The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave Book Summary

Don’t miss the #1 New York Times bestselling blockbuster and Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick that’s sold over 2 million copies–now an Apple TV+ limited series starring Jennifer Garner!

The “page-turning, exhilarating” (PopSugar) and “heartfelt thriller” (Real Simple) about a woman who thinks she’s found the love of her life—until he disappears.

Before Owen Michaels disappears, he smuggles a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her. Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers—Owen’s sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey. Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother.

As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, as the FBI arrests Owen’s boss, as a US marshal and federal agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was. And that Bailey just may hold the key to figuring out Owen’s true identity—and why he really disappeared.

Hannah and Bailey set out to discover the truth. But as they start putting together the pieces of Owen’s past, they soon realize they’re also building a new future—one neither of them could have anticipated.

With its breakneck pacing, dizzying plot twists, and evocative family drama, The Last Thing He Told Me is a “page-turning, exhilarating, and unforgettable” (PopSugar) suspense novel.

Where is Owen?. I am not sure what it is, but this author gripped my attention from the first page. Our main character is smart, determined, and detective like. She senses how to handle people as she tries to find her missing husband and works hard to earn his 16 year old’s love and respect.

Page turner!. This story had me on the edge of my seat. I loved the methodical progression. The more the story unfolded, the more I asked myself, how will this end? A beautiful ending that sums up so many great themes used in this novel. Highly recommend!

Captivating Read. Great book! Love that the ending isn’t this fairytale ending, more realistic, still wonderful.

Save your money. A well developed story comes to an unresolved and abrupt ending. Total waste of time.

Worth the read. wonderful book keeps you guessing of what’s gonna be happening

Must have!!. This book was amazing!! And the twisted ending…hands down one of the best bones I’ve ever read!

Incredible. You will read this book in just a day. It captures your attention and you won’t be able to put it down. A great read for sure!

Overall a Good Book. Suspenseful and a lot of good elements to the story. I personally don’t feel like the author had to use the profanity to get her point across. I felt like it was excessive. I wanted the story to continue, (but that might have been anti-climactic.) So that’s a good indicator of the overall story

Predictable, unlikeable characters. Not sure why this book is so popular. Not one character I liked especially the 16 year old. Easy to figure out the “puzzle” very early in the book. Terrible ending

Slow beginning but still interesting. Starts slow and when it finally gets to the dramatic page turning then its over.

So boring and unbelievable. Predictable and boring. The 16 year old is so annoying. Hard to believe anyone would do what she did. A lot if weird descriptions.

Fun, sweet read, kind of improbable story. I really liked this book and was invested in what was happening. The relationships were sweet and interesting. There were some unanswered questions about what was happening that feel like plot holes if you think about them too hard, but if you just enjoy the book for what it is, it’s a good read!

Loved this!. Such a great read!

Sacrifices we make. This book has filled me with so much emotions. I honestly could not put it down. The sacrifice and love some have for others risking all and loosing all. My heart is so full of love right now.

Great read! Drew me in and I finished it in 2 days. Couldn’t put it down.. You know when you read a book that you can’t put down, it’s going to be a good one! This is great!

I’d pass if I were you.. It’s unfortunate, I bought this book and I couldn’t even finish it. It was so BORRRRING.

A Must Read. I never expected that this book would travel such a precarious path. I was excited every time I picked it up to delve back in. Unexpected, difficult choices are made. Every conundrum begins with fear. Then, before you expect it, your soul soars, because each decision, at its core, is refreshing and right. “The Last Thing He Told Her” never disappoints. I truly never wanted it to end. It was constantly in the forefront of my mind, and will remain so, because it’s one those books you’ll enjoy remembering.

Big buildup. Big buildup

An abrupt end with no resolution. This book was so subjective. I was bored to death. Also, idk about y’all, but I have had 3 step moms. Not one of them would have done any of that for me LOL! It was very far fetched. Not believable at all. I had to force myself to finish it.

A - F Scale: A. Thrilling. Easy Read. Captivating. Fast.

Great!. Couldn’t put it down!

overall very decent. Enjoyable read for the most part. I had higher expectations for plot depth, expecting a few more twists. still 100x better than anything I could have conjured up. C++

Solid read!. I like it, I like all of the characters, and I blazed through it. I almost wish it would have been longer to flesh out the tertiary characters more. How they all intersected in the past. Grady’s story etc

A fun read. This book was a fun entertaining novel I would say mostly about a step mother’s relationship with her step daughter as they try to navigate a complicated event. It’s emotional but not too gut wrenching that you have to pause and cry. I would suggest it to anyone who wants to have a moment to escape :)

First book in awhile…... Easy read. Draws you in. Enjoyable!

Solid. The payoff suuuuuucked. I couldn’t put it down though, so I guess I liked it well enough?

Meh. This was… a stretch.

ahhh-mazing!. This is such a captivating story that pulled me in immediately. Such a page turner, I hated when I had to stop reading to do other things. I finished the book in four days & I haven’t read a book this quick in years because of how invested I was in the characters stories! I will say though, the ending brought tears to my eyes, I won’t give details. You’ll just have to read it for yourself! But highly recommend & I hope others enjoy this book as much as I did. Now it’s time to watch it on Apple TV to see if it plays out how I envisioned it.

Great read!. Loved the ending. Great character development. Kept me reading till the very end with no problems.

Good casual read. Good beach read. A bit predictable but still interesting.

Interesting plot. Made me think about all the things you DON’T KNOW about others.

Meh.. I felt pretty indifferent about all the characters in this book. The only thing that compelled me to keep reading was that I kept hoping for something to happen that would improve the story.

Excellent! I couldn’t put it down.. Great writing filled with suspense.

Hooked. This book had been hooked up until the last 30 pages, got slow and the ending sucked.

Loveee Ittttt. Definitely a page turner for sure! It’s pretty graphic in some parts of the book and the end is definitely not something you’ll expect.

So good!. The last sentence got me! I loved this book!

Great listen!. Loved this!

Better I expected. Couldn't put this one down!

Could not put it down. The ending makes me want more to this story

Great fun. Several twists Fast read

Wow!!!. Twists and turns all the way to the last page…. A must read for sure!! Enjoy 😊

A waste of time. I don’t understand how this boring, unbelievable story got so many goods AND its very own series. It’s really just not very interesting.

Loved it!. This a great book! Well written and keeps you on the edge of your seat to figure it all out

Missed Opportunities. I think this book was really good. My only criticism is that the plot line missed some opportunities to take the plot to a higher level, but this is so subjective. Others may not agree, but I think the author set the foundation for some twists that were never exploited, the result of which was to leave some loose ends. Then again, perhaps what I perceive to be loose ends may in fact be walkways to the sequel.

Boring. I finally finished this book & I can honestly say I did not like it. I was hooked in the beginning because of all the suspense but as the book goes on it gets really boring. So boring that I put it down for two days then came back & forced myself to finish it, hoping for a great ending that never happened. Not to mention the daughter Bailey is VERY unlikeable. Wouldn’t recommend.

I don’t get the hype. A surface piece. Pop music book. Unsatisfying.

Good story was a little disappointed by the ending. This had a great story I just wish the ending was a little different

Excellent. Great read, finally!

It was like reading/watching paint dry. I hope the tv show is better than this book. I kept waiting for it to get better. It never did. Save your time and money.

So good. It had a bit of a slow beginning, but definitely worth it! Super good read, highly recommend.

The last thing he told me. Laura Dave writes like an immature 7th grader in English class. The positive reviews should not be believed. The 1- star ratings reviews can be believed.Do not waste your time or money on this insipid nonsense.Only a desperate publisher would consider publishing this awful book.

The Last Thing He Told Me. I absolutely loved this book! I couldn’t put it down. Enjoy!

Excellent read. Couldn’t put it down!

Interesting Read. An easy read. Keeps your interest up until the very end.

Ending…. I needed more at the end, was very disappointed with how it ended. I would still recommend as it’s an easy fast read

Eh…. Pretty dry, very slow. Felt like a lot of ‘hanging in there’ while I waited for something exciting to happen. This is the first time I’ve read this author and it will probably be the last. Her writing style of 99% internal dialogue is tiresome. Live and learn 🤷🏻‍♀️

Pretty OK. The book was a page turner but about 2/3 in, it felt like the author just wanted to finish it and get it out the door. Worth reading but it could have been better with a few more edits and a bit more time.
