With four starred reviews, Angeline Boulley's debut novel, Firekeeper's Daughter, is a groundbreaking YA thriller about a Native teen who must root out the corruption in her community, perfect for readers of Angie Thomas and Tommy Orange.

Eighteen-year-old Daunis Fontaine has never quite fit in, both in her hometown and on the nearby Ojibwe reservation. She dreams of a fresh start at college, but when family tragedy strikes, Daunis puts her future on hold to look after her fragile mother. The only bright spot is meeting Jamie, the charming new recruit on her brother Levi’s hockey team.

Yet even as Daunis falls for Jamie, she senses the dashing hockey star is hiding something. Everything comes to light when Daunis witnesses a shocking murder, thrusting her into an FBI investigation of a lethal new drug.

Reluctantly, Daunis agrees to go undercover, drawing on her knowledge of chemistry and Ojibwe traditional medicine to track down the source. But the search for truth is more complicated than Daunis imagined, exposing secrets and old scars. At the same time, she grows concerned with an investigation that seems more focused on punishing the offenders than protecting the victims.

Now, as the deceptions—and deaths—keep growing, Daunis must learn what it means to be a strong Anishinaabe kwe (Ojibwe woman) and how far she’ll go for her community, even if it tears apart the only world she’s ever known.

Amazing!. This book was absolutely incredible! The story arc is amazing, the characters are well written! It is one of my favorite books so far in 2022!!

Strong. This book is a reminder that indigenous women are strong. We will conquer all obstacles and protect the ones we love on the way. A great read and reminder.

An incredible portrait of a strong young woman battling for her community. Daunis lives in this story, sharing the Seven Grandfathers and some of the complicated heartbreak when drugs enter a community.

Great Book. Being an indigenous woman, this book was well written and inspires us to have courage to protect our lifeways and get rid of drugs and their pestilence on our people.

Amazing. Love the book has a good amount of romance you entertain and it has a good amount of mystery kind of

Fabulous. Loved the book and the story of Daunis. Wish the end wasn’t so rushed and compacted. Please please write a sequel.

Wonderful story. I love this book. It captures the crux of walking in two worlds, both culturally and historically along with the challenges of identity among being mixed blood or not born on a reservation. I could barely put it down.

Great read. Great read. I hated that it ended.

A thrilling and profound experience.. I could not put this book down and turned pages until it came to the end. There is so much wisdom between these pages even in those that hold sorrow. Truly beautifully written.

Strong YA Debut!. Firekeeper’s Daughter not only has a beautiful cover, it has a rich depiction of a northern Michigan tribal community and the struggles it faces. The story centers around a bi-racial Native American women who finds herself assisting the FBI with a string of drug-related deaths in her Ojibwe reservation. This fictional tale is rich in culture, history and the language of the tribe living in Sault St. Marie on the border of the United States and Canada. What unravels is a mystery shaped in grief, drugs, sexual assault, racism and a host of other corruptions. The Firekeeper’s Daughter is an intense, complex book spoken in an authentic voice. I found the twists this book took engrossing. But I also found the adult themes incredibly heavy for a YA book.

Culture clashes. Interesting view of Native American culture as it interacts with current times. A strong young indigenous woman attempts to solve a mystery in what is a drug invested environment.

Contemporary Native fiction. Loved the authors approach and use of Native cultural mechanisms to set the tone and setting for her story about the hero, Daunis.

Such and amazing story!. I chose to read this book for a book review assignment, and I am so glad I did. The characters and community in this book feel so real. It’s such a great example of so many of the struggles Native communities still face today that go unseen. I loved getting to know these characters and I felt the crushing moments all the moser because of it. Such an amazing book, and a story I cannot wait to share with my friends!

Amazing!. This book has a forever place in my heart.

Best book!. Best book i have read in 2021,

Incredible. Stellar! This book made me feel so much. So thankful for the mix of English and the indigenous language. Beautifully written, wonderfully reflective, layered beyond belief, and full of stories and truths that we need to explore more regarding how indigenous women are considered, valued, & treated.
