Second First Impressions by Sally Thorne Book Summary

“Second First Impressions is the warmest, coziest, sweetest book of the year, an absolutely perfect blend of humor and heart. I want to live inside Sally Thorne’s brain.” —Emily Henry, New York Times bestselling of Beach Read

From the USA Today bestselling author of The Hating Game, soon to be a movie starring Lucy Hale and Austin Stowell, and 99 Percent Mine comes the clever, funny, and unforgettable story of a muscular, tattooed man hired as an assistant to two old women—under the watchful eye of a beautiful retirement home manager.

Dazzle (n): Brightness that blinds someone temporarily.

Position Vacant: Two ancient old women residing at Providence Retirement Villa seek male assistant for casual exploitation and good-natured humiliation. Duties include boutique shopping, fast-food fetching, and sincerely rendered flattery. Good looks a bonus—but we aren’t picky.

An advertisement has been placed (again!) by the wealthy and eccentric Parloni Sisters. The salary is generous and the employers are 90 years old, so how hard could the job be? Well, none have lasted longer than a week. Most boys leave in tears.

Ruthie Midona will work in Providence’s front office, and be at the Parloni’s beck and call, forever. That’s sort of her life plan. If Ruthie can run the place in her almost-retired bosses’ absence, with no hijinks/hiccups, she has a shot at becoming the new manager. She might also be able to defend her safe little world from Prescott Development, the new buyer of the prime site. Maybe after all that, she can find a cute guy to date. All she needs to do is stay serious—and that’s what she does best.

Until, one day, someone dazzling blows into town.

Teddy Prescott devotes his life to sleeping, tattooing, and avoiding seriousness. When Teddy needs a place to crash, he makes a deal with his developer dad. Teddy can stay in one of Providence’s on-site maintenance cottages—right next door to an unimpressed Ruthie—but only if he works there and starts to grow up.

Ruthie knows how this sweetly selfish rich boy can earn his keep—and be out of her hair in under a week. After all, there is a position vacant…

Definitely a slow burn romance. I did love the romance and slow burn of this book but at the end it felt like too much happiness happened at once. With Teddy’s family coming back together and the proposal and him coming back. I was like woah everyone calm down.

Enemies to lovers GEM!. Ruthie’s inner monologue of naughty involves the inked man riding a motorcycle who she pays it forward by purchasing his gas. Unfortunately the tattooed goddess with his luscious locks of hair and leather jacket, believes she is dressed as an elderly person off to costume party. Ruthie is 25 living a very simple life working at a retirement village, adorning herself in thrift store cardigans and skirts and acting 10x her age. She has forgotten she is young, beautiful and full of life. Teddy who is born to run is back in town, short on cash with his eye on the prize - owning his own tattoo parlor. Faithful to his word, he arrives the next day at her employers office with cash to pay her back but he soon finds himself working along side her. He accepts the role as assistant for two women residents flush with cash. Throughout the book, she is constantly reminded “he is not your type” while Teddy is told don’t corrupt her and run-off leaving her broken hearted. Can Ruthie and Teddy change their first impressions of each other to reset their reputations as the love them leave them and frugal prude? The beginning got off to a shaky start but once I found the books stride I couldn’t put it down. The secondary cast of characters are highly entertaining from Mel to rich biddies. This book explores family trauma, self-loathing and letting-go to finally be you. Thank you NetGalley and William Morrow for an ARC for an honest review. Publication date - April 13

Sally does it again. This one took a while to grow on me but once it did, I couldn’t stop reading. Brb while I go look for my Theodore.

4 stars.. Very cute. Great characters. The ending felt a little rushed though.

My cheeks hurt from smiling. Absolutely wonderful.

you need to get through it. tried reading this once and i couldn’t get past the sample portion. started again today, read it in five hours. cried on the plane i kept taking my mask off to wipe my tears hoping the guy next to me couldn’t see. it’s great. you just need to get through the beginning

Awful. Don’t buy it. I gave it 8 chapters and couldn’t continue. Not worth it.

Meh. I felt like every 100 pages I was waiting for the book to start and it never did. It was okay but It just felt so dragged out and like the beginning of the book was the last 20 pages. I don’t know just my opinion. I love this author’s work, this book just wasn’t for me.

Cute, cheesy, and fun!. This was just beautiful. Took a bit to lure me in, but once it did, I was hooked. As cheesy as it is wonderful, this is a burn so slow it hurts. Really enjoyed how hard these characters had to work to not only find the best in themselves, but also realize that they were worthy of each other. Renata and Aggie were my favorite part of this book, I absolutely loved their story. Ruthie’s inner monologue made me laugh out loud more than once, and the ending, although a bit too syrupy sweet, was endearing all the same.

Id love to see this as a movie!. I didn’t think I would love it as much as I love the hating game but I did! I feel like Sally Thorne has grown a lot since then because this story is more deep. The characters have to go through some growth and overcome hard things... it kind of breaks your heart even once you finally learn more about it farther into the book. I loved Teddy, he’s such an interesting character that is hard to predict what he’s going to say next. I’m crossing my fingers that they make this story into a movie too, I haven’t seen another one quite like this story and it would be such a great one!

Felt like watching a romcom. Cheesy and cute and easy to read

Funny and Sweet. Funny and sweet, I stayed up 2 nights in a row to read this

Loved. Slow burn. I loved it. Read it twice

Snoozey. I struggled buying into either of the main characters. I felt like I was reading about naive, overly religious, prudish, immature teenagers. Even their names were so overtly juvenile. I’m all for liking yourself for who you are and self-love and opposites attract troupes - but this one did not work. It made no sense why Teddy was drawn to Ruthie and her OCD read flat and not like what it is like to truly have OCD. I’m not really sure what this story even was, it wasn’t funny enough to be a rom-com and not steamy enough to be sexy and not real enough to be realistic fiction. I did really like Aggie and Renata but it was so ridiculous that it didn’t occur to Ruthie that they were in fact lovers, which even the reader could spot early on so it just made Ruthie even more unlikeable and unbelievable.

Whimsical and engaging.. Charming!

A slooow burn— BUT SO WORTH IT!. I haven’t loved two characters this much in forever. This story is sweet, funny, and the kind of book you’ll want to read over and over whenever you need a pick me up. Sally strikes again!

Give & Take. Another great read from Thorne! I love her voice- it’s creative, fluid, and so funny! The love story was a real slow burn and honestly not my favourite but I liked the push/pull of growth in the characters. Both the symbolic and physical give and take was refreshing. However I will say I found the conflict resolve to be a little to easy and clean.
