A nyolcvanas éveiben járó Eddie szinte egész életében karbantartóként dolgozott a Ruby rakpart vidámparkban. Egy nap kábelhiba miatt vészhelyzet alakul ki, és egy hirtelen villanás következtében Eddie már egy másik dimenzióban találja magát. Megkezdődik különös utazása a mennyországban, ahol öt emberrel találkozik, és szép lassan kibontakozik előttünk egykori élete: háborús múltja, nehéz gyermekkora, bonyolult kapcsolata apjával, és az, hogyan találkozott az igaz szerelemmel. Valamint fény derül a véletlenek játékára, amely bűnössé tette őt.
Mitch Albom regénye nem csupán egy ember szívszorító története, hanem tanulságos mese, amely arra is figyelmeztet, hogy életünket sok olyan apró mozzanat befolyásolja, amelyekről nem veszünk tudomást.
