Love for Beginners by Jill Shalvis Book Summary

USA TODAY BESTSELLER

What would you change if you had to start your life—and love life—over again?

When Emma Harris wakes up from a coma she learns that her fiancé and her BFF have fallen in love, she’s lost her job, and the life she knew is gone. Overwhelmed but grateful to be alive she starts over from scratch. Not as easy as it sounds, of course. But she’s never been a quitter, even if she wishes she could quit rehab, where her hot but evil physical therapist, Simon, puts her through the wringer.

Eager for a new beginning, Emma opens a doggy day care. Unfortunately, the only space she can afford is owned by her childhood nemesis Ali Pratt. But hey, she’s been through worse, right? She tries to roll with the punches, but a friend drops his grandpa off at the doggy day care in desperation then on top of that, she and Ali bring the term ‘frenemies’ to a whole new level. And then another grandparent shows up. And another.

In the midst of all that, Emma realizes she’s accidentally fallen for Evil PT. But the most horrifying thing of all is that Ali just might have turned into the best friend she’s ever had. And as Emma grows from the pain of her past and takes on her new path, she comes to realize that life isn’t what you’re given, it’s what you make of it.

Jill Shalvis never disappoints!. Every book I read, authored by Jill Shalvis , I say, “This one was the best yet.” So here I go again. Love for Beginners is the best one yet. Highly recommended.

Title doesn’t reflect the contents. Pretty real and emotional. Ups and downs and middles too! Just like real life. Characters are complex and yet their dreams are tangible.

Loved it!. I love the Wildstone series and this book is a perfect example of why. Jill Shalvis writes a world that I can fall into and root for the characters. We get to see favorites from previous books, but there's nothing that a new reader would be confused about. I've been eagerly anticipating this book since I heard it was coming and it definitely delivers.

Loved this book!. I love this series and I loved this book. This was a wonderfully written story that was heartwarming and funny with some drama and steam thrown in. This book had everything I love about Jill Shalvis books and I definitely recommend it.

A new twist on an old plot. Written well with some humor thrown into the mix to liven up a predictable “plot”. I almost always buy books written by this author. This is one of my favorites from her.

2nd chances and new beginnings. I love the way Jill Shalvis draws us, the readers, into her stories and has our minds playing video like we’re watching a movie. I’m hooked from the moment I open her books. This book is about 2nd chances, misunderstandings and new beginnings. Definitely a keeper to be read again...and again.

Imperfectly perfect. The Armstrong family and Emma Harris made me laugh and a few times almost cry. I enjoyed all the interfamily byplay, self reflection, and emotional growth the characters had throughout the story. The pets in the story were equally entertaining. Another Wildstone winner!

Love & Family!!. Where to start? What a beautiful story of living life to the fullest with whatever life throws at you. Emma is slowing putting her life back together after a horrible accident. Her gorgeous PT Simon is awakening feels she thought were long gone. Simon is trying to take care of his dad and his dad’s business which still caring for his PT patients. Emma is drawing him in and he knows he should just push her away. His cousin Allison is having her own troubles with her boyfriend Ryan. One thing these Armstrongs are stubborn but are slowly learning love and letting yourself be loved is so worth the risk. Beautiful story of love, life and family!!

Love these characters.. This book is as much about friendship as it is romance. Jill Shalvis’s beautifully written characters are multifaceted with real life challenges, a bit of snark and sarcasm. Simon is Emma’s physical therapist. She moves into the building that he lives in as she continues to recover from an accident. She also is recovering emotionally from a betrayal. Their friendship develops over the course of her recovery. Simon also has family obligations as he helps his father as he recovers from a stroke. Emma also reconnects with someone from her past in an unexpected way. This is one of the best of Jill Shallvis’s books. The conversations between the characters make you feel like you are a participant. I highly recommend this book.

Jill Shalvis does it again. Couldn’t put it down…as usual!!!!

Sweeet and relatable. Shalvis still has it! This is a feel-good but still very realistic romance set in Wildstone, and I loved Emma, Simon and Alison. I also fell for Dale, and of course, Hog and Killer, too. I love how Shalvis manages to bring everything together. People who seem like they could never be friends, strangers who need a little lift to continue on this strange and sometimes difficult path called life. Love in unexpected places, even when some of the characters worthy of love do things that are really stupid! Like not being able to share their feelings fully, for fear of being hurt. All of this is what also makes her stories not only incredibly relatable, but also so very realistic! I'm betting Love for Beginners is going to be a summer hit this year, and hopefully, we'll all be able to go somewhere else than our own yard (or even town!) to read it in a favorite place we haven't been able to visit in a long time.

Good read. Fun and captivating

Very touching, inspirational romance.. Love for beginners is life lessons for the love impaired. Love for Beginners is a survival guide for the hopeless, the helpless. Love for Beginners is a happily ever after, not just for Simon and Emma, but for the reader that takes the lessons within the pages and believes in them. Love for Beginners was perfection, encouragement, and a beautiful love story. I am a big fan of the Wildstone series, but I am an even bigger fan of Love for Beginners. The character journeys are real, believable, identifiable. I want to walk in their shoes and be a success. I want to take their words and find hope. I may not run a 5k. I may not find a perfect relationship. What I will do is not give up. What I do have is a role model, more than one. Every day is a new beginning. Thanks to Jill Shalvis, I have a new life motto, "Your best days aren't behind you. They are right in front of you." Thanks to Jill Shalvis, I want to have that moment where I can say, "Every moment with you feels lucky". Who knew Icould learn so much from a contemporary romance? I can't wait for the next book by the author. I am ready and waiting.

Another amazing Jill Shalvis small town romance!. I love Wildstone and I love coming back to this town and this series and these characters. I loved reading Emma's and Ali's stories. Both were just so good and in completely different ways even though they were able to mend their fences. This was so very needed since Emma was starting a relationship with Ali's cousin, Emma's Physical Therapist after her accident and coma. I don't know why but I love reading about a main character who is able to overcome adversity. And in this instance, it is healing her broken body and relearning and honing her basic skills. Coming from a near-death experience, it makes sense that Emma is wanting to seize the day and live for herself. And Simon, oh how I really was tied to him with his father who has his own medical issues that Simon takes on himself. I really tapped into that and enjoyed his storyline so much.

Great characters!. Okay, so let’s start with the positive points of this book. It’s written by Jill Shalvis, a longtime favorite author who writes compelling characters and who have interesting lives and stories. Always set in beautiful locales, there is enough description to immerse the reader into the scenery but never too much that it’s overly wordy. While part of the Wildstone series, each book can be read alone without feeling lost. Every character…from our leads Emma and Simon, to Miss Kitty, from Simon’s dad, Dale to those cheating exes Ned and Cindy…makes the story richer. They all have a part to play and they do it well, thanks to the author’s pen. I would have liked to see a little more comeuppance and closure aimed at the cheaters, but I understand why Emma just let it go. For a young woman fighting to regain her life after such a traumatic accident, she was remarkably positive. It’s Simon who sometimes feels sorry for himself. He was the character I liked but was most frustrated with. Allison and Emma’s post high school relationship was definitely a winner for me! My only complaint is I thought the story dragged in places. I’m usually not someone who wants less in a book, rather than more, but at times I felt like Simon had the perfect opportunity to get his head out of his behind and push the story forward…and he didn’t. Or maybe I was just waiting to see if Emma and Simon could become a couple and I was too impatient? Either way, it was a great book that I think both seasoned and new fans of Ms. Shalvis will enjoy reading. Kudos!

Compelling story!. I think that I’ve read everything that Ms Shalvis has written and she never fails to write a compelling story with unforgettable characters. Some are people that you would love to meet, be friends or lovers with, such as Simon, Emma, and Ryan. Some are a little more prickly and take getting used to such as Allison (or Ali, if you want to irritate her) but once you peek beneath her attitude, you’ll find someone who will go to bat for you. The one thing that we learn is that no matter your circumstances or how you present yourself to the world, we all have issues, real or in our heads. The one thing that I liked is that no one was perfect in body or mind but all strived to do something to improve their life or their relationships.
