Joy to the Duke. A Christmas love story rekindled. Calder is very broken and hurt from his past. It’s made him a hard man. Felicity has returned to her home town to help her sick Mom recover from her illness. When she sees Calder she finds out her mother is not the only one she must help.

Love Is All Around. Neglected and mistreated by father, check. Rejected by the woman he loved, check. Mean as a snake, cold as ice, and determined to end the expense along with the joy and fun of Christmas, check. A Christmas Carol is my favorite Christmas story and movie. Calder Stafford is one of the best Scroogie characters I have read in quite a while. Ebenezer would be proud. His sisters try to understand him and want him to be happy, but Calder won’t let them close. He has nightmares about his past and the woman his father caused him to lose. When his old love returns to town, Felicity Garland becomes all of the ghosts of Christmas in his world. As they talk and the truth come to light, things begin to change. Can Calder and Felicity get beyond the betrayal of the past? Will Calder finally find the happiness denied him, or is it too late? Are we headed toward a happily ever after or a great big Bah Humbug? Joy to the Duke is a story of forgiveness and reunion. The last story in the series ties everything together in an epilogue that show quite clearly that Love is All Around. 2nd time around. I really wasn’t sure how Darcy Burke was going to get any HEA for ‘Chill’, the third and last sibling in this series. In the first two books he is portrayed as an unfeeling, uncaring brute. All of his issues stem from a father who treated him badly and his sisters very differently. A conscious decision to be the public opposite of his father brings him into conflict with his family and neighbours. Cue the lost love of his life and his slow realisation that he can choose to be whomever he wants to be. He need not be defined by his father’s behaviour towards him, as he has already proven he can make it on his own. This homage to A Christmas Carol demonstrates that taking time to notice and embrace the small moments in life can make a big difference to our attitude. Having just recently watched a woman rush through an art gallery taking photos of the artwork instead of being in the moment with them, I felt pleased when Calder took his time to really look and feel. Felicity has always loved Calder, despite their cruel separation. She wants to see the old Calder back again. She is sure that version of himself still exists inside. Felicity’s determination to bring about that change is relentless and commendable. This was a great way to end this wonderful Christmas series. Each story can be read as a stand alone, but the beauty of this family’s resurrection is found when they these books are read as a set. Give yourself a Christmas present and enjoy this series.

What a fascinating twist on A Christmas Carol. What a fascinating twist on A Christmas Carol. Calder and Felicity had the last ten years of their happiness stolen from them when his father schemed to keep them apart. My heart broke for this pair over the grief and pain caused by the old duke, but I loved watching all the trouble Felicity went to in order to thaw Calder’s heart back out. And in a scene worthy of The Grinch, we even witness Chill’s heart grow three sizes by the end. Now I’m kind of sad to say “goodbye” to these siblings and their extended families. I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley.

A touch of Dickens. I received an ARC of this book to read through NetGalley in exchange for a fair review. Joy to the Duke is the 3rd and final novella in Darcy Burke’s regency Christmas trilogy Love Is All Around. This one is a second chance at love story featuring the Scrooge-like Calder Stafford, Duke of Hartwell. Desperately unhappy but determined not to do anything his cruel father would have approved of Calder Stafford is becoming more and more isolated from his friends and his sisters because of his refusal to host the annual St. Stephen’s day festivities at Hartwell or to support a local children’s home as they were his father’s pet projects. When he meets his first love Felicity Garland once again and they realise that the reasons they separated were all due to his fathers machinations his heart begins to melt but it’s been 10 years and he’s not sure he could ever be the person he once was again.
