The Institute by Stephen King Book Summary

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Stephen King whose “storytelling transcends genre” (Newsday) comes “another winner: creepy and touching and horrifyingly believable” (The Boston Globe) about a group of kids confronting evil.

In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis’s parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there’s no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents—telekinesis and telepathy—who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and ten-year-old Avery Dixon. They are all in Front Half. Others, Luke learns, graduated to Back Half, “like the roach motel,” Kalisha says. “You check in, but you don’t check out.”

In this most sinister of institutions, the director, Mrs. Sigsby, and her staff are ruthlessly dedicated to extracting from these children the force of their extranormal gifts. There are no scruples here. If you go along, you get tokens for the vending machines. If you don’t, punishment is brutal. As each new victim disappears to Back Half, Luke becomes more and more desperate to get out and get help. But no one has ever escaped from the Institute.

As psychically terrifying as Firestarter, and with the spectacular kid power of It, The Institute is “first-rate entertainment that has something important to say. We all need to listen” (The Washington Post).

Great!!. Awesome book, couldn’t put it down—

King. 5 stars.

Exceptional. This is my first Stephen King book I have read and oh boy will it not be my last. I’ve never read a book with such tasteful writing and concise plot lines with complete resolutions. I’m completely drawn back and am excited to drive into more of his works!

Perfection. This book was emotional but in the best ways. Literal perfection

Drawn out.. I felt that the character development was decent. Some aspects of the story were predictable while other aspects seemed far-fetched. Not worth the time spent overall.

Amazing read. King strikes again with the amazing suspenseful plot. could not stop reading. one of my favorites from King

Phenomenal. This is one of, if not the best book I’ve read in my life thus far!

LOVED IT!!. Couldn’t put it down. True Stephen King greatness!

Hated the whole ending. This was a good read all the way for me except for the ending. I wanted the ending to be like the written equivalent of a juicy cheese burger, a small bag of chips, a strawberry shake and my favorite candy for dessert. Instead I got a flat piece of plain white toast. (People in small towns are not nice, they’re mean. They know what they are going to do to newcomers as soon as they see them. They come to it quick. Like a middle school Algebra 1 equation solve for X and heaven help the homeless or a drifter. I would have liked to have seen more of that in the story also to draw me into the fantasy of it more. Great writing though for sure, enjoy it.)

Must read. Great book, I really enjoyed it!

Lazy writing, outdated dialog.. The story is flimsy and recycled, filled with gaping plot holes, and stars a genius who never does anything genius. The kids’ dialog and pop culture references are decades out of date, and anything computer-related is so unrealistic that it’s silly.

I forgot how suspenseful King’s books can be. I was at his mercy throughout this novel, and loved every page. I didn’t want to walk the dog, I just wanted to read.

Couldn’t put down. This is the first Stephen King book I’ve read and I wasn’t disappointed. By the time I got to chapter 2 I was immersed. (The book is in chapters with subchapters) I liked how it was written with flashbacks and parallel story lines. Kept my mind working & trying to figure out how it was going to go! It was a great read.

Awesome read, I couldn’t put it down.. See subject line 😊👍👍👍

Amazing. I’m 20 years old and I probably haven’t picked up a pleasure book since middle school. I used to be such an avid reader and missed that good book feeling. This novel relit the flames for my passion for reading and I’m already on to the next. I just wanted to say thank you to the author and to anyone reading this review, I’d probably give you one of those “love it, or your money back guaranteed” type deals if I could!

Great read!. I hope it turns in a movie! Sinister plot!

Outstanding. Probably my favorite of all the Stephen King books I’ve read so far. If you haven’t given it a chance yet, do so.

Gripping. That’s the word that I’d use to describe this book. The beginning is slow (as is with any good story) but once you get to know the characters it’s very easy to get into and the story keeps a hold of you. Definitely worth investing the time into.

The Institute. Excellent book, multiple outlooks that all come crashing together. Would highly recommend.

He did it again. To be honest it took several attempts to start reading the novel. Not sure why it didn’t take because I thoroughly enjoy Stephen King books. However once I did get into to, I couldn’t stop reading. At work or when out with friends, all I could think of was “ when can I get home to continue reading?”

Gripping page-turner. It’s been probably 15 years since I’ve read a Steven King book, and this is the first I’ve read in his far-spanning catalog that isn’t considered a classic—but I’ve no doubt it will one day be looked upon as a classic.

One of the best books I’ve read in a while. Could not put it down. You’ll fall in love with these characters. Such a good book!!

Book written for illiterate orphans. Sad attempt at a conspiracy story. World building showed initial progress that was wasted by flat and inconsistent characters. The plot plays out like an elementary schooler’s wish fulfillment revenge fantasy. I read this book to finally read a book by Steven King, and regretted every moment of it.

Good story. I’ve been an avid SK reader since Carrie when I was in elementary school. Although his stories never bore or disappoint me, I’m disappointed in SK himself for the numerous jabs at Trump and conservatives in general. I mean, I get it. He’s a liberal. But I read to escape the world for a bit, not be immersed in politics. Get over it!

Great. Great book, could not put it down.

The institute. Not as good as The Stand or Salem’s Lot but still a good book.

Great book. This book kept me on edge wanting to read all day and night long. I would definitely recommend this book.

Builds and builds and builds and blows your mind.. Great book. Another classic of building a story/characters that unravels before you. Always struggle with how long his books are but this one is worth to read till the end!

Meaningful Plot w/ Passionate Characters. This book did not fail to deliver a wonderfully immersive story. I felt the motivation and passion that the characters felt. The story was a great combination of fiction and fact leaving the reader to wonder if this truly could be.

Great read!. I enjoyed this book. Real page turner. Highly recommended.

Awesome Read. This book was phenomenal extremely difficult to put down. I highly recommend this book! I look forward to revisiting this one in the future.

Phenomenon-al!. Excellent read, could not put this one down until finished.

Good read. Just what you’ve come to expect from Stephen King…a great story, interesting characters and snarky liberal jabs that add nothing to the plot.

Great read. Excellent read, kept me going throughout!!!

Politics. Leave your petty immature political jabs out of it

Politics. Huge fan of SK over the years but his politics are ruining his work. Just the scares please!

Amazing. Very well written. Couldn’t put it down. Read it in a week.

2 thumbs up. Shockingly great, the best book I’ve ever read

Decent but not the best. I kept waiting and waiting for the story to get better… I felt like it was a tad predictable and during and after climax I didn’t feel like I even needed to finish the story. The concept is interesting but execution could have been better. Left me feeling meh.

Pure King. 5 Stars. When King writes kids, you can’t go wrong. This felt like all of his best always did. Characters you loved, characters you hated more. What a fantastic STORY. Luke seems like he might have a future story or two in him. Really all of the survivors. I wonder what might happen if Luke met Holly Gibney? Hmm. Stephen King being Stephen King. Absolutely incredible.

Finished in 2 days. Loved it! Relatable characters, in depth emotion.

Another amazing story by King. I’ve never been disappointed by Stephen King’s writing—his imagination sometimes gives me the creepy crawlies—but his writing is always excellent. I never want to put the story down until I’m finished. It’s watching a movie in my head. Scary, and hopefully the story won’t come true!

Great book. First king novel , couldn’t put it down.

Good. Good

Outstanding. I was immediately drawn into this book when I read it a few months ago. I have been slowly making my way through some of King’s more well-known novels when I kept seeing this one in stores. The storyline is well thought out and keeps you on your toes with good pacing. I enjoyed the characters and their relationships with one another, and it was full of twists that catch you off guard time and time again. I would definitely recommend this to someone.

Couldn’t put it down…. Wow! This book cost me sleep. But sleep I happily lost, a real page turner which I couldn’t put down. There are elements which happily reminded me of The Dark Tower series. I’d highly recommended The Institute to anyone & everyone!

The Institute. Great book. The adult responses to the situations and the villains were silly, though, and underwhelming for what they were guilty of.

Couldn’t put it down. This is a great read, scary and yet uplifting

Classic King. A brilliantly told story as only SK can tell it. Poignant, timely, and thought provoking...one of King’s best!

Outstanding. It was simply an amazing book. Got me on my toes worse than a perfect suspense movie. Highly recommend it.

Books!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!. ive exhausted my self reading rateings and no longer need to read the book! thats a grand saveings of 20.99$ thanks stef king! i can call him that because we are freinds!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Hooked. This book had me hooked from the beginning. I was turning pages faster than I had in a long time, however the second half of the book took a turn for me and the ending left me underwhelmed. Still, I was left thinking about this book for days after it had been returned to its rightful owner.

Love it. Excellent read! A real page turner, I couldn’t put this book down ! My bed time was drastically effected

Best Book Ever. Best book ever! King’s writing allows you to feel as if you personally know each character in real life. This is a book I will always remember.

Couldn’t put it down. King is a master of developing characters we love and ones we despise. This book doesn’t disappoint. You know from the beginning that characters Tim Jamieson and Luke Ellis are destined to cross paths but when they do, readers will be surprised what character ends up saving the day. This is a book all king fans will love.

Happy. Loved this book! Couldn’t put it down. Started it Sunday evening and finished it today!
