Perfectly Adequate by Jewel E. Ann Book Summary

Fans of The Kiss Quotient will love Perfectly Adequate, a heartfelt and hilarious journey along the “human” spectrum from USA Today & Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author Jewel E. Ann.

Dorothy Mayhem is a nursing student, patient transporter, reckless driver, and emu owner. She knows she isn’t like other girls. Neurotypical people are nothing if not predictable, though, and that’s why she has made a hobby of studying their behavior through books and TV.
It helps her fit in with her peers when she can emulate them.

But nothing can prepare her for Dr. Elijah Hawkins.<br>
He’s a single dad. A brilliant pediatric oncologist. Widely agreed to be the sexiest doctor at the hospital. And entirely unpredictable.

Though getting to know the man behind the chiseled features and top-notch reputation would be her pleasure, Dorothy misunderstands one attempt after another to ask her out. Instead of dates with Elijah, she finds herself on a series of playdates with his son.

Roman is cute, sweet, and brings her unexpectedly closer to his father every day.

Dorothy Mayhem is about to find out that the only thing more unpredictable than a child—is love.

4.5 Dorothy Mayhem Stars. Perfectly Adequate had me smiling before I was finished with the second page. I don’t know how Jewel E Ann does it. I’m in absolute awe. Dorothy Mayhem. Gah! You’ve got to love her. She’s quirky, feisty, lovable, selfless. She sees and reasons life as simply as doing the right thing regardless of its benefits. She puts others first. She is an extraordinary soul that I could never come close to being. I’ll admit there were a few times I wanted to pull my hair out because I just wanted her to be a little selfish, but then that wouldn’t be Dorothy. Eli Hawkins is a man. And I don’t say that to be facetious. I say it because men are complex. His thoughts and reasoning and his complete acceptance of Dorothy is exactly how it should be. Of course, he is not without his flaws. He makes mistakes. He wants to love and be loved. He wants to do the right thing. He wants to be okay. Dorothy and Eli are as human as it gets. They love and live life in all its beautiful and messy ways. They are not without struggles. And that’s exactly how Ms. Ann gives it to us and I wouldn’t want it any other way. Jewel E Ann never ceases to amaze me. She can write anything. She doesn’t just tell a story, she tells about life. She writes characters that are inspiring. And this time she perfectly wrote a story that is way beyond adequate.

Quirky fun story. Dorothy Mayhem! The name says it all! A girl who has a form of Asperger’s and the heart of gold stole Dr. Elijah Hawkins heart! This divorced Dr. had no idea how his life would change but he wasn’t prepared to be swept off his feet! Love at its purest form! This was a fun read! Jewel E. Ann is always a one click author for me!

RomCom with heart and soul!. An amazing RomCom with all the feels and heart! Dorothy is on the autism spectrum, this made for a very interesting main character. I adored her bluntness so much! So many funny AND thought provoking moments because of her “different” perception. She is AMAZING! Elijah is all things great in a leading man, love him so much! Swoon! It’s a RomCom with intelligence and a lot of heart and soul! Packed with humor and wisdom this book is a delightful gem with really unique heroine who is impossible not to adore. Definitely Perfect!

Perfectly Adequate. Didn’t like at all. Couldn’t even skim through and finish,

Learning a valuable leasson. I'm so in in love with this book and characters. I couldn't put the book down. I had a lot of mix feelings happening all at the same time. I even felt scared waiting for the other shoe to drop. I felt like I was at the edge of my seat because I didn't want to experience some type of whiplash that I couldn't handle other than the regular coming from Dorothy's behavior. But there is not a hint of disappointment in me. I can always learn a valuable lesson from Jewel's characters. You will love these two. I felt proud of Dorothy, and amazed by her. I love that Dorothy is her own unique brand of normal. Weird and odd have a new meaning for me now. And I love that Elijah needs that brand of normal like oxygen. Even when he doesn't understand it. He doesn't want to handle her. He wants to be allowed to be in her vicinity. Allowed to love her. For it to be Okay to choose her. I loved the moments when he just took. He took control, desire, responsibility. He just took and he deserved it and I admired his character more for it. It was time! And I was feeling sad for him when he didn't. I felt despair and indignant on his behave. This story felt like if I was learning what was happening to maybe my neighbors. The type of story that you can really imagine being real. It felt sexy in an odd way. Made me laugh out loud. It made me think it was crazy. Made me roll my eyes. BUT I feel like it tough me a valuable life lesson. If I could have more starts to give it I would. 5 is not enough.

Quirky, funny and OH SO Angsty!. Dorothy Mayhem is such an awesome heroine, so quirky and honest and good. She is awkward and unsure but not afraid to put herself out there. “Mayhem synonyms: chaos, havoc, madness, trouble, disorder, pandemonium. Yep. All of those fit Dorothy.” Elijah Hawkins is a divorced dad still pining a bit for his previous life. Not quite sure if he is ready to move on. I felt like he came across as a bit of a ‘doormat’ at times, allowing family and friends to railroad him about. I can’t find fault with how true his love for Dorothy is and he sees past labels to the real Dorothy. The story is quirky and funny and oh so angsty. I loved the story and read it all in one day. -5 Stars!-

Perfectly Adequate. First time reading this author, will most definitely read her again. This was an unusual story, with wonderful characters that made me smile, laugh aloud, and get tears in my eyes. I loved it !

Loved it!!!. Dorothy...Dorothy...Dorothy! What a spectacular character! Jewel E Ann has written some of my favorite heroines ever and yet she tops it with Dorothy Mayhem! This quirky, selfless, analytical, beautiful soul. She is the embodiment of good! And Elijah her perfect match! God, did I love Eli! Not to mention, just how much the supporting characters add to the heart of this story and make it all the more pleasurable. I loved every single perfectly flawed and yet incredibly relatable human in this book. If only we could all see the humanity in life. If only we could all see through the thoughtful eyes of Dorothy Mayhem. What a universe that would be! Jewel E Ann pours her whole heart into Perfectly Adequate; she does with all her books but I could feel her soul in this one and I adored it! I hope she visits these fantastic characters in the future...I’m just not done with them yet...okay!

Must Read Quirky Rom Com. This book. THIS BOOK! I absolutely adored the characters and the story. I wanted to lap up every delicious word of Dorothy Mayhem, and by the way, mayhem is a perfect adjective for what Dorothy brings to Elijah Hawkins’ life. Whether I like a Jewel E. Ann character or not, they’re all wonderfully developed. Dumped by the love of his life, Elijah is lost and lovelorn until he bumps into co-worker Dorothy Mayhem. Dorothy is fresh, unrelentingly honest, and unassuming. Many find her quirky…and she is, but she is also adorable and lovable. “I’m okay being me. No one else can do it better.”—Dorothy The scene-stealer is Elijah’s son, Roman; if you look up the definition of Roman it will say “cutie pie”. Another fabulous secondary character is Elijah’s mother, Lori; she is loving and accepting, and she has the best advice. Playing the role of the antagonist is Julie, Elijah’s ex-wife. I didn’t like her. Even when given a reason to forgive her, I couldn’t. I suppose that means she is a well-written antagonist! This romantic comedy is an unexpected breath of fresh air. It is a bit quirky and messy, but real life is like that. “The spectrum is human. It’s not autism” There are plenty of chuckles, but there are more raw emotional moments that tugged at my heart. The characters’ issues are written with respect and grace. Sometimes those issues made me question how these lovable characters would make things work. Just like in real life, they muddled through and found their way. Everyone needs to read this lovely story!

Amazing reading!. Another fun, highly readable book by Jewel 🙌 💖 This book has me smiling with every turn of the page. Very different from other stories all there, this why I really love this book. 💙

Heartwarming story!. Elijah's wife up and leaves him taking his confidence with her. He finds love again in an unlikely place. Dorothy walks into his life like a tornado. She's quirky, socially awkward and just what he needs. I loved Dorothy in all her quirky glory. She is a breath of fresh air for Eli and his three year old son, Roman. Perfectly Adequate is a fun, sweet, heartwarming story, and I found myself with a huge smile on my face while I read.

Fantastic!!. “You can’t choose me.” “I won’t. I’ll wait for you to choose me.” There is nothing like a Jewel E. Ann book to get your heart racing and your emotions pumping. My heart feels like it just finished a marathon. Dorothy is such a breath of fresh air. Oh, how she made me laugh and smile. I love her and Eli’s dynamic. I loved watching their relationship evolve. "I don't mind being me. No one else can do it better." Jewel’s writing is spectacular. She articulates the characters in a manner that makes you feel as though you’re right there with them through everything. I could see the twitching of lips, the raising of eyebrows, the hands balled in frustration. I could feel all the emotions pouring out of both Dorothy and Eli, the anxieties, the questions, the love. Perfectly Adequate makes you laugh, it makes you cry, it makes you feel. It’s a beautiful, unique, and heartwarming story that just makes you feel good. “Thank you.” “For what?” “For letting me be me. Letting me be enough.”

Perfectly Adequate is Perfect. Perfectly Overwhelmed! Jewel E Ann continuously pulls at my heart strings again and again! I absolutely loved the story and I fell in love with both Dorothy and Eli. This story meant so much more to me than just words!. I felt every emotion, I could vividly visualize every thought I could hear just as they spoke as if seeing scenes in a movie. I really love this story in more ways than I can express! It hit close to home for me personally but yet it was uniquely in JEA fashion...simply beautiful, heartfelt, realistically empathic!

A MUST READ!!!. Tears! I had actual tears running down my face from laughing so hard! From page one I fell so hard for these characters. Eli, Dorothy and Roman stole my heart. I have no clue how Jewel does it but she makes each character so real and easily relatable. I was so into this novel, so in love with everything about these characters that I never wanted it to end. I laughed, hurt and loved with each of them . I swear every book, every word of Jewels is so different, inspirational, impactful, beautiful, out of the box, downright funny and always real. As always after finishing a JEA book I always see things in a different light. Always view the world and each persons lives differently. I feel I learn and grow with with each character. You experience it all and for that reason Jewel is one of my all time favorite authors! This book is an absolute MUST READ of 2019!!! It easily sailed to the one of the top spots of my all time favorite reads!!!

Wow. This book is really amazing.. Seriously. This is a beautiful book. What a beautiful portrayal of loving people for exactly who they are. Such a joyful rendering of a character with autism as wonderful, real, human and worthy of love and respect. Well done.

“𝙄 𝙙𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙗𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙢𝙚. 𝙉𝙤 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙚𝙡𝙨𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙙𝙤 𝙞𝙩 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧”. When my unicorn author Jewel said she was delivering a romcom I was over the moon. To me Jewel is a chameleon in the writing world. She can write from romantic suspense to comedy without batting an eye. All the stories are unique and you sure will love them all. There’s something about her characters that no matter what the story is about you can’t help to love them and identify with them. Perfectly Adequate was as hilarious as it was emotional. I haven’t laughed so hard to the point of tears in a very long time. I was crying from laughter and for the heartfelt moments. Basically I cried my eyes out aaall the way until the end. The story of Dorothy Mayhem and Dr. Elijah Hawkins was incredibly funny, inspirational, super sweet and just heartwarming. They say there’s a perfect someone for everyone in the world and I can say that there’s no other man more perfect than Eli for Dorothy and no other woman more perfect for Eli than Dorothy. They bring the best in each other. Complement and understand one another. “The girl with an old lady name, an uncensored tongue, and the most contagious grin has managed to flip my world on its side.” Dorothy Mayhem is a unique woman with ASD. She has a love for expressing her feelings in color coordinated journals, vibrant sneakers, pineapple pizza, emojis and 2 cute emus. She has a kind heart and no filters whatsoever. This last part was the reason I had stomachache from laughing so hard. She is the type of girl you would want to be best friends with. Her positivity, beautiful way of seen life and her quirky persona just made me want to squeeze her and be near her at all times. “Life is more vibrant through her eyes.” Dr. Elijah (Hottie) Hawkins is a very successful pediatric oncologist. Him and his cute little son Roman stole my heart. He’s divorce and life for Eli felt like it was crumbling down when his wife left but it was just a matter of finding that unique red sneaker wearer, obsessed with closing exercise rings and pineapple pizza eater to come stumbling into an elevator to make everything alright in his world. “Dorothy Mayhem possesses her own brand of seduction, and I’m completely entangled in every part of it.” It was incredibly fun watching everything unfold. I say watching because Jewel’s make you transport into this book and feel like you experiencing everything through Dorothy and Eli’s eyes. I also learned about Aspergers and hyper sensitive autistic people. I knew of their struggles but never comprehend how hard it is for them until I connected with Dorothy. That’s also another reason I love Jewel’s books. There’s always something new to learn and her characters feel like real humans. That incredible connection is a readers dream. If you want a super fun read with a real emotional plot, incredible lovable characters and a sure book hangover you definitely need to read Perfectly Adequate.

Perfectly adequate. Ive just finished this book and I’m not quite sure how to wrap up my feelings about it, so I’m going middle of the road. I’m pretty sure this is the first book I’ve read by this author and as far as I can tell this isn’t an ‘own voices’ story but possibly her child has ASD..? I love reading stories about different kinds of people and see the world from their view a little bit, so I was looking forward to reading this for that. I did find the MC, Dorothy, to be very chaotic and that made reading about her quite intense. My mind had me feeling all that mayhem (excuse the pun) along with her which made it hard for me to relax into the story and just enjoy it. I also found some parts of the story were a bit repetitive and made some parts of the story drag a bit… I did, however, enjoy the characters and their chemistry. They didn’t shy away from working on themselves and taking responsibility for their actions and trying to improve themselves, whether it was through formal therapy or just working through their thoughts with family. I guess it really was, perfectly adequate Dual POV, med spice, 18+

Perfectly perfect. Absolutely loved this book. I was hooked from the first chapter. Couldn’t put it down, I read it from start to finish in one sitting. Absolutely worth the read!
