Vivir con una enfermedad terminal es como caminar sobre una cuerda floja sobre un abismo insensiblemente aterrador. Pero vivir sano también, sólo que con algo de niebla o nubes que cubren las profundidades de ese abismo.
Nina Riggs estuvo lidiando con un cáncer de mama agresivo durante casi un año, pasando por los procesos de quimioterapia, mastectomía y radiación. Pero una tarde, mientras ella y su esposo enseñaban a su hijo a andar en bicicleta, cayó y se rompió la columna.
Una resonancia magnética reveló un tumor sobre su columna vertebral: el cáncer se extendía como sobre sus huesos. Lo cual sugirió que tenía entre 18 y 36 meses de vida.
Inspirada en la frase de Montaigne "Quiero que la muerte me encuentre plantando mis coles, sin preocuparme por ello, menos aún, por un jardín inconcluso", la autora desafía la noción de "luchar" contra el cáncer, pues no busca "ganar" sino hacer lo que tiene que hacer: cuidar a su familia, comprar comestibles, manejar las finanzas, acudir a los tratamientos médicos, incluso escribir este libro.
Una crónica sobre la convivencia cotidiana entre la vida y la muerte.
