The Ride of a Lifetime by Robert Iger Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A memoir of leadership and success: The CEO of Disney shares the ideas and values he embraced while reinventing one of the world’s most beloved companies and inspiring the people who bring the magic to life.

AN NPR BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR

Robert Iger became CEO of The Walt Disney Company in 2005, during a difficult time. Competition was more intense than ever and technology was changing faster than at any time in the company’s history. His vision came down to three clear ideas: Recommit to the concept that quality matters, embrace technology instead of fighting it, and think bigger—think global—and turn Disney into a stronger brand in international markets.

Today, Disney is the largest, most admired media company in the world, counting Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and 21st Century Fox among its properties. Under Iger’s leadership, Disney’s value grew nearly five times what it was, making Iger one of the most innovating and successful CEOs of our era.

In The Ride of a Lifetime, Robert Iger shares the lessons he learned while running Disney and leading its 220,000-plus employees, and he explores the principles that are necessary for true leadership, including:

• Optimism. Even in the face of difficulty, an optimistic leader will find the path toward the best possible outcome and focus on that, rather than give in to pessimism and blaming.
• Courage. Leaders have to be willing to take risks and place big bets. Fear of failure destroys creativity.
• Decisiveness. All decisions, no matter how difficult, can be made on a timely basis. Indecisiveness is both wasteful and destructive to morale.
• Fairness. Treat people decently, with empathy, and be accessible to them.

This book is about the relentless curiosity that has driven Iger since the day he started as the lowliest studio grunt at ABC. It’s also about thoughtfulness and respect, and a decency-over-dollars approach that has become the bedrock of every project and partnership Iger pursues, from a deep friendship with Steve Jobs in his final years to an abiding love of the Star Wars mythology.

“The ideas in this book strike me as universal” Iger writes. “Not just to the aspiring CEOs of the world, but to anyone wanting to feel less fearful, more confidently themselves, as they navigate their professional and even personal lives.”

Amazing and Inspiring. So many examples of the feeling he had in relation to the decisions was confronted with and lessons he had beforehand that gave him the vision and courage to lead.

Wonderfully inspiring. Bob writes with day to day activities that anyone could be challenged with and gives very little direct advice. The readers can relate directly to the actions this great CEO and man take and apply directly to our own lives. Thank you Bob! I particularly relate to the ending of the book. Wonderful writing and story telling.

What’s South Park do I own that?. For cinema and entertainment mainly for adult audiences the Walt Disney company needs to be broken up before they take control of all industries through their endless buying out companies among other practices to avoid competition. Animated movies are cancer. They need to stop buying everything and ruining it with woke p.c. Disney makes terrible movies and tv shows with identity politics.

Great. Very nice reading!

Business in the front and back. What a ride it has been for Bob. I was hoping for more of the fuel that drove him and maybe even take some of it for myself. It felt less like one ride and more like several smaller rides.

Great leadership lessons told through memorable stories. Captivating, easy to read and contains valuable lessons that any leader or manager can benefit from.

Couldn’t put it down. This book is fantastic. Just buy it.

🙌🏻. It’s the kind of book that’s makes you keep reading all day

Amazing story. Great book

A great leader and human-being. I enjoyed reading about Robert’s career from his early days to becoming CEO of Walt Disney. And fascinated with his leadership style and how to takes care of his people. Highly recommend for anyone interested in Leadership and how to be successful in business.

Interesting career ride and advice. The majority of this book is very interesting and enjoyable to read. I especially enjoyed reading about Bob’s relationship with Steve Jobs. I rated this book three stars because the final chapters seemed rushed and are nothing more than deals and negotiations. I found them boring and it tainted my overall opinion of the book.

Loved this book. Great book, easy and insightful read and am amazing story about Bob’s life. It goes to show how and why Disney ran so well under his time. Feel it would be a good read for anyone wanting to have a business focused mind in their future or career

Fantastic book. Absolutely fantastic book. Learned a lot and this book made me pick up the habit of reading again

Amazing and inspirational. So great, clear and concise! Really great read.

Excellent. Truly wonderful story telling, and an even better depiction of the do’s and don’t’s of leadership!

Outstanding. One of the most inspirational books I’ve ever read.

Fascinating. Great and interesting behind the scenes look.

Good memoir, don’t read if you’re looking for career advice. I enjoyed this book and think Bob tells his story and the stories of his colleagues well. It is a memoir of his professional life more than a book on leadership. He gives a few pieces of practical advice that are highlighted at the end of the book such as “Find good talent, ...trust your instincts, etc.”. The rest of the book describes his jobs in the entertainment business in detail and throughly explains his leadership decisions to acquire Pixar and other giant companies. Overall it’s a great book I recommend to anyone interested in the entertainment industry.

encouraging story. what a wonderful story about leadership and an insight into the characteristics of a successful and decent executive

A true leadership memoir. Bob Iger’s leadership philosophy so closely matches what I aspire to — a relentless pursuit of perfection. In my Christian Leadership class my junior year of high school, we were urged to write mission statements. I wrote then and still abide by “pursuing excellence and challenging mediocrity.” This book encourages you to take risks and do just that. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Spectacular book!. This was one of the best memoirs I ever read. Bob was very candid about his experience as a CEO and his career before then which made for a very inspiring and informative book. I feel as if I have profound insight on the way he has been able to succeed all these years. Also loved learning about Steve Jobs from his perspective!

An easy, must read. If you’re a Disney fan, this book is an absolute must read and pairs quite nicely with The Imagineering Story, the documentary series that was released on Disney+. From his early days to the premier of Avengers: Endgame, what’s great about this book is how it covers nearly all the most recent Disney related events. It’s often frustrating reading biographers that are many years outdated as some of the challenges and questions within them have been publicly addressed and resolved. This book concludes at the end of 2019. But beyond the obvious Disney connection, what helps this book along is how approachable the writing is, making even all the multi-billion dollar business decisions that helped get Iger to where he is today an understandable affair. And if you’re fascinating by the world of corporate America and the challenges a CEO faces, there are lots of good lessons to be learned here. Can’t wait for Iger to write more.

The Ride of a Lifetime. Well written. I enjoyed reading this book.

Great Biography. I picked up this book because this is written by someone who ran Disney. Needless to say, this book contains valuable lessons about not only running a successful media company, but also becoming a good person with good abilities and right mindset in the business of competitions and partnerships.

Leadership with Care. He is the type of leader we should all have and/or be. Sticking to your core beliefs, trusting yourself and allowing others the same while continuing to create with vision are much biggest takeaways. I loved learning about Disney and the inter workings of a company that’s been around for so long.

More than a pleasant surprise. As a longtime Disney enthusiast I was aware of the journey the Walt Disney Company had taken following the death of Walt Disney, and how Disney ultimately found its way, but I did not have a comprehensive overview of that journey until I read this book and understood how Disney’s leaders managed it. Beyond this is Mr Iger’s own, very American story; starting at the bottom and working his way up, having his company acquired and then moving up from there, and eventually taking his new company to heights that no one could have previously imagined. Beyond the fact that its writing is honest and clear, what makes this a great read is that the person telling his story, Mr Iger, appears to be one those rare people of considerable ability who remains more aware and appreciative of what those around him have to offer. This allowed him to work for (and with) any number of out-sized but talented personalities (including Roone Arledge , Michael Eisner, Michael Ovitz, Steve Jobs, George Lucas and Rupert Murdock) and not only do well for himself and those trusting him, but come away from the encounter a better and more capable person.. The fact that someone as brilliant and difficult as Steve Jobs could grow to like and trust Robert Iger as a good friend is itself no small thing. The fact that Robert Iger managed to tell this story with empathy and a dose of humility, is nothing short of amazing. If you like reading about: large corporations thriving in a time of disruptive innovation, or all things Disney, or learning how to be a better leader, you are going to really like this book.

Solid!. Solid insight from a transformative leader.

Extremely entertaining reading. It’s not only an entertaining reading but also a good source of inspiration.

Extraordinary!. This book is truly inspirational and encourages people, who are interested in working for the entertainment industry, to work hard no matter what. Through his own experiences from starting from the bottom to the top, he shares the advice he’s received and shares it with the world. He’s the best CEO Disney has had in years since Roy and Walt Disney.

Generic, with some good stories. The overall book is solidly generic in its ‘leadership lessons’ (essentially - work hard, be a good person, etc). There are some interesting behind-the-scenes stories on the acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel, etc at least.

Beautifully written. Bob Iger takes you beautifully through his life and journey throughout the Walt Disney company. He keeps you engaged in his history and shows you ins and outs of the company. Definitely recommend

Excellent book, extremely engaging. I really enjoyed how Robert Iger wrote his book. He intertwined leadership lessons with story telling illustrating how & when they make sense, great book & a must read!

What a surprise. I had no idea of the back story and where or how he came to be in charge. Couldn’t stop reading as I know how it ends I have Disney + but I kept thinking he is not going to make it everything is against him....

Well Done.... Well done account of an amazing career...Several “take-aways” as I transition into retirement...

Excellent Read. I have always been interested in Disney and I enjoyed reading this book. Never dull, Robert does a great job of outlining his career and how he got to be the CEO of Disney. Back stories, headlines.....all covered in interesting detail and a very human touch to the book to boot. Enjoyable reading for a layman and also good subject matter for future leaders...whether it be in large corporations or small non profit charities.

Excellent. Definitely a book you need in your library

Very good read. I couldn’t put it down after the first few chapters. His interaction with so many people on so many levels was mesmerizing.

A peek behind the curtain. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is curious about the inner machinations of a major corporation like Disney and the thought process that goes into making executive decisions.

Authentic to the core. Bob Iger is so open in this book about his time at ABC and then at Disney all the way to leading the company for 14+ years as CEO. His humble style of leading and not accepting anything but the best is why Disney has done so well since he’s been at the helm. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a leader, or aspiring to be one. This book is also great for any fan of Disney and the enter workings of such an amazing company. 10 out of 10!

Inspired. Great Story!

Wow.. This book is such a great read. What an inspiring story.

A definite read, Disney fan or not!. I couldn’t put this down. Such a fascinating story of Iger’s adventure through the entertainment industry and The Walt Disney Company. There’s some great lessons and fun anecdotes that are something to cherish and apply to your own life.

Great book. A good leader and positive teacher.

A must read.. I’ve been trying to meet a goal of 1 book per month this year after not reading for quite some time. This is the first book that drew me in and I read the entire thing in just over a week. I could not put it down. The lessons were amazing and I will certainly carry them through the rest of my career.

A concise valuable book on leadership. It was straight to the point with interesting anecdotes about his journey and the amazing acquisitions. I appreciated his weaving of the wisdom as he told the story. And more importantly captured it and the end to highlight them again. Very valuable read.

Brilliant and inspiring read. Bob Iger is a visionary who takes the reader for a ride of a lifetime from beginning to end. I couldn’t put this book down. I didn’t want to put this book down. He’s gives readers priceless leadership nuggets. This is the perfect book for those who are looking for guidance to lead any organization—big or small. I’m inspired my Iger’s honesty and transparency. His memory is sharp, which makes his storytelling rich. I’ll recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good read!

Great Book on Leadership. What Bob Iger has out in this book, everyone should read. Most especially business leaders, managers, and anyone who had to iterate on the day-to-day for others. Bob is concise and insightful and what he puts forward in this book may seem like common sense, but in reality is needed all offer the world.

Loved every page of this book. This book was fantastic. Iger is as great a storyteller as he is a CEO & human being. Great read, would recommend to any Disney fan or anyone looking to improve themselves. Highly recommend.

Highly recommend. Super interesting to hear what it takes to run a successful pubic company and how demanding the job is.

An incredible read!. This book is one of the most inspiring I’ve read. Bob’s purpose is not to just showcase his notable achievements, but also, to tell how they came about with struggles. I would definitely recommend to anyone. It is a great read for young and aspiring leaders.
