Serpentine by Jonathan Kellerman Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Psychologist Alex Delaware and detective Milo Sturgis search for answers to a brutal, decades-old crime in this electrifying psychological thriller from the master of suspense.

LAPD homicide lieutenant Milo Sturgis is a master detective. He has a near-perfect solve rate and he’s written his own rule book. Some of those successes—the toughest ones—have involved his best friend, the brilliant psychologist Alex Delaware. But Milo doesn’t call Alex in unless cases are “different.”
This murder warrants an immediate call. Milo’s independence has been compromised as never before, as the department pressures him to cater to the demands of a mogul: a hard-to-fathom, megarich young woman who is obsessed with reopening the coldest of cases—the decades-old death of the mother she never knew.

The facts describe a likely loser: a mysterious woman found with a bullet in her head in a torched Cadillac that has overturned on infamously treacherous Mulholland Drive. No physical evidence, no witnesses, no apparent motive. And a slew of detectives have already worked the case and failed. But as Delaware and Sturgis begin digging, the mist begins to lift. Too many coincidences. Facts turn out to be anything but. And as they soon discover, very real threats lurking in the present.

This is Delaware/Sturgis at their best: traversing the beautiful but forbidding place known as Los Angeles and exhuming the past in order to bring a vicious killer to justice.

Boring. The main characters are cardboard with no distinguishing features. The plot is confusing and wandering. I used to like his books. No more. I think he has poorly paid assistants writing them cribbing details of the main guys from past books. Don’t waste your money.

Serpentine. A good read I enjoy the author’s books and writing style

Love details!. This mystery was fantastic! Some reviews thought it was too detail-oriented. No such thing. I loved the detail. It made me think about everything instead of just words on the page. I love the partnership between Milo and Alex. Great read.

Totally absorbing. A great read-kept you in suspense until the very end and the end was outstanding in terms of no loose ends. Milo and Alex are a perfect pair-compliment each other very well. Can’t wait for the next book.

Interesting. I first read the reviews from others who didn’t think much of this book, but I enjoyed it. It got pretty interesting and had a nice twist.

Very enjoyable read. Well written

Disappointing. I have always enjoyed J. Kellerman books but this one failed to hold my interest. Too many characters, too many directions while driving all over LA and environs, too much food! When did Robin return .. last book I read they had separated. Look forward to the next ... maybe shorter book.

Couldn’t Put it Down!. I read lots of books but this one was absolutely brilliant! I read the whole book in two days. Great stuff!

Interesting but too contrived. This is, in most respects a typical Kellerman novel and perhaps at this point I’ve read too many of them. The badinage between Delaware and Sturgis seems stale, banal and reminiscent of most of the rest of the books. The plot is byzantine, more so than in his more recent past endeavors, and at times seems overly contrived. The other characters populating the novel are relatively flat, un interesting, and not fully developed into full-fledged people sufficient to hold the reader’s interest. Kellerman is a gifted storyteller, but he may have reached the end of the line for this series.

Can’t put these books down. I shouldn’t read Kellerman books because they’re so good I can’t stop reading them hours on end, to the detriment of getting anything else accomplished. I’m sure I’ve stayed up many a night into the wee small hours to finish his novels. It helps that I used to live in LA so his attention to detail about LA cities and streets makes his books so interesting and full of memories. To say nothing about keeping you on the edge of your seat with the crimes he’s writing about. I’ve come to know his characters over the years by reading all of his books. Milo is a wonderful detective who you can really like, irascible as he is competent. You wish you had a therapist like Dr. Alex Delaware. Thoughtful, even keeled, loving and romantic with his wife, Robin. I can always picture in my mind the instruments she’s working on from the author’s attention to detail in his storytelling. You won’t be disappointed in any of Jonathan Kellerman’s novels. Janis H

Ended well. Confusing story with a good ending. Too many characters. Hard to keep them straight. A convoluted story of an old cold case.

Another shining star. He’s done it again. Love Milo and Alex. Kept me wondering until the end.

Serpentine. Not a great outing for Alex and Milo. None of the characters (of which there were too many) were appealing, too many descriptions of California traffic (Kellerman filler), and the resolution was boring. Earlier books were great - this was just formulaic.

Serpentine. Characters are fleshed out more and their depth add intrigue to the mystery. I’ve been reading his mysteries for years and this one left out the part with Alex & “big guy “ being in mortal danger. Appreciated the switch in pattern. Wonder if real investigators find so much , from so little, after 30+ years. Definitely worth reading.

Hard to keep up. Disjointed, easy to loose each persons position and relevance in the story .

Good read. Good story. The pace keeps you intrigued.

Just ok…. Too much conversation and unnecessary details for my liking. So many minor characters, I couldn’t remember who was who.

Serpentine. Engrossing from the very beginning. Great character development. Love the main duo, Milo and Dr. Delaware.

Disappointed. I love this series. But this book just didn’t make sense. Too many characters that the book didn’t tie together. Hopefully the next book is as good as the past books. This one didn’t cut it.

Good story!. The only thing was the similarities to Alex Cross made me think I was reading a different book a couple times at the beginning. Good plot. Easy to read.

Twists and turns you never saw coming. Definitely recommend, great read and it’s nice to see a different kind of detective portrayed in these books than the normal skirt chasing kind other authors often have.

Nice and twisty!. Love convergence of plot lines and character development
