A moving historical novel inspired by the German occupation of the Channel Islands during WW2. This is a story of courage, resilience and everyday acts of defiance from ordinary people forced to live in an extraordinary time.

The USA Today bestseller!

June 1940

While her little sister Rosie is sent to the UK to keep her safe from the invading German army, Estelle Le Maistre is left behind on Jersey to help her grandmother run the family farm. When the Germans occupy the island, everything changes and Estelle and the islanders must face the reality of life under Nazi rule.

Interspersed with diary entries from Rosie back on the mainland, the novel is also inspired by real life stories from the author’s own family who were both on the island during the occupation and in London during the Blitz and is a true testament to the courage and bravery of the islanders.

An island at war. It has every emotion known to mankind, love, fear, hatred, joy uncertainty and sadness!

Civilians During the War. I’ve read several books about this time period , and I consider this to be one of the very best that I have read.

Mechanical errors were distracting. Really a good story, to help us understand that many of the people on “the other side” of the war were just like us. Despite our governments being on opposite sides, they are just people like us. Interesting setting- I’m going to googling Jersey and learn more about it. The only thing I did not like about the book was the grammatical errors, misspellings, run-on sentences and sentence fragments. Not sure if they are in the original manuscript, or whether they occurred when it was made into an ebook.

An Island at War. A great book. I really enjoyed reading about Gran, Estelle and Hans relationship. I’ve read other books about the Channel Islands being taken over by the Germans and it broke my heart reading about it. War is horrendous no matter what Countries are involved.

Island at war. Lovely book, concentrates on the human side of the occupation and gives a sense of how hard and dangerous life was then. Highly recommend.

Gripping eye opener. An eye opener to what the islanders had to go through. It was frightening and heart warming.
