The People We Keep Book Reviews
The People We Keep by Allison Larkin Book Summary
BOOK RIOT’S BEST BOOKS OF 2021
“This is a novel of great empathy, about connections and coming-of-age, built families and self-acceptance. It contains heartbreak and redemption, and a plucky, irresistible protagonist…[A] propulsive, empathetic novel.” —Shelf Awareness
Little River, New York, 1994: April Sawicki is living in a motorless motorhome that her father won in a poker game. Failing out of school, picking up shifts at a local diner, she’s left fending for herself in a town where she’s never quite felt at home. When she “borrows” her neighbor’s car to perform at an open mic night, she realizes her life could be much bigger than where she came from. After a fight with her dad, April packs her stuff and leaves for good, setting off on a journey to find a life that’s all hers.
Driving without a chosen destination, she stops to rest in Ithaca. Her only plan is to survive, but as she looks for work, she finds a kindred sense of belonging at Cafe Decadence, the local coffee shop. Still, somehow, it doesn’t make sense to her that life could be this easy. The more she falls in love with her friends in Ithaca, the more she can’t shake the feeling that she’ll hurt them the way she’s been hurt. As April moves through the world, meeting people who feel like home, she chronicles her life in the songs she writes and discovers that where she came from doesn’t dictate who she has to be.
This lyrical, luminous tale “is both a profound love letter to creative resilience and a reminder that sometimes even tragedy can be a kind of blessing” (Caroline Leavitt, New York Times bestselling author).

My Favorite Book of All Time. Reading this book was a pleasure - it showed me a brand new perspective on life and I feel like I’ve gained new life long friends. This book is a must read.
Love this!. Another winner for Allison “Allie” Larkin. Full of characters that I fell in love with immediately. The story moves along briskly, full of humanity and soul. Lots of love.
A must read. I haven’t read a book that made me laugh out loud or cry actually tears in a long time… this book did though. Such a great read. It’s in my top 10 list for best books :)
Wonderful.. April is easy to love.
Megan. Loved it. It was real, thought provoking and it brought me to tears. Highly recommend.
Escape on the road with April in this emotional novel. A story about the relationships that come and go over the course of a fully lived life. Deeply relatable and also unimaginable at times. This book was a joy to read, page after page.
Slow. This is a good story line but it drags. It could have been cut in half and all of the storyline still would have been complete.
The people we keep. Great read! I fell in love with April and her hard times and just kept waiting for some good to come of her life. All the people she met along her journey were so well defined and she made you fall for each one of them. Especially the people she kept!
The People We Keep. This book was highly rated and I enjoyed the story to a certain extent. But I did tire of the main character making one big life mistake after the next then abandoning the several groups of people who provide her so much help (like offering up their their home after meeting her for an hour) and express their undying love for her warts and all. She goes on suffering alone, and we are supposed to be sympathetic but she keeps kicking the people with her best interest in mind in their teeth. And, we are lead to believe that she is something special, is bright and musically talented. So its hard to reconcile her reckless behavior and have empathy for her when she seems to not learn anything when she repeatedly walks out on her supporters in the middle of the night.
Don’t judge a book by its description & reviews. I chose this book as “an inspirational” read based on the description and reviews. I didn’t find it particularly uplifting.
