Irreversible Damage by Abigail Shrier Book Summary

NAMED A BOOK OF THE YEAR BY THE ECONOMIST AND ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF 2021 BY THE TIMES AND THE SUNDAY TIMES

"Irreversible Damage . . . has caused a storm. Abigail Shrier, a Wall Street Journal writer, does something simple yet devastating: she rigorously lays out the facts." —Janice Turner, The Times of London

Until just a few years ago, gender dysphoria—severe discomfort in one’s biological sex—was vanishingly rare. It was typically found in less than .01 percent of the population, emerged in early childhood, and afflicted males almost exclusively.

But today whole groups of female friends in colleges, high schools, and even middle schools across the country are coming out as “transgender.” These are girls who had never experienced any discomfort in their biological sex until they heard a coming-out story from a speaker at a school assembly or discovered the internet community of trans “influencers.”

Unsuspecting parents are awakening to find their daughters in thrall to hip trans YouTube stars and “gender-affirming” educators and therapists who push life-changing interventions on young girls—including medically unnecessary double mastectomies and puberty blockers that can cause permanent infertility.

Abigail Shrier, a writer for the Wall Street Journal, has dug deep into the trans epidemic, talking to the girls, their agonized parents, and the counselors and doctors who enable gender transitions, as well as to “detransitioners”—young women who bitterly regret what they have done to themselves.

Coming out as transgender immediately boosts these girls’ social status, Shrier finds, but once they take the first steps of transition, it is not easy to walk back. She offers urgently needed advice about how parents can protect their daughters.

A generation of girls is at risk. Abigail Shrier’s essential book will help you understand what the trans craze is and how you can inoculate your child against it—or how to retrieve her from this dangerous path.

Awful. The worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life

Insightful and Well Researched. This is a phenomenal book that is incredibly insightful and very well researched. It is NOT anti-LGBTQ and anybody who claims that it is had not read the book. It has a very important message about young women and their mental health.

Great read. Interesting accounts of adolescent girls dealing with gender identity issues and a great warning to those diving head first into it without any substantial understanding of potential medical and psychological consequences

Anti trans. Bad Apple Books for suggesting this.

This is the WORST. This is the worst thing since I saw my friend dipping steamed broccoli in chocolate expired chocolate milk

well written and well thought out. This book far from being transphobic supports the trans community. What it does do is raise vital issue of underage girls permanently changing their bodies for the rest of their life’s best on mental issues that can be through. To be clear this is absolutely not about conversion therapy (which is completely misguided and wrong) but simple straightforward psychoanalysis for depression. Many rape victims want to make themselves asexual because of their assault. This is tragic. That because of their assault they want to permanently scar their bodies. It’s sad that now you can only be pro-trans by being anti-women. Again this book sets out all these issues very cogently and succinctly .

Bullying and spreading misinformation. Author just verbally attacks any famous trans people she can think of

GET THIS BOOK !. Get the paper back version of this book. Apple will ban it soon.

Presented as facts actually shīt (read to end). Well this is 1/16 logic and 15/16 bias there are people who did regret their choices, but that could’ve been because of actually bad shīt happening to them, but like people not telling their parents, getting binders, and hiding it is likely BECAUSE of transphobia or that they know their parents will disapprove and stop them. Yes, screens ruined us and people are desperate for popularity but that’s not everyone so stop over generalizing stuff.

Anyone saying this book is transphobic has obviously not read it. A fair assessment of the culture, parents, woke mob, and the need for us to question and support as parents, not just affirm. Lots of interviews with parents and transitioned people, it is exceptionally interesting. The woke culture doesn’t like questions though.

Hate this!!. This book is so transphobic! I’m a transgender male and me and my husband read this book, going into it with a positive attitude thinking this was gonna be tips for a parent with a transgender child, but NO! It’s transphobic and rude!! I felt so attacked reading this it was giving me major dysphoria! I hate this book! Wish I could give it 0 stars!! 😡

Transphobic and Insulting. This book is infantilizes trans men as confused teenage girls, but offers no real incite into the world of raising a trans masculine child. Apparently teenage trans men are just homophobic attention seekers, despite the common thread in all of the accounts being unsupportive, ill-informed, and/or dismissive parents. To any parents hoping this book will offer help in how to navigate your child’s newfound identity, I implore you to look elsewhere.

Searching for truth. This book takes courage and self confidence to read. It offers a different perspective. I believe the author and the study it is based on does not harbor any ill intent toward anyone. Instead, I believe there is strong desire to attempt understand. There is so much emotion and noise surrounding this subject matter and takes courage to venture into the fray. In the current social/political environment, it is common place for anyone who offers a perspective that differs from the passionate vocal groups run the risk of being burned to the ground. I give credit to the author for daring to step in and offer this perspective. Although the text can be a bit heavy handed in places, but my intuition tells me there are also truths with in the text. Don’t listen to the hype surrounding this book... purchase or borrow it and decide for yourself. Don’t close off differing perspectives based on someone else’s strong opinion. Be brave, trust your own intellect, be ever curious, and continue to search for truth.

Transphobic nonsense. basically says trans males are confused teenage girls. like omg shut up.

If the Leftists hate it.... ... you know it must be good. The only reason anyone would hate on this book (most likely after not reading it) is if they have a problem with the truth.

Harmful Pseudoscience. Don’t read this garbage, they didn’t interview any trans people for this book. It’s just harmful psychological warfare on children.

Excellent. This is a well reasoned book based on excellent research. It’s fair-minded and explores the issues in a rational manner.

DO NOT READ. This is a biased, transphobic book that basically tells parents that your kid is a girl and they are in a "craze" if they come out as trans and it will pass. The author tries to sound supportive but she is just making parents think its okay to be transphobic. Why don't they just talk to a therapist with the kids instead of relying on this transphobic, biased, stupid book?? 0/5

Fear mongering at its finest. “Gender disphoria didn’t exhaust a couple generations ago” right, and in your time being openly queer was a crime so yeah people hid it. Love that your stance is “ I’m uncomfortable with people being themselves so it must be wrong. Quit speaking for those who didn’t ask you to

Non cis = mental issue. Yes, you read it right

A book all parents should read! If you love your children read it!. Abigail Shrier has put up a “wake up” call to Americans!

Not Transphobic. As a mental health clinician who works with trans and non binary youth, I want to sing the praises of this book. It is describing a phenomenon I have seen time and time again in many of my clients. If you are looking for a book to better understand trans issues and stories, this is not the book for you. This book isn’t really about trans folks, but rather the mental health of teenage girls. I have seen the exact paradigm the author describes played out in school, summer camp, and more clinical settings. It would be a mistake to assume this book invalidates trans folk’s existence. It does not. Nor should one draw sweeping conclusions about the trans community from this book, yet there is something going on that has very little to do with legitimate gender dysphoria. Americans are suckers for anything cloaked in the language of civil rights, yet we must acknowledge, the level of controversy around this book surely indicates the author is onto something. Again, this book is not about trans people. It is about mentally unhealthy teenage girls hijacking the trans narrative as a means of coping with patriarchal standards. There are very few things harder to be than a teenage girl (trans teenagers more so), and the availability of hormonal and transitional services for this population needs to be re-examined by professionals with a queer lens. Surely we can recognize the nuance of discussing this without invalidating or erasing the needs and stories of the LGBTQIA community. This is in fact another part of the story. A part that deserves to be discussed. End rant.

Puts into words everything we’ve been experiencing. You know that feeling as a parent; that intuitively you know something isn’t quite right. But the mainstream media, social media, and the “experts” don’t have a word for it. Or insist you’re an -ist or a -phobe for questioning things. This book eloquently puts into words every single thing we knew in our guts was wrong and out of place, but I wasn’t finding discussed elsewhere. If you truly care about your daughter, you may find this helpful to read so that you can start to understand the underpinning issues contributing to this phenomenon.

A must tead. I heard about this book on a radio station I listen to. What was being discussed was very interesting to me. I immediately got home and purchased it. I couldn’t stop reading. This book holds so much wonderful information for parents and teens. This book has prepared me to have some meaningful and important conversations with my children about the dangers of social media, the danger of peer pressure, and how to talk to them in a positive, and direct way. So many times I gasped in disbelief and disgust for the way our health system is getting away with destroying innocent kids without any remorse nor consequences. This book has opened my eyes, and my knowledge, and I will refer to it from time to time. Thank you Abigail Shriner for having the guts and bravery to put something like this together.

Wow. To think that the author legitimately wrote this, had it proofread, and still decided to publish this trash and tripe is not surprising in the least. How about, instead of attacking our community and our youth, engaging in positive thinking and understanding of the issues at hand and don’t set out to enflame anything just to make a quick buck?

Poorly written, ill informed agenda driven hit piece. It is unfortunately written in an amatueristic style lacking any meaningful deeper analysis of the Transgender community. It is framed Lin the manner of a vent from one perspective or agenda and flesh out from there. I find it lacks nuance and analysis from other perspectives. It unfortunately is a missed opportunity for a deeper analysis with a second perspective and nuanced discussion in prose.

Excellent. Coming across gender critical perspectives and now reading this book has changed the way I see nearly everything going on in the Anglosphere, socioculturally speaking. I highly recommend reading this book, especially if you are like I was and had never really thought critically about the messages being promoted by this gender ideologue movement.

Awful. This book was so insulting! As a transgender male myself, I was horrified reading this NEVER EVER READ THIS BOOK😡😡😡

TRANSPHOBIC. Transphobic, violent and alarming. This book is harming trans people.

Not ok transphobic. Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Irreversible Damage. An excellent book!

Important. Thank you Abigail for sharing such an important message with the world, I wish more people took this topic more seriously

Irreversible Damage (to the reader). This is just complete Garbage.

Very important book. This is an incredibly important and prescient book. This book broaches a very “touchy” subject, one for which you will likely be attacked for having an opinion that deviates in any way from the approved opinion of the woke police. However, this topic and book deserves to be read as part of polite discourse and debate, if for no other reason than to have a fuller understanding of the reality of the situation in its entirety. Nothing is ever so black and white. Stop cancelling people who may have a differing opinion from your own. Open your mind, develop better critical thinking skills, and learn to think for yourself. Read this book.
