One Last Step (A Tara Mills Mystery—Book One) by Sarah Sutton Book Summary

ONE LAST STEP (A Tara Mills Mystery—Book One) is the debut novel in a new FBI mystery series by debut author Sarah Sutton.

Two hikers go missing along the Appalachian Trail, leaving only a bloodstained forest behind them, and when another hiker collapses on someone’s porch in New Hampshire, murdered by crossbow, the local police realize they have a serial killer on their hands––and need to call in the FBI.

FBI Agent Tara Mills is young, brilliant and new to the force. With a promising career in front of her, she faces the ultimate test when she is assigned the case. It soon proves to be more challenging than she ever could have imagined––an impossible riddle that leaves even her seasoned partner stumped.

Meanwhile, something about the case stirs a darkness within her––a tortured past that even her long-term boyfriend doesn’t fully understand. As nightmares consume her, she only hopes that her past will not come back to ruin her once again.

As more hikers go missing, and with her job on the line, Tara finds herself on a race against time as she combs through the forest’s trails. Peeling back each layer, she soon realizes that she is up against a true diabolical mastermind. And just when she thinks she has it all figured out, her instincts lead her to the most shocking truth of all.

Book #2 in the series––ONE LAST BREATH––is also now available!

One last step. Sappy and unfulfilling ending.

Thrilling!. This was a really exciting read that had me hooked right away. FBI agent Tara is dealing with past trauma, while working a deadly case, involving presumed murdered hikers on the Appalachian Trail, as a new agent. She is partnered with an experienced agent, Warren. But they have to learn to lean on each other to solve the case.

I hate inconsistency. Don’t write that the phone was crushed and then get an important call on it.

Great read. Love the storyline and plot. Well written.

Captivating Story. I couldn’t stop reading it once I started.

Good book. Enjoyed the suspense

Formulaic & Typos. Story itself is ok, if not formulaic. Lots of typos & errors.

Good read. She has a wonderful “voice”. Suspenseful

murder triller. I loved this book, because it looks played like a movie in my mind . I loved the ending , if this horror book were a movie I’d 100% go see it .

Love it. Very entertaining !!

Enjoyment!. I like this book because it kept me wanting to turn pages until the very end. Tara Mills is who I wanted to be when I was a kid. She’s tough, polite, questions herself, believes in herself, and gets the job done! I liked the fact that her partner was put in his place by not trusting her instinct. I think it is a lesson he won’t forget anytime soon. I look forward to continuing her saga.

But I don’t think. I was supposed you but I’m

Good fast read. Good flow with many twists. A little disappointing during the climax. Too many bad decisions made. Once through window jump on the gun. Shoot the villain and his mom.

Outstanding!. This novel is a great example of story telling. I really like the depth of the character Tara. Her deep seated frailty and the strength of her will and determination.

Scarred and a rogue. A new FBI agent suffers from nightmares about her mother’s death and panic attacks. She is on her first case defying rules and regulations as she follows her instincts to catch a serial killer. Will her experienced partner help her? Will her panic attacks jeopardize her ability to function under intense pressure?

Promising Plot but . . .. But the writing needs polishing and some study of FBI procedures. The idea that only two agents would be assigned to a critical investigation and that they’d have to meet a tight schedule strikes me as unlikely.

One last step. Very enjoyable.

Interesting. It keeps you wondering if the killer would be caught.

No opinion. Keeps one's interest. Sadly today's books always continue so one wants to read the next one. That can be annoying especially for older readers who grew up with each book snd movie finished. We do id not have 1, 2 and 3. Otherwise it is well written. Hi

One Last Step. Great read very suspenseful. Love reading how they get into the minds of criminals and sometimes figure how they work.

ONE LAST STEP. Loved it! Couldn’t put the book away...I was enamored! Can’t wait to read the second book...

One Last Step. I enjoyed this thriller very much. It definitely had a fast pace with good character development. The one thing that puzzled me was when the author had the FBI leaving before they found the people taken.

One Last Step. Really awesome read fast paced but good character description. Will read more by this author. Will recommend them to others. Thanks k

Tedious. Tedious. So many pages to say one paragraph. I don’t know about this author but I’d guess they are very very young. As for the characters, neurosis comes to mind which doesn’t ring so true for an fbi agent. Neither had much going for them personality wise or other. I skipped through more pages than I read.

Page Turner. Very good mystery right to the very end!

One Last Step. This book was fantastic! I could not put it down. Near the end I was anxious as to what was going to happen. Very good book with great characters. Look forward to reading more by Sarah Sutton.

Poor read. Plot was so predictable and unrealistic. Characters were one dimensional and you never felt a like or dislike for any of them. Tara should have been terminated for her actions. She has no business being an FBI agent. After all those year of therapy, she still relives the past. Now she believes in dreams. No way would I put myself through the torture of reading another one of her books.

Great Mystery/Thriller especially for a slow reader. I have always loved mysteries/crime books, but am such a slow reader. I’ve had 2 paperback mystery books that were recommended to me that I’ve been trying to read for 2 years and never finished. I got this app for a beach vacation and got this book and read it in 3 days. I could not stop reading it. It was very thrilling and suspenseful. An easy read. A lot of books I’ve read tend to put too much detail into the small irrelevant things and this book was not like that. Told you everything you needed to know about the characters and got right to the point. Always kept you guessing. Amazing!

Listen to me,. I had a hard time trying to find a way to describe this book. Very different from most books in my library but it is very well written. There is more I can say but you really do need to read the book so you. An agree with my review!

Well Paced Book. I enjoyed this book. This is the first book I have read in this genre and was not disappointed. I will definitely be reading the 2nd and 3rd in this series.

One Last Step. Hiking in the woods will never feel safe again!

One last step. Like it was a great mystery

One last step. Very interesting and keeps your attention. I read this book in one day. I plan to read the next in the series soon.

One Last Breath. I loved your book. It kept me interested to the end. I especially liked the twists and turns. Keep up the great work.

Definitely Page Turner. Love the cat & mouse suspense in this book. The characters were great too. I had to continue to read more of it & couldn’t stop. Highly recommend to add to your reading list.

A good mystery starting book. Good book, but it gets a bit boring after thay catch the second guy who is incident

Great mystery. Loved this mystery couldn’t put it down. Read it all in one day.

Read this story!. Find a comfortable spot. Be ready to stay there for awhile. Once you pass a few pages, the story will move like a freight train upon which, you cannot depart!

Loved it!. Great plot, characters, and conclusion!

Easy Read. It was easy and a quick read. I thought she could put a little more reality into the politics of establishing position. I loved the details.

Nice Mystery. I really enjoyed the buildup. The mystery behind the main character. Hopefully the other characters get more meat in the backstory in the next book. Pacing was good, Boyfriends is too...soft? Idk, he’s kinda whiny then overly apologetic. Very interested in what her repressed memory brought up.

Love it !!!. I’m the type of person who doesn’t like to read, but this book got me hooked up I really love it, I highly recommend this book.

One Last Step.. JUST LOVED ALL ABOUT THIS BOOK. GREAT NEW AUTHOR! GONNA KEEP ON WITH TARA AND WARREN❗️❣️

One last step. It was hard to stop reading it when I needed to go to sleep. I couldn’t wait to read more. Now I have to buy the others!

Too much a heroine. First time I read this author. The heroine, Tara, was lionized. Predictable that she would ride off to save the day while disobeying her superiors and then they would fall over themselves saying they were sorry. Tease regarding her father was pretty blatant attempt to set up a “fugitive “ plot line for the second and subsequent books.

Disappointing Read. I couldn’t make myself like the main character.

Title is good. The story is good it kept me going. But… it’s not believable. I found myself rolling my eyes. First off the FBI would not let a new agent take the lead. The story would have been better had the senior agent led as should be. It would have made the story better more believable. The author jumped the gun here trying to make Tara a great agent too soon. However kudos to the author for keeping me wanting to read the next book to find out who actually killed her mother.

Awesome Book. This is a great read. I didn’t want to put it down. It didn’t take long to get me intrigued on what would happen next. I haven’t read an entire book in a long time. I can’t wait to read the next one!

One Last Step. Really good. Liked it a lot.

Excellent story.. Well thought out and written. Full of suspense and quality writing.

One last step. Great story Sarah Sutton. I found myself holding my breath more especially near the end. I’ve read this book before in the past and it is just as powerful reading the second time

Couldn’t stop reading!. Great read. Some grammatical errors but kept me tied to my seat! Can’t wait for the second book to be released.

One last step. Fascinating and scary

Couldn’t put it down. Fast moving, full of twists & suspense. I can’t wait to read more cases with Tara.

Great Read. Enjoyed this book and the twists and turns of the plot.

excellent. Excellent!!

That Phone. I enjoyed it but there is a logic problem with her phone, and a few typos

... ..

Too silly. The author needs to go out to discover how adults talk and think. Honestly this was so silly. The FBI agent on her first case solves it, while her partner who has been in the business for decades doesn’t have a clue. So many things just too ridiculous. As if they’d be feeling “defeated” after being on the job for less than 48 hours. As if police wouldn’t have recognised the logo of the Sunset B&B. The woman gets whacked over the head with a spade, kicked in the face, has her arm sliced open, punched and kicked in a fight, but hey, let’s pretend none of that happened and she is as right as rain, except her incredible (in the true meaning of the word) boyfriend has to help her twirl her pasta. Not to mention her partner who was shot in the shoulder isn’t even admitted to hospital. Dear god, how does this rubbish get published?

Suspenseful and well written. I read this book in two sessions. I couldn’t put it down. Suspenseful with lots of twists to the story. Highly recommend.

A non stop read. Great characters, great plot with lots of action. A great read.

Great read. Great short read. The last few chapters were intense - keeps readers guessing.

Engrossing and thought provoking. A good read. Builds the main character Tara further into her career as an FBI agent. Leaves the reader wanting more.

One last step. Mills almost got herself & partner killed. This book would have been better with less self doubt. It consumed too much of the book. Took away from the story

One Step. A quick easy read but not challenging at all. The author is building the base for continuing series. Some good action at the end.

AWFUL. A hackneyed storyline, limp transparent characters, and most inexcusable, no gift with prose. Stilted, contradictory, descriptions remind one of acceptable grade eight literature class writing.

Thoroughly enjoyable.. Each subsequent lead was followed through; no strings left hanging or unanswered for. Strong female lead , intelligent conversation, great characters. An excellent read

One last step. Very good.suspenseful along with a great plot. The author kept me interested throughout the book. A good and surprising ending.

Wonderful read. Wrought with suspense A fantastic read
