People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry Book Summary
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Book Lovers and Beach Read comes a sparkling novel that will leave you with the warm, hazy afterglow usually reserved for the best vacations.
Two best friends. Ten summer trips. One last chance to fall in love.
Poppy and Alex. Alex and Poppy. They have nothing in common. She’s a wild child; he wears khakis. She has insatiable wanderlust; he prefers to stay home with a book. And somehow, ever since a fateful car share home from college many years ago, they are the very best of friends. For most of the year they live far apart—she’s in New York City, and he’s in their small hometown—but every summer, for a decade, they have taken one glorious week of vacation together.
Until two years ago, when they ruined everything. They haven't spoken since.
Poppy has everything she should want, but she’s stuck in a rut. When someone asks when she was last truly happy, she knows, without a doubt, it was on that ill-fated, final trip with Alex. And so, she decides to convince her best friend to take one more vacation together—lay everything on the table, make it all right. Miraculously, he agrees.
Now she has a week to fix everything. If only she can get around the one big truth that has always stood quietly in the middle of their seemingly perfect relationship. What could possibly go wrong?

A very good love story. That spans 12 years…you might enjoy it…….
Boring. Really boring. I kept going back trying to read it thinking it would pick up, but only got to page 164. I finally gave up.
People We Meet On Vacation. It always starts out as friends, doesn't it? Well..that's what they say. 😏 In Henry's second book, that seems to be the case: I love that Poppy (forgot her last name) and Alex Nilsen started out their relationship as friends; then I liked learning that their friendship turned out to be complicated when it is insinuated that they have romantic feelings for one another; and I enjoyed the slow-burn romance for sure as they got closer together---in the past and in the recent chapters. This book is one of my favorites. 😍😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️❤️
Unexpectedly good. I decided to read it on a whim. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Good break from my usual M&M. Recommend for light-hearted romance.
So good!. If you love quirky rom-coms that will make you laugh, cry and blush through the steamy parts, this book is totally for you! The plot is very simple yet there are so many layers within this beautiful friendship between the two main characters that will make you fall in love with this book. I definitely can see myself re-reading this story over and over again. It is one of those light hearted romance reads but with enough drama and depth to it that makes it such a page -turner. I highly recommend this book!
Great read. Enjoyed the characters, I thought they were well written with great growth. I read this pretty quickly, not wanting to put it down. I also found myself not knowing how I wanted it to end, but really enjoying the ride.
For when you want to meet absolutely no one on vacation!. This was a cute little story I read while traveling. It’s perfect for zoning out on an air plane, and it makes you feel warm and fuzzy despite being sandwiched in the middle seat of a 737. Highly recommend for all of your cutesy rom-com travel needs.
Wholesome & sweet. It’s the perfect buffer book (when in between other books) not too serious. It has an interesting way of story telling as well. (Goes back and forth between Past and present, which I surprisingly enjoyed) I went in with very low expectations, friends to lovers didn’t seem very exciting but this executed it very well. You will leave with alllll the warm fuzzy feelings in your stomach ☺️
People we meet on vacation. Too predictable
boring, not really interesting story line. halfway through the book and there’s no feeling of a connection between them.
Meh.. It wasn’t horrible, but it also isn’t “can’t put down, finished it one day” good. Predictable and veryyy slow. Poppy wasn’t an “interesting” character that left an impression, and now that I think about it… neither was Alex.
Totally relatable, I could read this over again. I feel madly I love with the characters in this book, probably because we have all been there in our lives at one time or another. I love the love Alex and Poppy share. I really enjoyed their journey! A must read for me!
Not good. this book would be good for maybe high schoolers.
This book was like a warm hug. I LOVED this book! It wasn’t just about love, it was also about growing up and navigating the world. As a person in their 20s, I also found myself feeling lost or constantly running from my problems. This book allows the reader to fully process their own emotions through the eyes of Poppy & Alex. So beautiful.
Super cute. Great brain candy.
Speechless. So good, I loved the slow burn romance that it had and every chapter kept me enthralled for more. Perfect as a beach read or an anywhere-anytime read. I love the authors artistry and she has created a masterclass in slow burn. I love this book.
Witty & cute. It took me probably about 100 or so pages to get into it. But once I did, I couldn’t put it down.
meh, be careful. it was good until i got halfway through and then it started getting really dramatic and it wasn’t a lighthearted summer read anymore like it was in the beginning. so just a warning, be careful reading this!! it might not be all that it’s cracked up to be.
so so good. this book has a miscommunication trope but it’s such a cute book!!
Sweet. Had to round up to 4 because it had me laughing out loud numerous times.
Very Fun!. So cute and fun!!! Predictable but worth the ride! ❤️
Fun Beach Read. A good story definitely good for a beach read on vacation!
Hit all my interests.. A wonderful, suspenseful love story. I could not put it down!
Wouldn’t download. It wouldn’t download after the sample. Technically, I would love to read this. Was great!
Great summer read!. Lighthearted and very captivating, perfect summer read!
Boring. This is terrible boring. No chemistry between main leads and no interesting story lines.
Good enough. Good enough book but her other book, Book Lovers, is much better!
slow burn,,,but so freakin worth it.. This is the first book i have ever read by Emily Henry, and let me tell you not the freakin last. I have only read a couple of books where the author is able to transport you inside the characters lives so perfectly ( I’ll give you the sun , evelyn Hugo ). Emily Henry was able to make me dream about these characters, anticipating every next chapter, ever next moment with these characters lives. By the end we’re shown how our unsaid words, and feelings can plague our time and happiness with someone who’s worth it in the end. Also we definitely have an opposite trope in this, and who just doesn’t love reading about our missing puzzle piece in this world. 💗
Wow. No words.. Wow, wow, wow. This book has my whole heart. I fell in LOVE with the characters. The build up of Alex and Poppy’s friendship is what made me fall in love with this book. It was such a fun read. I was so interested in each summer trip, and the platonic relationship they had, and then it becoming a relationship-relationship. I felt like I was truly experiencing their friendship moments WITH THEM. It’s like whenever you have a funny moment with your friend(s), and you wish you had a TV show to rewatch it. That’s what it felt like. My new FAVORITE BOOK, and I’ve read a LOT of books. Read. it. now.
Can’t put it down. Laughter, tears, love!
Fun rom com. Well. I liked it (don’t get me wrong based on my criticisms, it was never on track to be DNFed). I think the characters were ok and I liked that the guy was the kind of nerdy bookish one. I didn’t get super attached to them but they were sweet. The plot was ok. I loved the non linear timeline and that it all leads somewhere and that it wasn’t just written that way because the author that it would be fun. However I do think that the thing that it was leading up to was anticlimactic. I would definitely suggest this one to any rom com book lovers but it’s not going down as a favorite. It was a little slow and uneventful for me but still enjoyable.
✨✨✨✨. I loved it🤍
Wonderful. You fall in love with the characters so easily. They are so believable and charming. I loved every part of this book that was so well thought out and captivating.
Meandering, but good. This was a good story. It was a very slow build, maybe a little too long of a build, but despite that it’s hard to put down. Worth it if you want a lazy read.
Great Story…. I don’t often take the time to write book reviews, but that was fantastic. For me, it was one of those books that you love so well you get a little frustrated at the end when the ads come up for other books. You just aren’t quite ready to move on yet, or even consider other book characters. Clearly, I loved it.
I read this book in two days. Looooooooved this book! I want to know more about Alex and poppy
👎 Poppy. I didn’t really like poppy and sure Alex seems like a great guy but I don’t feel like they are a match
Equal parts annoying and addicting. I passed on this one the first time around but circled back because I love Emily Henry. I hated Alex and Poppy but loved the way this book felt real.
Aw. What a cute little love story! This book is not at all what I expected — as in, i absolutely misjudged the cover. I do that often and probably won’t stop. People We Meet on Vacation is a love story told from Poppy’s eyes. The whole plot alternates between “This Summer” and her re-telling of various trips during summers past all the while acquainting the reader to Poppy and her best friend, Alex. Each chapter builds on their character and highlights their truly unique bond as friends. The scenic description and hilarious banter between the two made me laugh aloud and fall in love with them a little more each time. You know an author has done well if you ever feel you want a specific character in your life. I wanted both these people in my life. A lot. Given my wild imagination, reading a book is like watching a movie for me. I know the pattern…all is well, things intensify, things are great, something happens, it all comes crashing down, and finally it gets resolved. I hate the crash EVERY SINGLE TIME. It was no different with this book. I was vehemently upset every time the story jumped back in time, despite knowing that it was for the better and that I would not be disappointed. Every chapter was a treasure on its own, but that didn’t keep me from wanting more of their friendship at present time. I truly enjoyed the book enough to give it five stars, but I’m restraining because this isn’t some literary masterpiece that I’ll take with me for the ages. In all honestly, I’m a sucker for Hallmark movies and that’s what this book feels like. Cried my eyes out at the end and highlighted some things I’m going to go whisper at my fiancé so he loves me for life. <3
Predictable. Predictable from the Preface
Such a cute read. I’m a sucker for a good rom-com and this book made me laugh and made me teary-eyed. The characters were great and I loved that it wasn’t TOO slow of a read.
Hard Pass - it’s a weak read. Awful. Extremely redundant, as if the author needed to hit a word minimum. Trying way to hard to be “hip”.
I don’t even know. Okay. So, I liked the first half of the book, but god, the second half I cringed so badly through the other half of this book. Yes, the first half wasn’t perfect but it was still like acceptably unrealistic. The second half was just like a straight out romcom which makes sense as this book is inspired by When Sally met Harry. If I had known that fact before, I would avoided of losing so much of my happiness. Anyways, if you are a fan of romcoms, you will love this book.
Very slow burn Friends to Lovers. This book was beautifully written. If you normally love enemies to lovers and faster paced, more hints of romance through out the whole book…this isn’t for you. This book is a very slow friends to lovers burn and touches on some harsh realities of life, contentment and love. I loved this book, but I just don’t think Friends to Lovers is for me. It’s just too slow of a pace for me.
Beautiful. Fell in love so quickly with the wit and charm of the characters. Every time I wasn’t reading it, I was excited to pick it back up again.
Thoroughly Enjoyed!. An excellent summer read. Kept me engaged from start to finish. Can’t wait to see which book of Emily’s I pick up next!
A bit slow, but cute!. I thought this was a cute story. I will admit, the first 200 pages were a bit slow. Lots of back and forth and it took awhile for the romance to start. I loved Alex and Poppy! I do think Book Lovers was better than PWMOV.
So predictable. This might be the most predictable and boring book I’ve ever read. I don’t know why I even bothered to read it after reading the back cover.
A quick, cute read. A sweet getaway. I loved this book.
so great. such a fun love story

Inspiring. Well written and inspiring.
Best book ever.. This was such an amazing book. Couldn’t put it down. Had me laughing, sitting on the edge of the seat and crying. Wish I could read it again for the first time. Amazing.
10/10. Probably one of the best books I’ve read.
Well done Emily Henry!. I enjoyed this one. It has a very “When Harry met Sally” vibe but in the best way! It’s the fuller story rom com lovers have always wanted. The friendship and love between Poppy and Alex is beautiful and real. The brokeness of each character is heartening. The moral of the story was clear. The jokes were funny! I enjoyed Henry’s writing style and sentence structure. All that being said I did find the story to drag a little (now that might just be a me problem). 5/5 I understand why the internet recommended it.
Incredible. I am always reading books and I have to say honestly this is now one of my favourite books, that I’ve ever read. So lovely. How she writes is beautiful and the story is just so amazing. Really really love this one!
Beautiful story. A beautiful story peppered with flashbacks that show how the characters fell in love with each other in a slow burn. So well-written; heart-wrenching in all the best ways. New favourite book! 10/10
Book funk over. A classic slow burn romance that will get you out of a reading funk and won’t have you putting it down till it’s over.. loved it
