Displaced by Bridget E. Baker Book Summary

"A fast moving, engaging tale in what promises to be an epic fantasy romance series," Kirkus Reviews.

The first time Chancery's twin sister tried to kill her was on their ninth birthday. In the intervening years, nothing improved. In fact, Judica stabbed her hand with a fork just this morning so she could take the last pancake.

Then Judica threw it to her dog.

But Chancery has a secret.

She's been watching their people's finest warrior for years while she was supposed to be studying. He's gorgeous, powerful, and a genius in all military applications—flawless in every way. Chancery thinks he may like her, too.

But he's supposed to marry her evil twin, because their mother chose Judica as her heir, the future empress of one-sixth of the earth.

Chancery, sick of all the drama, decides to run away from court to live among the humans, but the day before she's supposed to leave, she's helping her prepare for a ball. She tries on her mother's royal ring and the staridium stone reacts to her. She inadvertently fulfills an ancient prophecy of the woman who will unite the six families and save the entire world.

There's no way her mother's going to let her leave now, and things just became much more complicated.

Great!. I loved everything about this book! The story was unlike any other that I’ve read. Some romance, but not too much. Exciting action and twists. You don’t know who to trust. I can’t wait to read the next book!

A Masterpiece. Absolutely adored this book. I loved all the twists and turns the story took but it all made sense. Can’t wait to get the chance to read the rest of the series someday! I have a suspicion on who killed their mother and I’m dying to find out who it is! Absolutely 100% recommend this book. I’d been trying to find a good book that wasn’t 100 something pages and stumbled across this book. It peaked my interest and because of the length, I decided that it might take me a bit so why not go ahead and read it. Finished it within like a week and that’s with school and everything else around me.

Edge of your seat read. This tale will keep you on the edge of your seat! So many behind the scene plots, nasty politics and two sisters vying for a throne make for one exciting book!

A Super Series Starter. This book launches a seven book series and it’s a true page-turner. I could scarcely wait to see what was going to happen next. Wonderfully written with vivid characters. I recommend it highly.

Great start of series. I loved this story and can’t wait to read the rest of the series. It is clean and sweet, while still dealing with fighting matches sometimes to the death. It is a bit of a romance but isn’t the primary focus of the book. And there is a bit of a decision the main character has to make regarding what kind of man she wants. She can’t have them both. Chancery is the main character with her sister Judica being a strong secondary character. The love interests are Noah who is a human and Edam. I like Noah but was strongly pulling for Edam who I think she will end up with in the end. But who knows. I liked that women are the rulers. I have read others were it is a Queendom vs a Kingdom. But I like how there is an underlying theme that in any type of civilization where inequality is present that those not usually praised matter and have value. In this book men are not the rulers and the sons of rulers are bought and sold. Yet, they have feelings too. Just as much as humans do even if they are not the genetic elect like the Evians are. There are times in this book when as a reader you really want to love a character or hate them. But the main character helps the reader see good even in the worst of characters.

Love beyond words. Words cannot explain how lovely this book was!

Intriguing story line. Loved this book! So many twists and turns! Definitely kept me drawn in and made me want more.

Addicted isn't a strong enough word. I absolutely loved this book! And the entire series. Like I literally had dreams about it while trying to figure out who had killed the queen. In my desperation for answers, I even messaged the author with my guesses because I was going insane waiting for her to write the next books. She'd leave such tiny little clues, and it was exhilarating. I did manage to figure it out before the end of the series- will you?

Delightfully intriguiging and thought-provoking. Chancery is a daughter of the Empress of the Evians, a superhuman group that runs the world, unbeknownst to most humans. But she never expected to rule. The youngest daughter always inherits the throne, and Chancery's twin is younger by a few minutes. Chancery doesn't mind, though. She'd rather be in the background than the cutthroat society of Evian elite, and even dreams of moving to New York to blend in with humans. But her world changes when she tries on her mother's ring, passed down from ruler to ruler through the generations, and it responds to her. Now Chancery must decide whether to embrace her destiny, possibly at the cost of her life, or to continue her safer life in the shadows. Things I loved about this book: -The world-building was so well done. Without extensive explanations, the reader comes to understand a society of superhuman people with enormous physical and mental ability. They can heal themselves, live nearly a thousand years, and learn any subject with a small amount of study. Their society is a unique take on human tradition: rather than the oldest son inheriting the throne, it's the youngest daughter. Due to the long lives of Evians, sometimes a daughter will be heir to the throne, training and expecting to rule, for over a hundred years before the Empress has yet another daughter and the first is displaced. -The characters were not cliche. Chancery is the more reserved, quiet sister, but shows strength even before she is faced with the prospect of ruling. Judica (seen through Chancery's eyes) is cruel and remorseless, but we see glimpses of her pain and brokenness early on and eventually much more, making the reader empathize with the "villain." Teenage Chancery has a close relationship with her mother, rather than the usual angst, while Judica longs for the same affection but hides it with contemptuous words. -The humor was just enough to lighten the mood without distracting from the tone. Chancery and her friend Lark attempt to blend into a human high school but don't know what to wear and end up dressing like the teachers instead of the students. The Evian bottled water business is owned by the Evians, who gave it the name as a joke, knowing the humans who buy it won't understand the significance. -The ending left some questions unresolved (since it's the first book in a series) but does not end on a cliffhanger. I'm looking forward to finishing the series, but am satisfied with the amount of closure in this volume. All in all, I'm impressed with this book and author. I cheered and mourned and can't wait to see what happens next. How will Chancery's relationships with Edam (Evian who supports her and hopes she will change Evian's societal inequalities) and Noah (human who shows Chancery incredible courage, loyalty, and kindness) turn out? How will things develop with the sister who betrayed Chancery, as well as with the twin who has been her rival all her life? Can the mystery surrounding Chancery's mother be solved? And how will Chancery use her power when/if she rules? I'll find out as soon as I can!

Wonderful. It makes you wonder about things.

Go read this now!. Worth the read, for sure! Great characters that will drag you in and keep you hanging on!

It was okay.. I like Chancerys character but she also gets on my nerves a lot. She makes decisions based on what she wants instead of what’s in the best interest of her people. In a lot of ways she’s no different than her sister she’s just nicer about it. ..I’m all for love triangles but I think Noahs personality threw off the whole book it was like a jester popping out in the middle of a graceful ballet. I did enjoy the storyline though.

Great book. This is one of the best books I’ve read in awhile. Great story, great characters and well thought out story. No cliffhanger but it does continue in another book. Must read

One of my favorite series ever!. I love YA fiction and this series did not disappoint!! It has a brilliant twist on real-life, introducing deep, well-developed characters and engaging storylines. I can NOT wait to see how the series ends.

Absolutely Love It!. I loved this book so much. The characters and world and plot all fit together so seamlessly. And somehow it goes from a quasi-secondary world fantasy to a "supernatural human in a normal high school" halfway through, and it feels like a totally normal transition. I listened to this book on Audible and honestly at times forgot that I was listening to a novel. It felt so immersive, it was more like I was just hanging out with Chancery and her friends. The book has a timeless feel to it, like any good fantasy story should, but also has the characters faced with issues and questions of morality and philosophy that feel so relevant to the world we're living in, without feeling like the author is being heavy-handed. Bridget Baker has the amazing ability to create a whole cast of dynamic and complicated characters who are neither good nor bad, but complicated people who make mistakes and make bad decisions but also have the capability to love and forgive. And also introduce a love triangle with two characters who I honestly don't care who Chancery ends up with in the end because I love them both. If you're a fan of YA fantasy, this book is a no-brainer slam dunk. Add it to your bookshelf or ebook library now, and thank me later.

Step into the world of evians. Judica and Chancery are the polar opposite twins of their mother, Enora, the Empress of Alamecha. Think the Grim Reaper and Cinderella, in dress, attitude, and actions. In the evian world (yes, like the water! But actually because they are direct descendants of Eve, frequently living 800-900 years or more), the youngest daughter is the heir to the throne in each of the major ruling groups. Each empress can have hundreds of children, but it seems Judica and Chancery will be the last for Enora at her age. Judica has been trained for battle in every form since birth, as every daughter is upon birth until a younger sister is born, and Chancery has basically been a pet/companion for her mother. Very different upbringings in the same household. The personality of each suits their role in society and all seems to be going to plan until their mother is murdered. Unfortunately for the sisters, just prior to the death of Enora, something no one ever expected about Chancery is discovered. Now all the planning and customs are about to be upended and a battle to the death is declared. Of course, the hunky love interest is burning to step in and be the hero he thinks Chancery needs, but she is a young woman with her own mind, even if her heart is distracting her in a couple of different directions. Just the right mix of fantasy, actual facts, interesting concepts of the human world combined with an “other,” and romance to keep you reading straight through to the end, then clicking “buy” on the next book to see what happens next!

Awsome. This series is so good. Enjoyed the whole series. My guesses were wrong till the end. The Characters were well written, and relatable. Scary how it seemed to be current with what it going on these days.

Obsessed. I have read it twice in the past year!

So good!. Don’t pass up this series! Loved this book and couldn’t wait to read the rest!

Classic tale of good vs evil... or is it?. Its very rare I give a book 5 stars but this one is worth the rating. I don't read YA as much as I used to and when I do, I go into reading as an adult knowing there will be YA conflict. I thought the world building of this book was fantastic and detailed and thorough. The author went in depth with each character, building on their qualities and personality traits . I'm always amazed at the ability of talented authors to create such vivid worlds through their words. I was invested in each of these characters but especially the relationships between Chancery and Judica and their mother. The deeper I read into the story, I could tell there's more than meets the eye to these twins. Even though this book delves more into C's character, I could see the author was building towards an alternate POV for J's character. This book has fantasy, drama, YA romance and suspense to keep the reader wanting more. It ends neatly with no cliffhanger technically, but its impossible to stop at the end of this book and call it a day. I definitely want more and would be unsatisfied If I didn't already l know there were more books! Note.. I was given a listener's copy of this book for my honest opinion. I'd like to also note that I was pleasantly surprised by the narrator as she's new to me. I thoroughly enjoyed her VA ability and range of voices she portayed. **Parental Note ** There was a lot of descriptive gory scenes during fighting to this book, which I think will attract more male teens. (I know both my sons may find this book intriguing because of the violence and fight scenes) There is PG romance aspects typical of YA but nothing inappropriate. As. Mom of preteen and teens boys, I'd be completely fine with them reading this book. I don't know about the next books in the series as I haven't read them yet.

Great characters and well written. I really enjoyed reading this book. I found the development of the characters interesting and I enjoyed the plot. Lots of action to keep it interesting, with a dash of chemistry between the characters. Great book.

Great Read. This story was exciting and compelling and had some great plot twists. I loved that the characters were complex and interesting. The story takes you through a range of emotions and the best thing is, book 2 was even better!
