From the bestselling author of Lily and the Octopus and The Editor comes a warm and deeply funny novel about a once-famous gay sitcom star whose unexpected family tragedy leaves him with his niece and nephew for the summer.

Patrick, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP, for short), has always loved his niece, Maisie, and nephew, Grant. That is, he loves spending time with them when they come out to Palm Springs for weeklong visits, or when he heads home to Connecticut for the holidays. But in terms of caretaking and relating to two children, no matter how adorable, Patrick is, honestly, overwhelmed.

So when tragedy strikes and Maisie and Grant lose their mother and Patrick's brother has a health crisis of his own, Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian. Despite having a set of "Guncle Rules" ready to go, Patrick has no idea what to expect, having spent years barely holding on after the loss of his great love, a somewhat-stalled acting career, and a lifestyle not-so-suited to a six- and a nine-year-old. Quickly realizing that parenting--even if temporary--isn't solved with treats and jokes, Patrick's eyes are opened to a new sense of responsibility, and the realization that, sometimes, even being larger than life means you're unfailingly human.

With the humor and heart we've come to expect from bestselling author Steven Rowley, The Guncle is a moving tribute to the power of love, patience, and family in even the most trying of times.

A lesson in grief. Laughing and crying throughout the book. Insightful take on how grief affects us all in different ways.

Guncle. This is type of book that has you laughing out loud. You could feel the characters presence in the room and wished they were really there. You start read for it’s uplifting charm, and then you realize that it has a deeper meaning. Life is precious, and everyday should be lived. Loved loved loved the book.

Fun book!. Relax and enjoy yourself with this novel.

Read it. This book started out a little slow.. the acerbic nature of the protagonist was a but much. But as the book went on, he became more and more likeable. I ended up even shedding tears over this book. Worth the read

Guncle Love. Lovely storytelling.

Not just silly and fun. I began this book because I thought it would be silly and fun. And it was. But it was also serious and sad and heartwarming and every other emotion. I loved Patrick and Maisie and Grant.

Grief at its finest.. Such a beautiful story about grief and love!

Beautiful. Laugh out loud funny and beautifully written. I am so sad the guncle is over. If only I could have a dirty martini with him!

Grief. Amazing insight on loss and love and how we tend to mishandle both.

Terrific!. We’ll developed storyline both funny and touching. Kudos!!

Beautiful!. Loved every page! Write more!

I ordered the next book in the series. This review title tells you how much I enjoyed this book. A very novel novel with great character development. I’m looking forward to reading Guncle Abroad.

Fun!. An extremely entertaining and fun read!

Sweet Story. Charming characters and heartfelt story. I enjoyed reading it.

Tremendously wonderful. Smiled and laughed (and sometimes cried) all the way through. Can’t wait to read another book by him.

❤️. Loved this book!!

Love this book!. Couldn’t wait to get back to this book every night! Guncle (gay uncle) and his young niece and nephew struggle through some serious life challenges. Told from Uncle Patrick’s point of view, the story is filled with humor, sadness and even quirkiness but the situations and characters were real and show them struggling with modern day problems.

Very fun. Very enjoyable to read.

Guncle. This book is not what I usually read. I am so glad I did. Heartwarming, kindness, humor and acceptance was apparent. Kick back, relax and enjoy a wonderful story. 📖

Wonderful!. This book was just what I needed. It was love, laughter and family. As a single aunt who loves her niblings, I fell in love with the connection the guncle had with his niece and nephew. Fingers crossed this is made into a 10+ episode Netflix series with Dan Levy starring as the GUNCLE.

Guncle is beyond great!!. As soon as I read the description of this book, I assumed it would be a nice, sweet book. Wow! Was I ever wrong!! This book had me from the first scene with Patrick with Grant and Maisie!! I The grief was important, but the three main characters were great in spite of their grief. I sensed Patrick’s love for the kids, even if some things seemed to be strange. I also loved the rescue dog; Marlene seems to symbolize Patrick’s rescue of the kids. As this little family unit forms, the end of it haunts their future. The resolution of the story was thoughtful and real. I loved this book and highly recommend it.

❤️💛💚💜🧡💙. I adore this book. It made me laugh out loud and it made me cry. I didn’t want it to end! I can totally picture this as a movie, starring Dan Levy.

Amazing book. Finished it in 3 days. Such a beautiful story on navigating grief

Guncle. A lovely respite from the real world.

The Guncl. Charming
