28 Summers by Elin Hilderbrand Book Summary

A "captivating and bittersweet" novel by the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Summer of '69: Their secret love affair has lasted for decades—but this could be the summer that changes everything (People).

When Mallory Blessing's son, Link, receives deathbed instructions from his mother to call a number on a slip of paper in her desk drawer, he's not sure what to expect. But he certainly does not expect Jake McCloud to answer. It's the late spring of 2020 and Jake's wife, Ursula DeGournsey, is the frontrunner in the upcoming Presidential election.

There must be a mistake, Link thinks. How do Mallory and Jake know each other?

Flash back to the sweet summer of 1993: Mallory has just inherited a beachfront cottage on Nantucket from her aunt, and she agrees to host her brother's bachelor party. Cooper's friend from college, Jake McCloud, attends, and Jake and Mallory form a bond that will persevere—through marriage, children, and Ursula's stratospheric political rise—until Mallory learns she's dying.

Based on the classic film Same Time Next Year (which Mallory and Jake watch every summer), 28 Summers explores the agony and romance of a one-weekend-per-year affair and the dramatic ways this relationship complicates and enriches their lives, and the lives of the people they love.

Meh. Just ok

Having a political cake and eating it too. I liked the main characters, I liked the references to real people and places- at first. Then I felt a little pandered to as a white woman. When real-life events, places and people were particularly significant and controversial in a particular year, they were written out of history even though we were very much thinking and talking about them in our real lives. This is strange, given one of the main characters is a politician. Too bad.

Very disappointing. Not a very good storyline. What made it worse is she felt the need to get political towards the end of the story. I do not purchase these books to read about your political views.

👇. Probably the most adolescent book I’ve read since teen-age years.

28 Summers. Cooper is the best brother to have. Fray and Mallory should married and lived happily ever after. Leland was always jealous of Mallory, it just took so long for Mallory to figure it out. Jake wanted it all, he was weak, a successful wife and a once a year fun time, he could have left Ursula before it even started, he and Ursula had parted ways before Jake made the first trip to Nantucket. It’s fast easy to read but predictable.

Awesome. I literally could not put this book down. I stayed up all night and the next day. I read all of her books and love them all but this one has been my favorite by far. I’m so sad it’s over. There has never been a better story for me and that is saying so much 5 Stars

Loved it. Such a sweet book. I wish the story would continue…. The ending left it open for a continuation!!!! I want to know what happens to the kids!!! Love reading her books. She creates true to life characters that I think about when I’m not reading about them! Which book is next???

A must read this summer!!. Like a warm summer breeze this book will put you in the right mood from page one. Do yourself a favor and read it!

Loved it! Easy beach read. Good story

My new favorite book!. Such a great beach read!

Not so good.. When a book doesn’t keep me interested, I tend to speed read and skip a lot. In this case, I don’t think I missed anything. The location backdrop was beautiful but the point of the book was boring and sad and worst of all, very predictable. I kept hoping that it would get better, but it didn’t and it ended so abruptly that I was left sort of frustrated. Love her books but not this one.

Amazing. You deff need to read this book. The romance in it is to die for

28 Summers. Good, but terribly sad and gut wrenching. The waiting…the lives of two people who find true happiness and love for only 3 days each year…

28 summers. The best book I’ve read it a long time. Couldn’t put it down. Touching and funny. Makes one realize how quickly time passes and that we have to make the most of it!

Did Elin Hilderbrand really write this?. I’m usually a huge fan. Hate the story(years of cheating) and all the parentheses with other people’s thoughts. A woman who won’t stand up for herself and says she’s worth more than a weekend for years is not a good heroine.

28 Summers. Although extremely frustrating at times, this was a wonderful book. I could not put it down.

It was okay.... I loved reading l the paradise series by Elin. So I thought this was the next perfect book. There was not enough in the story of Jake and Mallory. I guess I wanted/needed more. Very predictable book.

Disappointing. How many trite cliches can you fit into each scene.

A must Read. This book will have you on the edge of your seat ❤️🕶📕

Beautiful ending. Reasonably well-written with an intricate, yet playful plot

Great. Wonderful story I love her books

Outstanding.. Beautiful. Long term devotion & a heartbreaking ending. Modeled after the play Same Time, Next Year.

Loved until the end. I love Ellin Hilderbrands work. Her books are engaging with well developed characters and just the right amount of details in the story development. This book has an interning use of key words used to set the timeline at the begins of each chapter. This treatment really resonated with me. It put me right into the time period. The relationships of characters took me on a roller coaster ride of emotions; happy, sad, passionate, devastated, lagging, and crying. This book was so easy to read I flew through it in a matter of days. I loved every page until the last. Although I absolutely loved the book — it was not my favorite ending.

Didn’t want it to end. If I could have made this love story and book last a lifetime I would have! The best book I have EVER read!

A Heartbreaking Story that pulls you in from the start. This feels like a Nicholas Sparks story but told well from a woman’s perspective. Elin Hildebrand does a beautiful job creating the characters on the backdrop of Nantucket. Her writing makes you feel like your watching the novel play out through a boat window. It’s sad and happy and much like what life is. It will make you cry if you’ve experienced some of these life events. Good quick read.

Skip This Book. If I wasn’t on vacation and desperate for a book to read I wouldn’t have finished.

Easy read. Great read! Ended abruptly!

Engrossing, a new take on an old theme. Full disclosure: I love the movie Same Time Next Year, so I might have been predisposed to love this book. I appreciated how the author integrated the parallels to the classic movie into her work to a degree. I also liked how she provided some pop-cultural context each year. Though admittedly, some characters are richer than others, the author gets you vested in their lives. One is reminded that people are complicated, sometimes surprising. Above all else, life takes some interesting and unexpected turns. This is a great beach chair read. But wear sunscreen because it’s hard to put down.

Take me away….. This book immerses you in another woman’s life…the ordinary, the extraordinary and the sublime! On a rare occasion, I do not want a book to end…this is one of those times!

Loved it!. Smart! Captivating story - Couldn’t put it down! Great summer read. I’ll look for this author again.

Not one of her best. I did not like this book at all.

A new favorite 🥰. A beautiful love story, I can't stop thinking about it

She does it again!. EH is one if my favorite authors and this one does not disappoint. Loved the story of Mallory and her life.

This book will stay with me for along time .. 28 Summers blew me away. I couldn’t put it down. A must read .

No good. Bad

Summer Reading. Love this one!

Amazing. I couldn’t stop reading this book, it was an amazing escape! The ending made me feel love but also breaks my heart. Thank you for writing this.

Great book and definitely a page turner. This book made me want to be in Nantucket the whole time. I could practically smell the ocean while reading this book. I could hardly put the book down, I was so intrigued by Mal and her life. While I wished to see her end up with Jake, sometimes the endings we least expect make the best endings. A wonderful book with great detail and beautiful writing.

Fun summer read. This was not my favorite Hilderbrand book but still worth reading.

28 Summers - best story so far...... Such a moving, enjoyable, funny, sad story. Loved all the characters and was not able to put the book down. I can not wait for Nantucket’s next installment. Elin’s writing is magical.

Just bad. Zero character development, zero insight, the drama is surface level, and no conflict or growth. I feel like these are all robots. Could have been 12-15 summers and added a lot more depth and direction but no. That’s not at all what this book was.

Can we live on love just 3 days out of the year?. This story makes it seem possible. Good story line and characters, I would strongly suggest this book to readers of all ages!

Amazing to the end.. Couldn’t put it down! My emotions were all over the place

This might be my favorite!!. Could not put this one down!

Disappointed. I found the book depressing. It does keep the reader interested; however, the supporting characters are despicable. Of course one is a politician and a couple of others represent the elite class and, in today’s environment, this is the new normal.

Repetitive. 28 summers - imagine a summer romance with the same people doing the same things - just way too repetitive and never really delivers

Loved it. It was a sad story and very good. I thought it was well written and could happen in real life. A great vacation book to read. I couldn’t put it down.

Grabs your heart. You just feel so tender and loving towards the characters. Truly a great book. I enjoyed how it went through the years and through time and how well it laid it out but also quickly and it feel like just fillers fill in the time.

28 summers too long. Woof. What an unlikeable cast of characters. They became so unbearable I couldn’t finish it. Mallory and Jake are absolute losers. Overall the plot just started to become repetitive nonsense and the narrative choices were confusing. I should have stopped after summer #1

One of My Favorites!. This review contains a spoiler~ I always love how Elin name-drops in her stories! She gives her readers wonderful recipes, top fashion designs, trendy restaurants, and beautiful vacation destinations worth researching. 28 Summers excels here as well! As for the storyline, the ending caused big tears to well up and spill down my face. It is so sad....However, I am so thankful that Elin left Mallory’s “transition” up to the reader to imagine. She spared us by not using words to describe the physical pain, the gut-wrenching loss, the what-now. Once again, Elin, an awesome story. ricecho 3/1/21
