The Maze by Nelson DeMille Book Summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Nelson DeMille returns with a “genuinely thrilling” (The New York Times) suspense novel featuring his most popular series character, former NYPD homicide detective John Corey, called out of retirement to investigate a string of grisly murders much too close to home.

Nelson DeMille introduced readers to NYPD Homicide Detective John Corey in Plum Island, who we first meet sitting on the back porch of his uncle’s waterfront estate on Long Island, recovering from wounds incurred in the line of duty.

Six novels later, The Maze opens with Corey on the same porch, having survived new law enforcement roles and romantic relationships—wiser and more sarcastic than ever. Corey is restless and looking for action, so when his former lover Detective Beth Penrose appears with a job offer, Corey has to once again make some decisions about his career—and about reuniting with Beth.

Inspired by and based on the actual and still-unsolved Gilgo Beach murders, The Maze takes us on a dangerous hunt for an apparent serial killer who has murdered nine—and maybe more—sex workers and hidden their bodies in the thick undergrowth on a lonely stretch of beach.

As Corey digs deeper into this case, he comes to suspect that the failure of the local police to solve this sensational mystery may not be a result of their incompetence—it may be something else. Something more sinister.

The Maze features John Corey’s politically incorrect humor, matched by his brilliant and unorthodox investigative skills, along with the shocking plot twists that are the trademark of the bestselling author Nelson DeMille, “the master of smart, entertaining suspense” (Bookreporter).

Disappointed. I’m a fan of the John Corey series but couldn’t be more disappointed in this one. No “aha” moments or “didn’t see that one coming”, and a dull ending.

Definitely not good. I started out loving this series but after this novel, I won’t waste the money. The one track mind quips got old fast because it was non-stop. Story was slow moving with a so-so ending.

Excellent. Always a treat to read

The Maze. Another excellent DeMille John Corey story. Typically also very funny!

Always a good read. Many Corey great one liners so didn’t disappoint.

Couldn’t finish it. I have been a fan of DeMille for a long time and have read many of his books, but I couldn’t finish this one. His character has not grown or evolved at all and the scenes are just to contrived. I am disappointed and sorry I spent the money.

So sad….. I have enjoyed DeMille’s books in the past, but this one was awful! I could barely stand John Corey in this book. Stupid one-liners, hateful to women, and an arrogant egomaniac.

John Corey Rides Again. Another John Corey thriller that has funny moments and plenty of action.

Next time: less repetition, more action.. Given the thin plot, had Demille not obsessed repeatedly over Corey’s cynicism and sexual urges, the book would have been one-third as long. Makes you suspect that the author got paid by the word, not for an expertly told tale. That said, Demille can turn a phrase and his action scenes are excellent.

The Maze. He keeps it interesting, and his one -liners are creative! Read it in 4 days!

Waste of money. I think DeMille was getting paid by the word on this one. SO much narrative. Could’ve been completed in 1/4 of the pages.

I’m gonna, I’m gonna.. start reading at Chap 45. What a disappointment. de Mille is a favorite author, but this book was a total miss. The entire story was John Corey talking about what he is gonna do. 85% through the book and finally a chapter 45 is of interest, then it ends. Skip this book if you know what’s good for you.

Just as I expected. Love John Cory. DeMille never disappoints

No Thank you. All about an egomaniac, with very little “action”.

The Maze. Awful. Boring. Self-absorbed. 200 pages into the book with no plot, just the main character talking/thinking about his next job and how to get laid. Ugh.

Big nothing sandwich. I want my 14 hours of time I spent on this book. He went about two books too many with the John Corey series. My god this was awful. He actually had something good in it that should have been the storyline. And he would tease it. And some other directions that would have been good too. But just didn’t make the effort.

Short. So many topics that need to be explored. Corey’s relationship with Kate and Beth. There’s lots of room for another John Corey book.

The Maze. I could not believe that DeMille would write such an unimaginative story. The first two thirds felt like driving on a gravel road with four flat tires. He was trying to have the protagonist be way too cute and flat and unlikeable. His other reads have been very entertaining and imaginative, but really missed the mark here.

Good Plot but. . .. This novel had a good plot but it was too long. I kind of got bored with all of the sarcasm being pounded at me page after page. The book could have been at least a hundred or more pages shorter. There was too much repetition, I have read all of DeMille’s novels and rated them 5 stars but not this one.

Major disappointment!. Have thoroughly enjoyed all his past books. Seriously thought the plot would get better but even the title scene fell flat for me. The whole book portrayed Cory as a pathetic attention seeking horny juvenile. Sad, sad let down and hope just this one is his only dud.

The Maxe. Weak story

Slow To What?. This is the worst John Cory book I Have read.No action till the end, too many details leading to a hard to believe ending. When listening ,many times it was impossible to ascertain his thoughts from his actual words. The whole book seemed like a long audition for a job.

The Maze. Nelson DeMille. As the title implies…a maze of confusion, promises, lies?John Corey a former NYPD homicice detective and has worked for more clandestine government agencies than god has ever created is forced into a dilemma. Follow his heart are his training. An excellent read!!! My highest recommendation!!

Deceiving. Waste of time. Very infantile screenplay.

Just Not Sure!!. I have read all of the John Corey stories and have enjoyed all of them, matter fact, I don’t remember ever laughing so hard at a story as I have in the John Cory series. This eighth story in the series has me a little on the fence. It doesn’t seem to be of the same caliber has the previous stories before it. I guess I would say read it for yourself and see what you think. I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Not his best work. I am a big DeMille fan and especially the John Corey novels but this one seemed to go around in circles at time. The ending was fast paced but the first half of the book seemed slow c

Excellent. John Corey is back! Best-selling and award-winning author Nelson DeMille returns with another unputdownable and truly gripping thriller featuring retired New York Police Department homicide detective John Corey. In The Maze, he will step out of retirement in order to take part in a dangerous hunt for an apparent serial killer who has murdered a large number of sex professionals in Corey’s neighborhood. John Corey is the same remarkable individual that we all know and love. With his unique sense of humor, charm, wit, and definitely not politically correct views, this is one of the most original characters in fiction literature. American actor, writer, and award-winning narrator of hundreds of audiobooks and the voice of legendary characters such as Jack Ryan, Jason Bourne, Jack Reacher, and countless others returns to the John Corey series and delivers another stellar performance with The Maze. As you probably already know, Scott is one of the most respected and loved narrators in the audiobooks industry, so you can imagine that he does a fantastic job in bringing to life John Corey, but also the events and locations in this highly entertaining novel. The Maze is flawlessly written and exquisitely narrated, so, if you want to experience legendary author Nelson DeMille and narrator extraordinaire Scott Brick at their very best, this is your chance to be dazzled by their talent and I highly recommend that you don’t miss it.

DNF…It was that bad. This is the worst book I have ever read by DeMille. It was so full of f-this and f-that along with misogynistic writing that I have had enough with this series and this writer. I realize he’s trying to create a truly flawed character is John Corey but I’m done. No more DeMille books.

Doesn’t disappoint. Another thriller that doesn’t disappoint.

One of my favorite literary characters is back!. Great John Corey dialogue, both verbalized and otherwise. Average storyline. Great to re-aquaint with J.C.

What Happened?. I was reading The Lion’s Game on September 11, 2001. After, I read every John Corey book which came out. I was very looking forward to The Maze when I saw the pre-order was available. I am only 1/3 through the book, but will not continue to read it. My time os worth more that the $16.99 I paid to download it. After all these years, the juvenile sexual conquests and supposedly funny banter should have gone by the wayside as one would hope that Corey would have matured slightly. I got so bored with the background filler, I will just leave it at that.

Not what I expected.. This book was no Plumb Island, not even close. Almost as ridiculous as Stuart Woods has become. The only thing that had my attention was Beth Penrose, and in the end even she was of no interest. Dont waste your money.

Very tedious reading.. Very tedious reading. Obvious plot explained over and over.

Corey Still in Fine Form. Had to wait a long time, but John Corey is still in fine form. Nelson DeMille’s work is always entertaining and engrossing.

DeMille phones it in again. He was a great talent, doesn’t care much about the product now and it shows.

Great Ending. Seems John Corey is getting soft in his old age! Still great read.

Disappointing. Huge disappointment; read like a screenplay for a poor TV movie; huge fan of DeMille and read every one so his books, but this feels like it was mailed in because he owed his publisher a book. sad.

Worse than all his other books. I’ve read all of the past DeMille books and liked them. I read the first 25% of this one and absolutely ALL that he did was interview for a new job. I couldn’t continue.
