Murder at the Mayfair Hotel by C.J. Archer Book Summary

It was the most fashionable place to stay in London, until murder made a reservation. Solve the puzzle in this new cozy historical murder mystery from USA Today bestselling author of the Glass and Steele series.

December 1899. After the death of her beloved grandmother, Cleopatra Fox moves into the luxury hotel owned by her estranged uncle in the hopes of putting hardship and loneliness behind her. But the poisoning of a guest on Christmas eve throws her new life, and the hotel, into chaos.

Cleo quickly realizes no one can be trusted, not Scotland Yard and especially not the hotel’s charming assistant manager. With the New Year’s Eve ball approaching fast and the hotel’s reputation hanging by a thread, Cleo must find the killer before the ball, and the hotel itself, are ruined. But catching a murderer proves just as difficult as navigating the hotel’s hierarchy and the peculiarities of her family.

Can Cleo find the killer before the new century begins? Or will someone get away with murder?

Suspenseful. I thought that it was slow at the beginning but did enjoy reading further.

Good Mystery, Annoying MC. To be fair, I really liked Cleo at the beginning, and then it just went down hill. She kept getting angry at people for assuming things and then she would go off and do just that. She was a hypocrite in so many ways. The mystery itself was great, and the writing was lovely. I will try out the sequel to see if Cleo gets better though.

Murder at the Mayfair Hotel. Cleopatra Fox reluctantly accepts her aunt and uncle’s offer to move into the hotel they own. Though she wishes to earn her keep, her uncle quickly informs her that he expects no more from her than from his own daughter. Despite being counseled to live a life of leisure, Cleo chooses to try to help by trying to unravel the mystery behind the death of a guest. Her inquiries help her introduce herself to staff and guests alike, but they also lead to bad outcomes for some of her new acquaintances. While the setting and story intrigued me, a couple of the characters seemed inconsistent in their behavior. I also found myself pulled out of the story quite a few times by poor word choices that distracted from or contradicted the ongoing action in a scene.

ok, nothing special. it wasn’t bad, not that good either, but pretty good light read

Love this. I never read a book by this author before and Im surprised I never discovered her before. Love the characters and plot. Definitely reading the entire series.

Murder At The Mayfair Hotel. Loved it. Great characters and murder mystery.

Murder at the Mayfair Hotel. A fun mystery. Main character is a little impetuous.

Murder At The Mayfair Hotel.. I Love Cleo. Her gift for sniffing out the truth is compelling. Cant wait to see if she finally hooks up with Mr Armitage❣️Some great characters. Victor is a good one😄

Good Title. The story is enjoyable and keeps one's interest to see what happens. Goodness wins over evil which so many of today's writers ignore, then wonder why our present society is so messed up. Thank you. Fran

Murder At The Mayfair. Delightful. Slow but highly interesting. I never solved who did it until Cleo Fox informed me. I guess I have to buy her next one.

Good Read. Engaging. Exciting. In-depth character development.

Mayfair Hotel. Great book! Well written. Kept me engaged from beginning to end.

Astonishingly beautiful. It was so complex and wonderful I loved it so much and it helped me fall asleep. Because for some reason reading this made me feel relaxed more than any other book .Overall really interesting and amazing 🤩

Murder. An amazing book, I couldn’t put the book down, not even when my iPad was on three percent.

Review of Murder At The Mayfair Hotel. An excellent introduction to this author,I look forward to reading more books by this author

Too cosy for me. Not sure why I persevered with it until the end - will not be reading another in the series.

Midnight murder. Was gripping but felt Miss Fox seemed to take over a lot when she was new to the people around her and it didn’t say that she had prior detective skills when she got into it. Made it seem rather far fetched.

Great book. Loved the story, the writing style, the setting, just everything!

A thoroughly entertaining read. I really enjoyed this book. It was interesting to read about a posh hotel and the way that things were done. The murder and the silver thief added an extra dimension.

Murder at the Mayfair Hotel. Very well written. Characters appeal from the start and develop well. Loved the plot and was kept guessing until the reveal. Finished this wanting to learn more about the main players. Will definitely be reading more in this series!

Great read. The characters were well presented, and the plot twists were quite well done. Would recommend to crime and thriller fans.

Absolutely charming. A delightful introduction to Cleo Fox and the dashing Mr Armitage. A cosy mystery with the glamour of the Golden Age. Wonderful!

Well written. Good book with engaging storyline, even if the heroine is a spoilt pain in the backside.

Fab book. Fab story. Couldn’t stop reading.

Excellent who dunnit. Well written with lots of twist and turns. Excellent who dunnit. Set in the era where woman do not take centre stage this books challenges the status quo.

Great read. Another great read from a great author.

A cosy mystery, by-the-numbers. A cosy mystery, set in a posh hotel in 1899. Our protagonist returns to her estranged family under sad circumstances, and is thrown into a murder mystery. She bridges the gap between the aristocracy and the serving classes, and everything pans out pretty much exactly how you would predict. It’s light, it’s cosy, it is absolutely not going to be a challenge to any reader. Would I read more? Sure. It’s light comfort reading for a rainy afternoon.

Good book. Great story line! Perfect visual queues to imagine yourself in the Mayfair. Finding out who the killer was was a little bit anti climatic but not enough to not recommend the book

Absolute Classic. Really well written and clever murder mystery. I sat and read it from beginning to end in one sitting!

Very cosy murder mystery read. This story was a lot better than I thought it would be. The characters are really dynamic and unique and Cleo is a likeable protagonist. Very cute insight to the Victorian era. Definitely one of those books where you want to sit and read with a cup of tea when it’s raining, Look forward to reading the other books in this series.

A cozy fun read. A fun mystery with enough twists and turns. Character development is good and you can see yourself as part of Cleo’s world in the Mayfair Hotel. Have enjoyed CJ Archer books and this one doesn’t disappoint.

Good read. A bit mamby pamby but a good read all the same.

Fun and light. Sometimes I look for a fun novel that doesn’t involve dark or melancholy themes of world proportion and this book was just the right combination of mystery, personality and plot. In the vein of Agatha Christie and the who-dunnit genre , this was a good start
