The Lies That Bind by Emily Giffin Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this irresistible novel from the author of All We Ever Wanted and Something Borrowed, a young woman falls hard for an impossibly perfect man before he disappears without a trace. . . .

It’s 2 A.M. on a Saturday night in the spring of 2001, and twenty-eight-year-old Cecily Gardner sits alone in a dive bar in New York’s East Village, questioning her life. Feeling lonesome and homesick for the Midwest, she wonders if she’ll ever make it as a reporter in the big city—and whether she made a terrible mistake in breaking up with her longtime boyfriend, Matthew.

As Cecily reaches for the phone to call him, she hears a guy on the barstool next to her say, “Don’t do it—you’ll regret it.” Something tells her to listen, and over the next several hours—and shots of tequila—the two forge an unlikely connection. That should be it, they both decide the next morning, as Cecily reminds herself of the perils of a rebound relationship. Moreover, their timing couldn’t be worse—Grant is preparing to quit his job and move overseas. Yet despite all their obstacles, they can’t seem to say goodbye, and for the first time in her carefully constructed life, Cecily follows her heart instead of her head.

Then Grant disappears in the chaos of 9/11. Fearing the worst, Cecily spots his face on a missing-person poster, and realizes she is not the only one searching for him. Her investigative reporting instincts kick into action as she vows to discover the truth. But the questions pile up fast: How well did she really know Grant? Did he ever really love her? And is it possible to love a man who wasn’t who he seemed to be?

The Lies That Bind is a mesmerizing and emotionally resonant exploration of the never-ending search for love and truth—in our relationships, our careers, and deep within our own hearts.

Her best yet. I finished this in less than 2 days! Read it too fast and was depressed when it finished! Such a great read!

Love this story. Finished it in one day! Great characters and plot twists. Highly recommend.

The Lies That Bind. Big Emily Giffin fan, but found this newest novel very disappointing. As a lifetime New Yorker who experienced 9/11 first hand, story line was totally incredulous. The City was a numbing place to live and work for months on end. Too many lives lost and shattered, but Giffin’s characters succeed in creating and ending long-standing relationships far too quickly in this environment. Some twists and turns but ending very predictable. Too many other good summer reads to waste on this one. Rik, NYC July 2020

The ties that remind. I LOVE Emily Griffin. I liked some of the characters a lot. But using 9/11 as a plot device was in extraordinarily bad taste. This book could have been written leaving 9/11 out, it wouldn’t have been as easy, but it would have been more impactful, suspenseful, resectful, and fulfilling. This also leaves women with the idea that men who cheat and lie probably still love them, and there’s probably an understandable excuse. Also, this book didn’t need to be written at all. It was just Something Borrowed with a gross 9/11 sham of a backdrop. Amy was just Darcy from something borrowed. Grant was Dex. Cecily was Rachel. Scottie was Ethan. This book was hard in the worst way, and easy in the worst way.

Enjoyed this one - quick and easy read. This was a quick and easy read. Not as gritty and more dramatic than Emily's usual but still good!

So good!!. I finished in 2 days. Couldn’t put it down!

Great flow and unsuspecting twists. Cecily breaks up with her bf Matthew who has been unwilling to commit depressed she heads to bar close to her house. She meets a man Grant who intrigues and has an incredible connection with her immediately. They begin seeing one another but soon Grant has to leave country with his twin brother who has ALS for clinical trials and he and Cecily end up meeting overseas and cementing their relationship. After months of being gone, Grant comes back to NYC AND He heads to her apartment. They spend the night together and when she wakes he is gone and 9/11 transpires. Grant is missing and she is a reporter who finds a MISSING sign for Grant after calling the # she learns he is married. She befriends his wife and grieves his death. She and Matthew reconcile get engaged and she finds out she’s pregnant. Not knowing the paternity of the child she and Matthewbvreak up and in the midst of that she discovers that Grant was criminally charged with insider trading and is alive. He’s been hiding at his brothers place. When he turns himself in and does time in jail Cecily has the baby which is a girl and is Grants. They get together once he’s released from prison and end up together but much happens in between with her and wife Amy as well as Matthew and their wedding plans that never happened

My new favorite Emily Giffin novel!. I read this book in one day and absolutely loved it! So well-written. Loved the characters and the plot. I also loved the overall message of the story. Highly, highly recommend!

❤️❤️. Another captivating story by Emily Giffin!

Not her best. I am a Emily Giffin Stan; but I just did not love this one. It starts out wonderfully and hooked me in. I was intrigued by Cecily and Grant’s potential romance. The book was ok until about 80% in, and then it got far fetched. It is almost like two different people wrote the book. The ending was disappointing.

Masterfully empty. Just because you can’t put a book down doesn’t mean it’s satisfying or well done. Yes, it’s compelling, but in the manner of a third-rate soap opera. Characters are caricatures, pay offs are absurd, and the backdrop of 9/11 borders on insulting, since it’s clearly a device. Shallow, above-average writing at best.

No No No. Huge Giffin fan, or at least I was before her latest, The Lies That Bind. I’ve never lived in NYC but remember all too well 9/11 and this story line is absolutely preposterous, almost a slap in the face. I’m not even finished with the book but I’m so repulsed, I don’t know if I can finish it? Would return and get my $ back on general principle alone if I could.

Slow start, but keep going!. Once I got halfway through, I couldn’t put it down.

Great Read!. Great book!

Not her best. I have enjoyed all her other books. This one was predictable and too far fetched. The ending was a disappointment. I skipped ahead because I couldn’t read anymore of the main character pining for a sociopath.

Easy read, bad endinf. I should’ve known with this author that she was going to have an odd ending, it’s usually not the one you expect (or even root for lol) but this one was still weird. Without spoiling anything, she basically sells us on a storyline, then spends the rest of the book convincing us it was all BS and then takes it all back at the very end. I finished it going, “wait, seriously?!”

Mediocre. I wasn’t a huge fan of this book. It seemed rather depressing and not very uplifting. I definitely didn’t expect the outcome of the ending. I will say that kaykaybean13 wrote a horrible review on June 7 giving away the entire premise of the book, ruining the book experience for all readers. Please take kaykaybean13’s review down so anyone else’s reading experience isn’t ruined before reading this book.

Amazing, as always. Emily Giffin definitely did it again, another amazing love story that breaks all the rules and has all of the characters defying the odds. I love it. I read it in 24 hrs. I’m sad it’s over. Time for another!! Thank you Emily.

Love it. Lovely read! When doesn’t emily knock it out of the park. I enjoy her writing so much

Read in 12 hrs amazing. Such a good book! I really hope they make a movie out of this! I cried when it was over I was so sad it ended hopefully she also makes a sequel. I just loved these characters so much and the story line!

LOVED!. Wow, what a ride! The Lies That Bind by Emily Giffin was absolutely incredible. I haven’t read a book that I enjoyed so much, and was unable to put down in quite some time! This story contains a multitude of twists, turns, and surprises that I never saw coming. A web of lies, deceit, and crazy coincidences take this plot and the characters in it to the next level. I totally loved the premise of this book, and highly recommend it to all!

Loved it!!. I love the surprises throughout!! Easy read that kept your attention!👍🏻 I’ve recommended it!

The Lies That Bind. I could not put this book down, I finished it in a day. I couldn’t wait to turn the page. It’s a smooth read, just the right amount of characters. Best book I’ve read all year.

Surprise Twists. Captured by this one.. Great little twists. Probably the best book I’ve read from her. Loved it.

The Lies That Bind. Loved this book. Make sure you you don’t have a lot going on when you start reading it because you will not want to put it down. The story is suspenseful and it takes you on an emotional roller coaster. I have read and enjoyed all Emily Griffin’s novels and this is my favorite so far! It would make a great movie!

Can’t put this book down!. I love this book, all get books! I didn’t want to sleep, eat, work, talk to anyone, I barely wanted to walk my dogs lol This book is wonderful as all of her books are!

Wow... just wow. This one is the best yet. So many twists it keep me reading the whole weekend. This has to be one of my favorites by this author.

The Lies That Are Spellbinding. Just what you want from Emily Griffin. Read it in a few hours as it was addictive.

Disappointing. Love Giffin have read all her books. This was a disappointment from start to finish. Flickers of a good story appeared but mostly it was the main character whining and nothing happening. Don’t waste your time.

Best yet. I couldn’t put the book down !

Read it in 2 days. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book so fast! Could not put it down.

Here’s a better story that won’t cost you.. I was shopping in Chanel when I saw my idol in the store as well. We were both by the entrance; when we saw and heard an obsessed fan waving hysterically and screaming, “OMG its Meghan Markle. I want to be you Meghan. I wish upon a star that I was you everyday.” The crazed fan was thankfully dragged by her spilt ends out of sight. Meghan and I shared a good laugh. Later someone told us the fan was Emily Giffin. To which we responded, “Who?”

Don’t bother. The lead character is so trite. This story could of been so interesting but it’s just not. It tries hard but doesn’t get to it. Not one of the main characters are endearing. It’s like the author has never met anyone from the Midwest before. The leads mother is right of our of a cheesy 90s sitcom. I’ve read all Emily’s book and enjoyed them so this was very disappointing.

Loved it!. Loved this book! Lots of twists I didn’t see coming!

Falls completely flat. Started in an interesting way, I really was getting vested in the Cecily and Grant story, even the 9/11 storyline opened it up for a very interesting second half of the book, but then the author got lazy and fast tracked the ending with very little detail. It felt like 2 different people wrote the first half of the book and the second half. What a disappointing, boring and overly predictable ending.

Page turner. Couldn’t put it down!

The BEST. Read this book so fast!!!!
