The instant #1 New York Times bestselling mystery and Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick that’s captivated more than a million readers about a woman searching for the truth about her husband’s disappearance…at any cost.
“A fast-moving, heartfelt thriller about the sacrifices we make for the people we love most.” —Real Simple
Before Owen Michaels disappears, he smuggles a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her. Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers—Owen’s sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey. Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother.
As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, as the FBI arrests Owen’s boss, as a US marshal and federal agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was. And that Bailey just may hold the key to figuring out Owen’s true identity—and why he really disappeared.
Hannah and Bailey set out to discover the truth. But as they start putting together the pieces of Owen’s past, they soon realize they’re also building a new future—one neither of them could have anticipated.

UnbelievableI read the book and concluded I hate it. The story makes no sense. Why is this woman who is apparently a common woodshopper playing hardball with US Marshalls and FBI? Predictable. Disappointing Clichés.This book is filled with ridiculously disappointing clichés that are offensive. Not that goodI didn’t enjoy the book, found the moral of the story a bit stale and used by many authors before. Too many inconsistencies or mistakes. No legal bar in San Francisco is open at 3am, especially in a “boutique” hotel. No bar will serve you old fashioned in a martini glass. Labradors is the most friendly dog breed and make bad guard dogs. There is a middle seat on almost every plane. Monterey is not located on the peninsula, not even close. It’s not possible to get 600 thousand dollars in cash on a minute notice. The main character goes to length to “hide” by using somebody else’s credit card, but then uses Uber as soon as she gets to Austin. And so on. DisappointingThe premise is compelling but the characters are not believable. Hanna is insecure because her mother abandoned her early in her childhood, but her grandfather raised her and taught her to do woodwork. Somehow she becomes a popular craft furniture maker. Strangely, there is nothing in the book about her craft, about which she shows no real interest. She moves spontaneously from Manhattan to Sausalito with a man she barely knows, who has a 16-year-old daughter. The author portrays Hanna as insecure but willing to take incredible risks — what? The daughter is portrayed as a grumpy and disdainful, begrudging Hanna for not being her dead mother. She is thinly drawn to behaves stupidly, as if she had no sense, when she is supposed to smart and talented. The end play is totally unbelievable. Good idea, but poor execution..Score: 3/5
