Great book!. This was the first book I’ve read in a long while that actually lived up to my expectations. Great world building, fantastic main characters-loved the alternating POV. Some of Lou’s lines made me laugh out loud! Great romance...with a nice little surprise sex scene that was hot hot hot (I thought this was a YA book). Pleasantly surprised and can’t wait for the next one!

it was great. I absolutely LOVED this book, it was the book that got me back into reading.

Amazing. This is one of my new favorites. I love the dimension of the characters, the detailed scenery that made it so easy to picture in my mind, and the interesting take on the witch/religious worlds. Let me just say, Lou might be the literary love of my life. Amazing story that I will probably read many times. Can not wait for the story to continue!

Couldn’t put it down!. Could not put it down! I can be something of a snob when it comes to YA novels because I truly love the genre, but this book exceeded expectations. Literally finished this thing in a day, and I’m already anxious for the second book.

AMAZING. I was completely drawn in from the start. Great debut book😌❤️

Engaging magic system, weak world building. The magic systems in this book were intriguing, but the world building and character development were weak. The characters seemed lost in time, with frequent dialogue that seemed out of place. Clothing, technology, and even food were noticeably anachronistic. The love story was fine, but not particularly special. Basically, it was Average YA-level writing with an arbitrary sex scene thrown in.

Meh. Saw it on tik tok had high hopes but the plot wasn’t very interesting and the love story develops a bit to fast without any real moments between the two characters, it’s just like oh suddenly they are like each other even though nothing has changed besides them being married.

My New Favorite Book!. I usually never give reviews on books because i never read them and always get bored, but this book was amazing. I could not stop reading it. The only thing i did not likr was when Lou sang Big Titry Liddy. Besides this read it or else!

Awkward. The first 3/4 of this book are slow and uncomfortable. The last quarter is fast paced and exciting, but doesn’t quite make up for the weird character dynamics for me. I will say, the plot is not thin: the author ties the subplots together in an interesting way that comes together near the end of the book. But the relationships between characters IS thin, and unbelievable. The tension doesn’t build, it’s just suddenly there, and two characters who hate each other are suddenly “in love”. The writing is well done, but as a love story, this does not cut it for me.

Amazing. Just buy it. It’s amazing

Disappointed. I chose to buy this book based on the positive reviews here and was sadly surprised when I disagreed with them shortly after beginning the book. This book is bland, the writing too simple. The author gives us crumbs of amazing, horrific abilities that the witches have, mere sprinkles of history mixed in with boring paragraphs of the main character being “sassy”. I wanted to like it so badly and am trying to force myself to finish it just to see how the romance turns out. The story has so much potential, I wish the author had really set the stage by giving us more history and insight to the really cool magic in the book. What the witches seem capable of is truly creative and horrific, but sadly the main focus is the “enemies to lovers” trope.

One of the best!!. This is such a great book, can’t wait for a second one!

Never expected this.. I haven’t read a book that I’ve loved this much this all of Sarah J. Maas’ books. The characters had depth, the writing style was fantastic, the world was immersive. I didn’t expect this, though. A lot of young adult books like this nowadays are plain and bland and the writing is repetitive. The last book I read repeated “a chill that has nothing to do with the cold and everything to do with blah blah blah” was said like every chapter. The romance scenes weren’t necessarily romantic until the very end but you still sensed a change throughout the book. Very very well done.

Meh. Not that good, had to trudge through. The characters are very one dimensional and the romance seems disingenuous.

Far better than expected. I devoured this book in less than 24 hours. Characters are great and the plot is unique, interesting, and attention grabbing.

Why is this being hated on?. This book was pretty good I thought. Everyone tells me that this being isn’t worth it. That Reid is aggravating (I agree) and that Lou is stupid. I thought that it was pretty good. Yes. Reid was a little annoying and at some points he really made me want to scream and slap him but I enjoyed the story.

Serpent & Dove - 3.5 Stars. Serpent & Dove Review – 3.5 stars / 1 spicy rating Lou is a witch who left her coven to escape her destiny and lives in fear of being found every day. She squats with her best friend, Coco, in the attic of a playhouse. Lou and Coco are witches in hiding from the church and its Chasseurs in addition to Lou hiding from her mother. The book starts with Lou and Coco and the help of Bas breaking and entering into a townhouse to retrieve a magical ring that will help protect Lou. While there the church is alerted that a witch is there and the Chasseurs show up making their escape nearly impossible. After escaping Lou and Coco must go separate ways for them to both be safe. The very next day Lou runs into one of the Chasseurs and ends up in an arranged marriage to him which will offer her unexpected protection. After quickly completing the marriage ceremony and moving into Cathédral Saint-Cécile d’Cesarine Lou must learn about her new husband, find a way to safely practice magic to protect herself, and learn to live life in the church married to a Chasseur. After getting herself into some trouble Lou must deal with being babysat by Ansel when Reid isn’t around. During the first day of being babysat by Ansel she manages to get into the infirmary and finds someone she least expected there Coco! This gives her the opportunity to practice strengthening her magic without raising suspicion. As Lou and Reid learn to manage their differences and learn what it means to be husband and wife to each other they become enemies to lovers. While Lou decides to give into her feelings she is still reluctant to share who/what she is with Reid. After an unexpected turn of events where a band of witches attack the church led by Lou’s mother she must reveal to Reid who/what she is. This results in a fight where Lou leaves the church and gets captured by her mother and returns to Chateau le Blanc. Reid must make a choice to go after Lou and save her from her fate resulting in going against everything he stands for or continuing his path with the church. Ultimately he makes the right decision and sets out with Coco, Ansel, Beau, and Madame Labelle to save Lou.

A magical, addictive read!. Just fabulous! A magical, addictive read! I loved the premise, the characters, the whole thing! A great different spin on witches! Lou is hysterical.. love the Romance, the little touches of history. This was great from start to finish!!! I hate that I have to wait a year for the next book! This great new author is now on my favs list!!!

good but not great. this book was fun! it had lots of great things in it and there were parts where i really enjoyed the romance. however, i agree with some of the other reviewers—the romance does seem rushed in parts or even forced. the magic system could be developed more, and some of the characters could use some more development, too. i really liked lou (the main character). she had some pretty funny lines. if you’re looking for a series that’s fun and you want to enjoy more casually, go for this! like i said, i enjoyed the series, but i wouldn’t say it’s my favorite. it could use more development. i just wanted to be more sucked into this world.

Must read ❤️. I can’t put into words how good this book is. So surprisingly good, I regret putting it lower and lower down my reading list for months!! It’s a MUST READ. I’m so happy there’s still 2 books left to devour 😌

Incredible!!!. The book itself is well written, the storyline a complex whirlwind of an adventure. The reader becomes instantly hooked with the character's personality as well as the complete contrast between the main love interest, Reid and Lou. The character development is heart warming as the reader becomes personally attached and feels connected to every one of them (especially Ansel). Readers of Sarah J Maas, Holly Black and Cassandra Clare will adore this series.
