A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer Book Summary

This book chronicles the unforgettable account of one of the most severe child abuse cases in California history. It is the story of Dave Pelzer, who was brutally beaten and starved by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother: a mother who played tortuous, unpredictable games--games that left him nearly dead. He had to learn how to play his mother's games in order to survive because she no longer considered him a son, but a slave; and no longer a boy, but an "it."

Dave's bed was an old army cot in the basement, and his clothes were torn and raunchy. When his mother allowed him the luxury of food, it was nothing more than spoiled scraps that even the dogs refused to eat. The outside world knew nothing of his living nightmare. He had nothing or no one to turn to, but his dreams kept him alive--dreams of someone taking care of him, loving him and calling him their son.

Sadness. This is a really great book... it’s really sad to know how a mother can have such hatred in her heart to do this to her son. I think this shows the importance that one moment of affection or anything can make an huge impact of a child’s life

Beautifully written. And now I’m crying..

trusf. it’s a true story that he put out there not for sorrys and awh he did it bc he couldn’t hide anymore

Heartbreakingly Beautiful. This book shows through the eyes of a child the abuse and neglect so many adults ignore. It had me in tears and I applaud the author for telling his story! You are the true hero in your own story.

Outstanding !. My husband recommended that I read this book , and so I purchased it and dug straight into it . I can’t tell you how many times I cried while reading this book .

Spoke to me. As a child i went through a lot. One of my only escapes were books. I read this book as child and it stuck with me through my adult years. I’ve since reread it and it was nice to know I wasn’t alone so thank you for writing this.

Amazing Story!. This book I’s amazing! I’m studying Human Development & Family Studies. I read this book in 48 hours and I must say, I wanted more of it. This story will have you telling all of your peers to read it. I would encourage everyone to read!

So so so sad. Terribly sad. Very graphic and well written. His story is grand and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. He definitely connects with readers

If there was a higher rating, I would give it the highest rating.. I cried several times while reading this book. I cannot believe that a woman that was supposed to be a loving, caring mother was such a horrible human being! I cannot imagine what this child had to grow up with and how much trauma he was put through and is gonna have to live with the rest of his life. 🥺🥺

Amazing. This book has made me cry so much and opened my eyes even more. my heart goes out to David for everything that he went through, I cannot imagine someone even surviving this type of abuse and pain. Thank you for sharing a part of your life David.

Awesome. I love this book , I’m not a reader but this book has me wrapped around it! Awesome.

Heart gripping. Definitely pulled at my heart strings— a terribly sad story

Heart wrenching!. I felt every emotion that David portrayed. As a victim of child abuse, I felt helpless reading this. I definitely recommend this book to anyone, but just prepare to cry.

Oh. My. God.. This is an AMAZING book. My eyes were glued. It’s a very upsetting book however Pelzer wrote this excellently. I feel bad for him but is glad he healed over time. I pray to him and other children who went/are going through what he went through. This was very enjoyable and I can’t wait to read his other books! <3

You’re not alone. I read this book as a child and multiple times since, I can relate to many things portrayed in the story. That being said as a child surrounded by hate and neglect this book assured me, through many years that things can and will get better, thank you🙏🏼

Amazing!. one of my favorite books!

I was left in tears. I’ve been recommended this book for years, but never had the opportunity to read it until now. I wish I had read it sooner. Once I started reading, I could not stop. It’s so incredibly thought-provoking and heart-wrenching; tears were absolutely shed multiple times while reading this. A very powerful story of trauma no child should experience and a feeling of hope for every kid out there who does.

Tough. I’m a 27 year old man and I’m reading this for the first time… I cried almost every chapter along the way. This is gripping. I literally read it in one sitting, i couldn’t put it down.

A child called it. I really loved this book it was really sad it I love how he just kept fighting even though she was killing him

A MUST READ!. An extremely sad, disturbing and courageous story. A must read!

God bless you everyday. Read this book years back. After reading it, I had hatred in my hatred. I had so much hatred for his mother. Wonder what happened to her. It’s been about 15yrs or so since I’ve read it and every time I come across this book it reminds me of the cruel life he lived and makes me wonder how many children are going through this at this very moment. God bless all our children. 😘😘😘♥️♥️♥️♥️

Real and raw.. Read this in one day it was so good. Very sad but I’m so glad to see he survived

Great True Story. This is by far my favorite book ever. I’m speechless.

Truly eye opening. This is an amazing book written in such a way you almost feel like you’re in the rooms and house in which these terrible acts have taken place. We know not enough of what goes on behind closed doors. We must be great full for every ounce of good in our lives.
