The Anti-Boyfriend by Penelope Ward Book Summary

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone novel.

At first, my neighbor Deacon frustrated me.

Sure, he was great-looking and friendly.

But our walls were thin, and on occasion, he’d bring women to his place and keep me awake while he “entertained” them.

As a single mother to an infant, I didn’t appreciate it.

So, finally it was my turn.

When my daughter wouldn’t stop wailing one night, Mr. Manwhore came knocking on my door.

Miraculously, at the sound of his voice, Sunny stopped crying. And when he held her…she eventually fell asleep in his arms.

Deacon was rough on the exterior, but apparently on the inside? Mr. Single-and-Ready-to-Mingle was a baby whisperer.

After that night, we became friends.

He’d go for coffee runs. Come over to chat. Normal friend stuff.

But over time, our conversations ran deeper. We got closer.

Until one night we crossed the line.

Our friendship turned into a complicated mess.

I’d gone and fallen for a guy who’d sworn off commitment and kids.

I knew Deacon was starting to care for me too, even though Sunny and I didn’t fit into any plan he’d ever imagined for himself.

He was wrong for me—so wrong that I’d dubbed him the “anti-boyfriend.”

Then why did I wish more than anything that I could be the one woman to change him?

Deacon is swoonworthy!. Penelope Ward has done it again! Her characters reach in and grab your heart! Carys is a single mom with a baby. Deacon is a single guy banging his headboard against her shared wall. When these neighbors become friends, can it lead to more? Deacon becomes a much more layered character and steps in for Carys when she needs it the most, including the dreaded diaper duty! This is a must read! 5 amazing stars

Top notch romance!. This is definitely a top favorite from Penelope. Carys (like Paris) and Deacon have phenomenal chemistry in this friends to lovers romance. Carys is a single mom who has trust issues with men and with good reason. Deacon and Carys share a similar history that intensifies their bond. Their journey to rediscovery is so well written, I fell in love the characters immediately. When children are involved, I’m usually quick to scream stranger danger and my inner momma bear comes out. I didn’t think anything of the sort when Deacon came to the rescue to babysit. I was rooting for him, for them. The ending surprised me, and I love seeing the journey to self discovery for multiple characters. The neighbor was a hoot, she made me laugh out loud every time. Very nicely done!

So touching. Wow. This story was so unexpected. I absolutely loved the characters of Deacon and Carys. And of course Sunny. It was really quite beautiful and touching. I highly recommend it.

Great book!. Awesome from beginning to end. I would definitely recommend you read it. 🙌

Loved it and hated it …spoilers below. I love PW books. This is my fourth and I do love them all. However the last two books I’ve read has me hating the male protagonist at times. I loved Carys, she’s strong and independent. Deacon however I loved and hated at the same time. I’m glad when he came back after leaving Carys, she made him earn her trust and Sunny seemed to snuff him off. I understand the trauma he went through. I too went through a similar situation. Loosing a baby after a car accident. However him just leaving her for 4 months with no contact after telling Carys and Sunny he loved them and playing house with them was lame. Yes his past was very traumatizing, loosing a child is something you never get over, but up and leaving after he caused an accident was selfish and that is not how someone acts when they “love” someone. He redeemed himself at the end but I would have a hard time forgiving that fully if someone did that to me. Only after having a heart to heart with dad made him realise he screwed up. Eye roll. And also imo, them running off to Vegas to get married seemed out of place. I know people do that but what was the rush? They live in NYC but traveled all the way to Vegas to marry. Why? Wouldn’t they want Sunny to be part of their wedding? I feel the author didn’t want to write a wedding scene. Just my thoughts. Loved the book at the end but had to knock off a couple of stars just for some things I didn’t agree with.

A delicious neighbors to lovers story!. 4.5 stars. Every once in a while I get in the mood for a really good, friends to lovers story, and Penelope delivered in spades!! I really loved the dynamic between Deacon and Carys. He truly was the ultimate book boyfriend! He knew exactly how to bring Carys out of her shell, engage her in conversation, and anticipate what she needed to make her feel comfortable around a man. My most favorite parts between these two were the text conversations. They had me giggling up a storm. Carys is such a good mother to the adorable Sunny!! She's been through some things in her life and so she's a little on the guarded side, which I can totally empathize with. Even though she's only 24, she had to grow up fast and she's got a really solid head on her shoulders. The chemistry between Deacon and Carys is off the charts. He's just perfect for her, like I said. He's been through some things in his past as well that really made him and Carys kindred spirits. He was up in his head quite a bit which causes some angst and made me want to shake him, but he pulls it together at just the right time, so I couldn't be too hard on him. AND his relationship with Sunny was just so adorable! She was a very perceptive little girl! This story wasn't as angst-filled as some of Penelope's other books, and thank God for that!! It was the perfect blend of sweet and sexy, a touch of angst and a whole lot of feel good. The perfect read right now! And their cranky neighbor, Mrs. Winsbanger was a hoot!! I hope she shows up in future stories. The Anti-Boyfriend is an absolute must read!

One of my FAVORITE romances from Penelope Ward to date!. NO SPOILERS! Oh my gosh, I absolutely LOVED The Anti-Boyfriend! Penelope Ward wove a sweet, sexy, funny, angsty, and swoon-worthy standalone contemporary romance with The Anti-Boyfriend, and I adored Deacon and Carys’s story! The storyline was wonderful and engaging. It was so unexpected in a lot of ways, but I loved it with all my heart and thoroughly enjoyed the journey. The Anti-Boyfriend has definitely been one of my favorite romances from Penelope Ward to date, and I won’t soon forget Deacon and Carys’s deeply angsty and romantic love story. The characters were phenomenal and the best part. Deacon, Carys, and her daughter, Sunny, completely captured my heart. I adored them so much, and loved their personalities. Deacon was a super dreamy hero; he was incredibly kind, sexy, had a heart of gold, and the way he treated Carys and Sunny melted my heart. Carys was a wonderful heroine; she was compassionate, independent, also had a heart of gold, and was an amazing single mother. Deacon and Carys had smoking hot chemistry together, and even though their relationship was a slow burn, it was totally worth the wait (wink, wink). I loved and envied the friendship and deep connection Deacon and Carys shared, and I loved watching their romance unfold. There were a lot of ups and downs along the way, but I was ecstatic with the conclusion and couldn’t have been happier for this amazing and lovable couple. Sweet, sexy, funny, angsty, and swoon-worthy, The Anti-Boyfriend was a MUST READ from Penelope Ward, and definitely one of my favorite romances from her to date! I absolutely adored Deacon and Carys’s story, and can’t wait to devour whatever this author releases next!

Loved it!. 4.5 Stars The Anti-Boyfriend is the latest stand-alone novel by Penelope Ward. I was completely wrapped up in this fictional world from the very beginning to the end. I honestly could not put it down. This sweet, charming, friends to lovers story was everything I thought it was going to be. From the get-go I loved both Carys and Deacon. As next door neighbors they really didn’t know each other but when Carys hears him in the throes of passion, she decides she can’t not say something. That one event changes everything and a friendship is born. It seriously felt like I was watching them in a movie and watching their relationship progress. The way Deacon was made me love him all the more. Overall, The Anti-Boyfriend was a great read. Ward proves time and time again what a gifted writer she is. Highly recommend reading this book!

a friends to lovers, slow burn romance with all the feels. What a touching a beautiful story! Deacon Mathers is Carys Kincaid’s hot neighbor. Their apartments share a wall...and not a thick wall so she hears EVERYTHING! Deacon likes to entertain as a good looking single man, so you can see how that might be an issue for this single mom. When Carys finally gets the nerve to confront him, Deacan’s reaction isn’t what she was expecting. These two form a bond...a friendship, but could it ever be more? Such a funny and feel good romance with an emotional twist of course. If you are looking for a friends to lovers, slow burn romance with all the feels this is the one you want. Deacon is a saint and Carys is such a strong woman with her daughter Sunny. I laughed so much with Deacon and Sunny together! So Adorable!!! I really enjoyed this story and I could not stop smiling! Told in dual POV

The Anti-Boyfriend. What a wonderful story. Great characters and a twist I didn’t see coming. ❤️

DNF. I usually love Ward’s books. But the dialogue and the POV inner monologue was just so stilted and unrealistic that it continually pulled me out of the story, and I reluctantly decided to DNF. For example: “Thank you for sharing all this with me.” This conversation had changed the way I viewed people with special needs. I find it pretty implausible that a 29 year old man raised in the Midwest would respond with “Thank you for sharing. Only my friends who have grown up in California and had therapists speak that way. And it’s certainly plausible that a one-minute conversation or testimonial would *begin* to change the way an individual thinks about a group of people. However, it is a very trite, implausible and reductive “telling not showing” narration for a character to immediately observe that his viewpoint has changed for all individuals with special needs. Don’t get me started about a text conversation between a 24 year old and a 29 year old that includes: Deacon: How’s the first day of training?   Carys: It’s going great. I’m so glad I was able to make it. I have a lot to learn. But I’m feeling optimistic that I can handle it. Sigh. It is very nice to have a plot about a sweet single mother and a hot single guy who’s not an alpha-hole, but this needs a reality check.

Sweet , Special, Heartwarming. I loved this book so much that I absolutely devoured it. What a wonderfully sweet and heartwarming story that is quite a special read! In true Penelope Ward fashion, I was hooked right from the start with her words and these amazing characters she developed so beautifully. I was completely invested in Deacon and Carys' journey as they start with an easy friendship, since they are neighbors, that over time morphs into so much more because neither can fight that strong chemistry for long. They are so amazing together but because they both have pasts, it is not all unicorns and rainbows. Much of it is still magical though and they have a very special relationship. I love their interactions and their banter is a lot of fun; it is sweet, funny and sexy! And their text messages whenever Deacon would try and help Carys out were hysterical. They are both so very easy to love as was Carys's baby girl Sunny. And oh the swoon when Deacon interacts with Sunny. I loved every time they were together and the way his protective side comes out with her. I was grasping to hold onto my heart but I lost that fight.

A must read!. This is definitely one of my favorite books by this author. I absolutely loved Deacon and Carys. Friends to lovers romance. I loved the writing style and the characters. It pulled me in from the very beginning making me feel like I was right there with them. Well done Penelope! Another amazing read! Definitely a must read! Loved it!

Anti-Boyfriend. Ohhh this is a excellent book. I really enjoyed the chemistry And banter between Deacon and Carys. They tried to fight their feels for each other. I liked the character for Sunny. There are all different types of people in the world and this book showed that. Excellent book!! I couldn’t put it down and you won’t even.

Very sweet story. I loved the story of this book. It was a great depiction of how we limit our lives based on our own faults. Just the right amount of steamy!!

The anti boyfriend. The best book I have read in awhile. So much heart and so funny and loving at the same time. Couldn’t stop until I was finished. Loved everything about it. It’s a must read. A huge Fan, Michelle in California

Ok.. I preordered this book and was excited to read it. I’m a fan of the author, especially when collaborating with Vi Keeland, but I have to admit I struggled a bit with this book. I had to think why and what I kept coming back to was maybe it lacked some passion??? Was it too polite???? Too sweet????? I finished the book but I found myself skipping sections as I read. I’ll continue to read this author but found this book a little disappointing if I am being honest.

One of the great reads of 2020. Where to start and what to say that hasn’t already been said about this wonderful read, you know a book is special when you are drawn in from the first page and you sit up all night reading and even after sleep the story and the characters still occupy your mind, well The Anti-Boyfriend is one of those special reads. I was excited when I read the blurb and Deacon and Carys romance was everything I expected and so much more and I’m really not sure I have the words to do this book justice, so I guess I just tell you how this book made me feel. Deacon and Carys have chemistry but more importantly they have a strong bond and are best friends, what happens when you cross that line, will the friendship survive and will Carys adorable little girl be caught in the crossfire, can you really go from friends to lovers without hurting people along the way. This book has it all, characters with chemistry, an adorable little girl called Sunny who’s interaction with Deacon will have your heart fluttering, it’s sweet, it’s heartbreaking and most importantly this story felt real, you can relate to the characters and the plot and it’s certainly been told from the heart so please make sure you one click this gem of a read.

The Anti-Boyfriend. As always you are the best, love this book, but I love all your books. Looking forward to more ❤️❤️❤️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😊😊😊

5 stars. I totally adored this book from start to finish! A great friends to lovers story, a tiny bit of drama and angst and the sweetest story. 5 stars.

Outstanding. Where do I start? I have a new book book boyfriend, I fell hard for Deacon, what a swoon worthy man he is. I love single parents stories and The Anti Boyfriend was a great example of the genre. I was totally invested in Deacon and Carys’s story and don’t get me started on little Sunny, oh my stars I loved this book. I loved the friendship that formed between Deacon and Carys and the scenes with Deacon and Sunny, just about melted my heart, so swoon worthy. There was so much humour and my husband thought I was crazy when I laughed out loud on numerous occasions. From the first to the last page, I was hooked and had a hard time putting this one down when real life interrupted me. There were moments of soul searching and it was interesting as both Deacon and Carys looked deep into themselves and faced the truth of what they found. The journey that they take was not always easy but it was worth it in the end. This is a little gem, one I cannot wait to listen to on audio. One click, I don’t think you will be disappointed.

The anti boyfriend. What a wonderful story love all your books Penelope they get better. ❤️💕😍

Oh my heart!. Oh My Heart! Heartwarming and entertaining with characters that just touch your heart in a huge way. The words written in this book are downright beautiful and inspirational. I read slowly as I just didn’t want it to end, I wanted instead to savour the story! I wholeheartedly loved Carys, her strength and power to move forward was absolutely amazing. She is woman goals, I tell you. And the way she cares for Sunny just warms my heart so much. Honestly enjoyed everything about the storyline as it is unique, well written and caused me to swoon, laugh and want the absolute best for the characters. Deacon, what can I say. As her neighbour, deep down he is the most caring soul. Despite their initial meeting, lets just say he brings so much to the book. Just when happiness abounds, sometimes something occurs and you wonder what will happen. My heart was in my throat and honestly wondered how things would go. Life is a myriad of experiences for sure. An absolute must read in my honest opinion.

A really good read. Loved this book, as usual the writer touched on a sensitive subject and it was well done.❤️

Beautiful story. Loved this book so much .

Loved it❤️. I love Deacon and Carys’s story. From neighbours to friends to lovers. Carys is a single mom who gives her everything to her daughter. Raising her on her own doesn’t leave much time for anything else. Deacon is a single guy who’s only worry is where he’ll find his next night of pleasure. Little does he know that his neighbour’s bedroom is adjacent to his and she everything, keeping her up at night. An accidental meet in the hall changes everything. That is where it went from neighbours to friends to lovers. But happiness doesn’t come easy, even to those that deserve it the most. I loved it. It’s funny, sexy, entertaining. As always Penelope has a way to capture you with her characters, her humour and her story lines. This is another five star read and a definite recommend.

Great read. An emotional, funny and sweet love story between an sleep deprived new mom and her loud, annoying, sexy neighbour! The great read!

captivating and seductive. THE ANTI-BOYFRIEND by Penelope Ward is a contemporary, adult, stand alone erotic, romance story line focusing on twenty-five year old, former ballerina, single mother and PR rep Carys Kincaid, and twenty-nine year old, former football player and IT specialist Deacon Mathers. Told from dual first person perspectives (Carys and Deacon) THE ANTI-BOYFRIEND follows the slow building relationship between twenty-five year old, former ballerina, single mother and PR rep Carys Kincaid, and twenty-nine year old, former football player and IT specialist Deacon Mathers. After ‘hearing’ one too many night time forays from her neighbor next door, Carys Kincaid ‘politely’ notifies Deacon Mathers about his very noisy and very vocal bedroom conquests. Feeling guilty and a little bit attracted, Deacon apologizes with daily coffees and the occasional babysitting offer when needed in a pinch but Deacon Mathers doesn’t do relationships, and when their building friendship starts to turn into something more, Deacon begins to pull away, leaving a heart broken Carys in his wake. With weeks and months passing, and their dance of friendship continuing to straddle the line, jealousy reveals a mutual attraction that will be threatened when Deacon runs without looking back. What ensues is the slow building romance and relationship between Deacon and Carys, and the potential fall-out as Deacon is unable to let go of the past, and Carys is once again left heart broken when the man with whom she is falling in love, no longer wants Carys in his life. The relationship between Carys and Deacon is one of immediate attraction but Deacon’s nightly conquests are a reminder of a life of which Carys is not a part. Once an up and coming football star, Deacon’s career ended before it began mirroring Carys’s life of dance that was destroyed in an instant. Deacon doesn’t do permanent relationships and struggles with the idea of family and kids, and in this Deacon prefers a friends with benefits arrangement that is about to implode when the heart is unable to accept the truth. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text. We are introduced to Carys’ boss Cynthia; her ex Charles; Deacon’s friend Adrian, as well as Carys’ infant daughter Sunny. THE ANTI-BOYFRIEND covers several months and a few years in the life of Deacon and Carys. A slow building romance and relationship wherein weeks to months will pass where the reader is not privy to current events but you will not feel like the missing information is a necessary reveal. The premise is captivating; the romance is seductive; the characters are energetic, colorful and strong.
