Apocalypse Never by Michael Shellenberger Book Summary

Now a National Bestseller!

Climate change is real but it’s not the end of the world. It is not even our most serious environmental problem.

Michael Shellenberger has been fighting for a greener planet for decades. He helped save the world’s last unprotected redwoods. He co-created the predecessor to today’s Green New Deal. And he led a successful effort by climate scientists and activists to keep nuclear plants operating, preventing a spike of emissions.

But in 2019, as some claimed “billions of people are going to die,” contributing to rising anxiety, including among adolescents, Shellenberger decided that, as a lifelong environmental activist, leading energy expert, and father of a teenage daughter, he needed to speak out to separate science from fiction.

Despite decades of news media attention, many remain ignorant of basic facts. Carbon emissions peaked and have been declining in most developed nations for over a decade. Deaths from extreme weather, even in poor nations, declined 80 percent over the last four decades. And the risk of Earth warming to very high temperatures is increasingly unlikely thanks to slowing population growth and abundant natural gas.

Curiously, the people who are the most alarmist about the problems also tend to oppose the obvious solutions.

What’s really behind the rise of apocalyptic environmentalism? There are powerful financial interests. There are desires for status and power. But most of all there is a desire among supposedly secular people for transcendence. This spiritual impulse can be natural and healthy. But in preaching fear without love, and guilt without redemption, the new religion is failing to satisfy our deepest psychological and existential needs.

Apocalypse Never (Michael Shellenberger) Book Reviews 2024

💸 Want to send money abroad for free?

We transfer money over €4 billion every month. We enable individual and business accounts to save 4 million Euros on bank transfer fees. Want to send free money abroad or transfer money abroad for free? Free international money transfer!

What if everything you were told was a lie?. This is a big, fascinating and sprawling book on a massive grab-bag of topics. Here are a few takeaways. Use nuclear power, it has a zero carbon footprint and provides ample power for everyone. Be suspicious of wind and solar; it kills birds, and can only supply electricity a fraction of the time it’s needed, at staggering cost. Basically, it has almost no energy density and nuclear power has oodles, enough to let anyone who wants to power up a spiffy Tesla. Respect the dreams, asperations and desires of poor third world folks. Turns out they could really use some tasty fossil fuel based power. A lot of them have to spend their days collecting firewood, keeping the fire burning and hot enough to cook. It would. transform their lives to get an electric stove and get their food hot with the push of a button. And for God’s sake don’t listen to the international left. They just want to keep poor countries down so they can justify flying in their $46 million private jets. Which have, by themselves, the carbon footprint of thousands of broke third world people.

Young eco activists need to read. It’s jarringly different narrative to that which I learned in college readings. This book is optimistic and compassionately grounded in thorough investigation. I’m joyful to have learned the truth to a situation that seemed near hopeless and resentful before.

Become an environmental humanist.. Let’s stop blocking the developing world’s access to cheap, reliable electricity just because the source is fossil fuel. Let’s start installing more reliable nuclear power today while we work on unreliable, non-functional, expensive wind and solar technology.

Required reading. I actually listed to the audio version first, but had to come buy the digital version for further reference and review. This book opened my eyes. Incredible read. It should be required reading.

A great book. Very interesting and insightful with lots of facts with sources.

Thanks. Facts and no drama. Need more of it.

An Environmental Gamechanger. If you haven’t read this book, wherever you are on the issue, you don’t really know much about the issue.

A good counterpoint to current dogma. It is difficult to argue in defiance of common theory, but this book does a good job. The commentary about 3rd world countries being denied a reasonable path to technological skill is a crucial point.

A combination of all that matters. This book is the first that I’ve found which examines the science and economics of solutions to our environmental challenges. If the reader is willing to question what they know and what they believe then this will help because it looks towards ways to create a brighter future for all humans and animals.

Interesting to say the least. Really enjoyed this read, definitely makes you think about some of the hand wringing you see on the news

Excellent, fact based. If you want to read a climate book by an internationally acclaimed environmental expert (worked for Obama & awarde Time’s Environmentalist of the year” in 2008), who separates out science from politicized claims, this is the book for you. I have raad about environmental issues for over 30 years, and this is the most informative book that I have ever read.

Excellent and Balanced. Does a good job of telling both sides of an archetypal story regarding the balance between nature and culture.

Fundamentally Flawed. In Apocalypse Never, Michael Shellenberger has released an apt description in the flaws of modern environmentalism. Unfortunately this is in contrast to the books stated aim of proving that climate change may not be our largest environmental issue. Rising tides are barely mentioned and a significant amount of scientific literature that directly contradicts Michael exists to contradict his claim that climate change is not increasing the damage caused by natural disasters. Perhaps worse still is the shady marketing campaign used to sell the book. A highly provocative article was written for Forbes, and when it was removed for its egregious self promotion, Michael claimed censorship. In spite of the obvious work and talent that had been invested into this book I can only award it 2 stars.

A story of hope. There are a lot of people out there trying to discredit this book but you get the feeling those people either haven’t read it, don’t understand it or, worse, don’t want to understand it because it doesn’t fit their closed narrative or agenda. This is a must-read book for environmentalists, economists, policy makers or anyone just wanting to hear the other side of the story for once. It is a story of hope, not denial and exposes the hypocrisy and meddling of anxiety-driven western governments and NGOs doing more harm than good in developing countries. It is great piece of work that is engaging, eye-opening, well-written and researched. I couldn’t rate this highly enough.

Disagreeable climate. Author American. Writer and contrarian thinker on environmental matters. Named one of Time magazine's Heroes of the Environment in 2008 but little known in the antipodes before an op-ed appeared on the front page of The Australian the week starting 6 July 2020. Conservative columnists at the Oz and Sky News enthused, the Guardian pooh-poohed. Business as usual. Summary Things aren't as bad as the environmental terrorists try to make out. Extinction Rebellion is a pain in the bum (No argument there). Nuclear has a lot more going for it than against it, and is a whole heap better than renewables. Here's why. The antinuclear movement is about a political agenda that has nothing to do with environmentalism, and is part funded by the fossil fuel industry. (Bill McKibben, I'm looking at you). Food security and disease are more important than a slight rise in the mercury yada, yada. Impressive list of references. Comment Mr S highlights the ways in which the mainstream environmental movement (IPCC etc) spins the available data to support its case, and the propensity for self styled "eco-warriors" to parrot lines like "this is what science tells us" and when they haven't read any of the science and probably couldn't understand it even if they had. (Kudos to Greta Thunberg for her enthusiasm, but I have trouble accepting 16-year-old high school drop outs as experts on anything apart from online gaming and social media.) However, while Mr S makes some good points, he cites data selectively himself, more than once as far as I could tell, and I'm no expert. Worth reading as an update of Bjorn Lomberg's The Skeptical Environmentalist 20 years on, but unlikely to change the world, or many people's opinions, I suspect.

Dangerously misleading. There’s cherry-picked evidence littered through this book and drives the narrative of distrust in experts and scientific consensus. A book that solidifies the average Joe Blow’s misunderstanding of climatology.

Factual and balanced. Brilliant read.. A sobering perspective on environmental policy and world poverty. Captivating and interesting. Worth the read.

Not For Climate Alarmists. Excellent book with sensible conclusions, putting climate change into perspective. This book would not be popular with climate change cultists who have been predicting an apocalypse for decades, but are increasingly frustrated and angry because it is not happening.

Dangerous.... ...if you love extremely biased and panicked CC discussion. This book is brilliant because it levels the debate out as should have been done many years ago. As a scientist myself I am embarrassed by the hysteria and pile on that many of the worlds scientists (and media) have created around CC and this book corrects that somewhat. The hysteria is nothing more than squabbling over the spotlight. Shellenberger exposes this and sinks their battleship, so expect to see lots of complaints about this book. Revolutionary!
