Reviews

‘The German Midwife is a book to harrow the soul and linger long in the mind. Anke, a German midwife sent to a labor camp for aiding Jewish mothers against Third Reich law, is whisked from hell-scape to eerie luxury when she is brought to Hitler's private mountain estate to care for his pregnant mistress Eva Braun. Mandy Robotham writes movingly of the eternal human struggle to preserve reverence for life in the midst of genocide and horror. A powerful, haunting debut.’ Kate Quinn

Well worth readin. This debut novel was riveting. The author created characters of depth as well as a daunting emotional landscape that made this reader think about the story and the people long after I finished reading the book. As a historical work of fiction, it held fast to the events that took place in Germany and the horror of the times, but never lost sight of an individual's choice to act with love and humanity in the face of evil.

The German Midwife. I’ve been reading 1st hand accounts of people who lived through the holocaust for several years. Their stories of their experiences are truly inspiring to me. This book was a little different with some fiction thrown into. But the birthing aspects seemed very believable to me. I too assisted women with childbirth for over thirty years. I can tell when these stories are authentic or not. Some of the things Anke talked about seemed a little advanced for the time, but believable.

Amazing and beautifully written. Uplifting and sad and so beautiful. Excellent, excellent book.

Feels like you’re in WWII. As a nurse, I loved the medical jargon and the descriptions of birth from the perspective of a midwife. If you are a fan of Call the Midwife at all, you will like this book too. As a mother, some of the stories broke my heart and were extremely emotional. As a lover of WWII stories, this was everything I wanted it to be. The emotion and writing so raw I could almost imagine the author was indeed there.

German midwife. Excellent read!!

The German Midwife. This was a beautifully written book that I greatly enjoyed reading. I skipped some of the flashbacks - they were much less interesting than the main story line. The main character was a strong, brave, and resilient young woman, who lived through unimaginable times. The SS officer story seemed implausible though, as it seemed unlikely he would risk his life for a newborn, but he was in love and had strong morals and values despite his affiliation. The naivety of Eva also seemed unlikely, and the descriptions of the evil monster and his evil henchmen were too flattering.

Loved this book. Loved it cover to cover such exquisite writing and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.

The German Midwife. I could not stop reading! Absolutely wonderful, gripping novel. Don't start this book in the evening...you will get no sleep!

Spellbinding…. After reading The Berlin Girl (another excellent book by this author), naturally, I had to read this one. It tugged on my heartstrings as a mother, as someone who wanted to be a midwife, and as someone’s who’s past is thick in Germany’s history.

The German Midwife. Excellent representation of Nazi control. Surprisingly captive and suspenseful while sad and haunting overall a 9 1/2 in my opinion

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. The first chapter will draw you in while simultaneously crushing your soul. But it is such a good read. Highly recommend.

Rating. This was a good book for the most part, but I found the ending to be quite disappointing

Amazing read!. I could not put this one down. Settled on the couch for a weekend and was enthralled in the story, beautifully written and the characters are so well laid out. Can’t wait for more from the author!
