Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Once in a great while, a book comes along that changes our view of the world. This magnificent novel from the Nobel laureate and author of Never Let Me Go is “an intriguing take on how artificial intelligence might play a role in our futures ... a poignant meditation on love and loneliness” (The Associated Press). • A GOOD MORNING AMERICA Book Club Pick!

Here is the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her. Klara and the Sun is a thrilling book that offers a look at our changing world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator, and one that explores the fundamental question: what does it mean to love?

Thought provoking but not for everyone. This is REAL science fiction that actually questions life and that nature of humanity. Yes, the writing style is simple and not overly complicated but that is a GOOD thing. No bothering with useless clutter words that say the same thing, just take up more space. The reason the style is so plain is because the story is from the POV of an android

Fascinating!. Much to think about in this novel! Our increasing dependence on technology to “experience” life carries a variety of risks along with advantages.

Heart warming and thought provoking. Touched on so many themes.

Poignant, sharp, timely - a near-classic. I was taken by this story, which was thought provoking and heart wrenching, and most of all the rigorously imaginative prose. klara’s observations of human behavior, so naive yet so far seeing into the circumstances and motivation of the people she encounters, sparked profound reflection into my own worldview. The writing was sometimes astonishing, carving the subtlety of a multitude of human emotions into their simplest forms. The mechanics of the plot itself were less important to me than then the perspective the story exposed, but I would understand a more equivocal or negative response to this book if the plot concerned you most. After reading, I am left inspired to look outwards with more curiosity - and to ultimately understand more of the world around me, like Klara.

It made me fall more in love with the world. It is a sweet and eloquent novel, told from the “objective” perspective of a robot that processes feelings and thoughts through close scrutiny of humans, through their words, gestures, and actions. It is a love story-of the many kinds of love humans are capable of experiencing, and how our loves change over time, some never really going away. It is also a love story for Mother Earth. As an artist myself, I reveled in the imagery, in the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures. This novel, like his “The Remains of the Day,” begins as a sapling and blooms into a wonder. As a high school English teacher, I will recommend this novel for summer reading.

Transfixed!. I looked forward to reading this book each night. The author took me to another world that was a bit strange yet familiar and accessible. Klara was an exquisite character. Kind, intelligent and highly observant and I very much cared about her. Excellent storytelling!

Hinted at some interesting themes. But just never grabbed me. I wasn’t able to form relationships with or feelings for the characters. I finished, dutifully, and it’s not a _bad_ book, but also not what I’d consider great literature.

Klara and the Sun. So fascinating and creative for those who like AI.Very interesting slant on the possibilities for the future.

Exceptional and unique. Powerful storytelling in a simple tale.

Really cute story.. I loved this quick read. There was so much symbolism between the relationship with Josie and Klara. What the AFs meant to people and what they provided the teenagers. The Sun too. It was beautifully written and ended in the perfect way.

stays with you. haunting book, that lingers like the finish of a quality wine, yet a somewhat boring read. some characters were quite dimensionless. but dear Klara! and i do not look at the sun the same way now

Wish it had more. There was so much left unanswered. The book never drew me in, I kept waiting for the story to grip me- it missed the mark for me.

Thank you, Dear Author. One of the most beautiful, heart-wrenching, thought-provoking books I’ve ever read. Sir Kazuo Ishiguro creates as vivid and poignant a world in “Klara” as he did in “Never Let Me Go.” He allows space for the reader to discover her own associations, emotional and intellectual, to the themes he explores. My experience of reading this book calls to mind my experience of psychoanalysis, how intense the emotional bond is between the analytic pair, a bond that’s strong enough to bear contact with the truth of what’s inside our minds and hearts.

Interesting concept, but so much missing. The prose in this book is lovely, and the premise is intriguing, but I felt that I couldn’t quite understand everything because there were just too many gaps. The term “lifted” wasn’t truly explained which made it hard to grasp the difference between the lifted and unlifted, and I felt that the second half of the book was rushing to tie it all together, which made the end a bit unsatisfying.

Hood peak into the future of AI. And genetic engineering. Quick read. Well written. My only complaint to the editors.... should be dog LED not LEAD in two places!!

Futuristic Fairy Tale. Ultimately unsatisfying.

Low impact story line. Not much density in this rather quaint story. I was waiting for something substantial to happen but it never arrived. Not really Sci-fi. Pretty much just a contemporary story about a child and her caregiver.

Ishiguro is magic. This book starts somewhat slowly, but gets ever more engaging. As the story becomes more established, Ishiguro creates moments that are utterly unique to his writing. Scenarios that he portrays with a kind of fidelity to reality that I’ve never seen elsewhere. I don’t want to give anything away, but I’ll say that as with his other books, he finds nuances in the relationship between emotions and behavior that are beyond uncanny. Another marvel from this remarkable artist.

A work of literary art. This work will remain with you long after you finish it. It makes a series of profound statements about love, the human condition, the simplicity of connecting with one another and the blurred lines between reality and AI. I found myself re-reading chapters of the book it was written so well and copied passages to keep on hand. I won’t type them here (no spoilers). You won’t be able to put this book down once you pick it up. I wish all authors wrote at this level.

Klara and the Sun. Story and writing style was FLAT!!

Beautiful. Beautiful book about human emotions, especially love.

Leaving a tear. Thought provoking. Profoundly emotional. With just enough mystery to keep the story alive inside of my heart such that I may never forget Klara. Or the Sun.

A story like a poem. This is a great book. Beautifully, slyly written.

Intriguing arcs that never went anywhere. So disappointed especially in the ending. Waste of my time.

A must read!. An absolutely breath-taking book that had me hooked.

Maybe humans are, in fact, unique. An fascinating take on AI and its relationship with humans and the human spirit. Admittedly, though, there were too many futuristic references and sequences whose meaning was not clear to me.

Ishiguro excels again. Intriguing. Thought provoking. Finely crafted. Leaves one with many questions to ponder.

It’s not that I didn’t LIKE this book.. It just made me feel so uncomfortable because so much of what he addresses is happening right now. Spooky

Disappointment. So much potential, but this one dragged and went nowhere. Felt little for thecharacters, and the premise has been done before. Sadly disappointing.

Could not put this book down. Beautiful.. Could not put this book. Loved it.
