One Foot in the Grave by Denise Grover Swank Book Summary

The third book in the USA Today bestselling Carly Moore series by Denise Grover Swank.

The dead can’t speak

After months of living in the Smoky Mountains town of Drum, Tennessee, Carly knows firsthand the financial hardship the citizens face. Still, she can’t muster the same excitement as everyone else when town patriarch Bart Drummond breaks ground on his new resort that promises more jobs and money.
But the project comes to a screeching halt when the construction crew unearths a grisly discovery—an unmarked grave. The discovery threatens Carly’s ex-boyfriend, when the authorities learn the body belongs to his old girlfriend who had supposedly left town…and Wyatt is suspect number one.
Carly’s sure Wyatt’s innocent, even if the rest of the town, and more importantly, the sheriff’s department, is ready to lock him up. Carly has moved on from Wyatt, but now he’s asking for her help to clear his name. In exchange, he’ll tell her what he knows about his father. Information that will help her bring Bart down.
But danger lurks around every corner, and as Carly puts her life on the line to help the man who betrayed her, she begins to question everything and everyone around her…especially Wyatt Drummond.

If these bones could talk. This is the third book in the Carly Moore series. Time line wise, taking place a few months after the events of the second book. So far, this may be my favorite of the series. It has an overall feel closer to the first book that I enjoyed much more than book two. The plot moves effortlessly and provides much needed answers as to what really happened to cause the riff between Wyatt and his family. Carly does continue to poke her nose into all sorts of things, but she goes about it in a smarter way this time around. Little hints are dropped that there may be more going on in Drum than Carly realized. Perhaps even things that Wyatt has tried to protect her from. I was happy to have more of Wyatt in this book and I think Carly is starting to realize that he has kept secretes for a reason. Marco has become even more of a fixture in Carly’s life and is edging to have more with her. I enjoyed the dynamic between Carly and Marco, even if I don’t want him as a love interest. It was also good to have a revisit with Hank, Max, Lula, Bingham & Ruth. I look forward to see how Carly’s story will progress in the next book.

Ahhhhmazing!. This book had me all over the place, I loved every bit of it. It had such great sentiment throughout and even brought a few tears to my eyes. Carly has to make so many tough decisions and I feel like she has really grown in this book. Very impressed and impatiently waiting for the next book in this series!

Page turner. Denise does it again!! What a great read. I love Carly’s story. I’m always anxious for the next book. I spent all my free time reading this.

Great Addition to the Series!. Another well told story by DGS with tons of mystery and suspense, but interweaved with action, humor, and friendship! I am loving the town of Drum, TN and all of the characters in it. Carly has found a real gem; not only with the townspeople, but all the secrets in this town left to be unraveled. In book 3 of Carly’s series, she’s back to investigating, but this time it’s to help Wyatt. I love that she’s so willing to go to bat for friends and people she feels are innocent. We get to learn a little more about Wyatt’s past, which I think does help you understand some of how he became the man he is today. Carly has always been a tough cookie, but I love getting to watch her continue to grow and kick butt! Marco is back again to help Carly investigate and I just adore their friendship. Bring me all the Marco! I also adore the kinship that has formed between Hank and Carly. It just really gets me in the feels and I even teared up a bit in one of their convos. I can’t wait to see what’s to come in the next book and discover more secrets! You don’t want to miss out on Carly’s series!

Amazing!. I fell in love with Rose’s world and that led me to fall in love with Carly’s. Denise is an amazing writer who can create worlds that we so desire to be apart of. We relate to the characters, become attached to them and enjoy each book that is released.

Such a nail biter!!!. Another amazing DGS book! Carly is just amazing and she is so intelligent. I love how every emotion she goes through, you can just feel. There’s so many layers and so many twists and turns that you can’t put it down because you might miss something. This book was such a nail biter and I definitely did not guess the ending. If you want an amazing book that just captivates you, definitely read this series

Keeps Getting Better!. I’m absolutely loving this series! The deeper I read into Carly’s world, the more it’s starting to feel like home. One Foot in the Grave is a fantastic story with an even better mystery that begins when a body is dug up at the construction site of Bart Drummond’s new resort. Wyatt asks Carly for help in order to clear his name as the main suspect in this new murder case. Drummond family secrets are uncovered, and we gain new insight through the eyes of Emily, while Carly gathers information to help bring down Bart. Carly starts to stand up for herself, gains a new found confidence, and is a force to be reckoned with. This series is evolving into something so special, and each book is always full of action, dark secrets, and amazing character growth and development!

Wonderful book. Denise knocked it out of the park again. This book pulls you in from the start. It keeps you in your toes trying to figure out the mystery and it pulls on your heart strings with the relationships being built. I don’t want to give any spoilers but team Marco all the way! I’m excited to see how Carly’s story progresses.

Carly book 3. Carly is investigating again but this time it’s to help Wyatt, her ex, and the mini mystery is just as great as the last book! I love seeing how these characters grow and evolve and the main mystery story just keeps getting better! I can’t say much in detail or it’ll ruin it. I’ll just say that Bart and his wife, Emily continue to play key roles in the lives of Drum residents. If you haven’t read book 1, then start there before reading this one. I already preordered the next book from the link at the end. I love this series and can’t wait for more!

My Review. Cause...that’s what it is. So yep.. I see all of these incredibly long reviews, and, of course, your girl isn’t much of a writer. So, my apologies, this will most likely be short and full of grammatical errors... This book is very captivating, and somehow captures the story in such a way, it seems as if almost...familiar....as if to be a distant dream....or nightmare....it is very enthralling, and it is certainly deserving of its high ratings. I do believe it sometimes is hard to keep track of what’s going on, but once you revive, it yet again becomes a captivating thriller that will make you hear bumps in the night. It’s I genuinely written, and has a good plot and ending. The ending is satisfying yet leaves off at some sort of...well....cliffhanger. It’s hard to explain, so I suggest you read it yourself! You’ll make many connections and learn many...odd things. The scariest thing will be yourself. The saddest thing will be the crack in a voice before they cry. The most anxious thing will be the whole book. Odd yet so very remarkable. I’ve written a lot more than I expected to at ten twenty p.m. but I’m not one to complain! Well, see you on the other side of the grave, friend!

Give me MORE of Carly Moore!!! ;). These books get better and better. I love that we are still learning things about each character. The character development in ANY DGS book is fantastic so no surprise here that Bingham and Lula give me all the heart eyes. Wyatt needing Carly’s hell was very conflicting, but I’m glad she agrees to help. I love that Marco and Hank are still around I LOVE Hank!! Wyatt is being accused of murder, and the victim was quite the surprise to me!! And the killer? I was shocked and you will be too! Knowing that we have another Carly book coming has me ecstatic!! Counting down the days until the next release. Of course I’ll be reading it and I’m just as sure that I will love it as well. Never any complaints with a book by DGS. Her writing to me is pure genius, I’d read her grocery lists! Don’t miss out on this masterpiece!

Classic DGS Mystery. I enjoyed the latest in the Carly Moore series. What I love is that I really get to escape and feel like I am in that tiny town in the mountains whenever I’m reading these books. I also love that Carly was a teacher, even though she had to give it up, she finds her way back .... I appreciate how her relationship with Marco is developing slowly and deeply in contrast to the way it started with a bang in the first book. The complexity of the characters around her keeps it interesting. And most of all I love that there’s more to the book than just romance, but just enough to fuel my romantic side. Keep them coming, DGS!

I love Carly. Denise never fails to bring an amazing story to her fans. When Carly is approached to investigate the murder of the body found at a construction site, it’s up to her to figure out the last days of the victim. With more questions than answers she’s knows she’s playing with Fire. This is the highly anticipated 3rd book from Denise Grover Swank in the Carly Moore series. Denise did not disappoint in bringing suspense and humor to her characters.

Carly is back with all the twisty mystery Denise does so well!. Fans of Denise Grover Swank know she is a master storyteller. Her characters are layered with strength, flaws and complex relationships. This third book in the Carly Moore series keeps the reader on the edge of her seat for this fantastic ride. Trouble seems to find Carly Moore. Even while trying to lay low in Drum, Tennessee she has been pulled into solving multiple mysteries. Carly one feisty woman who believes in finding the truth. She stands up for those she believes in. This time she is helping her former boyfriend Wyatt Drummond. Although she and Wyatt are no longer together, she wants to make sure he isn't framed for a crime he didn't commit. Regardless of the danger this investigation may involve, Carly refuses to back down and her sleuthing skills uncover some interesting answers. During her time in Drum, Carly has gotten to know many of the locals and uses her connections to further her quest for answers. One thing she has learned is there is a lot of game playing and Carly is tired of the games. With each page of this story the suspense builds, the plot twists and the ending astonishes. Each book in this series is better than the previous and I am already eagerly awaiting book four. I highly recommend this story and the entire series.

So Much Mystery You’ll Need More!. In this latest installment of the Carly Moore series, Carly has more on her hands than just trying to bring Bart Drummond to his knees. Wyatt comes to Carly asking for help to clear his name when he becomes the number one suspect after they dig up the body of his ex-girlfriend from nine years ago. And on land that is legally deemed Bart Drummonds but boarded on Bingham’s land, to boot! Heather Stone was one complicated woman to say the least. Carly doesn’t go on this investigation on her own, she has the help of her best friend Marco, while Wyatt stays in the shadows and eventually in hiding. Each lead that Carly and Marco run into, opens up several more questions every time. The townsfolk don’t like Carly digging into the past, they don’t want their secrets uncovered and they often get leery of saying more. That often being due to Marco being a deputy sheriff, which gives them several obstacles along the way. Eventually you find out the truth of what happened to Heather all those years ago, when things come to a head at the end of the book. I always love the last 20% of DGS books because they’re so action packed where you can’t put the book down and you have to read as fast as you can to get answers. Some of which are a bit surprising, which also is a natural thing when it comes to a DGS book. I feel Book Three in the Carly Moore series makes you want more. While you get some of your questions answered, you pile up a list of more questions and mystery that leaves you wanting the next installment sooner than later! I don’t feel like everything will be wrapped up in just one book, so I’m hoping there is at least two more books. And while I was hoping for a certain romance to happen, I’m holding out hope that we see some more romance in the next book that’ll make my heart happy... but as long as Carly is happy with her choice, that’ll make me happy. My curiosity is peaked to say the least though, and I can’t wait to read what happens next to Carly and her new found family in Drum, Tennessee.

Excellent gripping mystery!. I’m utterly flabbergasted with the amount of talent that Denise Grover Swank brings to the table. This third installment of the Carly Moore series literally blew my mind. The storyline was thick with tension on all kinds of levels. Drum TN is steep with secrets and it seems like everyone’s got one. There was no way I could put this book down because I had to know what was going to happen next. Carly develops into such an amazing character. I found myself raising my fist in solidarity of her conviction to shed the girl she was and embrace the strong willed, fiercely independent woman she’s become. She’s made a family of her own with Hank and her handful of close friends. The people of Drum have taken notice of her since she arrived and are starting to accept her more by treating her less like an outsider. While I still think Wyatt is a good man, I just don’t think he’s good enough for our girl Carly. Now Marco has me all up in my feels! We get a little more backstory from him and I feel like he truly understands Carly better and appreciates her more. I love their bond and how they’re both supportive of each other. Even though I was hoping they would take a chance on each other, I’m also glad that Carly isn’t rushing into anything. I was also glad to see my favorite seniors make an appearance and they did not disappoint! I can only hope to be as ornery as Gladys and Roberta when I grow up. I highly recommend this book if you love a gripping mystery mixed with a bit of humor and a pinch of romance. I’m anxiously looking forward to what other secrets the little town of Drum TN reveals to Carly and if they will bring her closer to her goals of bringing down Bart Drummond once and for all. Or, will her secret be revealed first.

New secrets to reveal and oh boy we got drama!. And we are back in Drum, Tennessee, time has passed since book 2. It's been a few months since Lula's drama and things with Wyatt... well things are still not good. The resort that was hinted before is now being constructed, which means more foot traffic at Max's bar and overall more jobs for the town and everyone is happy about it... except Carly since the man behind the project is no other than Bart Drummond and she is determined to see him dethroned. But everything comes to a screeching halt when they discover some buried bones on site. When it's known that the bones belong to no other than Wyatt's ex-girlfriend who supposedly left town before he went to jail and he is now a suspect. Even if things are still not even amicable between Carly and him, she is sure of his innocence, so when he asks for her help is a no-brainer. He offers her truths in return, which are like currency in Drum, so she decides to investigate. I have to be completely honest here, this wasn't my favorite but please do hear me out. Denise is an amazing writer, I really felt like I was reliving a real person recount of her life story. The story itself was well written and well developed. I think this book gives us a new perspective about Wyatt, Marco, and especially Bart's wife. She was a surprise, to say the least, and I think she is going to play major plot twits in the future and I looking forward to it. With all that being said... I just hated the things that happen and mostly how I felt like we got no resolution, I mean yes, we get to know who the killer is and the whys, what and how, but still everything else it's out in the open with BIG question marks. I think in the end we got 1 solution for at least 10 more mysteries to solve. And I'm sorry I do have to say this (trying not to give too much away but...) I get that labels are scary, especially if we consider Carly's situation, but I mean if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck I refuse to call it anything else even if she is not ready to admit it yet. I'm really looking forward to next book and if I can get picky, can we get to the loving? Mama needs some sugar!

5 stars doesn’t do it justice.... .. and no star rating could. When this new spin off series from the Rose Gardner mysteries came out, I wasn’t sure if it could compete. I’m a huge fan of all books Denise, but the Rose Gardner series has been my favorite (of all time) for years now. Carly seemed meek in those books and barely noticeable (which is not at all the case now). The character development has been magnificent, as I’ve grown to love Carly as much as Rose. I might even love her more, now that she has become such a strong and independent woman who doesn’t take crap from anyone. We could all use a friend like Carly in real life. But enough about all that, go read the freaking books already. You won’t regret it- I can assure you. ☺️

One foot in the grave. 3rd in the Carly Moore series. Once a dead body is found at the construction site. Her ex Wyatt is accused of murder. She is set on helping prove her ex’s innocence. She will stop at nothing to help find the truth putting her in harms way & losing trust in others along the way.

Amazing Story Continues!. 4.5 Stars- Carly Moore’s story continues in Drum, TN busy as ever waitressing at the Tavern and now investigating a body found. The author does an awesome job on catching you up on the back story so you don’t feel lost. Whether this is the first book in the series you pick up or it has been awhile since you read the previous one, you get the idea without it being redundant. I love seeing where Carly’s life leads her. Her family she found here, Hank, makes your heart melt on how protective and caring he is for her. The friendships she creates with so many in town including Marco. Carly and Wyatt have been broken up for a few months when Wyatt’s ex-girlfriend’s body is found. Guess who the main suspect would be? Carly tries to get past her recent heartbreak and help Wyatt stay out of jail while trying to NOT become like the ex-gf...by being six foot under. I was very excited to get to finally learn of some of Wyatt’s secrets. I felt torn at times, part of me angry with him, other part my heart breaking. The suspense and uncertainty on how their relationship will turn out, trying to keep Wyatt from going to jail as well as the danger Carly was putting herself in kept me on the edge of my seat. With this book I felt like more answers to the puzzle are slowly revealing even though I end up asking more questions on what will happen next for the overall grand picture. I wouldn’t say it is necessarily a cliffhanger but it does make you not want to wait for the next book. This was exciting, intriguing, a little heart wrenching, but as usual it was an overall great story.

Oh, why did it end<3. I tried to limit my self to only reading so much a day to make the book last. I love Carly and her complicated love life. This book is so so good! Please give Carly mysteries a chance. It’s very worth it! I love the ending. Marco boy you are a good one Carly is very lucky. This book is full of twist and turns. I don’t believe you can fully predict what is going to happen and that’s what I love so much about this book and Denise’s books in general. Great book & great series.

Great book!. I loved this mystery, I couldn’t put the book down! As always DGS does not disappoint. I can’t wait for the next release in October 2020!

More Intrigue. By now you should know Carly pretty well a sweet and charming fearless woman with tunnel vision for justice. She gets a few new additions to her life in this book which means added responsibility. As always there is a great mystery to solve and team Marly gets to the bottom of some corruption. This book is far more intriguing to me than the others. After reading the book I wonder if Carly hasn’t opened up a whole other can of worms that we didn’t know existed, and quite possibly one foot in the grave. We won’t know for sure until the next book.

Carly never disappoints. I love reading through Carly’s perspective. I love her relationships with Hank and Marco. Please give us more!

In love. I cannot put these books down in this series! Denise has such a way with words and I’m totally obsessed!!! Amazing amazing read!!!

Disappointed. I love Denise Grover Swank books. Usually I can’t put them down and stay up all night to finish. This is the first book I didn’t enjoy. I won’t let any spoiler out but I just felt like this book was pointless. All the hype and then it just fizzles out. I also feel like I keep reading the same book over and over. There’s a mystery that need solved, our heroine works to solve it, she runs in to trouble, gets rescued and it’s tied up in the final chapter. I wish there would have been more clues to the bigger mystery, what Carly will do about her dad. I just don’t know where this series is leading. It sure doesn’t hold my attention like the Rose books do!! I guess you win some and you loose some, this was a loose for me but it won’t stop me from ordering the next book lol!!

One Foot in the Grave. Denise Grover Swank has out done herself and she just keeps getting better! I hate to sound cliche but One Foot in the Grave is Action packed! Captivating! Intriguing! Page turner! Suspenseful! Unpredictable! Nail biting! These are ways to describe the third book in the Carly Moore series. Carly is on a duel mission to find out who killed Wyatts ex-girlfriend, Heather and to prevent a miscarriage of justice when Wyatt is wanted for her murder. Her adventure takes us on a journey of danger, entanglements and self discovery. This is Denise at her best! I voluntarily received an ARC for an honest review.
