopworn tricks.

Not so sure. Interesting story, but the ending disappointed me and left me unsatisfied.

Formula babysitter scare. I rarely leave reviews, but this was just such a tired, overused plot with so many holes. The narrative was carelessly threaded together with supposed “letters” that went nowhere. I felt obligated to finish it because I paid for it. Never again. My time is worth something. Might be ok if you’re snowed in or camping or something.

Ending not expected. The beginning seemed slow to me but once it picked up I couldn’t put it down. I did not expect the ending at all! Kind of wish there was a second book..

WoW!!!. Loved it! Beginning to end!

Disappointing. As a fan of Ruth Ware’s work, I was very disappointed in this book. There are so many loose ends, nothing is explained, and the ending is so weak. Not her best at all.

Questions at the back of the book. Spoiler Alert…. “First, that Rachel never sent her pleas for help and second, that the truth they reveal no longer matters. Discuss why the letters never posted and what happened to Rachel in those two years.” Seriously? The author drug out the story for that long, and now the reader has to determine the ending? WTH. Ugh.

amazing. I read this for a book project for my literature class. Outstanding writing and a very gripping plot. I do love books that have plot twists at the end, where everything is revealed and makes sense. Ware executes this perfectly. Would recommend to others, probably one of Ware’s best books.

Disappointed jjjjjj. The book started out interesting. However, lots of twist and turns that lead no where!!! I love surprise endings but this is a very weird and unfinished ending. I’ve read some other of this authors books and have enjoyed. Just not this one.

Unexpected outcome. Kept me wanting to read even when I was ready to sleep. Twisted plot. Somewhat expected, then completely unexpected. Keeps you guessing.

SO good!. This book was so hard to put down!

Wow so good!. I love Ruth Ware’s books but I have to say this is one of my favorites! I couldn’t put it down & I’m still thinking about the ending... wow so good!!!

Crazy. It was a quick read. Not as interesting as some of the other books. A good author but something’s always missing from her stories...

Disappointing ending. I have read all of Ruth Ware’a books and this one has me interested all the way through but the ending fell flat.

Good but not great. The story telling was good. I could really visualize the scenes and feel the anxiety, panic and growing hysteria of the main character. Some events were predictable though. I also just felt like the ending deserved more. It felt like a short fireworks show...a couple big hits and then it was over. I read it quickly though and didn’t get bored. It’s a good short travel read.

Nice Read. Wow— I thought I had figured out the plot, but with all the twists and turns— I wasn’t expecting that 😉

A story full of suspense!. I could not put this book down! What a series of twists and turns and a very surprising ending.

The Turn of the Key. Slow to start but Oh! The ending.

Keeps you guessing right to the end!. Great story that perfectly reveals the characters secrets and motives creating a disbelief and leaves an impression upon you regarding the truth of each persons motives and mindsets.

So many twists!. So many twists! You will literally not figure it out until the very last page - DO NOT skip ahead, it’s worth it- trust me.

Mystery Thriller Suspense Fiction. The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware is a Suspense Mystery Thriller that has scary and creepy plot twists to the very last pages. I have read every book Ruth Ware has written and enjoyed each one. In this book the characters are intriguing but all seem to have very disturbing personality traits and values. The smart house blended with a Victorian house was an interesting addition since both added to the creepiness of the story. I enjoyed this book except for the ending. There was no real resolution of what happened to the characters except for one person. To the very last pages I would have given this book 5 Stars but because of what I felt was an unresolved ending I will give it 4 Stars.

Disappointing. Ruth Ware can put sentences together well. But, after a big build up, the ending was a let down.

Seriously would not recommend!. I really liked the beginning and loved the character development; however, the end was literally crap! Would NOT recommend this book to anyone!

Amazing. Such a great read! I recommend it to anyone that loves thrillers!

Worth reading. I will start by saying that this was not my favorite Ruth Ware book. However, I wonder if I’d have liked it more had I not been anticipating it like I was. It was good, again worth reading. I just don’t feel that, in comparison, it was as good as I’d expected. I will still look forward to everything she writes and consider her one of the best authors in her genre.

Twists and Turns. Incredible novel. The twists and turns had me on edge from the beginning to the end. Rowans character had me filled with anxiety as I was trying to figure out what she would do next. Great read and a big thank you to Ruth Ware for writing such a great book!

Quick beach read. Finished in two days and while it was engaging, the ending was unsatisfying (to me at least - but maybe that’s a nod to the source material)! Decent overall
