Home Before Dark by Riley Sager Book Summary

In the latest thriller from New York Times bestseller Riley Sager, a woman returns to the house made famous by her father’s bestselling horror memoir. Is the place really haunted by evil forces, as her father claimed? Or are there more earthbound—and dangerous—secrets hidden within its walls?

What was it like? Living in that house.

Maggie Holt is used to such questions. Twenty-five years ago, she and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. They spent three weeks there before fleeing in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a nonfiction book called House of Horrors. His tale of ghostly happenings and encounters with malevolent spirits became a worldwide phenomenon, rivaling The Amityville Horror in popularity—and skepticism.

Today, Maggie is a restorer of old homes and too young to remember any of the events mentioned in her father's book. But she also doesn’t believe a word of it. Ghosts, after all, don’t exist. When Maggie inherits Baneberry Hall after her father's death, she returns to renovate the place to prepare it for sale. But her homecoming is anything but warm. People from the past, chronicled in House of Horrors, lurk in the shadows. And locals aren’t thrilled that their small town has been made infamous thanks to Maggie’s father. Even more unnerving is Baneberry Hall itself—a place filled with relics from another era that hint at a history of dark deeds. As Maggie experiences strange occurrences straight out of her father’s book, she starts to believe that what he wrote was more fact than fiction.

A thrilling ride!. This was really great! Spooky, creepy, mysterious, and exciting from start to finish. The story was a thrill ride that kept me guessing until the end.. just when I thought I knew what was happening the plot thickened! I loved it and will definitely be reading more by this author soon!!!

This book scared me so good. This is the first book by Riley sager that I’ve read and let me tell you. It scared me so good and bad. I’ve watched a lot of scary movies and this one needs to be one it’s very good and fast pace

Creepy Page Turner!. This was my favorite book by this author! It kept my interest from the very beginning all the way to the end! I couldn’t put it down!

Unlikeable characters. Cool and complicated story. Found all characters to be annoying and cheesy.

Crap. This book is a total cliche. I had to make myself finish it. It feels like every horror movie you’ve ever watched. The ending is disconnected and it’s monotonous. Awful waste of time and money. I do not recommend.

This book gave me CHILLS. This is the second book I’ve read from this author and they REALLY know how to throw a twist in their stories. Perfect amount of creepiness in every book so far.

Mysterious. This book keeps you guessing until the end! You think you know and then turns out you don’t over and over again. Great read. I read it in two weeks while working a FT job. I couldn’t put it down in my free time. Riley Sager is possibly my favorite author! Thank you for a great book!

Fascinatingly Scary. The authors’ approach to the story from multiple point of views was exciting. One of the most interesting books I’ve read!

Home Before Dark. This is hands down one of the best books I’ve ever read!

What on earth was this? Who is this for?. So if you like cliches of the horror genre and I mean the most obvious cliches ever... then maybe this book is for you. Or if you like reading someone’s desperate screenplay.... I mean book.... attempt then this could work too. This book is bad. The main character is not a protagonist but rather a self absorbed hater that is impossible to root for. The plot twists at the end are a jumbled mess that are impossible to believe let alone sort through. More like the author was on a deadline and threw all the potential endings they had in sticky notes. I can see why the author uses a pseudonym rather than their real name. The shame if this book is too great.

Fantastic !. Man this book was incredible! I couldn’t stop reading it

This author never ceases to amaze me. One of my favorite thriller mystery writers of all time, another book written by this clever, incredibly intelligent plot twister and nearly an unbelievable calculating mindset of where they’re misleading the readers giving them the faintest hint of perhaps a clue that in other books would be the telling clue and solving factors yet have an uncanny and quite spectacular way of giving the reader an immersive &captivating experience with so many twists and whiplash turns in the plots and the latest culprit that you’re completely awestruck. The books are so well done that the author seamlessly and seemingly effortlessly builds to the climactic revelations and drops the shock and awe so brutally that it leaves you dumbfounded albeit equally astonished at this adept ability, high caliber of skill and dynamic complexities of the characters and the spellbinding thirst to know who’s causing the havoc in the stories that will undoubtedly leave all lovers of this genre yearning for more. Author is fascinating at what they do. And no one is quite as clever or as cultivated as this phenomenon. Your heart races, you become convinced you’ve got the score on the one behind the mysterious chaos and you are once again masterminded and outwitted by one of the very best, in my opinion.

Home Before Dark. This book was outstanding!! Best book I’ve read in a long time. This was well thought out and I just could not put it down. Highly recommend if you like psychological thrillers.

Loved. So many twist and turns. Loved it!

Great!!. This was such a good book! I enjoyed the suspense and mystery of it all! I always love how Riley Sager adds her fun little twists in the reading. I was absolutely thrilled reading this book, I especially loved the last couple of chapters how she brought all the answers together. Such a great read.

Excellent and gripping!. Huge plot twist, small jumps and scares. Two points of view... what could be better?

wow. just wow.. i think i read this in a total of three days. i even brought my ipad with me on my morning walk when i had almost finished it. this story will have you tensing every muscle in your body and have you looking over your shoulder, just in case. creaking noises, shadows, glimmers of things that aren’t actually there (or are they?) the whole nine yards of what’s needed to write a fantastic ghost story. this is the first i’ve read of riley sagers work, and i’ll definitely be reading more.

Yes, yes and yes!. I have read all of Sager’s books in the last week. If that says anything, I would urge you to do the same. I usually relish and hold out for the ending like an orgasm, but I couldn’t with his books (also much like an orgasm-yeah, I just said that.) I’m so happy I found him and I hope you do, as well. This was another genius tale; spun of twists and turns. You will (and I say this because I’m an avid horror/psychological thriller reader) never see the ending coming. If so, I guess I’m not that good at figuring out the truth. Brilliant, thoughtful, and mesmerizing; this book kept me on my toes (pardon the cliché.)

Plot Twist!. This book has two major plot twists back to back toward the end. I read this book in 2.5 days and could NOT put it down. I’m still shocked! Read this book!

Creepy and Fun. HOME BEFORE DARK is my second book from Riley Sager. Maggie’s father has passed away and she inherited a house that the family fled 25 years ago because it was haunted. Her father wrote a runaway bestseller tell all about their 20 days at the house. Maggie goes to the house to fix it up with the hopes of selling it. She arrives in a town that hostile toward her father and their book and a house that seems hostile towards her. Told in alternating chapter of present day, and the father’s book “House of Horrors” this was a well crafted mystery-thriller that kept me turning the (digital) pages. Last year I read The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson which I loved. This book feels like it references that book but it’s very different. The psychological terror and humor are not present in this book. But I found the book a bit scarier. Sager does a great job building suspense and using the structure of incorporating the book within a book to build tension. I like that it’s also a call back to classics like The Amityville Horror. Maggie is a sympathetic and resourceful character. I liked the plot of this book. The ending was satisfying. If you like this genre of book, I think it’s a solid read. There wasn’t a lot of gore or really upsetting scenes. Mostly it’s just the tension of what’s actually going on in the house. I look forward to reading Sager’s other books.▪️

Give it a chance..... At first, it felt like a ripoff of The Haunting of Hill House, but by chapter 3 or 4, I couldn’t put it down. Read the entire book in three days. 😳 I’m hoping for a sequel!

A+. Suspenseful and fun. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting a good mystery.

amazing. this book was amazing and beautifully written. Riley Sager books are quickly becoming my favorite thriller books. i kept trying to guess the ending but i wasnt even close everytime. im so glad i read this book!!

Great read. Very entertaining, twisty and exciting.

OH MY GOSHHHH. This was hands down the best book I’ve ever read. I almost exclusively read psychological thrillers (since 2013) but I wanted something a little more. So when I saw this book described as a psychological thriller and HORROR I was sold. It was a wild ride to say the least. Oh my gosh… I am smiling just writing this and reflecting on the book. I had full body chills towards the end of the story and I often times had to stop reading because I was getting scared haha :) I recommend this book to lovers of psychological thrillers, scary stories and plot twists. And I just want throw in one more “oh my goshhhhh” :-D

lame. waste of money tbh

good, not that scary. it was captivating sure but I was expecting some sleepless nights and all i really got was a little jumpy from little noises. SPOILER SPOILER once it was clear there was no real supernatural stuff going on, it got kinda boring and the small amount of fear i felt went away. SPOILER SPOILER

Home Before Dark. What a great book! Riley Sager continues to satisfy my hunger for mystery and thriller novels. I’m always eager to read his next book!

Well Done. Twists and turns, unexpectedly thought I figured out the ending only for it to be flipped on its head again. Perfection 👏🏼

So many plot twists. Amazing book, I couldn’t put it down. The ending was fantastic

Fantastic read. This book was fantastic. Couldn’t put it down.

I can’t figure out the high rating. This was total trash. I wasn’t scared or curious once and once I finished I was mad I pushed through. I read reviews that people needed to wake their spouse so they could finish and I’m floored. Total waste
